Packers Periscope: Vikings at Packers

Let's raise the Packers Periscope and look back at the past, present and future of the Packers and Vikings.

Ah yes, another week, another crushing defeat to a bad football team. I think it's time to accept that now, the Green Bay Packers are the bad football team that everyone has marked as a win. And up next, a familiar foe coming off a huge victory at home after the San Francisco 49ers, the Minnesota Vikings. Will the Packers be able to put together a complete football game and take down the suddenly surging Purple and Gold?

Before we get into that, let's raise the Packers Periscope and look back at the past, present and future of the Packers and Vikings.

The Past

The Packers lead the all-time series with the Vikings 65-57-3, with the series being relatively split 5-4-1 since 2018. The most recent being New Years' Day 2023, when the Packers, in the midst of a late-season win streak, absolutely rocked Minnesota 41-17.

But going back a bit further, I'd like to take a peek back at one the most thoroughly enjoyable wins over Minnesota I can remember, and it wasn't even that long ago. On December 23, 2019, with the NFC North on the line, the Green Bay Packers, led by first-year head coach Matt LaFleur, went into the Giant Bird Killer, AKA US Bank Stadium, and showed up their rivals 23-10 en route to the division championship and a game closer to securing a bye in the playoffs.

The game didn't start off very well, however. Early turnovers and drives stalling out plagued any sort of Packers momentum early. Three Mason Crosby field goals were all the Pack could muster by half, while Minnesota nabbed a Stefon Diggs touchdown and Dan Bailey field goal giving them a 10-9 halftime lead.

Much like the 2023 Packers, something happened at halftime. First off, Za'Darius Smith was an absolute machine, getting to Cousins for 3.5 sacks during the game. He was a one-man wrecking crew, and boy, was it fun to watch Z that season. He was fantastic. Offensively, remained a bit of a slog, but the Packers went up 16-10 in the third on an Aaron Jones 12-yard run. Late in the fourth, the Packers were looking to stomp on Minnesota's throat - and they did. Running to his left, Jones again caught the corner and housed a 56-yard touchdown run to all but seal it for the Packers. It was a total exclamation point on a total surprise of a season, given new coach and Aaron Rodgers, who did not remotely look Aaron Rodgers in 2018.

It's one I'll fondly remember as the Packers and Rodgers re-establishing themselves as the Kings of the North.

The Present

Well, time to deflate the high after reflecting on a huge win, but in reality, it's been a bit of a polarizing last few weeks for both of these teams. Minnesota, starting off 1-5 and looking totally hapless, has rattled off back-to-back wins, at Chicago and at home against SanFran. Meanwhile, as we're well aware, Green Bay hasn't won in over a month and has lost on the road twice in embarrassing fashion twice with a bye week between.

The Vikings, for better or worse, enter the game with a little ambiguity at quarterback with leader Kirk Cousins not under contract beyond this year. Will he get traded? It seems not. Will he back? That remains to be seen. But, he is coming off of one his better efforts, especially in primetime, in Monday Night's win. However, their offensive line is a tremendous question mark, with Cousins being sacked 15 times through Week 6. Miraculously, he avoided any sacks against the Niners, but the Vikings remain the only team in the league without a rushing touchdown. Gang, so help me if they run wild over the Packers...

Injury-wise, they've been without Justin Jefferson for a few weeks, and he'll be out again this week. And given Jaire Alexander's inability to stay healthy this season, we'll call that one a wash.

Meanwhile, Green Bay is feeling the brunt of their youth. It's a combination of issues, which makes it all the more difficult to diagnose. And with injuries popping up every week, they're unable to gain stability with who is playing. And speaking of questionable offensive line play, the Packers certainly have that. Penalties, missed blocks, inability to run block... they're trying and failing at all of it.

This game will -- sigh -- again be about whether or not the Packers can score points. I'd expect the defense to hold Minnesota to around or under 20 points, but can the offense score more than that? It's another somewhat forgiving matchup, at home no less, and another winnable game even for a team struggling like Green Bay.

The Future

Noon Lambeau time, November 29, Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Vikings come in as a slight betting favorite at -1.5, which checks out given the last few weeks. Weather-wise, we're looking at low 40s and a rain/snow mix. Hello winter! It will be interesting to see how both teams handle the weather, given how Minnesota was slipping ALL OVER Lambeau Field a year ago.

As I mentioned above, this game is about the Packers offense. If they can show any semblance at running the football and avoiding penalties, they have a chance here. And bringing a dome team into the elements is always a nice advantage, especially when Kirk Cousins is one of those dome players.

In all, I expect more of the same. Cushy, bending-not-breaking defense, an offense that will struggle to score. Will they be able to get those extra few points that have stifled them this season and creep closer to .500? Or is Minnesota figuring it out and getting their ship righted? Can't wait to find out.

"The Vikings come in as a slight betting favorite at -1.5"

-1.5 ???
You got to be kidding. I am thinking more like -7.5 for the Vikings considering the 2 teams recent performance.

Thanks Tony for the overview, but you're way more optimistic than I am.
This could be a total meltdown game for the pack if the leadership of our coaching staff and veteran players doesn't take over.
I'm giving two predictions, one with strong leadership and one without:
a - Pack 23-20
b - queens 34-13
If I had too much money I'd put some on the queens and points.
GPG!

I fear this is right.

4 out of 6 one score games because the Packers' offense hasn't shown up. Against MN this would mean a blow out considering how the Vikes are playing lately. If GB has some offense for all 4 quarters however....

Which will it be?

Without Jones at full health, they don't have any outside running game.

Packers young offense has shown they can't adjust to anything other than what they have already seen and/or scouted. Any DC who doesn't want to be fired knows this and is going to keep throwing new things at this freshman/sophomore Packers offense.

I'd rather see them throw on every play in the first half to see what we have in QB, receiving RBs, WRs, and TEs than to see the offense play afraid of their shadow.

Defense is seeing the injury bug (just like the offense). Cousins is drooling over the defense with injuries.

Correction: Gutes young offense.

Just sayin

If a team enters the NFL season with this much youth and inexperience at offensive skill positions...
Then wtf are we to expect?
Or better yet, what did Gute expect?
Putting a roster together is his job.

Not MLF's, not Love's, it's Murphy/Gutes job.

Before the season, Gute was asked his expectations this season.
His response was that the standard in Green Bay is always the same. (Super Bowl?)
Well, i laughed and thought to myself...you better start praying Gute.

Before this season i said the goal should be .500, or if you're an idealist and dreamer, maybe making the playoffs.
Of course, no one wanted to hear that because i wasn't 'Carrying The G'.

This season on offense is nothing more than a 17 game training camp.
We have a moron viking fan pretending to be a Packer fan down the hall saying the Packers should tank the season, in hopes of drafting Caleb Williams.

My son-in-law who is a Vikings fan sent me a text that the Vikings were going to win. I sent this back "tell me something that I do not know".

A dome team on the road, in the weather, on a short week is not a sure thing. Also, the last time these teams met in Lambeau, the Packers embarrassed the Vikings.

Yes Sir......You never know, matchups are different, environment is different, etc.

In the NFL, things change week to week, just because team X beat team Y, doesn't mean team X beats team Z, who lost to team Y.

Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason, much like Gutes 3rd round draft picks.

As I said before -= and after watching the Queens play the 49er's - as much as I hate the Queens - they are not a bad football team. Unlike last year when their record was better than their play and they managed to win one possession games - this year they have lost a few and their D and O seem to be trending up. Unless Laflower comes up with a better Offensive plan - Love will be sitting on his butt or running for his life - they bring it up front and they stopped the run except for a few big plays by one of the best back in the business ( Chris Mc). And we dont seem to be able to get to the passer and even against a fast D front Cousins completed a lot of balls under pressure . Bottom line is that we lose by at least 4 scores

Their D is bad. Then again so is Denver’s. If we roll out the same iffense we saw through the 6 quarters up to the second half last week, then their D won’t be a factor. Ours might be.

The o lt Defensive Coordinator that can make are offense look competent is Joe Barry.

How does this man and lafluer continue to cash checks ? These two men are thr true MVPS of the league for the ability to keep cashing checks week in and week out

Everyone here in Minny knows that Captain Kirk can wet the bed in any game. Absent that meltdown the Vikings win by 14.

The Vikings are a bit blitz happy so I expect Love will be on the move...a lot...he wont have much time to go through his progressions, if he even does...seems like he doesn't...it will take a a really good effort by the offense to win this game...sadly, playing at Lambeau isn't the sure thing it used to be...

I got the Vikes by 24. I don't see the Packers even scoring except maybe a field goal or two. They just put what 20 something on a very good defense of the Niner's. They gave up points by a pretty good offense too.
If they win its a tie with the Packers and closing in on the Lions. The Vike's more then likely will take the NFC North.
The Lions are over rated and da bears are not even also rans.
Enjoy the game. Drink large volumn's of alcohol. Think deeply about what it could have been with better drafting and having two cents for some good free agents.

Hate to say it, but we are going to get our socks beaten off us. Our team has a lot of talent, but coaching sucks on offense and defense.

I'm predicting that the Viqueens will lay a dud coming off a big win and the Pack will win the turnover battle with Campbell back!! Watson FINALLY will get on track and our running game will catch them blitzing and burn them!! No Jefferson helps big time! GPG!
