Packers open preseason with double-digit win over Titans
-- The first of three milestones en route to the regular season is in the books after the Green Bay Packers' 31-17 win over the Tennesee Titans Thursday night.
After falling behind early by a 10-7 score, the Packers went on a tear and scored 24 unanswered points.
Training camp sweethearts such as quarterback Tim Boyle, wide receiver Jake Kumerow and all three rookie wide receivers -- J'Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown -- contributed to the scoring run in their own ways.
Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota -- under new head coach Mike Vrabel -- led his offense down the field to score a touchdown on their first possession of the preseason.
That was ultimately the only time in 60 minutes of exhibition football that Mike Pettine's defense seemed to be outmatched. The Titans didn't find the end zone again until the final two minutes of the game.
Both offensively and defensively, the Packers hadn't implemented the schemes they've been practicing with. According to multiple accounts, both Pettine and offensive coordinator Joe Philbin took a "vanilla" approach into Thursday night.
That could be because neither member of the coaching staff wants to unveil their plans for the regular season, or because they were operating without 18 players -- 15 starters -- who didn't suit up.
All three of the quarterbacks fighting for the No. 2 job, however, did suit up and play -- and they played fairly well.
Brett Hundley, who got the start Thursday night, played well into the second quarter and completed nine of his 14 pass attempts for 108 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Hundley fumbled once, which was the result of a strip on the ball and his interception was a wounded duck lobbed into the air due to a defender getting a hand on the ball in the middle of his throwing motion.
DeShone Kizer, acquired by the Packers in March for defensive back Damarious Randall, played deep into the third quarter and completed nine of his 18 passes for 134 yards.
Undrafted quarterback Tim Boyle played the entire fourth quarter and showed the occasional struggle with accuracy, but nonetheless delivered several impressive throws.
Boyle threw for two touchdowns -- one to receiver Jake Kumerow and another to Valdes-Scantling -- in the fourth quarter. His throw to Kumerow was a 52-yard bomb that put the Packers up by 21 points.
While the quarterbacks enjoyed their 2018 debuts, the Packers' three rookie receivers offered their own mix bag of fun.
Valdes-Scantling and St. Brown both showed what made them late-round steals for the Packers, combining for nine catches on 13 targets for 162 yards and a touchdown. Valdes-Scantling was the team's leading receiver by the end of the night.
Moore, on the other hand, could probably use a do-over.
The No. 133 overall pick in the draft struggled with his hands Thursday night, much like scouts warned of him coming out of Missouri. He had two poor drops -- one of which was a beautifully thrown ball from Boyle -- and only finished the night with three catches on seven targets.
Something became fairly obvious, whether these receivers did good or bad. Their fatal flaws are fighting inconsistency and finishing the process of the catch.
The Packers suffered two injuries against the Titans, and both were at the safety position. Jermaine Whitehead left the game with a back injury and Josh Jones left to be evaluated for a concussion.
Both injuries come just 10 days after Kentrell Brice -- the presumed starter at strong safety by September -- was carted off the practice field with an ankle injury.
The Packers stay at Lambeau Field for their next preseason game and welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers -- complete with former Green Bay safety Morgan Burnett -- into town. That game will be next Thursday at 7 p.m. CT.

Yes! A bunch of big plays with QBs clearly looking downfield and receivers getting the football. Still unimpressed when watching Hundley's footwork and mechanics, but if he has a good preseason, he might still coax out a low pick from a team willing to take a flier on him.

Unfortunately dont have the pleasure of living in GB so I couldnt watch the game. From the little ive read so far it sounded like Oren Burks was pretty active tonight and flashed the wheels a little bit. Any play in particular stand out?
Ive seen most of the offensive highlights but nothing from the defense. Is it true Fackrell had a sack???

Go to reddit and search nfl streams and there are usually a few options to watch the game on your computer. Thats what I did.
Burks looked speedy side to side. Fackrell did technically have a sack when Mariota rolled out and tried to run and Fackrell got him barely behind the line or right at the line so it counted as a sack.

I saw Burks flash, seemed like he had very good sideline to sideline speed. Tracked what was going on in the backfield. Pretty good pass coverage. Probably had some plays he wanted back, especially when Mariotta was in, but he did pretty good. I paid attention to Beigle and Donnerson ... Donnerson had good pressure and was disruptive coming from the edge. They both did a good job, a lot of near misses that were close to being sacks. I know close doesn’t count, but it was good pressure.

Burks showed his speed playing sideline to sideline. I like what I saw from the rookie.
The Titans scoring on the opening drive wasn't desirable, but playing without 7 starters- Mathews, Perry, Daniels, King, Williams, Wilkinson and Alexander - and not playing Pettine's full scheme, made it much easier to except, especially knowing that it was Rollins that gave up the big third down play on that drive.
The back up O-line is a concern.

As we move into later PS games, the Packers will need to work #12 into the rotation while still trying to prepare and assess Hundley and Kizer. Boyle's not going to get very many snaps until game 4. Given that he's not terribly athletic, I think he'll make it through to the practice squad unless he continues to look really good. In that case, I think they cut bait on #7 and keep 3 QBs.

MITM, Burks flashed sideline to sideline,and overran a couple. He made a good form tackle with some pop to it as well early. Overall he looked good. He looks bigger than I had expected.

I agree with your goods, I would like to add Jamal Williams...catching passes, touchdown was a pure effort play. The RBs making short yardage runs converting 3rd to 1st downs kept drives alive was nice to see.

Jamaal Williams last season vs Tampa made an unreal sideline catch for a crucial first down. I couldnt believe it was him who made the catch - you couldnt tell at first it happened quickly and the camera angle didnt catch a jersey number.

Moore had 7 targets and a few just missed. He also had a big drop on a great long pass by Boyle.
St. Brown's chances were mostly shorter passes, but he had one great run after the catch play.

i really think the Pack has to seriously look at 7 WR. the 3 rooks all have great potential and how can you cut Kumerow if he keeps kicking butt. these guys plus Gmo. then there's Davis and Yancey. i think any guys that are cut will not make it to the PS! i'm of the mind you keep your best players and not allocate so many LB, CB....etc.

Seeing the clip of Harold Landry bend and get around the corner at an unbelievable angle, (albeit a backup LT) was disheartening. Especially knowing we passed him up.

He tested 97th percentile in multiple tests. Now, there have been a lot of workout warriors who have flamed out. I personally don’t believe he’s a bust.

The Titans moved up to the 42nd spot to grab Landry...Just before the Packers at 45. I like Josh Jackson but I'd bet just about any amount of money had Landry and Jackson been there at 45 Gutekunst picks Landry.
Landry wasn't worth it at 14, 18, or even 27th which is where the Saints were IIRC. My point is I'll take Alexander, Jackson, the Saints #1 in 2019 AND the comfort we have a GM who was able to pull off that trade and still get Burks in another move up in the 3rd.
We can't get EVERYBODY though it's a nice thought. I think Jackson will pan out just fine too. No worries friend.

Hundley was the best all around QB on the field tonight.
Yes, we should expect that from a guy who's been in the system for years. However, to say Boyle is a lot better than Hundley based on what actually happened on the field is a mighty stretch.
I personally don't see how the Packers could (or would) retain Hundley, but he was the best QB of the three on tonight's performance.. I know, not what Packers fans want to hear.

I still thought Hundley's footwork was pretty bad, at times. If he plays well over the remaining preseason games, it will be a tough call to make. With a higher-ceiling player in Kizer and a developmental QB in Boyle, I just don't see how he sticks.

I thought his mechanics were still bad and that he got less on the ball than the other two QBs. That will translate to incompletes and INTs in regular season games. He's a proven commodity. Let's see what the other guys can do.

Bartuanseijin, I agree about Hundley's footwork and I can see what you mean about lacking a little zip on the ball comparatively, but a number of Hundley's passes were precisely placed throws at specific locations due to coverage, etc.
Example, the deep shot to Adams dropped in front of him and over his outside shoulder, putting it between Davante and the sideline, where the DB had zero chance to get to it.
Another shorter route not only did he thread the ball into a very tight window, but he placed the ball low and inside, again, where the only one able to reach the ball was his intended target.

Thanks for all the responses about Burks. Have been excited about him since we made him our 3rd round pick. Leading the team in tackles in your first NFL game no matter who was or wasnt playing is a very good start for a rookie ILB.

There was a lot of good; All three qb's but for me Boyle has the most upside, the WR's, I still thing Moore is the best of the bunch but Kumerow better stick or Rodgers will go batshit... Burkes, Williams, Gilbert... there was a lot to like for a preseason game. Can't tell what was going on on the OL but that's the biggest worry.

Not much, except he was present at the ground game. There was very limited pressure from any Packers defender. The best was Gilbert, than Fackrell. I did not noticed Odom, but Donnerson caused fumble, Biegel recovered. Hearns was mentioned one or twice, nothing special!

Fackrell set a nice edge early. GB dropped him into coverage quite a bit. I think Dobber wrote that Fackrell really should be an off the ball LB. I agree. I think Biegel is also capable of playing off the ball, but it remains to be seen if Biegel can be the pass rusher we need, so we should try him in that role too.

Even considering Kumerow's big TD reception, both he and Jmon Moore both kind of squandered tonight with multiple drops- particularly Jmon. Many were tough and contested, but those are the types of catches you want to see them make under the lights. I expect both will do much better in next week's game.
ESB and MVS both showed up tonight. Wow, MVS was impressive. He was far more consistent on the big stage than he has reportedly been in practice (and what I've seen myself). Maybe he's just one of those guys who needs it to be on the line to put his best foot forward.
It's going to be exciting watching these young WRs fight for roster spots.

I think that's really harsh. I don't think Kumerow had a drop. He did have one contested catch but the DB had half his arm between Kumerow's hands. MVS had at least one flat-out drop that you didn't mention, and another one he probably should have come down with. MVS can really get open though.

Kumerow ended up with 3 receptions on 9 targets, and Jmon ended up with 3 receptions on 10 targets. (MVS, 5/7, ESB 4/6)
I acknowledged many of the catches being tough and contested, and I'm not saying it is an indictment of the talent of the WR's.. I did spotlight that those are missed opportunities, though.
Regardless of being contested, held, or bad passes, I'm sure they want to, and will do, better next week.

I was excited to see all the receivers do well. And the QB's all had an outstanding game. I think Tim Boyle has a lot to offer. His passes were very accurate and he looked comfortable out there. It will be fun to watch the competition for roster spots again next week in their game against the Steelers, who also had a good against the Eagles. I'm hoping all the Packers do well again next week to make the decision of who stays and who doesn't a difficult one. I think Kumerow, MVS, and ESB will all make the team if they can continue the high level of play they all have shown against the Titans. The Steelers defense will make it a lot tougher, but I think the Packers can get it done. There is always room for improvement. Go! Pack! Go!

QB Boyle was throwing dimes out there, he was very aggressive down the field and if not for a couple painful drops would have had a big night. He sailed a couple over his receivers on some intermediate routes but was spot on with the deep ball. Like him a lot.
J'Mon Moore had a tough night but he was getting open and drew 7 targets, he just needs to finish and come down with the ball. He did draw a couple pass interference penalties so he contributed more than his stats show. I'm not discouraged by his effort at all but hes got some work to do.
MVS, ESB and Kumerow were all impressive and made plays. Cant wait to see how they look next week.
On defense Gilbert was the most impressive followed by Burks and Josh Jackson. Donnerson and Looney did some good things too.
The worst performances were turned in by Rollins and Bell. Murphy gave up the sack to Landry but played pretty good aside from that one play I thought. He doesn't worry me like Bell does, he looks more like a OG. If he has to play RT at all this season, hopefully Marcedes Lewis will be by his side more often than not.
Overall a nice first game by all the draft picks that played. Really hope Cole Madison gets his ass to camp soon or hes looking at a lost year.

I'll echo that sentiment: with essentially most of the 1s sitting or playing very limited snaps, these guys looked like they belonged. Very encouraging.
I think we've reached to lost year point on Madison already.

Keep One thing in Mind. A-Rod didn't play. As high as we get on Rookie WRs. A-rod will throw to his favorites. So the fight will be decided by the practices, more than the games. Davis and Allison will get their shot first. But based on what was seen last night. It's Bombs away and who can catch them. And isn't that what this team didn't have last year.

MVS not only had a big night receiving, he also showed some flash returning punts. If he keeps that up, he may well put Davis' spot on the roster in jeopardy.
J'mon had problems with drops in college and he did again last night. His hands may be a concern. You can't drop a wide open touchdown.
I agree with TK - thought Spriggs had an okay night. Bell and Murphy did not - two sacks and a couple of hurries given up between them. That needs to improve.
Best thing I saw was opponents WR's NOT running wide open through our secondary all night. First drive by Titans was a concern, but after that I thought our secondary covered pretty well. Josh Jackson looked good.

I think you're right: there will be a lot of ups and downs in this first PS game. When teams aren't really game-planning, it's hard to take too much away from it except individual effort. It's always good to see your guys outplay their guys. I think there was significantly more good than bad to be taken away from last night's performance, though.

I think the OL was a mess in run blocking. Maybe that's to be expected when they're in that first PS game and looking at a lot of bodies and combinations. Beyond that...?

Once again ill preface this "stat" with saying take it for what its worth - but Trevor Davis was Pro Football Focus #1 graded PR for the 2017-2018 season. I do think MVS can definitely be an upgrade there but I would imagine (even though its only been 1 game) he offers WAY more as a WR than Davis at this point - and I would hate to see MVS hurt on a return if he continues to look like the deep threat we have lacked

I was unable to watch the game last evening but hopefully I will have a chance to do so over the weekend.
I appreciate everyone's informative comments on the game. I have a couple of questions.
Any comments or thoughts on the Packers RBs or the Packers ground game? Was it effective? Did any of the RBs stand out in terms of how well they ran the ball? I noticed from the box score that the Packers ran the ball about 30 times.

Not much to report. Williams looks absolutely shredded, but also a bit more nimble. Should be the week one starter. Monty didn't do much, and I wasn't that impressed by Bouagnon. I thought the new guy Akeem Judd looked nice though. Didn't get much time, but has some nice wiggle and short area quickness. Oline blocking was nothing to write home about, but hopefully next week we see a bit more of a consistent ground game.

Williams showed a high motor, nice hands and trustworthy. Montgomery flashed some of his speed and quickness. The two unknown backs seemed to have potential. Probably won’t make the cut unless something unexpected happens. For the first preseason game it would be hard to make a true assessment.

RB's seemed more effective catching passes out of the backfield than anything else. No one broke any big runs, but they also didn't have any negative yardage runs either. I thought the best looking runner was a UDFA by the name of Bouagnon (sp?). O-line run blocking looked a bit subpar, but they were also missing both starting tackles. Someone else mentioned this, but Ripkowski just flat missed some blocks which is unusual for him. Altogether a pedestrian outing for the RB's and O-line.

What wasn't mentioned is that Devante Mays did not play and I don't know why. I assume he's injured. I really would like to see what he's got before we move on. Dropping those 2 fumbles really put him in the doghouse so it seems. I'm wondering if fumbling your first two carries as a running back puts you in the record book somewhere.

Was it just my old eyes...or did the defense really look fast? I loved Jackson's attitude, Gilberts hustle, and the whole team gang tackling. For an exhibition game this game was entertaining!

I believe the Packers have the best depth in preseason to work with in a long time.
Let's see who maintains and falters next week when the vanilla begins to disappear.

True. It's fun to watch your guys beat their guys, even if it's 3s vs. 3s. But this is the only time of year when 3s play 3s and these games don't count.
