Packers Perfect on 4th Down, Beat Lions 31-24

Thanksgiving Day win gives Green Bay first sweep of Detroit since 2020.

Dan Campbell’s ultra aggressiveness on fourth down has undoubtedly been his coaching identity as the head man for the Detroit Lions. The decisions seem to have worked out in Detroit’s favor more often than not the last four-and-a-half years, even the seemingly absurd ones.

Matt LaFleur is no turkey himself, and LaFleur fed Campbell multiple servings of his own recipe for Thanksgiving Thursday in a 31-24 Green Bay victory. The Packers were 3-for-3 on fourth down; the Lions were 0-for-2.

“We came in here with an aggressive mindset and I think that’s one of the ways you have to play against these guys, knowing that you’re going to have to defend four downs,” LaFleur said via packers.com. “It’s a really good football team. They’ve been one of the premier teams in the league for the last few years now . . . I thought the only way you come into this place – which is not an easy place to play – is you have to be aggressive.”

LaFleur’s first fourth-down decision occurred at the 14:19 mark of the second quarter from the Lion 22-yard line. Up 3-0, Jordan Love only needed three yards for the conversion. Instead, he matched his coach’s aggression and opted for Dontayvion Wicks up the left sideline.

Wicks had one defensive back trailing as he wheeled towards the end zone, while another flew across the field to meet him as the ball arrived. Love zipped the ball to his third-year pass catcher just in time, and Wicks made a jumping catch while managing to tap both toes in bounds for the 10-0 lead.

The Lions answered – as they would for much of the game – with their own touchdown drive, 10-7. Love then engineered another long drive, moving the ball to the Detroit two-yard line on fourth down, and only needing one yard to convert. The gunslinger connected with the outstretched hands of Romeo Doubs on a speed out at the goal line to push the lead back to 10 points, 17-7.

Detroit answered again with a touchdown as the teams entered the locker room with a 17-14 score. The Lions started the second half with the ball, and the Packer defense delivered a fourth-down play of its own.

To no surprise, Campbell elected to go for it from the Green Bay 47 on a fourth-and-3 early in the third quarter. The Lions tried an inside handoff to the electric Jahmyr Gibbs from the shot gun. Isaiah McDuffie provided the stuffing to force a turnover on downs. McDuffie – starting for an injured Quay Walker – made a similar play on the preceding third down as well, and led the team with 12 tackles.

Two plays after the turnover on downs, Love hit Christian Watson on a high, deep pass down the right sideline for a 51-yard score, 24-14. Watson toasted his man as he caught the ball in stride, similar to his long Thanksgiving score in Detroit two years ago. Watson again led Packer pass catchers in targets (10), and caught four of them for 80 yards.

The Lions answered – again – rather easily, going 71 yards in five plays, 24-21. The Packers didn’t need to pull from the fourth-down menu on the next drive. Love went back to the speed out pass at the goal line, this time teaming with Wicks, 31-21.

Green Bay gave thanks for a fortuitous bounce three plays before the score. Doubs caught a slant inside the 10-yard line and had the ball punched out from behind. Fortunately, it bounced right up off the turf to Rasheed Walker’s belly. The left tackle displayed some soft hands in securing the possession for his offense.

The Lions – again – crawled their way down the field with an 11-play, 53-yard drive. As expected, Campbell kept the offense on the field for a fourth-and-3 from the Packer 21 with 10:55 remaining. Jared Goff was flushed to his right and had an open Jameson Williams breaking out with him. Goff left the ball inside and Williams dropped the sure-fire conversion.

The drop proved to be a critical mistake by the Alabama speedster, who otherwise ran away from the Green Bay secondary for most of the game. Williams finished with seven catches for 144 yards and a touchdown after his running mate, Amon-Ra St. Brown, left the game early with an injury.

A missed pass interference call allowed the Lions to quickly get the ball back for what would ultimately be their final drive. Micah Parsons, in his closer role, sacked Goff twice on the drive. His second sack ensured Detroit would only get a field goal to make it 31-24. It also gave him 12.5 on the year, making him the first player in NFL history to have at least 12 sacks in his first five seasons (sacks became an official stat in 1982).

The Packers needed one more fourth-down play to win the game, and their star quarterback delivered. Love and the offense faced a fourth-and-3 from the Detroit 45-yard line. The Lions had spent their timeouts and with the clock under two minutes, a first down would seal the victory.

Love, unable to step into the throw due to pressure, still managed to put enough sauce on a pass over the middle to an in-breaking Wicks. Wicks, the Packers’ star receiver for Thursday, secured the high throw and the win despite losing a shoe and safety Brian Branch draped all over him.

“I’d rather go down swinging,” LaFleur said. “Sometimes it can bite you, absolutely. You just have to deal with the consequences.”

Wicks, who is finally healthy after battling injuries for most of the season, had six catches on seven targets for 94 yards and the two scores.

“I can’t say enough great things about Wicks. He’s been injured quite a bit, he’s been in and out of the lineup. But he made critical plays all game. I’m just really proud of him and his mental toughness to stay with it,” LaFleur said.

Love continued his Thanksgiving Day excellence. He completed 18-of-30 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns, good for a 124.2 quarterback rating.

Despite the problems with Williams, the Green Bay defense had the Lions’ ground game in a food coma all afternoon. Gibbs finished with 68 yards on 20 carries while David Montgomery had 32 yards on eight rushes.

The Packers (8-3-1) are now a half game behind the Bears in the division (8-3), who play the Eagles tomorrow. The NFL’s oldest rivalry will reconvene next Sunday at Lambeau Field, and then again two weeks later in Chicago.

Other Notes

  • Devonte Wyatt had his left ankle rolled up during Parsons’ second sack and had to be carted off the field. LaFleur said it doesn’t look good.
    • “I’m sick for him, I’m sick for us. That’s a critical loss for our defense, obviously. I can’t say enough great things about him in terms of watching him mature, not only as a football player but as a person. I’ve got a lot of love for Devonte Wyatt and I think the whole locker room does too,” he said.

That is good writing! I think most fans would have been all over MLF for the first 4th down gamble in a long sideline pass play rather than a more sure conversion. I for one thought it a poor gamble. But...sometimes it works and then they're all heros.

I admit, the last 4th down go had me saying "no!". Then it worked with a high throw to Wicks who plucked it perfectly.

I look forward to Reed back to join Watson and Doubs...but Wicks is back too! The Kid gets open. And he is snatching the ball now...and not dropping anything. Watch Wicks!

I really didn't think they were going to snap the football there. Sometimes you're a riverboat gambler coming up aces and sometimes it ends up costing your job. I agree: I was thinking punt, pin Detroit deep, and play defense...but, hey! It worked out!

Analytics says...analytics says...I really don't like the broad application of analytics to NFL games and play calls like that because analytics don't have "feel".

LaFleur called a good game. Last week he was conservative. Today he was an agressive HC. It worked.

Dang...this is a good D with a play making QB and RBs and WRs few teams have...and an OL that is showing some sand at least.

Bares next. Could be a run toward something we have not seen for over a decade.

In terms of aggression, MLF finally showed some with his 4th down gambles along with throwing short for 1st downs on 3rd and 3 instead of his normal 30-40 yard bombs! Both were pleasant surprises!

If he could somehow get over his insistence on running the ball on every first down, maybe we wouldn't need to go on 4th as often.

I have not been a fan of constantly running on first down. Today, MLF fooled me and did some fake runs and had the ball in the air! So glad he got aggressive.

I think recently there've been plenty of opponents who have shown themselves to be vulnerable to the run game. Detroit is pretty stout and you need to attack their secondary. Even then, the Packers leaned on the run game to about a 50% clip.

Turning point of game:
Campbell bets on "sure" 4th down conversion.
Stuffed.
2 plays later ---- 51 yard bomb to Watson.
Poetic justice.

Packers depth was the difference in this game. Reed and Golden out. No problem, Watson and Wickes played great. Wyatt gets hurt, defense keeps making plays.

Plus, both sides of the ball came through in clutch situations.

Great win! Now Philadelphia beat Bears tomorrow and Packers kick 'em while they're down next week.

Actually Wyatt got hurt on the defense's last play of the game--the sack by Parsons that forced the Lions to kick a field goal. The Lions never got the ball back after that.

But the WR depth was definitely huge.

Depth is often overlooked. Good teams like the 49ers can struggle as they are a vet team who have a fine group of starters but don't have the best depth.

No team has great depth everywhere, but the Packers have better depth than most teams (and they are young too). Injuries are a part of every season and you WILL see your backups tested through a long season.

When you can get good stuff from a Wicks, a Haversik, a Malik Willis, a Kinnard, a Brinson, you are well on your way to a good season.

It's been awhile since I've been on here, but I wanted to mention a few things.

I like Doubs, but games like today prove that GB needs to make other players the focus of the game plan. Wicks and Watson absolutely tore it up today. Watson had some contested catches get batted and dropped one or two but he made some huge plays at critical moments and Wicks was sensational. I absolutely love the fact that MLF finally let Love rip it, even WITH the success running the football. Jordan Love is now 3-0 on Thanksgiving with 9 touchdowns and listening to the phrase "wait until Thanksgiving" 40,000 times since week 1 has been insufferable. I'm glad we swept the Lions, even if we have to hear about the refs for the rest of the season (it was a catch, Lafleur screamed for TO and Watson was heavily interfered with, idgaf what anyone says) and now we move on to Chicago. Boy I hope we win that game, because I am SICK AND TIRED of hearing from the Bears faithful that Williams is undefeated at Lambeau. This was a strong kickoff for Toyotathon Love, lets keep it rolling GB!

Go pack go!

I agree that spreading it around pays dividends. It was my biggest criticism of late-career Rodgers in Green Bay. He got so crazy fixated on Adams that the other receivers almost never saw the ball, and frankly, I think they weren't mentally prepared for big moments. Rodgers and Adams were incredible with one another but a quality defense will figure a one-dimensional offense out.

'Nuff about the past, yes beat the bears!!!

Finally, LaFleur is not only starting to trust Love, but to rely on him in crucial situations. This was MLF's comment when asked about the game clinching fourth down conversion on fourth and three with less than two minutes on the clock:
“I’d rather go down swinging,” LaFleur said. “Sometimes it can bite you, absolutely. You just have to deal with the consequences.”
That was a gutsy call from a guy who seemed loathe to go for broke when push came to shove.
Last year, the Packers only won one division game. This year, so far, they're 3-0. It is time to separate the pretenders from the contenders. And right now, the Packers are trending up.

I said that the only hope the Lions had was Gibbs. Goff and the o line was pourius the last two games.
The Lions actually gave Goff time today and he made some passes and the irony the run game failed.
I was shocked the pack went for it on 4th down. Wow. Great game by Love.

If you want to complain about bad stuff by MLF, you should also acknowledge the good, or you are just a fan with an agenda.

Well, you're right to an extent. I can’t deny the Packers have won eight games, and unless the team bus falls into a sinkhole, they’re headed for the playoffs. And I also can’t deny that yesterday was actually fun, a word I don’t normally associate with this offense. Le Fleur finally coached like a man who discovered a page he'd never come across in his playbook. Foot on the gas, receivers involved, an offense that looked alive instead of stitched together with bubble screens and wishful thinking.

So yes, credit where it’s due. Yesterday he looked great. But we’ve seen this version of Le Fleur before, and then it vanishes like it was only here on a weekend pass. I really hope this is the new normal, because even though I don’t trust his instincts, I want the Packers to win. And if this keeps up, I’ll personally lead a parade down Lombardi Avenue with a marching band, six dancing cheese curds, a llama in a Rodgers jersey, and a giant float of Le Fleur winking and calling a play over a loudspeaker that isn't a run up the middle.

Here is something I cut and pasted, from a post made on another site. In it, I suggest the Packers probably go back to a more conservative approach against the Bears. It won't make you happy, but it might be a key to beating the Bears.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Chicago defense makes it interesting in how the Packers scheme for them.

Unlike in the past, the Bears defense is not performing as one of the best in the league. They are 27th in total defense and 25th in DVOA. However they are ranked no.1 in turnover rate, so for the Packers, not giving up turnovers is especially important. They are 25th in completion % allowed and 30th in yards per carry run defense.

So, how do I think the Packers play them ? I think they will be pretty conservative with plenty of run plays and long drives. That is not what many fans want, but its what I suspect the Packers do. The good news is that with the Bears defense only ranking 25th in completion %, when the Pack do decide to air it out, they have a good chance of success.

This isn't a tactic that works for all teams - but for the Bears it looks good.
