Packers Periscope: Week 13 vs Philadelphia Eagles

The Green Bay Packers are tasked with taking care of a 3-7-1 Philadelphia Eagles team in week 13. The 2020 season hasn’t gone the way the Eagles have hoped, but in a dreadful NFC East, they are still in the hunt for the division. Green Bay can’t take Philadelphia lightly, seeing that they aren't short of talent on either side of the ball.

The Packers should be seeking revenge against the Eagles after they handed them their first loss of the season last year in week four. Philadelphia outplayed Green Bay with their physicality, dominating in the trenches on offense and defense. In many ways, that game served as an effective way of beating the 2019 Packers- just ask the San Francisco 49ers.

The Eagles rushed for 176 yards, while Green Bay’s backfield could only muster 77 of their own and less than four yards per carry. Aaron Rodgers did everything he could to keep the Packers in it, completing 34 passes for 422 passing yards and two touchdowns. Davante Adams was on the receiving end of 10 of those passes and racked up 180 yards before exiting the game with a toe injury. On the final drive, Rodgers was picked off at the one-yard line trying to fit a slant to Marquez Valdes-Scantling and send the game to overtime.

In the history of matchups between these two teams, Green Bay still owns the bragging rights. They lead the all-time series 27-17, including playoffs, and have won two of the last three. Rodgers is 4-1 against Philadelphia during his career.

Rodgers will try to outduel a laboring Carson Wentz, who is currently having the worst season of his career. In 2019, Wentz threw for three touchdowns against the Packers’ defense, but that shouldn’t be the case this time. Wentz leads the NFL with 15 interceptions in 2020 and has a passer rating of 73.4. The Eagles quarterback hasn’t been the only reason for the team’s downfall, but he certainly hasn’t done much in the way of helping them get their head above water.

Philadelphia has battled injuries this year, however, they are still dangerous after taking the Seattle Seahawks down to the wire last week. That said, there’s no excuse for Green Bay to drop this one being at home and facing a team possibly considering a rebuild for younger talent. For some reason, this game still doesn’t feel like it’s already in the bag by any means.

Wentz could very well get hot this week, and running back Myles Sanders could have himself a good outing against a teetering Packers run defense. They also got a little healthier after activating tight end, Zach Ertz, off injured reserve this week. Ertz has been on IR since week six and was the team’s leading receiver in last year’s meeting.

On offense, Green Bay will have to account for Eagles defensive playmakers such as Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, Fletcher Cox, and Darius Slay. Slay was their most notable acquisition this offseason, but he is a familiar face from his days in Detroit. Adams should have fun lining up across from an old rival and still one of the league’s best corners.

The key to the Packers winning this week could yet again come down to who wins upfront. When Green Bay has faced more physical opponents, they have been known to yield rather than push back. The likes of Kenny Clark, Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Rashan Gary need to do their part in making Wentz as uncomfortable as possible. It shouldn’t be too hard as he’s been sacked the most in the NFL this season at 46 times. Also, the middle of the defense needs to remain physical and finish tackles so Sanders doesn’t have a career day.

Offensively, the Packers need to commit and stick to the run game similar to how they did a week ago against the Chicago Bears. Rodgers will be able to air it out plenty, but running the ball effectively will open things up more. It will be tougher with no Corey Linsley this week, but Green Bay needs to show they are still capable of a viable rushing attack and protecting Rodgers.

The Packers are a December team, and now they have the opportunity for a strong finish in the final stretch of the season.

An old, out of shape, retired rent-a-cop from NY demanding that professional athletes in the NFL to "show some balls".....WOW

And per most of your posts we know that you know nothing about football. Still wanting to trade our MVP caliber QB so he can experience another SB with another team, while destroying our salary cap in the process? Pretty sure you pushed that nonsense, ad nauseum, during the past off season.

Or how about your prediction that GB would be, AT BEST, an 8-8 non-playoff team this year?

Nothing like beating bad teams right 13 times? Sorry if I show my frustration that the Packers management refuse to surround Rodgers with talent just like Favre , 2 5 plus years with 2 hall of fame QB's and 2 rings is all good with you right? So a winning record to you is all th as that matters? You dairy farmers need to toughen up a little , most of us here are not happy with participation trophies.

And maybe you should root for one of your crappy NY teams. They can't even beat bad teams.

Must be great living in that rat infested, crime ridden city. I've never been on a dairy farm in my life, but I'd take that any day over that overcrowded, polluted cesspool that you live in.

Do not sleep on the Eagles. They are only a couple of players away from being a playoff team. They very much remind me of the 2008 Packers team. The injuries and one score losses was insane. Some years the ball doesn't bounce your way, looks like it the Eagles turn in the respect. The Packers are the more complete team at this stage of the season. The Eagles flaws are glaring on the offensive side, with the sheer number of mental mistakes by Wentz as their starting QB this season shocking. The Eagles defense even with missing core players is one tough unit. They pretty much stomped a good Seahawk offense into the ground. Still, if the Packers play a complete game in all three phases, they should win. Of course, outside the Bears game none of the units have played a complete game all season. If the Packers don't let down, they should win against this wounded but dangerous Eagle team. We'll see....

Want to see our new big man up front on the D line, or at least Winn. Let’s free up Clark to wreak havoc. Let’s manhandle that O line.

I don't get the impression the Packers take any opponent lightly, the NFL is merciless and everyone is playing for their jobs so the days of teams laying down or being "can't lose" opponents may not be over but are drastically reduced.

I have heard Nags talk about not over committing to the run as last year and others sticking to the run. Time will tell, like any game play to your strengths, try and stay less predictable through balance while not too stubborn to know when to make an adjustment.

I thought the packers really outplayed philly last year and should of won that game. I'm not a need another receiver guy but if there was a game where it looked like they needed one , last year it was against Philly after Devonte went down.

CoachDino, it would be nice to get our top receiver's name right. Otherwise when you put out opinions about receivers (or lack thereof), it will not carry much weight.

I thought the Philly game last year came down to our inability to convert short yardage.

I’m not a tricky guy. Put a defensive tackle, or guard, in at fullback and double team at the point of attack. Pull the tackle from the other side to help push the pile

They were using Wagner at a power post in lieu of the TE and seemed to work, then they went away from it.

I just hope that we dont pull a Minnie - slow start and lack of desire. But I think that most will remember last year. And AR missed the open guy to win the game with his INT - and Adams was on the sideline. But every year is different and we are a little healthier. But we need to play a complete game. In watching the Shawks victory last week - they fiddled around in the red zone. This team is too good inside the 5. But we have Adams and AR so I think that we can get that done. But we need a lot of pressure on Wentz and if the ball comes to us we need to catch it - directed to - King we need to catch it. It is going to be interesting to see what our new return man does. Hopefully Austin gets out on O and runs those jet sweeps - even if it is just to carry a guy or two with him and opens it up for our other guys especially the tight ends. Weather looks good 37 and not much of a wind. Lets go get them - and run it up early.

Strength against strength. Eagles have one of the league's leading pass rush units and the Packers have one of the best pass blocking units. Looking forward to watching the match up.
