Packers Practice Roundup: August 14, 2022

The Packers got three players back from the PUP list, released one player and signed his replacement.

The Packers got some reinforcement back, though they engaged only in individual drills on the sidelines.

GENERAL/PERSONNEL:

New injuries from game not practicing today: Leavitt (shoulder) Galeai (elbow) Dafney (knee) Winfree (groin) Byers (toe).  Dougherty

Devonte Wyatt back after missing Friday’s game. Juwann Winfree (groin), Tipa Galeai (elbow), Kabion Ento (toe), Akial Byers (toe), Dallin Leavitt (shoulder), Tariq Carpenter (knee) the new DNPs. Dafney, Gaines, Savage, Bakhtiari, Vaughn, Crosby, Schneider, Hill still DNPs. 2) Matt LaFleur says safety Dallin Leavitt will be out “a while” after suffering a shoulder injury while forcing a fumble on Friday night.  Schneidman

Akial Byers off to the side in a walking boot. Hate to see that.  Herman

LaFleur said that G Elgton Jenkins, WR Christian Watson and TE Robert Tonyan are coming off the PUP. They will start out doing individual drills.  Silverstein

LaFleur said the door isn't closed on Jenkins, Watson and Tonyan playing in the preseason, but he said don't count on it. Coming off PUP means they can't be put on PUP when the season starts, so they will be on the 53-man roster when the regular season starts.  Silverstein  [After making the 53, they could be place on the IR, I suppose.]

Elgton Jenkins said he knew two weeks ago he had a chance to be off PUP list in camp.  Found out this morning today would be his first practice.  2) Robert Tonyan said his goal was always to be back in camp, never thought he would start season on PUP.  Wood  [So, Jenkins, Tonyan, and WR Christian Watson were all taken off of the PUP list today and returned to practice.]

Randall Cobb also back at practice today. Don’t see Dominique Dafney.  2) Devonte Wyatt back practicing.  3) Innis Gaines, Kylin Hill, Donte Vaughn, Darnell Savage, Bakh, & Schneider all working w/ rehab group.  4) Meanwhile it sounds like Dallin Leavitt’s injury is serious.  Herman

Matt LaFleur on Elgton Jenkins' best spot on offensive line when he returns in full: "Where he's going to play, I think time will tell. I don't want to commit to the left side, I don't want to commit to the right side. I don't want to commit to tight end."  Wood

Two former Packers draft picks - Kingsley Keke & Kamal Martin, were both released ahead of this weeks' roster cut downs from 90 to 85.  Herman

Breaking: Aaron Rodgers shaved his mustache.  Schneidman  [Is it too much to hope for the loss of the man-bun?  TGR]

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

No 2-minute drill for Jordan Love. He got 30 minutes of work Friday night in SF, and he’ll get plenty more this week.  Wood  [Maybe so, but he has not done well in them.  Aaron Rodgers has been better, but not good at them, either.  Rodgers does run 2-minute drills even though he will see plenty more of them.]

Matt LaFleur says Amari Rodgers needed to not get stuck behind DB vs 2-high look on Jordan Love's 3rd pick. That said, he acknowledges Love didn't need to throw ball there: "We still shouldn't have thrown it there. The play should have gone off schedule, but it is what it is."  Wood

Between the drops and the wrong routes, the Packers offense threatened to undermine Jordan Love’s introduction to his third preseason. The composure he showed had Matt LaFleur singing his praises, no matter the box score. “It was a smooth operation.”  2) Matt LaFleur says he was “pleased” with Jordan Love’s performance: “We’ve just got to clean up everything around him.”  Wood

[I mean, the guy led a TD drive in the 2-minute after throwing 3 straight picks, the first two not his fault. That’s called poise.  2)  Thought Jordan Love made a fair point during postgame: His pass to Amari Rodgers on third INT was thrown too much behind his WR. Didn’t have anywhere else to go with rest of the Packers' route concept going haywire, but what became a pick should have just been incomplete. 3) Don't get why Twitter is down on Jordan Love. Fired it with more confidence than we've seen. Showed poise outside the pocket. Composed when things went wrong. Moved the offense and made the plays that were there. Two of 3 picks weren't on him. I'd give him a solid B.  4) Jordan Love could have thrown a better ball on the second INT, but a WR can't have it wrestled away like that. Romeo Doubs would be the first to tell you.  Wood [Ryan Wood seems to be working hard here to exonerate.  The throw to Amari was inaccurate and should have just been thrown away instead, and the placement of the pass to Doubs was not good, despite whatever Doug Farrar thinks.  TGR]

Rodgers hits Lazard over the middle then Cobb over the middle for nice gains. Offense running up tempo right now.  2) Samori Toure finds some nice separation on an intermediate crossing route. Love underthrows it a bit but Toure adjusts for a sliding catch. Nixon in coverage.  Herman

Samori Toure in with the 1s for two-minute drill, and he bites on Rodgers’ hard count for a false start.  2) Hard count in full effect today. Now Rodgers gets Randy Ramsey to bite. Douglas picked off the free play, and Rodgers responds with a jump ball to Aaron Jones, who climbs Vernon Scott for the TD. Enagbare probably would’ve sacked Rodgers, but a nice catch, nonetheless.  Schneidman

LaFleur happy with the pass protection vs. 49ers.  Huber

RUNNING BACKS:

Aaron Rodgers rolls right and throws a jump ball to the left end zone on 4th & 5 from the 9 at end of 2-minute drill, and Aaron Jones won the jump ball over Eric Stokes. Nice catch from the RB over a corner, though the defense might disagree with it being a Jones catch.  2) AJ Dillon with a nifty, one-handed catch on a bubble pass from Aaron Rodgers thrown behind him. Turned to adjust, and the back just stuck in his left hand. He wasn’t supposed to make those kinds of plays out of Boston College. Impressive.  Wood

TIGHT ENDS:

Meanwhile Rodgers is dealing over the middle - hits Tyler Davis in stride.  2) Really want to see Tyler Davis succeed but he’s had a quiet camp and that was a roughhhhh game last night. Big few weeks for him coming up.  Herman

Tonyan don’t need no stinking brace.  Huber  [Jenkins wore a sleeve over his leg and Watson appears to be wearing sweatpants.  TGR]

OFFENSIVE LINE:

OL: Yosh - JRJ - Myers - Hanson - Newman.  Herman

Zach Tom at LG instead of Jon Runyan for 2-minute drill. The Packers think the roomie can play everywhere.  Wood  [Tom played LG with the ones for the entire two-minute session, and then Runyan returned to LG with the ones, per Schneidman]

Zach Tom again at left guard for JRJ. Really perplexing to be honest. Tough to know the reason but no way JRJ isn’t one of their top 5 OL right now.  2) Runyan is back with ones at LG.  Herman

Jenkins after practice: "Tomorrow I might be playing left tackle, might be playing guard, center. Just choose one position a day and knock the rust off at each one."  2) Elgton Jenkins setting like a right tackle [during individual drills on the sideline]. Do with that info what you will. Plus a cameo walkthrough by David Bakhtiari.  Schneidman

O-line to start the second half (left to right): Caleb Jones, Cole Van Lanen, Jake Hanson, Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom.  2) Packers starting offensive line is indeed: Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Hanson, Newman. Demovsky  [Okay, this is about the game in SF, not about this practice.  I included it because it seems interesting.  TGR]

DEFENSIVE LINE:

Packers 2nd year DT TJ Slaton looks lighter and quicker off the ball... If he can provide this type of juice - with the other DL additions... Would be a lovely contribution! This front is stout!  Ben Fennell  [Regarding the game against SF.  TGR]

LINEBACKERS:

[As to the list of players not on PUP that won’t play tonight]:  Hamilton is the main surprise.  Herman  [So, the Packers regarded Hamilton as a veteran and included him as a guy who wouldn't play against SF.  TGR]

Hard to tell pass rush without pads, but I had Preston Smith and Kingsley Enagbare for sacks on Aaron Rodgers in the 2-minute drill. Of course, the offense might disagree with that.  Wood

Enagabare with a key pressure on 4th down against Newman but Rodgers fades away and throws up a prayer that Aaron Jones answers as he skies for a massive, clutch catch. Wow play from Jones. Whole offense explodes in celebration.  [Same play as under RBs, but Enagbare beat Newman is new information.  Since Newman is a putative starter, that pushes the credit to Enagbare up a notch.  TGR]

Enagbare with a nice pass rush vs Royce Newman for a pressure. Rodgers steps up and delivers a dart to Amari.  Herman  [Ditto - duplicate but more information. Enagbare had a nice game against SF and continues to "stack" success, as the coaches say.  TGR]

Kingsley Enagbare was in Aaron Rodgers’ face three times during that two-minute drill.  Schneidman  [No pads today]

Another practice - another pressure by Rashan Gary, working over Royce Newman.  Herman  [Sounds like Newman is not having a good day.  TGR]

Man these linebackers are fasssstttt. De’Vondre all over an outside run by Jones. Been the same thing all camp with Campbell & Quay flying to the sidelines. Not just outside - Campbell stuffs a Dillon run inside too. Campbell has had a GREAT camp.  Herman

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Matt LaFleur says Gabe Brkic "tweaked a hammy" in pregame warmup in San Francisco, necessitating the Packers signing Ramiz Ahmed. Between Brkic's hammy and Mason Crosby's knee, they're banged up at kicker.  Wood  [Looks like Brkic donated it to science just prior to attempting the field goal in Friday's game.]

Packers released K Gabe Brkic.  Schneidman  [The Packers did not announce that they waived Brkic with an injury designation, per Justis Mosqueda, but stay tuned.  TGR]

No ref to help but the new kicker appears to have hit from 33 and 40.  2) The Packers have a new kicker [Ahmed] who made a 61-yard field goal during the USFL season. Huber

Big news out of Green Bay. As to today's practice, Enagbare probably had the best day. Newman the worst day. Gary was doing his thing. Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon are good. As a note, Enagbare is wearing number 55 for the Packers, but strangely, I could not find a photo of him in a GB uniform.

We should make some effort to distinguish how Newman performs at RT versus RG. Indeed, I am just assuming that he was at RT when he encountered Enagbare and Gary. Ditto for Hanson at guard and center and Nijman at LT and RT. I think doing this for Tom is darn near hopeless, but that is probably a good thing.

Kingsley Keke and Kamal Martin were released early before Tuesday's cuts to 85. Goes to show how thin the depth on defense was the last few seasons compared to now. Keke played 51% of snaps in the 12 games he played last year.

TGR, Newman is pretty clearly not a tackle. It sounds like he was beat like a drum by Enagbare and others all practice. I can only imagine what would happen against elite pass rushers. Were they just trying him there in case of emergency??

I try to provide all the information I find. The only info I might possibly have is from a few tweets I didn't think were worthy of inclusion in the roundup.

As to Newman, they sure gave him a lot of snaps at RT. But don't look at that in a vacuum. It may be that they wanted to give Hanson a long look at RG, and thus kicked Newman to RT. Still, a lot of RT snaps for Newman even if that is so. Earlier, they were giving Van Laanen a longish look at RT, and then tried him at OG, most recently at LG. They also seem to have wanted to give Nijman some reps at RT. They gave Tom snaps at all five positions (it is either four or five of the possible positions), and he graded (by PFF) well at LT, though it was later in the game, so against the twos and threes.

Jenkins while working on the sidelines did his drills as if he were a right tackle. Who did Butkus like most at RT of the other candidates? If it is Nijman, then things depend on whether Bakh will be ready for week one. And who did the coaches like most at RG?

What is clear is that Runyan will start at LG and Myers at center. At least, I bet a modest amount on that proposition, barring injury.

Myers at C is totally clear. Runyan is at LG in almost every scenario, the exception being: if everybody is healthy, I think the best 5 might be, from left to right: Bakhtiari-Jenkins-Myers-Runyan-Nijman. But there is also a solid argument for Bakhtiari-Runyan-Myers-Newman-Jenkins.

Really good news to hear Jenkins is off PUP list. Newman is an adequate RG, but I am not sure he is a tackle in the NFL. Would be great to see Jenkins at tackle and have Newman slide back into his RG spot. That would be a stronger O-line for the season opener than Hanson at RG and Newman at RT. Wouldn't mind seeing Hanson take over Patrick's role as the backup swiss army knife of the interior line.

Glad Enagbare is starting to show up when the pads are on. Strength was always his forte and that doesn't show as well in non-contact work. He may push for playing time as the fourth OLB.

Hamilton was on the injury report prior to the game. He apparently suffered his injury during the prior practice and was listed out before kickoff. I’m not sure why his absence was a surprise. A memory blip perhaps.

Brkic was injured (hamstring) in warm ups and was waived injured. Probably explains some of what followed playing through it. Tough game for fringe players.

Good to see Toure getting some time with the ones. He seems very good at adjusting to the ball too.

As I suspected, Enagbare is showing up now that contact is ramped up. Good to see that now carrying over into non padded opportunities and successes. I think he will be a useful piece this year. Probably with Garvin. 5th might be a scrap because Hamilton has looked worth a spot and Galeai/Ramsey are the DPR/cover types and all are banged up. Kobe Jones could yet make a run if given more snaps.

I did wonder if Rodgers was one of those who messed up his route. (He over runs the CB and then trails him as if he were one), but Love shouldn’t be throwing to where he expects his receiver to be. Or perhaps I should say it’s unwise to do so with those he’s working with now.

At this point Enagbare is the better rusher and Garvin the better run defender so they should compliment each other as far as giving Gary and Preston breathers. Don't think you want either of them dropping into coverage though.

Well, crap. I noted Hamilton's groin injury in my snap count article. Herman wasn't the only one with a short memory. [I have always had a bad memory, even as a young student, so it's nothing new for me.]

I wasn't able to find an article mentioning the injury designation in conjunction with Brkic's release. Then again, time constraints gave me about 5 minutes to look for one. I found several just indicating his release, packers dot com doesn't mention an injury designation, and APC wrote that there wasn't one. IDK. Probably was one. EDIT: Aaron Wilson reported that the Packers waived Brkic with an injury designation.

I thought Womack denied the inside to Amari, forcing Amari to run the route deeper (more downfield) with Womack running underneath. I don't think that's the way it was drawn up.

5th rounders usually don't get cut as rookies, and recently Enagbare has started to earn a spot with his actual play. Leaves #4 and #5 OLB spots open (there is a chance they carry 6 and just 4 ILBs). Hamilton and Garvin would be decent bets at this point. They used to like Gileai, and agree Kobe Jones has started to get some traction, though he needs to do it more against number ones and twos. Lotta ball game left....

Galeai's sack came early in the game so I'm assuming against a lineman that makes the 49ers roster but I missed it live and can't find a clip of it so I don't know if he beat his man or it was a miscommunication sack.

I think Enagbare and Garvin make the team, the 5th spot is very much up in air. I'd lean towards Galeai for his ability to drop in coverage but if he misses some time with the shoulder injury someone could easily move in front of him.

Ramsey would appear to be his only competition as a DPR/cover guy and his camp has never really got going as he returns from that really bad injury. Assuming Galeai gets healthy, I think the question will be if they want a player in that role or a guy like Hamilton and shift the duties more to Walker and McDuffie. Similar size types.

Judging from comments from the writers about the rehab players I would've guessed Hill would be the first one to be cleared to practice. Have to think he's close too.

Tom at LG was a little strange. Maybe they like Hanson as backup at C an RG and want Tom to spend time at the other 3 spots? I'd put Tom as the 6th O lineman but I guess it depends on who is being replaced.

Still wish they'd give Rhyan some snaps at RT but that ship has sailed it seems.

I think that they typically carry two back up G types. If (assumption) Hanson is right only at this point and C, perhaps Tom would be left G and the swing T? Runyon has earned a few snaps off anyway.

I thought Rhyan looked decent on Friday. Certainly he was no liability with the seconds. Perhaps he is settling. I’d like to see them let Newman settle back to G too.

I don't remember Hanson playing LG so far but that's not to say he hasn't. Not sure who has played the most snaps at LG on the 2nd team in practices so far? Van Lanen played there in the 2nd half on Friday.

I've read that Tom has played four of the five OL spots in TC, and was wondering if this made it all five. IDK. I remember LT, RT, OC, and I thought it was RG, but my memory is poor.

It says a lot about Jordan Love in a good way if he's a quarterback who doesn't criticize his teammates on the field.

The only explanation I have for Tom at LG is cross training for emergecy situations? It is clear he is a Tackle, not a guard and a better Tackle than Royce Newman. Great feet, he is an athlete, not an anchor guy. Even so, with Jenkins back, that should make Royce Newman the swing guard, not Tom. Kind of peculiar.

{Probably.

Runyan, Myers, Tom, Rhyan, Jenkins, and Nijman are rock solid locks. 6

Hanson and Newman seem like awfully good bets. 8

They probably keep 9, 10, or conceivably 11. Bakh is 9th if he comes off PUP, but that hasn't happened yet, and I have no idea. Leaves Van Laanen, Caleb Jones, and Rasheed Walker battling for one to two or three spots. Rasheed looks destined for a PS spot. OCs Menet, Clary and Schneider look like releases, and unlikely to even get PS invites. Ditto for
OG George Moore. I suspect it comes down to which guy they think can slide to the PS.

Great news to learn that Jenkins is back at practice. If he can be ready by Week 1, that immediately makes our OL better to start the season. Sounds like we will get our first look at Watson as he is off the PUP as well. Hopefully Tonyan back for Week 1 also. No setbacks guys. Thanks, Since '61

It has been a long time since I was this enthusiastic about BOTH Packer lines in the preseason. Powerful lines open up the playbook, control the game flow and create opportunities for the playmakers behind them.

Clark, Reed, Lowry, Wyatt, TJ Slayton, Chris Slayton, Heflin, Ford, Byers. The first 5 have potential to grind O lines to dust. The last 4 just keep making plays in camp to show they too are NFL players.

Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Newman, Jenks, Tom, Hanson, Rhyan, Van Lanen, and additional young talent is a good room! And their best player is hopefully close...but Dave's long delays are troubling.

Coach Butkus and Coach Montgomery must have a blast coaching these men.

Jones graded well on Friday. He’s ascended to be starting with the twos. He looks a better prospect than anticipated. I would not be surprised if he makes the PS. I’d like to see more of him.

Walker is either a disappointment or a guy who needs time after injury whom they planed to bury and put on the PS. His value or lack thereof may well decide what happens to Jones. At this point I’d guess they will PS Van Lanen due to his versatility if Bakh is not back and maybe anyway. How many tackles does one keep?
