Packers' Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Ready to Embrace Leadership Role
-- It's hard to temper sky-high expectations for a seemingly re-energized defense spearheaded by new coordinator, Mike Pettine.
Fortunately, there's still several months to go before the Green Bay Packers take the field for their first regular season came to put a full offseason of preparation to the test -- and they're going to need every bit of it to adjust to and learn Pettine's schematic mastery.
The Packers are expecting big things from their defense under Pettine, but leading the charge has to be safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who has been an inconsistent body on the back-end of the Packers' secondary for 20-or-so. His sudden whirlwind in performance spanned from late in 2016 when he earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors.
Clinton-Dix, the 21st overall pick in the 2014 draft, is entering 2018 on the final year of his rookie deal. The Packers picked up his fifth-year option last offseason, making him the first player the team has ever invested a fifth-year option in since the collective bargaining agreement was put in place in 2011.
If he's able to rebound in 2018, he won't have to worry about searching for a new team in free agency and adjusting to another new defensive coordinator. The Packers would likely keep him around for the long-haul, especially after losing safety Morgan Burnett to the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency.
"I'm excited to step up and take on his role," Clinton-Dix said during Tuesday's open availability after reporting for the start of the spring program. "He was a leader on this defense, he was a guy that was always held accountable. He was a guy who you never had to question whether he was going to work hard or not. He set great standards for, not only me but everyone else in this locker room.
"We just have to carry over the tradition that he set."
Burnett has been playing in Green Bay since 2010 and Clinton-Dix since 2014, yet, the two served as primary staples that locked down the Packers' safety position for four years. Now, Clinton-Dix serves with his understudy in Josh Jones -- last year's 61st overall pick and essentially a replica of Burnett in terms of his ability to play various positions.
This marks something coach Mike McCarthy addressed earlier this offseason, and that's a new, enhanced leadership role for Clinton-Dix. While it shouldn't be hard to excel with Pettine leading the way, the Packers' new defensive coordinator can only do so much to put players in position to succeed -- they still need to make the plays.
"Everybody's being held accountable. There's not going to be any loose strings. Whether you're a 10-year veteran or a rookie, guys are going to be held accountable and I'm excited about that."
Clinton-Dix called out players in the Packers' locker room back in January who, according to the safety, were more worried about what was going on in the team's personnel department and with the coaching staff than what their own jobs were.
That stemmed from whether or not former defensive coordinator Dom Capers should've been fired after the Packers finished 7-9 last season and finished with porous defensive rankings across the chart for another campaign in a redundant fashion.
Now, the hope is -- amongst many of the defensive players -- that Pettine won't hesitate from dragging players by the ear and letting them know that their performance or attitude isn't suitable. It's an attitude that the Packers have evidently been missing on defense since their 2010 Super Bowl season.
Burnett was also a member of that 2010 roster, despite being on injured reserve. The teachings throughout an eight-year career in Green Bay translated to Clinton-Dix, whose counterpart will likely be Kentrell Brice at strong safety unless the Packers draft one capable of starting within four months.
"Everything I learned from [Burnett], I think I'm ready to step in his place and be that guy that everybody can come to when it's time to get into the playbook, or it's time to hang out and get the group together and study. I'm excited about this role that I'm taking on, but No. 42, he's a guy I definitely miss. ... I'm kinda getting chills thinking about him right now because I learned so much from that guy."
Whether his production as of late has matched the role he's expanding into, coach Mike McCarthy knows what to expect from Clinton-Dix and still feels he's fully capable of remaining a significant component in Pettine's new defense.
"The thing I'll say about Ha Ha, he needs to just continue to grow as a leader, dive into this new defensive system," McCarthy said, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN. "I think he's definitely one of our top guys in the locker room. Great respect for him and the way he goes about it.
"But hey, it wasn't my best year either last year. We all own that. To sit there and start putting that onto individuals, that's not realistic."

This would suggest that the NFC North faces the NFC WEST and the AFC EAST in 2018.
That would mean Packers will also face BILLS, PATS, CARDS.
That would also mean that the Packers' two opponents based on record would be the Falcons and one other NFC team..Falcons being one of the match ups based on record I find odd (pairing a 7-9 Packers w/ no playoff birth to the 10-6 Falcons who won a wildcard game).
that seems a little red-flaggy to me, but who knows.

Glad I could help. So, the leaked schedule was bogus after all. The opponents were right and what were home and away games were right. Dates were made up. The real schedule is out. Not to bad, but there's a 5 game stretch with 4 of the games on the road against good teams . It's a gauntlet we'll have to overcome

Leadership role? I hope our rookie D players don't watch his tape from last year. An underachieving quitter who avoids contact is not a leader. HHCD needs to clean his own house before he becomes a leader. He was a contributor to our D problems last year's.
I can't see how the D Vets would take HHCD serious as a leader. A leader is someone who influences others into battle. Player leaders lead by example - Reggie White, Favre, Woodson, Starr, Nitschke, ect are examples of player leaders.
I''m looking forward to see what our new DC does with Dix. He needs to light a fire under his ass. Actually, it sounds like our new DC has already planted the seeds in what he expects out of Dix. He told him he wants him playing like a leader, the opposite of what he played like last year.

This is pretty easy to figure out.
Packers exercise 5th year option on HHCD, effectively moving his contract year out one season from 2017 to 2018.
His level of play in 2017, former contract year, falls off a cliff.
Look for HHCD to light the world on fire in 2018.

2016 really was a former contract year, too: he was playing for the 5th year option. Remember the Packers can rescind the 5th year option until it kicks in (and I can't remember what that date was...start of the league year?). So they could've pulled the option based on his crappy 2017. He and his agent had to be aware of that...

I don't remember anyone writing that Hayward mailed it in during his last season in GB. He was just not very good on the boundary. And he was in a contract year. Not seeing the comparison at all.

A lot of Clinton-Dix haters I see...let's not forget he was a major contributor in 2016. He also had consistently improved from his rookie year. Point being, he has the ability. I'm not a Bama fan, but I tend to give Bama defensive products the benefit of the doubt, particularly those that are well spoken and not getting themselves in trouble off the field or causing trouble with other players and teammates. Hes a true competitor, and a winner, and hes purposefully dressed himself as a true professional.
Lastly, let's read between the lines here. the theme for the defense this offseason IMO has been accountability. From the things I've heard from him and Blake Martinez specifically these guys aren't just buying in. They are telling their teammates "Follow me, I'm gonna get it done. When I f#@! up that s%&$ is on me." That kind of accountability was unheard of under Capers.

HHCD had a lousy season but I expect Pettine will find ways to make him shine like he did on 2016, his all pro year.
Mike Daniels has called him out in 2016 as being one of the leaders on the D with a "nasty attitude" the team needed.
He needs to get that swagger and production back and I think Pettine can resurrect it. If not, HHCD will be watching from the sidelines.

Why judge HHCD based off of one or two literally meaningless games at the end of last season that was filled with doubt and justified frustration? While also playing second and third stringers competing for future roster spots?! I just don't see the logic, if someone wants to bring that to my attention I'm listening...

Truth is, after the past 2 seasons, none of us know what we're getting from Ha Ha this year.
One thing's for certain: Ha Ha wasn't ready for last year's expanded role, leaving him thinking far too much rather than exploding on the ball or into tackles.
Will he be better this year? Of course, but how much? How much can we blame last year on Burnett's injury and Capers's horrible decisions?
I honestly don't know.

I really hope Pettine can improve over Dom. This is still speculation although you have to live the experience to verify an improvement. My theory is that improvement is coming especially since the Packer's defense posted some of the most horrible stats during the Dom area. Being next to last in some areas can't get worse. Pettine will do better since you can't get worse than what dom was providing. It was McCarthy's responsibility to get rid of Dom but he kept him on despite the mediocrity.

He is also a criminal justice major graduating from Alabama this summer and interning at the Brown County Courthouse. So while you can critique his work last year and the game tape, at least get your facts straight about the man off the field.

This whole team knew instantly they were done when AR got hurt. He wasn't the only one who mailed it in last year. There were a lot of players sitting out that would have played if it meant something. Also they were just spinning there wheels not having faith in Capers defense IMO. The shake up has happened, no more excuses. These players have to make this new system work or get the hell out.

Not surprised with the Ha Ha dislikes on this page. I too saw the missed tackles, pull backs and general bad play by this secondary and Clinton Dix in particular. The fact that the Packers took another year to see "the real Clinton Dix" says a lot.
You have to go back to Nick Collins to see a difference maker at safety. Seems to be another one of those positions that the Packers can't seem to fill properly. Here's hoping that Gutekunst and the new scouting hierarchy can find more defensive talent than their predecessors did.

I'd sign Ed Reid and trade Haha and a pick to move back into the first. But that's just me. Watching some of the other killer safeties around the league I've never been impressed by HaHa even in 2016. No one speaks of him in the same breath as Harrison or even Reid. Trade him while he's still got trade value.

Ed Reed retired a few years ago and will be getting into the Hall of Fame in a couple seasons. As far as Eric Reid goes, he's a fine player but never has been a splash player like we've seen HHCD be in the past (ex. 2014 NFC Title game, 2016 season).

Regarding your comments on Ha-Ha - I remember the similar comments in the past years where you mostly complained about Casey Hayward and / or Micah Hyde. How slow they are, how often get injured (especially Casey), as they are often out of position, how naive, how bad they are, and so on ... You have been indifferent when they were released to leave Green Bay.
The complaits began when they started playing well and when all of you proved that they were the top choice of TT and the personnel department at the draft ...
We are lucky that you do not run Packers ...

Whether HA HA becomes a leader or not the bottom line is that he must play better than he did last season. Even before Rodgers went down with his injury I didn't think that HA HA was playing at his 2016 level which was good but I was surprised when he made All-Pro.
IMO the entire team tried to play without getting seriously hurt once they realized that Brett Hundley was not Mark Brunell or Zeke Bratkowski. But Dix was not himself even before the Huntley debacle(s).
In any case 2017 is behind the entire team now and I'm just looking forward and expecting the Packers to get back to playing quality football. My biggest hope is that once the final 53 is set we can get through the season without the annual barrage of injuries we seem to suffer every season. Then we can have a better idea for how well Gute and the coaches are doing with the team. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

A year without a major cluster of injuries at positions. Yes, that would be nice... At the risk of repeating myself, the entire team failed. From Mark Murphy to Mike McCarthy to the coaches and the players on the field they all stepped in it. Even before the injury wave hit, there were flashing bright signs that something was wrong at 1265. And like everything else, it got reflected on the field of play. Dix should play better this year, with a understanding of his role, and a coaching staff who has his back. I said this before, but to watch a team like the Packers, who have had success for close to a decade fail was shocking. Dix and McCarthy may have one thing in common, they are both playing for their jobs this year.

They key to the teams defensive performance in 2018 is holding every player accountable, that starts with McCarthy and Petine respectively. Yes it is great to have "team leaders" but what you never hear mentioned is teams that have them have losing seasons too. What needs to be accountable is performance, 8 straight trips to the Playoffs let complacency set in and an unusual rash of defensive injuries didn't allow the team to demote starters who were not performing, next man up was just that, before they ran out of options. Speaking of accountability and leadership, I have been watching the team since the Lombardi era and I would have never bet that a Packer player would ever be ordered off the field early in a game and told to leave the stadium by the head coach. No wonder heads rolled at seasons end.

I got the distinct impression that Ha Ha was holding back last year so he wouldn't get injured and potentially ruin a big payday during his contract year when he can really cash in should he play like an all pro. Hope he plays like a man possessed and proves us all wrong.

I know this happens, but I have a major problem with it. Slough off for a year and not do your job so that you stay healthy, but then play really hard the next year and make it look like you're worth a great big contract. Then once you get it, you slough off again so you don't get hurt.
If this is the case, I hope HHCD plays like a man possessed this year so that the Packers can trade him.

I don't blame Dix for last year. First, they put him out on an island on 1-high, with a player who did not know the scheme (Brice). Trying to cover the entire back half is impossible for any DB, no matter how gifted. Second. McCarthy failed the team last year. The collapse of both the offense and defense rests with him. He lost his coaching staff and set his players adrift. No excuse. He is lucky he is back this year. But after the cluster in the front office, he got a pass. Players like Dix got lost, or did not understand their roles on last year team. The coaching room must have been a mess last year. Dix is a far better player than last year, with the new DB coach and DC, he gets a chance to show it.

Whether it's on Capers or on Dix, the bottom line to me is that I just don't think he's as good as we hoped he was. He hasn't been as rangy as I'd hoped, and I don't think he processes quickly enough in-game (which probably limits his ability to cover ground). I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt with regard to his physicality being diminished due to being indecisive, and he wasn't touted as being a physical safety coming out. I think he guesses more than he should. Certainly his nfl.com profile reads that way...

...and I haven't seen much to convince me otherwise. They need to keep it simple for him, I think, for him to be at his best. Getting HHCD to play at or above his 2016 level (when he still wasn't terribly physical) will be an important part of making this defense better in 2018.

I struggle to understand how he could have taken that huge step back between 2016 & 2017. There had to be injury involved, or some other issue going on with teammates or coaches.
I still hold out hope he'll return to the ascending status he showed in 2016.

he didn't take any leadership last year so why would he do it this year? James will lead if we can get him.

With so mant players commenting about lack of leadership or lack of accountability, just where was MM? What did he do last year and why does he get a free pass?
BH according to MM was not properly prepared to play. That was one coaches fault. The offense was unimaginative and predictable. That was another coaches fault.
The defense was god awful with too many players lost or just not caring enough to justify being on the field. That was another coaches fault.
As the head coach MM was responsible for everything but he comes out clean. Doesnt make any sense
