Packers Practice Roundup: August 19, 2025

Jordan Love returns and shows he can throw accuarately.

PARTICIPATION:

Returned: DL Lukas Van Ness (back) DL Kenny Clark (back); [Jordan Love and Romeo Doubs returned on Monday. TGR]

DNPs: G Aaron Banks (back) OL Jacob Monk (hamstring) WR Savion Williams (hamstring) RB MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring) DL Barryn Sorrell (knee) S Omar Brown (chest) S Zayne Anderson (knee) S Xavier McKinney (calf) WR Jayden Reed (foot) WR Dontayvion Wicks (calf) CB Nate Hobbs (knee).

PUP: WR Watson, DE Oliver & OL Williams.  Hodkiewicz

Rookie DL Barryn Sorrell’s knee injury is a sprained MCL. He said he does not think he will be out more than a few weeks so perhaps he won’t need an IR-designated to return spot.  Demovsky

Monk, Lloyd, Sorrrell over in the exercise area with the rehab group. X once again working with a trainer but with helmet and doing some backpedaling. Savion with helmet off to the side doing some catching. Don’t see Aaron Banks. As mentioned earlier Kenny & LVN back.  Herman

LaFleur says Omar Brown isn't back yet. He's getting better but they haven't released him yet.  [Brown is still in Indianapolis.  TGR]  Hodkiewicz

In Monday's closed practice, per Bill Huber: "With left guard Aaron Banks out with a back injury but Rasheed Walker back after a groin injury, Jordan Morgan, who had been filling in at left tackle, took the No. 1 reps at left guard. Walker took all the No. 1 reps at left tackle after being worked back in slowly last week.  With Lukas Van Ness out with a back injury, last year’s starter, Kingsley Enagbare, moved in with the No. 1 defense. With Kenny Clark out with a back injury, Karl Brooks and Colby Wooden got some No. 1 reps alongside Devonte Wyatt.  Mostly, the No. 1 secondary consisted of Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine at cornerback, Javon Bullard in the slot, and Evan Williams and Kitan Oladapo at safety. Kalen King, however, got some No. 1 reps in the slot.  Speaking of cornerbacks, the No. 2 unit consisted of Micah Robinson and Bo Melton at cornerback and King in the slot. That was an elevation for Robinson after Kamal Hadden was beaten a handful of times against the Colts."  Huber  [Use this link to read Bill Huber's article on Monday's closed practice. TGR]

PERSONNEL:

Starters today(Tuesday):

LVN - Clark - Wyatt - Gary

Cooper - Quay - McDuffie

Nixon - Valentine Bullard - Williams

Willis Jacobs Kraft - Musgrave

Hardman - Doubs

Walker - Morgan - Jenkins - Rhyan - Tom.  Herman

OFFENSE:

Elgton Jenkins does a great job of finding work and picking up a block to allow Willis time to throw deep downfield to Musgrave for a big gain. 2) Elgersma finds Neyor over the middle for a sliding catch.  3) Doubs with a nice catch on the sideline on a comeback from Willis.   Herman

Jordan Love threw some dimes. Hit Romeo Doubs on go down left side vs Carrington Valentine for about 75-yard TD. Fit tight-window post to Tucker Kraft for about 25 yards over Keisean Nixon. Also had deep stop to Luke Musgrave for about 20. Think he could get use to this no pass rush thing.  2) Jordan Love threw 12 passes in 7v7. He completed 10. Lone incompletion was dropped over middle by Mecole Hardman. Also DPI on Keisean Nixon, arriving early on stop route vs Romeo Doubs.  3) Malik Willis throws a bomb to Matthew Golden, who cooks Keisean Nixon and Evan Williams on a post route for a 53-yard touchdown.  Wood

1x1s:

Doubs beats Valentine on a slant

Fitz wins inside against Oladapo.

Hadden good coverage on Neyor

Heath turns around Melton melton still almost makes the play

Baldwin good coverage on sims.

Hardman beats king

Nixon shuts down Golden

Cornelius Johnson smokes Herring on a go for a long td

Good coverage by Bullard but Kraft catches a short one

Nice catch by Shep

Hicks beats Ballentine bobbles and catches it deep but the bobble cost him as he ends up out of bounds when he catches it.

Bullard good coverage on Kraft deep

Nixon pbu and almost a pick in red zone on golden

Heath beat Hadden inside

Bo locks up Neyor at the line

Bullard pbu on Kraft

King pbu on Hardman.   Herman

Some high pressure one on ones Neyor incomplete with Hadden in coverage Wilson smokes hopper on the route but drops the ball! Cox vs Belton and Belton anchors for the win. That now does it for practice.  Herman

In Monday's practice, per Bill Huber, Love finished the period with four consecutive completions to Doubs, Heath, Emanuel Wilson and John FitzPatrick, with the big tight end sprinting through the middle of the defense for a big gain to end the period.  His second set came in the red zone, with Love completing 7-of-12 passes with three touchdowns and one interception. Two of the touchdowns were to Matthew Golden, with Love showing exquisite touch on both. The first went to Golden in the back corner of the end zone against Evan Williams and Bullard. The second came after a pair of pump-fakes and a flick-of-the-wrist lob over a defender.  2) Rookie linebacker Jamon Johnson might have had his best play of training camp when he had excellent coverage on a downfield pass to rookie receiver Will Sheppard.  Huber

DEFENSE:

Cox all over a bootleg by Clifford. Javon Bullard jumps a pass and almost picks it off. Hes off to a hot start today.  2)  Finally Nixon with a pbu on Doubs to end the steak but McManus aggressively throws a flag for PI (it def wasn’t PI).  3) LVN meets golden in the backfield on an end around in team.  4) Edgerrin Cooper with a likely sack on Willis coming off the edge against Zach Tom. Coop just so damn fast.  5) Kalen king with a fantastic rep in run defense to shoot through the line on a toss and stop Jacobs in the backfield. 6) Arron Mosby with a would be sack against Belton.  Herman

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Brandon McManus is punting. Because when you’re 94% on your kicks since the start of camp, it’s time to find something else to get better at.  {This was at the Monday practice.  TGR]  2)  Brandon McManus makes 3 more: 44L, 46L, 49R. Now 67-of-71 since camp began [ending on Monday]. Much better kicker than punter.  3) Update: Daniel Whelan’s job is very safe.  Wood

Simmons and Melton the first gunners on punt coverage. Hardman and Nixon the primary PRs.  Herman

McNamee is 6-6 today which obviously is why McManus is working as a ref.  2) Not sure what the highlight of training camp was today. Either it was the plays of the day or Keisean Nixon calling Brandon McManus an "old man" and a terrible referee.  Huber [McManus is literally wearing the striped shirt of a referee.  TGR]

MISCELLANEOUS:

Matt LaFleur says QB snaps are "fluid" for Saturday's preseason finale vs. Seahawks, but he's expecting Malik Willis to get a "pretty good run." Expect QB2 to play a lot.  Wood

Matt LaFleur, in his own words, despises 7-on-7. But the Packers are currently doing it to get Jordan Love throws outside routes on air. Also looks like he’s wearing a small plastic bag on his left hand to protect the thumb wrap in the rain (this happened on Monday).  Schneidman

“I do think that I have a high ceiling that if you give me a little bit of runway, I can turn into something.” Coming off a promising preseason game, QB Taylor Elgersma looks back at his journey and what he hopes is ahead.  2) Coach Matt LaFleur said Love would be limited to seven-on-seven work against Seattle on Thursday.Huber

Take a look at this link to a Bill Huber tweet with video of Elgersma completing a pass.  That is a major league fast ball and why the Packers should want to keep control over Elgersma.  TGR

It is “100%” a competition at LT, as LaFleur put it. After missing time with an injury, Walker was back at LT for the full 11-on-11 periods on Monday and not missing a beat. “I feel like I’ve picked up right where I left off.”  "Both those guys have done a nice job," LaFleur said of Walker and Morgan."  Bretl  [I don't know: when Rasheed Walker is healthy, as far as I can recall he gets all of the first team reps at left tackle.  TGR]

It can be hard to know how to analyze the OL and DL until the pads come on. Stackhouse was resetting the line of scrimmage during the initial three padded practices, and he did some good things in the preseason games. Justis Mosqueda noted in the link below that twice he got reached blocked by Colts OC Tanor Bortolini (a good young center but he isn't elite yet either). Both Brinson and Stackhouse have flashed on occasion but neither set the practice on fire. Well, that is to be expected of a 6th round pick and a UDFA. If you predict the 53 with who will make it through waivers and onto the PS, the only guys who look risky to me are Ballentine, Welch, Jamon Johnson, Oliver (but he will go on IR instead), Isaiah Simmons and Hardman. Simmons and Hardman are vested vets, so...

It’s not often a rookie NT sets the world on fire. Those that do it’s normally lighter penetration types making splash plays. Brinson has shown some ability to penetrate and disrupt, which is really his game, but his run game needs some work if it’s to be a primary responsibility. It wasn’t in college.

If you look at the PFF stats for Saturday, Stackhouse took some lumps against starters, but he was out 3rd highest graded DL (60, average). That’s not actually a bad starting point in my view.

Brooks was stellar over only 8 snaps against the starters , penetrating and against the run. Really good to see that cameo and PFF agreed. Enagbare was very good at everything while not really threatening. Both Wooden and Brinson less so, particularly against the run. Keith Randolph, now waived injured, was actually the 4th highest rated DL. Unfortunate for him as he might have won a PS spot otherwise.

Hardman is, for me, still likely to get a roster spot despite not being deserving as a WR (we don’t need a third small shifty slot behind Reed and Golden either). However, if the punt return alternative is Reed backed by Nixon, the net benefit may still be high enough in terms of reliability and injury risk. There seems to be no other alternative bar a waiver wire gamble.

Neither Simmons nor Hardman cost much really. I think the vested fact is therefore over emphasized. If we keep Hardman it’s for his return competence. Simmons may be taking snaps from the much better (this preseason) Hopper and also from Welch. Welch is as good on STs. I don’t see Simmons making it as things stand for that reason.

Jamon Johnson was good on Saturday. Very good versus the run. His coverage has been coming on through camp. Another good game on Saturday might insert him into that conversation. At the very least I think that he could be as physical as McDuffie and more competent in coverage now and better next year. I doubt that is enough at this point, but if they do think that he may be claimed, it might be tough to let him go.

Looking at the CBs, I am leaning towards them keeping 6. Behind Melton I think Robinson on the perimeter and then a slot capable type. King might just be doing enough to squeeze into the last spot. They obviously want a CB slot option situationally . Melton, Valentine and Robinson don’t offer that really. Obviously they could opt to try to get one to the PS and elevate initially.

"It’s not often a rookie NT sets the world on fire."

I think it was Vic Ketchman who used to say that good NTs aren't drafted, they're grown.

However, Raji was drafted as an instant NT force but grew out of the desire to play it.

Raji only started one game in 2009 as a rookie (the 9th pick in the draft) . He played pretty well it’s true, but in rotation, and did get one sack and defend a pass, but it was 2010 when he took off. Actually, 2010 was arguably his career apex.

Good to hear that the Sorrell injury is only an MCL.

Kind of a shame for Jordan Love to be stuck doing 7-on-7s this late in the preseason. I hope it doesn't give him false confidence. When the season starts, it will be a month since he faced any kind of pass rush--even a practice pass rush.

The two reclamation projects--Hardman and Simmons--both started with a bang (although I never believed it in Simmons' case) but have been trending downward for awhile now. I'm leaning toward cutting both of them.

Meanwhile, Matthew Golden continues to be easily the most impressive player in training camp. It's almost become routine. The games need to start for him.

Both high draft picks, Simmons and Hardman, are high on RAS, low football production. Hoped for more, but neither are special talents on the football field.

Hardman may be worth a PS spot.

I don't believe Simmons should get one. Nags said it all with his pithy comment: "Take a drink every time Simmons looks lost on the football field. If you dare!"

As Camp progresses toward Lions week, a consistent report has been Love's passing..."completed another pass through a tight window...dropped a dime...beautiful deep ball on the hands...10 for 12 in passing."

Even with the big dogs Reed and Wicks and Watson (he's gonna be back sooner than expected...kid is a dedicated, incredibly hard worker) on the sidelines...with Golden, Doubs, Kraft, Musgrave and even Hicks & Johnson...the Air Force is going to deploy some potent jet fighters for Love.

Ongoing injuries to starters continues to concern. They have to have significant practice time together before the lions arrive...especially the OL.
