Packers' Long-Snapper Carousel Traces Back to Brett Goode Where It Started

For years, the long-snapping position in Green Bay has been battened down with a consistent starter. For the last year or so, it's been everything but consistent.

According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, the Packers will be bringing back Brett Goode on Tuesday to handle long-snapping duties moving forward.

The Packers placed Goode on injured reserve after the week 3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in which Goode suffered a hamstring injury on the game-winning field goal operations in overtime. They released him off of the reserve a day later with an injury settlement, keeping him sidelined for six weeks.

By terms of his settlement and given whether or not he's recovered enough to pass his physical with the team, the Packers were eligible to re-sign Goode after week 10. Pending said physical, he'll be snapping on Sunday against the Balgmore Ravens.

The Packers have had their fair share of woes at almost every position this season, but few have been documented the fact that they've gone through three long snappers since September.

Goode beat out Taybor Pepper for the starting job by the end of August, however, three weeks into the season, Goode was replaced by his former training camp opponent. Pepper was able to handle the gig with little difficulty for the duration of about a month before breaking his foot in a practice, leading to his untimely arrival on injured reserve in early November.

Enter Derek Hart, who has handled the long-snapping job for the last two games and is now in danger of being replaced by Goode, pending his routine medical check.

It may not be Hart's slightly off-line snap against the Chicago Bears on Sunday that caused holder Justin Vogel to mishandle the ball and Mason Crosby to miss a 35-yard field goal that led to Goode's re-arrival, but the convenient timing of Hart's mishap and Goode's eligibility to return may have caused the Packers to go back to their trusted veteran.

Goode has been the primary long-snapper for the Packers since 2008 and has virtually played in every game, save the final two games of the 2015 season after he tore his ACL. He landed back with the Packers prior to their 2016 season opener and has been involved with the team ever since.

There haven't been any reports surfacing -- at the moment -- that the Packers are releasing Hart. Goode is expected to take the roster spot left behind by former tight end Martellus Bennett, however, if all goes well with his medical check, Goode will knock Hart out of the mix and open up one more roster spot.

The Packers are also expected to make the swap between moving Bryan Bulaga to injured reserve and Jason Spriggs to the active roster in his place sometime this week.

With all the long snappers that come out of college football each year, you can't even find one?

The fact that you never hear Goode's name when he is playing tells us how good he really is compared with these other Long Snappers. Thanks, Since '61

Yes there is a report that they signed Goode and released Hart, so how does a hammy prevent the snapping of a football ?

He still needs to hold the point long enough for the kick to get away. If he can't brace and push on his leg, he's toast.

Reminds me of the Flynn debacle. Cut the respected and established player, suffer the consequences, and then lure back the aforementioned cut player.

Only difference was Goode was cut due to injury.

Yep. There was no good reason to put him on IR. They get him back just as fast this way and didn't need to use a recall spot.
