The Green Bay Packers are the only franchise in the history of the NFL to win three straight championships and they’ve done it twice. Yet, this season, the Kansas City Chiefs have a chance to become the first team since the Lombardi Era to match that feat.

The first time the Packers pulled off a three-peat was from 1929-1931. They were the first three NFL championships won by the Packers who were still coached by the legendary Curly Lambeau.

In those days, the championship was determined by the team having the best regular season record. There were no playoffs and no championship game. The 1929 Packers finished the season 12-0-1 and edged out the New York Giants for the title. The Giants finished 13-1-1. The Packers outscored their opponents by a remarkable 198-22 margin. They didn’t allow more than six points a game in any of their 13 contests while recording eight shutouts. Star players included Johnny “Blood” McNally, Verne Lewellen, and Lavvie Dilweg.

After finishing 10-3-1 in 1930, again outlasting the Giants who finished second. The Packers went for a third straight title in 1931. That year, a 12-2 season helped the Pack capture another championship. The only team that gave them much competition was the Portsmouth Spartans who finished 11-3.

In 1932, the Packers championship run ended. The Pack contended and finished second in the NFL at 10-3-1. The Bears beat them out by having a 7-1-6 record. Back then, ties didn’t count in the standings so the Packers winning percentage was .769 while the Bears were .875.

No team won three straight again until Vince Lombardi’s Packers won from 1965 through 1967. That included wins in the first two Super Bowls.

Each year, the Packers found a way to win a championship in a closely contested game. In 1965, the Packers tied for the Western Conference title with the Baltimore Colts. The Pack beat the Colts 13-10 in overtime. A controversial field goal by Don Chandler tied the game before the Packers won in OT. Both Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr were injured so Zeke Bratkowski led the Packers to victory. Running back Tom Matte, who played quarterback in college, subbed in as the Colts signal caller.

The Packers then beat the Cleveland Browns 23-12 in the NFL Championship Game as Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung helped the Pack run over the Browns in Jim Brown’s final NFL game.

In 1966, the Packers were a dominant team, finishing 12-2 and losing their two games by a combined four points. The Packers roster featured 11 future Hall of Famers plus Lombardi as their coach.

They beat the Dallas Cowboys 34-27 in the NFL Championship Game. The Packers clinched the win on the game’s final play when Tom Brown intercepted Don Meredith in the end zone. Dallas was one play away from tying the game and sending it into overtime, but the Packers came through in the clutch behind an outstanding performance by Bart Starr.

In 1967, the Packers went for their third straight title. They struggled through injuries to key players and an aging roster to finish 9-4-1.

They met the Cowboys again in the NFL Championship Game, better known as “The Ice Bowl.” The game day temperature was 13 degrees below zero. To date, it remains the franchise’s signature win.

The Packers took an early 14-0 lead only to see Dallas come back and lead 17-14. The Packers started a dramatic game-winning drive across the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field that culminated in Starr’s quarterback sneak in the closing seconds. The Packers won 21-17 and captured their third straight NFL title.

Two weeks later, the Packers crushed the Oakland Raiders 33-14 in Super Bowl II to capture their third straight world championship. Lombardi retired as the Packers head coach shortly after the game.

Since then, no team has been able to win three straight NFL championships. There have been seven teams who won two straight Super Bowls after the Packers three-peat, but none of them managed to win three in a row.

This year, the Kansas City Chiefs led by Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid will try to join the Packers as the only franchise in NFL history to win three straight titles. The Packers are hoping to keep their exclusive hold on this milestone. We’ll see if this landmark record is tied or remains the exclusive property of the Packers.
