Packers Monday Mock Roundup 3.0 (Final Edition)

The NFL Draft is soon upon us.  For the next two weeks you're going to see a lot of mock drafts, and I mean, like, a lot of mock drafts.  For the next three Mondays here at Cheesehead TV I"m going to provide you with the Packers' selections in ten of the top mock drafts on the net.  If the mocks provide a second round pick, we'll take a look at that too.  I've also included my own 7 round mock via FanSpeak.

Andrew Billings

Todd McShay

Pro Football Focus

Billings remains a popular option for Green Bay.  I've mentioned before that I have an issue taking a nose tackle early in the draft, considering the Packers only play a nose tackle on 14 or 15 plays per game.  The fact that Billings really does have a chance to develop pass rush is what saves the pick for me.

Vernon Butler

Jacob Westendorf

Cody Bauer

Butler has the versatility that maybe Billings does not.  Butler has tremendous length and is very disruptive.  The Louisiana Tech product has the ability to play nose, 3 and 5 technique in Capers defense.

Noah Spence

Ross Uglem- I did it.  I took him.  Look below.  See.

Sheldon Rankins

Will Brinson

Rankins at 27 would be highway robbery.  He's a very, very good player and will fit in any defensive scheme.  Should go in the top 12 as far as I'm concerned.

Jarran Reed

Matt Miller

DraftTek

If Reed is the selection, I'll understand it, I just won't like it.  I don't like addressing any phase of the run game in round 1. It's a passing league.  With that said, Reed is the finest run defender in this draft, and would theoretically take care of the nose tackle position on 1st and 2nd down for the rest of the Aaron Rodgers era.

Chris Jones

Chad Reuter

Jones has the length and versatility to fit in Capers' scheme, but is a player that I would prefer in round 2, whether that means Green Bay has traded back or not.

Reggie Ragland

Mel Kiper

Ragland is the classic 3-4 inside linebacker.  Not necessarily the pure cover linebacker that Packers fans crave, but a very good player.  Ragland could solidify the inside linebacker position, with Ryan, for the foreseeable future.  Players like Micah Hyde and Joe Thomas can fill in during pass coverage situations.

Jonathan Bullard

Walter Football

Bullard is an odd pick.  I'm not sure where exactly he fits in a 3-4, but he is certanily a talented player.  I'd be "puzzled".  Puzzled in a very similar way that I was puzzled when Thompson took Randall in round 1 a season ago.

2nd round options:

Jihad Ward- Walter Football

Su'A Cravens- Ross Uglem

Jaylon Smith- Chad Reuter

Shillique Calhoun- Jacob Westendorf

Robert Nkemdiche- Mel Kiper

Ross Uglem Mock- done on FanSpeak using Matt Miller (Bleacher Report)'s Big Board

1. Noah Spence, EDGE - EKU, Spence was a former dominant player at the Ohio State University.  Had he stayed at Ohio State and stayed out of trouble, he'd be in the conversation as a top 10 pick, driving a narrative about he and Bosa being top 10 picks from the same line.  Spence will kick out to OLB in the Packers scheme, and will be a tremendous value at 27 if he is able to stay clean and motivated.  A top 10 talent.

2.  Su'A Cravens, S/OLB- USC, Cravens was a safety in college, but would slide in next to Jake Ryan as the WILB in Dom Caper's 3-4 defense.  The Packers woudl use Cravens in a very similar way that the Cardinals (successfully) use Deone Buchanan.  Right away the Packers might use Barrington next to Ryan on early downs and send Cravens in for sub packages, but he' would be part of the solution at ILB.

3.  Kenny Clark, DL - UCLA- I continued with Thompson's love of the Pac-12 and addressed the defensive line, using the depth of this class to acquire a starting quality player at 88th overall.  At 6'3" 314, Clark has the length to hold up at a lot of different positions across Caper's 2 and 3 man DL schemes.  Clark should be able to help the Packers right away, at least through Pennel's suspension.

4a. CJ Prosise, RB- Notre Dame- Prosise is a WR convert who catches the ball out of the backfield very well.  I also think he's a legitimate potential replacement for Eddie Lacy, especially if he's used in a committee with John Crockett in 2017.  Prosise gives the Packers leverage in the Lacy negotiations and opens up the 2016 offense.

4b. Adolphus Washington, DL - tOSU- Washington is another defensive line value at the end of the fourth round, because of the depth of the defensive line class.  Washington played in a 4-3 defense at Ohio State, but so did a lot of players that Thompson has selected to play defensive line over the years.

4c. Kyle Murhpy, OT - Stanford- Murphy would be a capable right tackle immediate, and has the girth to play guard as well.  Murphy, like a lot of Thompson draftees played left tackle in college.  That Stanford offensive line opened up a lot of holes for Stepfan Taylor and Christian McCaffery during his time there.

5. Vadal Alexander, G, LSU- Alexander is a guard-only prospect, not something often taken by Thompson.  He is, however, with one year of seasoning a capable starting guard in the NFL.  His selection would immediately provide depth and give the Packers leverage in the forthcoming Josh Sitton and TJ Lang negotiations.

6.  Jerell Adams, TE, South Carolina- Adams is a long-term replacement for Jared Cook.  They even went to the same school.  I'd like to give new TE Coach Bryan Angelicho a chance to work with Adams and teach him the position for a year and unleash him in 2017.

7. Tom Hackett, P, Utah- The best punter in the draft, in my opinon.  Tim Masthay's time in Green Bay should be up.

I'd love this draft, but have a feeling half those guys aren't available when our picks come around. I don't see Cravens lasting to the end of round 2, and would be ecstatic if Clark was still there way at the end of round 3. And then Ted would pass on him and draft someone out of left field.

The best mock to date. I'd replace Clark with Reader, Prosise with Drake, and Washington with Kaufusi.

Step out of round 1 for all the marbles...!

Why would anyone be talking about replacing Eddie Lacy?! Seriously? That's beyond premature and I would bet that he's in GB for years to come. SMH

Come on, man. This is CHTV. Here, we don't allow players to have 1 bad season.

Lacy must go
Davante Adams must go
Bahk must go

I don't think Prosise would be a replacement though. He'd be a damn good compliment though. Funny, he has the same issue as Starks though (ball security).

Jerrel Adams and Josh Perry ftw. That way we have a Adams that can catch and a Perry that can play a complete season without getting hurt hahaha.

Round one: a player we may or may not be familiar with, at a position we may or may not agree with. Said player, in time, may or may not pan out.

Rounds 2-7: see round one and repeat.

Giddy up! The draft is almost here!

I'd really like this draft, even though I'd hate the Cravens pick. I don't wish any Packer a bad season, but y'all will see that we are currently not built to have a smaller/athletic ILB be successful.

The Spence, Clark, Prosise, Adolphus (at least we have multiple picks in the 4th), and Adams (will be surprised if he fell that far) picks should bring pretty good depth.

It would be nice if the Packers can have the players that Ross Uglem picks. But I'm afraid most, if not all, players will be gone before the Packers' turns. In other words, this mock is not realistic.

Ross's Mock Draft is Damn good but I don't see Adams dropping to the 6th and I don't see Hackett available in the 7th. The Texas A&M punter might be available in the 7th in which case Thompson shouldn't hesitate, not even for a second.

I would LOVE Cravens in the second round....Love that kid!

Damn it, I can't help but to think TT/MM/Capers would pull the trigger on a top pass rusher - no matter what other type of player "falls" to #27.

Wouldn't it be nice to not HAVE to rush 5 or 6 people to get pressure? Remember that Chargers game against a line of backups?

Got cha.

So, how about that game against the Panthers and Broncos?

Peyton - 21/29 - 340 yards - sacked once

Newton - 15/30 - 297 yards - 3 TDs - never sacked. I think he missed 2 wide open WRs that game too -- but nevermind that.

Could have used a rusher against the Cards maybe? No more heavy zone against pass heavy teams? I don't know.

I am also much in favor of dominating defense, no doubt. But you can't make chicken salad if you don't have any chickens available to you (regardless of where you're picking, be it 27 or 127 or 199.)

Whenever I get too locked in on thinking about a position of need, I remind myself of the (basketball, I know) example of the team who "needed" a big man and took Sam Bowie while passing over Michael Jordan.

To me, that is the essence of BPA and why we have to just sit back and be patient. At the time, I HATED the Jordy Nelson pick. Since then, I've gotten smart enough to know how dumb I am.

Giddy up, draft!

Lol, you lost me there @TK.

Are you saying if the highest rated pass rusher is available at #27, but player x (let's say he is ranked 20th OVERALL) is available you'd choose player x?

The problem is that there won't be a "top" edge player at #27, mostly projects and guys with significant issues. I agree with you, though: edge players are at a premium and if you don't have them, you better be good and deep at CB.

We don't know that @Dobber

Kevin Dodd
Shaq Lawson
Kamalei Correa
Noah Spence - arguably the BEST rusher in the draft

Are all good bets. Especially with the QBs, WRs and hopefully DTs going. Most teams mocked taking a pass rusher also need a QB and/or OT help,

You're 100% right, but there are pretty good bets with regard to who will be gone: Lawson and Spence are fairly sure to be off the board (if you listen to the pundits). Dodd could be gone and I think #27 is high for Correa and Ogbah, and I wouldn't touch Nkemdiche until his value is too good to pass up. Depending on who you listen to, that means you're probably looking at Correa and Ogbah, and maybe Dodd at #27 as the top edge rushers.

I'd jump on Lawson or Spence in a heartbeat if they're there.

I stop paying attention to the "experts" after pick 15 or so. Off the top, I remember HHCD being the top rated Safety, Ryan Shazier was mocked all over the 1st round, and the Lions were certain to go Defense the year Ebron was drafted. Things happen...

I wouldn't touch Correa or Ogbah in the first either by the way.

Edit: Oh yea,how could I forget to mention Carl Bradford. Didn't he have a high grade?

I remember reading a few years ago that ted avoids edge rushers, they cost too much. Eat up to much salary.he prefers putting people in that role who can fill multi roles aka mathews. A linebacker anfd pass rusher in one body.

Other than Bullard and Chris Jones, I am fine with any of those first round picks. I'd hate Cravens, Smith or Ward in the 2nd, but would be fine with Nkemdiche (or Chris Jones, who I knock down a round based on attitude) and just okay with Calhoun. Love the Fanspeak mock, but it seems absurd to me that most of those later picks would be there.

Just curious TGR, why not Cravens? He's basically the same size as Lee but didn't score as well in Vertical and Broad Jump and Craven did as well or better in the 3 cone and Shuttle at his Pro Day as Lee did at the combine.

I'm terrfied TT will draft ANYBODY like Jones, Ward, or Nkemdiche who's motor is questioned. Some teams seem to do well with players like that and motivate them, the Packers aren't one of them.

I am still considering whether I am too much of an old fogey regarding these 225 Lb chase linebacker types. Cravens showed speed and COD in his tape, but only ran a 4.69 forty at his pro day, which I mentally translate to about a 4.75 at the combine. Heck, Ragland ran faster, but skipped the 3 cone at the combine, and ran a 7.5 3 cone at his pro day (see link since this is downright alarming but - this is bleacher report and I read 4 other articles on his pro day, not one of which mentioned him running a 3 cone).

I thought Cravens' tape against ND was not good. Don't feel he qualifies as a chase LB. Should not be on the field on first downs. Actually did not feel his coverage was all that great. I like Deion Jones about as well as Cravens overall and I like Jones better if I want to use a decent pick on a sub package only type guy.

Most of the scouts seem to cite Cravens instincts and feistiness (my word) as his key attributes. You're right: his metrics are not all that impressive, really, for a player of his size and in his role.

I've been in favor of the Deone Bucanon model, but I tend to agree with Dre- : if the Packers are going to go the 3-down, chase S-ILB route to try to shore up the middle of the defense, they better draft two plow-boys to shore up the DL, because my guess is that player will get abused.

I should have mentioned Cravens' instincts - I am big on that. Also agree that Cravens would need to be left immaculate to be effective on run downs.

I previously advocated drafting S Justin Simmons in the 3rd. He can challenge Hyde, back up Burnett and possibly replace him, and perhaps back up Ha Ha. But Simmons is only 202 lbs, not Cravens 226 lbs.

Interesting thanks...

Now there I'm completely with you, I really like Jones. Most mocks have him going in the 3rd but with his speed I'm afraid he won't make it to the Packers in the 3rd. My perfect draft for the Packers would be DL, OLB, and Jones for the first 3 rounds. If OLB is his first pick and DL the second I'm happy with that too. That would be 3 new starters in the front 7 with all the Sub Packages the Packers play which is needed.

A CB or TE, and 2 O-Linemen in the 4th and whichever you didn't draft in the 5th.

Wow, a lot of mocks have reggie ragland falling to the packers. Very interesting. I didnt think he would be around but a lot of tema in front of the pack dont need linebackers. My gutt still says nt. Then edge the linebacker. They have a lot of needs so it doesnt matter when.
