Packers Offensive Line Versatility Vital for 2025 Success

Jordan Morgan (No. 77) and Sean Rhyan (No. 75) have both shown ability to play multiple interior line positions so far in training camp.

Through the first week of the Green Bay Packers’ 2025 training camp, one of the areas of the Green Bay Packers that has gotten a lot of attention is the offensive line.

Before the first training camp practice last Monday, it was the news of Zach Tom signing his extension. For the foreseeable future, the Packers will have No. 50 starting at right tackle.

Tom’s annual salary of $22 million per season will put him in the top 10 of highest paid tackles in the league. He has surely earned it, turning into the Packers’ best offensive lineman the past two seasons.

Tom joined Josh Sitton, TJ Lang and David Bakhtiari as previous 4th round picks who signed second contracts with the team. All three of those players were drafted by previous general manager Ted Thompson.

It was a strategy of Thompson to draft college tackles, even if the plan for them was to move inside to guard. Sitton and Lang both became pro bowl guards. This strategy has also been implemented by current general manager Brian Gutekunst.

After the first week of training camp, if the season were to start today, it is very likely that two of the interior starters would be former college left tackles. Sean Rhyan has become the first-team center with the current absence of Elgton Jenkins in the lineup.

Rhyan, who played left tackle at UCLA, has used his versatility to become a fixture somewhere on the offensive line. He became a reliable starter at right guard a season ago, but because of high draft picks like Jordan Morgan and Anthony Belton, Rhyan is once again competing for his spot in the starting five in training camp.

He did play some center last preseason, so being inserted there at the moment should not be a surprise so far in camp. Rhyan, who becomes a free agent after the season, is playing for either a contract extension or to be top commodity on the free agent market next spring.

The other former college tackle who has gotten attention this week is last year’s first round pick Jordan Morgan. Morgan got his only playing time last year at guard, playing both left and right guard, and with the absences of both Jenkins and Aaron Banks in practice, Morgan has shown that versatility to be a possibility as an interior lineman.

Just assuming that Jenkins will be back playing by Week 1, the versatility of both Rhyan and Morgan gives the Packers a lot of options along the line. It also gives them insurance that in case of an injury they should have a quality 6th guy who’s ready to go in a pinch or even become the next starter.

The Packers only had one of 18 games last year without its preferred offensive line, which is very rare in today’s NFL. It is likely they will start several different groups over the course of the season and it is important that players are able to play multiple spots at a high level.

In high school, you put your best linemen at tackle.

Same in college. The guys you have playing guard and center aren't good enough to be tackles. So it's no surprise that when the pros go shopping, they look at where the best guys are......which is at tackle.

I think GB is pretty much assured of very good play at LT whether it’s 63 or 77.
