Packers Practice Roundup: Day 6. July 31, 2019

Packers Practice Roundup: Day 6.  July 31, 2019.

Injuries, Usage, Formations, Personnel:

  • Newly out: Aaron Jones (hamstring tightness), Javien Hamilton (hamstring). Returned: Darnell Savage, Still out; Mason Crosby, Jamaal Williams, Josh Jackson, Kendall Donnerson, Greg Roberts, Jason Spriggs, Fadol Brown.  Demovsky
  • Mason Crosby (calf) Jamaal Williams (hamstring) Aaron Jones (hamstring tightness) Josh Jackson (foot) Javien Hamilton (hamstring) Kendall Donnerson (hamstring) Greg Roberts (PUP) Jason Spriggs (trapezius) Fadol Brown (calf) Darnell Savage Jr (teeth) returned.  Wood
  • Savage got initial first team reps, during walkthrough.  Savage with the 1s right away.  Savage is in pads.  Greene getting those reps during the first competitive period. Easing the rookie in.  Nagler
  • Aaron Jones is out today with hamstring tightness. A hamstring injury wiped out much of his camp last year. Jamaal Williams also out with a hamstring injury.  Nagler
  • Dexter Williams getting first team reps with both Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones sidelined.  Nagler
  • Matt LaFleur said he told Josh Jones to "get out" after he hit RB Tra Carson and they scuffled. "That's not what we want to be about," LaFleur said.  Demovsky
  • Much being made about LaFleur benching Josh Jones, but not enough being made of why Jones hit Carson as hard as he did. He was reacting to the hit on Brown and had his teammates back. I can't kill him for that.   Nagler
  • First scuffle of camp starts between RB Tra Carson, who tried to run over S Josh Jones, who didn't like it.  Demovsky
  • RB Tra Carson waved off the tackle/back-and-forth with Josh Jones in practice with a smile: “It’s one of those things. Everybody’s just competing. No hard feelings for nobody. You know how it is. It’s just competing in practice. That’s all it is.”  Jones had tackled Dexter Williams earlier in camp - the safety is bringing an edge. Owczarski
  • LaFleur said there’s a “zero tolerance policy” against fighting. LaFleur on pulling Jones: “I told him to get out at that particular moment.” Didn’t return.  Not the first time Jones has played past the whistle since he’s been with the Packers.  He did same thing with Jimmy Graham last year in camp.  Wood

Quarterbacks and WRs:

  •  Rodgers hits MVS deep for a TD in 2 min drill. Alexander had good coverage, just a great adjustment MVS. Been waiting on one of those.  Nagler
  • Shepherd led all qualifying WRs in the draft class in yards per route run from the slot last year, per PFF.  He can play.  Kruse
  • Rodgers sends D Williams out wide right for a five wide look. Hits Jimmy Graham on a quick out to beat the blitz.  Nagler
  • Ficken good from 48 to end No 3 two minute. Boyle hit Moore twice early in the series.  Hodkiewicz
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling caps the 2-minute drive with a 33-yard TD catch but sure looked like he used a swim move to cast aside Jaire Alexander. Would've been a possible case to challenge for sure.  Demovsky
  • Kizer hits Moore on cross.  Hodkiewicz
  • Fantastic jump ball catch from Geronimo on a rainbow from AR.  Nagler
  • Darrius Shepherd is shifty. Won with an outside in route and now cuts to catch another RZ TD after being lined up against Alexander.  Hodkiewicz
  • Nice job staying alive for his QB by EQ.  Nagler

Tight Ends:

  • LaFleur on TE Big Bob Tonyan: He gets better each and every day. Not only in the pass game but the run game. He's a valuable piece. Excited to see him in the preseason.  Kruse
  • Rodgers sends Vitale out wide left. Another spread look. This time hits Graham up the seam for a first down.  Nagler

Running Backs:

  • Nice job by D Williams working back across formation to pick up a blitz. Nagler
  • First play in the last competitive period is...a fullback screen to Vitale. Kid is everywhere. Nagler

Defensive Backs:

  • Ka’Dar Hollman continues to impress. Keeps showing signs of being a really good man corner.  Nagler
  • Rookie Ka’dar Hollman was the one charged with Davante Adams [catch].  Owczarski
  • LaFleur on rookie CB Ka'dar Hollman: Ka'dar's done a nice job. He challenges our WRs every day. He's not afraid to get up there and bump 'em. I'm excited about him.  Kruse [Lots of observers impressed with Hollman’s press man coverage.]

Safety:

  • Tra Carson and Josh Jones get into it after a physical run. Carson knocked Tony Brown on his ass and wasn’t taking anything from Jones.  Nagler [Recall that Josh Jones had the first tackle in camp and added a stare down after hitting the offensive player.]

Linebackers:

  • offense tries to get MVS deep but secondary is all over it. No outlet for Rodgers because of good coverage in the flat by Burks.  Nagler
  • Ty Summers just obliterated Dexter Williams in a pass pro drill. Mercy.  Nagler

Kicker/STs:

  • backup two-minute drill ended with Sam Ficken’s 48-yard field goal.  Wood
  • Concluded with Sam Ficken making a 48-yard field goal after Tim Boyle’s group got within scoring distance.  Owczarski

Offensive/Defensive Line:

  • Montravious Adams has generated a lot of headlines lately, but he still ends up on the ground way too much so far early in camp.  Nagler
  • rotated Justin McCray and Lucas Patrick as first-team center, just to spell Corey Linsley. Today, it’s Patrick.  Wood
  • Elgton Jenkins again at center with No 2s.  Hodkiewicz
  • OLB ZaDarius Smith continues to dominate in 1 on 1 pass rush drills. Won all three of his rushes.  Silverstein
  • Cole Madison continues to impress in 1 on 1s.  Nagler
  • Daily Za’Darius Smith and Rashan Gary one on one tweet. Kenny Clark and, Elgton Jenkins had nice reps as well.  Hodkiewicz

Overall/Miscellaneous:

  • Raven Greene comes free on a blitz and would have lit Rodgers up if he didn’t have a red jersey. This after a play that saw three defenders collapse in on Rodgers. Defense taking it to the offense again.  Nagler
  • Mike Daniels' one-year contract with the Lions is in and it actually totals $8.1 million. The base salary of $7.8 million is guaranteed and there's a roster bonus worth up to $300,000 ($18,750 per game active). It has another $1 million in incentives. Demovsky
  • Flags nearly every play. Sloppy as hell. Again.  Nagler
  • I cannot say enough about how impressed I am with how Matt LaFleur has run the Packers so far. It’s so insanely early and no adversity has truly hit yet but he’s been laid back while also firm - a very tough line to balance. I love what he’s building with this franchise.  Herman
  • Claimed off of waivers today: Steelers: WR Brandon Reilly (via Lions) Packers: DE Markus Jones (via Ravens) Buccaneers: William Poehls (via Colts)  Field Yates

It's nice to hear about some of the individuals, but this is another sloppy practice, apparently. Of course, we are missing 6 of our gameday 45. But still, we need to tighten that up. We're gonna have an opponent real soon.

Nice to see mentions again for Madison. Shepherd starting to get love: can he return punts? Moore showing up again but Kizer had some bad misses deep today. Nagler noting that Adams isn’t winning enough one-in-ones, but no details. Good to see Dexter showing up on protection: that will help his cause. Still no mention of Vitale actually running with the ball. Summers showing up against the run

Hollman and also Tonyan getting praise (latter omitted here). Looks like they are pushing hard. Greene also.

I read pretty much all Packers sites for training camp updates and I haven't heard Preston Smith's name once anywhere. Also, Very little about Amos, Lancaster (except beat twice), T Williams and Graham.

I guess in some of those cases, no news could be good news?

Possibly, Graham has been making plays but that’s expected. Tonyan’s role has grown so we hear. We haven’t heard to much about rushing from a standard position generally. It’s the players behind the established ones that I think are the focus perhaps?

@GBPDAN:
Amos: couple of tweets early, showing nice coverage and he showed nice recovery speed on a deep pass. Ross and Andy in their podcast said something to the effect that Amos is exactly as advertised: always where he is supposed to be, broke up a couple of passes but didn't intercept them. Just solid.

Graham: A number of tweets about catches he has made. Two or three tweets about Graham missing blocks.

Preston: Vaguely remember one tweet mentioning him, and can't remember if it was positive, negative or neutral.

Practically nothing about Tramon and Lancaster (except beat twice).

I think thats why bears fans thought amos leaving wasnt a big deal. He does his job and doesn't get talked about.

I think Amos, who will play a lot more SS than true FS (Savage), will show more in scrimmages and games than he will in practices.

The three guys I'm really interested in watching this camp are Cole Madison, Kevin King, and Rashan Gary.

Tried to tell a lot of people last year it is waaay to early to give up on an athlete like Moore after his rookie year. I think in a couple years fans will look back and ask themselves "did we really want J'Mon Moore cut after his rookie season?"

When they drafted him, I thought he was an ideal 'big slot' to take over when Cobb left. He hasn't had to catch any passes that count, yet, but it's encouraging. He's going to have to claw his way back up the depth chart, but depth and competition at a position filled with young players is a very good thing.

Daniels move may come back to bite. Now, teams can double Clark. It’s going to impact his effectiveness unless Adams is going to be a true threat, which I doubt.

I don't think Adams will be on the field a lot on obvious passing downs. It sounds like Gary and Z. Smith will eat up a lot of DE/DT snaps in those situations.

Jones will win a place on the roster or not, and it's hard to earn a spot when they won't let you practice. Message sent. To all.

From reading as many accounts of the incident as I can find, it seems that it wasn't the fighting as much as the tackling. It was a no-tackle practice. Period. LaFleur wants a healthy team, not one that has beaten each other up for a couple of weeks. Perfectly reasonable, IMO.

We cut our starting safety, Whitehead, last year after some after-the-whistle stuff that hurt the team. Jones needs to save those big hits for the exhibition games and quit hurting the team or we just have to cut him.

Personally, I have no problem with Josh Jones getting in Tra’s grill after he clocked a defense-mate. I’d rather see aggressiveness than apathy.

In fact, I like that Carson ran over Tony Brown too. He’s a big physical back and he’s trying to make the roster.

I want ILB’s to be bad asses. You need that.

I guess Matt LaFleur wants to protect his poor little offensive darlings from those mean, mean defenders.

I think he's laying the ground rules and expectations. The circumstances of the Carson play were different from this late pop by Jones. This first camp will define who he is and his relationship with his team going forward. It's easy to find those places where you can back off over time and still get the results you need, but difficult to become more disciplined.

I chose to use Ka'Dar Hollman's photo for this article. It was a close call. Jmon had three mentions and Z Smith had a couple. And of course Josh Jones produced the most buzz, but the photo is intended to show the player who shined the most in practice.

Very encouraged by the early returns on this Hollman "kid". His story makes him easy to root for, and it's great to have fast, playable depth at CB. Hopefully he can keep it up in his game reps.

Adams getting put on his ass is just flat out sad.. especially repeatedly. Doesn't inspire confidence. But it's still early, and if he does happen to fall flat early this season.. we can still look at KeKe, Brown and maybe even Lancaster. Been seeing Hollmans' name since he's gotten to GB which is a huge plus if we have something there. If Jackson can crack the top 3, Hollman and Williams as #4-5 is incredible. Cole Madison is trying to make Gute look like a genius from what i can see. There's still a lot of positive in the "sloppy" play.. I'm patient

I don't understand how Jones and Williams can already be nursing hamstring injuries.

I'm all for caution in training camp, but it's just dissapointing that there's already recurring injury concerns.

Poor hydration and not doing a proper warm ups. I mean if you don’t take stretching serious it will bite you. I agree it is frustrating and there needs to be medical/ training accountability and players accountability.

The intensity and swagger of the defense shows. I don’t think camp fights are useful. That being said the roster has been turned over for a reason. I like that MLF booted Jones but should have sent Tra Carson also. they need to clean up this sloppiness. It can come from guys heads swimming with to much information. The next 3 weeks is going to give people a look at the way MLF is going to prepare on a weekly basis.

I think too many people are reading into things that are a normal first week of camp. New coach or not- it takes time to get the rhythm down and it’s always an on going project. Patience while it molds itself into the Green Bay Packers. As they say,” Rome wasn’t built in a day. “

Way to early in camp, the report from Herman on LaFleur is what I’m most interested in. He states “ he been laid back but also firm”. Have to have a good head coach to win in this league. The rest will fall into place.

TGR nice recap again as usual. I didn’t like reading that Jones is injured again even if it is slightly. I hope that he can recover quickly.

In the meantime it means extra reps for Derrick Williams and that can only help the rookie RB.

I’m assuming that no news is good news concerning Turner and Bulaga on the OL. Thanks, Since ‘61

Josh Jones sticking up for Brown reaffirms he going all in for the team after his petulance in the offseason when he immaturely demanded a trade.

I like his change of heart and I like Pettine giving him most of his reps at ILB vs SS. His coverage has always been suspect but he can tackle, as Carson will attest.

Josh Jones seems like a head case that will only continue to cause problems. Missed assignments. Foolish mistakes. He will be cut.

I think Pettine will put more of a premium on those who are assignment sure, those he can count on. Josh Jones is not looking like he fits that bill, at all.

On a different note, Elgton Jenkins getting more time at C with the 2s seems to imply to me that the starting 5 OL are set: Bakhtiari, Taylor, Linsley, Turner, Bulaga.

Wondering if Jenkins' long-term future with the team is as Linsley's replacement rather than at OG.
