Packers Practice Roundup, August 22, 2024
A very good practice for the Packers against the Baltimore Ravens.

INJURIES:
The Green Bay Packers signed Madison native Keonte Schad in time for Thursday’s joint practice against the Baltimore Ravens. Schad is a defensive tackle from Oregon State. Huber
Waege (concussion) and Dillon (stinger) were out. I assume Cooper remained out. I saw no tweets about new injuries. TGR
PERSONNEL:
Zayne Anderson and Bo Melton both on first team kickoff unit. Herman
OFFENSE:
Nothing doing for Packers offense on first two plays. Run nowhere for Jacobs followed by diving PBU by ravens defender on a flat. Next play is a checkdown to Jacobs for nothing but a defensive holding penalty downfield would have given Gb a first down. Run inside with Wilson for about 4. Now, Sean Clifford the number 2 QB. First play is a screen to DuBose for a few. Run with Merriweather looks disjointed and goes nowhere. Clifford massively underthrows a ball for Melton who adjusts as best he could and makes a diving attempt but can’t hang on. Herman
Notes from first 11-on-11 period between GB D and BAL O: • Bullard, Williams both repping alongside McKinney • Jackson to Flowers nice gain up right sideline with Nixon in coverage • Jackson deep left to Bateman incomplete. Stokes there but McKinney seemed to force INC • Ravens false starts in 1s and 2s, Packers offsides once in 2s • Enagbare pressure, Cox sack in 2s. 2) Ravens have four false starts in first two team periods. Packers DL has been getting steady pressure. More plays: • Gary coverage sack on Lamar • McKinney PBU over middle after multiple guys get pressure • Jackson nice completions to Wallace (Stokes trailing) and Miller (Ballentine good coverage but better catch over middle) • Kalen King, Eric Wilson good coverage deep downfield on INCs. 3) Packers defensive line is feasting in red-zone period right now. Lamar is running for his life out here and not by design. 4) Lamar had two TD passes during lengthy RZ period to Kolar and Flowers. Nixon also committed DPI in end zone face guarding Tez Walker. Other than those, constant pressure/sacks in the backfield. {I am not sure how many chances Baltimore got - quite a few. TGR] 5) Move the ball period ends with Lamar throwing a deep TD to Malik Cunningham with LB Isaiah McDuffie in coverage. Beautiful throw. [McDuffie had good coverage and got good depth and then ran with Cunningham, a fourth string WR, who is fast. The pass was actually right in front of where I was sitting - it was 2 yards beyond the endline out of bounds. Nice coverage. TGR] 6) Anders Carlson 35-yarder ties it after 1s two-minute drill. Love hit Doubs for 42 yards deep down the middle with Stephens in coverage. Screen to Jacobs for loss of four pushed them back and two fades to Wicks were INC. Washington had a great PBU on third down in back right corner against Wicks, who took a shot on the play after a great throw from Love. [Love threw another "hospital ball to Heath later, but he got up after a few moments. TGR] 7) Greg Joseph good from 51 to tie it at end of backups two minute. Michael Pratt was QB, not Sean Clifford. Completions to DuBose, Sims and Toure got Packers into FG range. 8) Perfect throw from Clifford to Pearson for big gain down right side in 3s two minute. Carlson 51-yarder ties it. Packers have tied score in each of offense’s three two-minute drills. Schneidman
A long red zone period and a good red zone period for Packers defense. I counted 15 plays. Ravens scored 2 TDs, Nixon flagged for PI, but overall good pressure from front, particularly Clark. Coverage in secondary contributed to some of the pressures/“sacks.” 2) Clifford also got offense in FG range (down 3 from own 30 yard line in 2-minute drill) by throwing 2 completions to Swinton, a 25(ish) yard completion to Pearson. Completion to Stanley. Carlson good from 51 yards. 3) Same situation for Pratt (down 3 in a 2 minute drill): Completion to DuBose on out sparked drive. Also connected with Sims over middle and Toure on slant. Joseph good from 51 yards. Bretl
Love to Kraft for a nice gain. Run to Jacobs off right side goes nowhere. Run to Wilson off left side goes nowhere. Run off left to Wilson goes much better. Gain of 8-10. 2) Drop by Emanuel Wilson on a checkdown from Clifford. Pass catching and pass pro are the two keys for him. Herman
Roquan Smith with the first pick of Love. Threw it right to him trying to go for Reed over the middle. Next play, Doubs drops one on an open deep post. Demovsky
Heath roasts Nate Wiggins for 40-plus on a third-and- 8 bomb from Clifford. 2) Love throws four passes from inside of 10. Four touchdowns. 3) Pratt adds two more TDs to cap a good deep red-zone period. Huber
QB Jordan Love completed 18-30 passes for 216 yards, 4 red zone TDs and one INT vs. great Ravens defense. Concerns of Love’s demise after Denver were greatly premature. Wood
Colby wooden with two impressive wins in 1x1s vs Ravens OL. 2) Ravens defense making a lot of plays. 2 PBU’s and a pick earlier, just had two more pbu’s on the last two plays - one on Love, one on Pratt. Pratt complete to Heath on a slant for about 6. Clifford gets defense to jump but oddly doesn’t take the shot down field and takes a checkdown to Merriweather instead that goes nowhere. 3) Jayden Reed for a few on an end around in team red zone drills. Love hits Kraft on a rollout and Kraft makes a nice move to get some extra yards. 85 is looking really good these last few practices. Love to Doubs on a nice out route down to about the 4. A Jacobs run right ends up in Jacobs being tackled and some Packers not happy about it. 4) Pratt makes a nice read to hit Merriweather in the flat in red zone and he takes it the rest of the way for the TD. Needed to be a quick decision from 17 and it was. [Even in #3 reps, the process Pratt shows is important. TGR] 5) The screen game is picking up!!! Love to Kraft on a TE screen in red zone for a TD. 6) Doubs with that sick red zone route at the pylon. It’s nearly unstoppable unless you’re Jaire Alexander yesterday. The Ravens however do not have Jaire Alexander and it’s an easy TD. Doubs just ran a different route to the same spot and beat Stephens again. Another touchdown. Then a Josh Jacobs red zone run goes nowhere. 7) Love to Watson on the sidelines of the end zone for a jump ball TD. Offense starting to heat up! 8) Love to Doubs on a play action slant is almost picked by Roquan again. Roquan flat dropped it. 9) Love gets another free play but the pass is broken up down the right sideline. I believe intended for Doubs. Love incomplete on a corner route to Watson. Looked like Watson had a step but Love missed him wide and low. The pass pro has been awesome by the OL. Love to Kraft over the middle. Big gain Kraft is a machine. 10) Same 2-minute situation for the Packers #3’s. Clifford at QB. Clifford complete to Swinson for 7. Out of bounds. Clifford checkdown to Merriweather. First down and out of bounds. Clifford drops in a dime on a deep corner route to Pearson. gorgeous throw. Clifford throw away looks like they are calling it a sack. Crosser to Stanley for a few. Carlson on for a long kick. Made it! (51-yards). Herman
DEFENSE:
Justin Tucker 62-yarder is short to give Packers starting defense the win in two minute. Wyatt sack on first play before Ravens dinked and dunked downfield to get into FG range. 2) (Then in 2-minute) Evan Williams picks off Josh Johnson over the middle to win two minute for the backups. Rookie safety has five INTs in camp. Packers flood the field and celebrate. 3) We just watched six two-minute drills: Packers O 1s: Carlson 35-yarder to tie; Packers O 2s: Joseph 51-yarder to tie; Packers O 3s: Carlson 51-yarder to tie; Packers D 1s: Tucker misses 62-yarder to tie; Packers D 2s: Evan Williams INT; Packers D 3: Force turnover on downs. [So, perfect on offense and perfect on defense. TGR] Schneidman
Some really good reps in 1-on-1s for TJ Slaton, including a spin move. 2) McKinney in on several plays. Tackle in run game at LOS. Makes tackle in flat on pass. PBU over the middle. Bullard starting next to him but Williams getting work too. 3) Packers pass rush really started to pick up as team period went on. A nice day for Slaton. Van Ness, Smith, Enagabre, Gary all creating push. 4) Bretl
Roger Rosengarten with an impressive 1x1 vs Rashan Gary. Stonewalled him. Don’t see that from a rookie against Gary often. Herman
Stokes breaks up a Jackson deep ball for Bateman. 2)
TJ Slaton has been outstanding so far. Collapses pocket with Gary coming off edge. Likely sack, still an incompletion across middle. 2) Devonte Wyatt meets justice hill in the backfield. 3) Good coverage and Preston penetrates for a likely sack of Jackson in red zone. [Definitely a coverage sack. TGR] 3) Never a wasted step with McKinney. Always where he needs to be with one ear turned to the ball. Hodkiewicz
Same drill (2-minute drill) for the Ravens offense. Kenny Clark starts with a sack. Timeout Ravens. Lamar fires in a completion to Lively. Bullard closed quick but lively made the catch. Clock ticks. Lamar complete to the sidelines out of bounds. 4th down. Lamar finds a checkdown for a first down. Lamar to Justice Hill again on a checkdown. Clock ticks. Lamar to Bateman on a crosser. Lots of time coming off. First down. Spike. Down to 10 seconds left. No timeouts. Great coverage and pressure by the DL. Lamar has to throw it away. 3 seconds left. Justin Tucker on for a massive kick. I think 60 plus but either way a big one. Missed it though. Packers defense wins. 2) NUMBER TWOS 2-minute drill: Same situation for Ravens #2’s. Josh Johnson hits his receiver on a crosser for 5. Out of bounds. Mosby sack but looks like there was a penalty on the Packers. First down ravens. Short completion for Johnson. Evan Williams with the pick of Johnson over the middle for the win!!! [Mosby makes plays in every practice - TGR] Herman
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Carlson hits his 51-yard fg to tie the game in red zone period. Today:
Carlson 5/5
Joseph 3/4
Camp totals:
Anders Carlson: 59/72 - 81.9%
Greg Joseph: 57/73 - 78.1%
Alex Hale: 14/21 - 66.7%
Herman
Kristian Welch, Zayne Anderson, Robert Rochell, Ben Sims, Corey Ballentine and Grant DuBose on first team kick return. Some fringe roster guys. Herman
MISCELLANEOUS:
The #Commanders are trading WR Jahan Dotson and a 5th-rounder to the #Eagles for a 3rd-round pick and multiple 7th-rounders, per @AdamSchefter. A fresh start for Dotson and he stays in the NFC East. Meirov
LaFleur says Rasheed Walker is really starting to pick up on the detail, helping him grow at the LT position. LaFleur adds that he has a high ceiling. [Haven't seen many tweets about LVN, Preston or Enagbare, so iut woulld seem Rasheed Walker is doing well. TGR] Bretl

Good to see them right the ship after the shaky performances in Denver. Maybe this will calm down some of the fans too. The reaction to the scrimmage and preseason game in Denver was a bit over the top at times.
It's especially good to read about a solid outing from the backup QBs and the kickers. And John Harbaugh complimented the Packers defense after the scrimmage.

Sounds like a fun practice to have watched live! Great coverage.
Interesting to see Pearson turning up already and on long passing plays. I had not really associated him with that. Is he in fact more of a weapon than Davis? . I didn’t see anything on his blocking, maybe Sunday.
Wilson doesn’t drop many. Seems like he did the most on a hard day’s sledding for the RBs. Good pass blocking and poor run blocking? Did you happen to see who was at both T positions?
Clifford sounds like he had a much better day. It’s intriguing to hear some not-heard-names like Swinson. Catching not blocking too. Wonder if he could make the PS.
Looking at that list of the kick return team, it’s going to be very tight at the back end. Could they all make it? I believe Dubose and Ballentine will, I think Rochell and Welch should, but that will mean a guy like King to the PS. Anderson has had a good camp. Can he actually play D? Could he nudge out AJj? If not, who?
Great work TGR

“Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, T.J. Slaton and Devonte Wyatt all had their moments, which the defenders in the back end appreciated against a QB like Jackson.”… don’t see LVN’s name?… how did he do??

Don't get me started on LVN. The answer is he hustled, stayed in his gap, got some pressure when someone else flushed the opposing qb, but not much else.
I wrote the article at Andruzi's and now I am at green bay distillery with Andy Herman and a group of people.

Andy Herman is down on LVN too. He says that LVN just bullrushes and has not developed any pass rushing moves. He does well against second stringers but is easily stymied by starting caliber blockers. LVN had a pretty good rookie season. Do you think he's regressed?

What I hear is that he’s just not progressed. He has seemingly not expanded his repertoire of moves, at least he’s not displaying any in practice or games, just relying on raw athleticism. My guess is that the penny hasn’t dropped for him yet that he needs to think and work on stratagems.

as they say, that's called hearsay. people get far too worked up in preseason. the sky is not falling. the sun will rise in the morning. LVN will be fine.
also too, Andy Herman is a putz.

"LVN hustled, stayed in his gap, got some pressure when someone else flushed the opposing qb,"
Sounds like a football player? Thanks for this article, this is significantly more important to me than the preseason game.

I'd be willing to get you started on LVN. What's the complaint? As a rookie, he had limited snaps and still had 8 tackles for loss, 1 behind team leader Kenny Clark.. He had more solo tackles than Gary or Clark. He was one of our better players at getting sacks and hits in on the QB......all in a very limited role.
So Where's The Beef? He should be MORE exceptional?
I think our pass rush is going to be a dominant fact of life in the division. There's too many good players who can beat their man too often and we can just keep throwing fresh dogs against people. How'd you like to be an interior lineman going up against a steady diet of Clark, Slaton, Wyatt. and Brooks?. Or a tackle playing against Gary, Smith. Van Ness, Enagbare? You're just not going to keep all of these guys blocked all of the time. QBs are going to have to get rid of it or eat it.

Lawrence Taylor he should be - (small green character with a light saber)

You also have to ask: what do the coaches have these guys working on but are not willing to put on film? I don't believe for a second that they're not working on LVN's pass rush repertoire.

So the coaches might be telling him not to use all of the pass rush moves that he's been working on? I guess it's possible, but I've never heard of that. Seems like they would want him to use all of his moves so he can hone his skills.

LVN was as advertised last year coming from Iowa...mostly just a bull rusher with great strength and pursuit speed.
Seems he still is. I don't know how you perfect a few new moves without practicing them in game situations.
Bull rushers like him can succeed against lesser college players. Different deal in the NFL. A steady diet from a bull rusher is easily stopped by NFL O lineman.
He's still a talented project but he's not replacing Preston anytime soon, barring an injury to the wily vet.

Always solid against the run.

Every good pass rusher has their own style, it's up to them to find what moves and combo of moves works for them. Sure the coach can give them pointers on footwork and hand fighting but if their not working on their job in the off-season they probably won't ever see the big bucks.

Sounds like Tucker Kraft had a big day yesterday, hopefully he's full go in a couple weeks.

That is why I used Kraft's picture at the top of the article. Lots of Kraft in the tweets lately, no Musgrave. I am not worried about Musgrave, mind. My view is that if Musgrave and Kraft can stay healthy, they will get almost all of the snaps, except for (IDK) 10 to 15 snaps for a blocking TE. I thought (and I still think) that would be Tyler Davis, though his inability to block anything the other day was weird since he had thrown some great blocks in practice. Never know - maybe he is a practice guy and not a game-day guy. I don't think Davis was available against the Ravens for the scrimmage.
