Packers losing outside linebackers coach Mike Smith

The Packers have another spot on LaFleur's staff to fill.

QB coach? Sorted

But now? They need an outside linebackers coach.

UPDATE: The Packers have announced that Jason Rebrovich will take over as outside linebackers coach.

Rebrovich has 20 years of coaching experience, including eight seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills (2013-16) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-20). He most recently served as Jacksonville’s defensive line coach in 2019-20.

From Rob:

Smith has always been close with Mike Pettine, so the guess here is that his contract was up and he had no interest in re-upping in Green Bay. I'd suspect he'll join Pettine in Minnesota, who are currently without a linebackers coach for new head coach Kevin O'Connel's staff.

Whether getting career years out of Za'Darius and Preston Smith or developing former first round pick Rashan Gary, Smith did some strong work in Green Bay.

I'll always appreciate the time Smith made for folks on the beat. I had about a 15 minute conversation the day after his chat below on the importance of looking at pressures instead of sacks when it comes to pass rushers. The guy is one of a kind and a good football coach.

First, good for Smith to be able to springboard to another opportunity. He did a fine job as the OLB coach - especially Gary.

Secondly, I'm wanting to see the next LB coach hired in the true spirit of the ethnic-minority program. I've noticed that MLFs coaching staff is becoming a little too monochromatic.

wait a minute, are you saying that recycling failed white coaches isn't a viable strategy?

maybe he can find the son of a longtime NFL head coach or assistant to take on the outside linebackers. i don't understand why these minority candidates didn't choose to be born to a member of the NFL coaching fraternity.

Well, I’m not sure LB coach is the most obvious opportunity to promote Ruvell Martin. Might make sense to look at people who have worked with Barry, if any are available.

Martin was hired through the Minority Coaching Fellowship - as an attempt by the league to bolster minority hiring for high-level jobs against the backdrop of a lagging record of diversity by its teams. I'm glad that Martin was hired but the initiative came from the league - not the Packers.

The Packers have 9 minority coaches out of 22 total. That is 41%

"Between February 4, 2019 and February 2, 2020, NFL teams filled a total of 31 open positions for head coaches, offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators, and general managers. White men were hired for 24 of the 31 available positions, 77.4%, while only seven different men of color were hired for the remainder of open positions, 22.58%. "

n.b., approximately 68% of NFL players are black.

Hispanic coaches are more underrepresented in the NFL than black coaches, even though they make up a greater percentage of the United States population.

I did have difficulty finding information on the Hispanic coaches - whereas they are definitely part of the NFL's ethnic minority.

Huh? Jerry Gray, Ben Sirmans, Jerry Montgomery, Ryan Mahaffey, Ruvell Martin, Wendel Davis, Justin Hood, Rayna Stewart, and Thadeus Jackson.

None are OCs, DCs, Associate HCs or Assistant HCs . In short, not the upper tier coaching positions - which is reflective of the NFL coaching hierarchy. So when was the last time the Packers had a minority HC, OC or DC?

You already named him, WInston Moss (Asst. HC). Although that title was more about shielding him from being pirated by another team.

Before Moss, Ray Rhodes?

Right - Moss left Packers in 2018 and Rhodes in 1993. I can't recall any others in the nearly 30 yrs. since Rhodes left. Interestingly, Moss never got another NFL job after he left the Packers.

It’s the Biden rule hire by color not by experience and job performance.

Probably right, but there was a fair amount of anti-Trump sentiment. Doesn't make it right though. I too, prefer nonpolitical.

...and more and more racist.

He's been spewing this "minority quota" nonsense for months. Apparently, according to him, black coaches are never hired on merit, just some imaginary quota system. He really is an idiot....and that's being kind.

Not a Tampa Two defense. You should know that they only have Clark to fill out a four front. Might as well bring in Matthews.

Jason Rebrovich will return to coaching after a one year hiatus and take over for Mike Smith.

Rebrovich last coached with Jacksonville and prior to that with Buffalo.

I never saw an organization lose so many coaches at one time...Ever. Hopefully we replace them with better folks. I'm confident with ST coach so far, which is huge. I'm pretty sure he will have Gutes ear as far as ST needs after this years playoff fail. Well, no matter how much everyone else knew it...there was no avoiding this complete lack of Coaching...lack of correct personnel...lack of HC knowledge of and desire of allowing starter personnel on ST and sufficient playing time for it..220 lb. long snapper LOL. Yea, we seen what happens there. I think the average weight is more like 238. I'm thinking 250-260 should be a starting point. GPG
