Packers Practice Roundup: Day Four

Day four of training camp saw more action even though the players were not in pads.

GENERAL/PERSONNEL:

Packers have put Simon Stepaniak on the reserve/retired list. Nagler

Packers reported three tryouts and one visit. Tryout: DL Josh Avery (SE Missori), RB Jon Hilliman (Rutgers), DL Trevon McSwain (Duke) Visit: RB Pete Guerriero (Monmouth).  Kruse

Here's Matt LaFleur's schedule for the Packers the next few days: Today: Practice (no pads). Sunday: Players off Monday: Practice (no pads). Tuesday: Practice (shoulder pads).  Demovsky

Packer’s Players who are out:  G Simon Stepaniak, WR Bailey Gaither. Back today: TEs Marcedes Lewis and Isaac Nauta, S Henry Black (from NFI) and WR Chris Blair.  Check that. Bailey Gaither is here.  Silverstein

Here’s the injury rundown for those on PUP or NFI: Za’Darius Smith: back Kevin King: hamstring Will Redmond: foot Kingsley Keke: ankle Dominique Dafney: knee Patrick Taylor: knee Isaiah McDuffie: hamstring.  Demovsky

With Aaron Rodgers' revised contract, the #Packers are so far over the salary cap for 2022 that they'll have to move heaven and earth (and perhaps Rodgers) to get in compliance.  Huber [Yes, I thought this was clever.]

And practice No 4 is over at 11:58. Players off tomorrow and back Monday. Pads go on Tuesday.  Hodkiewicz [So, practice was one hours and 48 minutes.]

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

Love finds Gaither on a crosser for a nice gain.  Herman

Jordan Love almost got the defense to jump with the hard count. Ends up completing one to Sternberger in the right flat. Nice use of cadence from the young QB. Nagler

Bronson Kaufusi with a drop along the sideline. Transition to tight end is coming along slowly.  Herman

Great job by Jordan Love of somehow finding Randall Cobb while the pocket was absolutely collapsing all around him. Off platform throw was on target.  Herman

Simultaneous huge plays by the offense. Benkert deep to Bailey Gaither for a TD on one side. Rodgers deep to Adams for a TD on the other. Stokes beat easy by Adams. Herman

Jordan Love checks into a strong side run to Dexter. Was the right call and Williams picks up nice yardage. Nice read by the 2nd year QB.  Herman

Davante getting after WR Chris Blair for not finishing a drill at full speed. The standard is the standard.  Herman

Mama there goes that man. Winfree comes back to an underthrown ball from Love but still finds a way to make the catch. Ka’Dar in coverage.  Herman

Lazard finds a big hole in the coverage and Rodgers doesn’t miss him. Big gain from 12 to 13.  Herman

What can a really good season in the NFL do for your confidence? Everything. Robert Tonyan is playing with supreme confidence right now and catching everything. Just had a nice finger tip catch in drills but it’s been the same in teams. Another jump for 85 is very possible!  Herman

RUNNING BACKS:

Dexter Williams with another really nice run during the developmental period. Running behind Newman and Nijman.  Herman

Kurt Benkert on the money to Dexter Williams.  Hodkiewicz

Kylin Hill is such a fluid runner. Everything looks easy to him. Quick decision maker too.  Meanwhile a fantastic run by Kylin Hill with a great cut into space. Big gain.  Herman

No question about it, Dexter Williams is running with much better contact balance. Kylin has more raw talent but Williams’ experience will help him. He’s further with becoming a pro at RB.  Herman

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Aaron Jones starts another team session with a huge run off left tackle. Runyan and Jenkins leading the way. Would have been one on one with Amos in the open field.  Herman

Runyan getting some run at center with the 2s.  Huber

File this under interesting: Jon Runyan Jr getting snaps at center. Less ideal - just sailed a snap over Love’s head.  Herman

It is incredible how comfortable Josh Myers looks at center making checks and calls at the line. Training camp 4 and he’s absolutely the guy at center. Impressive start.  Herman

Ben Braden getting another look at left guard today with the starters. Steno said this offseason they’d be giving him a chance to compete for a starting job at guard and tackle.  Nagler

Kenny Clark setting the LOS against both Braden and Turner. Filled the gap and gave the RB nowhere to go. Nice play by Clark.  Herman

I haven’t called it out enough but Elgton Jenkins has been phenomenal at LT.  Herman

DEFENSE:

Nice pass rush combo from Lowry and Summers for what would have been a sack on Rodgers.  Nagler

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Carlo Kemp, who had caught my eye a couple times just had a stop at the LOS on Kylin Hill. Two udfa rookies who I have strongly penciled in for the practice squad are Bailey Gaither and Kemp.  Herman

No pads but Lowry has been playing with his hair on fire this week.  Hodkiewicz

TJ Slaton sheds a block and stuffs Dexter Williams at the LOS. Slaton continues his strong start.  Herman

LINEBACKERS:

Tonyan finds some separation from Barnes but Rodgers is just a bit off and it falls incomplete. And even though Mike Pettine is gone you’ll be happy to know Preston Smith was back in coverage on the play.  Herman

Rashan Gary drops into coverage, Rodgers initial read is gone, fires sideline to MVS, Jackson makes a diving attempt at the ball but comes up empty. Big gain down the sideline for [#] 83.  Herman

PBU by Kamal Martin on an in-breaking route intended for Nauta. Ball looked low from Love anyway but nice play by Kamal.  Herman

Krys Barnes showing some quicks as he explodes from ILB to the backfield on an outside toss to stop Dillon for a loss. Best play of camp for Barnes.  Herman

Meanwhile, Tipa with some quick pressure on Jordan Love.  Herman [Again, who did Gileai beat?  It is Love, but could be the #2s.]

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

again dropping Adrian Amos in the box with their 3-safety look. With Henry Black off NFI, he drops back as deep safety with Darnell Savage Jr. It was Vernon Scott deep with Savage when Black was on NFI.  Wood  [Could be just rotating, or could indicate the #1 in this defensive look.]

[Another viewpoint on above]  Henry Black getting reps with the 1s at safety in dime with Amos moving into the box. Would seek Black is ahead of Vernon Scott at this point. Reminder Will Redmond still out injured and it was Redmond in that spot in OTAs and Minicamp.  Herman

Rodgers and Adams torch Stokes on a double move for a long TD.  Huber

Rodgers and Davante hook up deep again down the right seam. Josh Jackson is the victim this time. It’s like they’re just toying with folks.  Nagler

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Crosby 8-8 on FG from 33 to 53. All no doubt.  Huber

I chose to use Dexter Williams' photo. I could have just as easily used Kylin Hill's photo. Benkert, Gaithers, also got two separate favorable mentions.

As a note, there is some confusion on AR's restructure. I am using a cap number of $27.923M, as is Ken Ingalls of Packers Cap. However, OTC has it $850K less, which corresponds to the $850K in incentives he earned last year. To complete the confusion, Field Yates tweeted out on July 30 that AR's cap number is $27.573M, which is $350K less than my figure. Given the Packers' cap situation, $850K does matter more than it would in most years.

Happy to see another Newman mention. Kaufusi's drop doesn't help him, but the question for him is whether he can block like Marcedes. Nauta is the traditional TE, not Kaufusi.

Jaire was held out after yesterday's cramps. King was also still out. Stokes got torched, but it was by Rodgers to Davante. While I'd prefer him to do yeoman work on Adams, I can't get too worked up about it.

Kaufusi is a PS candidate and depth for Lewis. If he can block anywhere near as well, that’s all we need I agree.

I'm thinking this late round draft pick, Kaylin Hill was a good one.

The best part about camp is it's the time of year when the air is filled with optimism.

The page gets turned, and the sins of the past get wiped clean.

At least for a few weeks.

Simple question as I've never followed TC much in the past. Do they actually tackle before pads come on, or is it akin to 2 hand touch? Just wondering as an avoidable injury seems risky.

All the injuries and only an 1.5 hour practice. Maybe more hard life conditioning would help build more well rounded endurance? Less golf, less machines, more rock climbing, more 22 k glacier summits, more trailruns up 16k peaks. I don't know, maybe 3 days of cuttin 30 inch dia oak trees, heaving them and splitting with a maul (my preferred splitting). Follow my typical off season, and maybe they'll be less hamstring pulls. Not sure many of those guys half my age, brawn and all that, would keep up. Not braggin, just jeez. 1.5 hour practice by day 4? Don't they stay in shape anymore and come into camp hitting it hard?

They don't really tackle once the pads come ON!

They barely tackle in the actual games!

The NFL is turning into the NBA with no fouls called.

Player safety has exceeded the integrity of the game. Change the entire design of the helmets to eliminate them as weapons, reduce the size of the facemasks and see the changes that technique would bring - safer for all.

When the pads go on, please highlight the "Hitters".

Packers have put Simon Stepaniak on the reserve/retired list. - TT would never have drafted him. Injuries were his #1 concern.

Hmmm...Gotta disagree with that SH....

Ted drafted Justin Harrell 16th overall after Harrell only played in 3 games his final season at Tennessee. Stepaniak was taken 209th overall so it was worth the flyer in the 6th round.

To make matters worse Harrell was even MORE injured in the NFL... He played in 16 total games for the Packers including missing the entire season in 2009 and playing in just one game in 2010.

UGH! Not a great pick by Ted on that one.

He did stop after Harrell. Never trusted anyone again. Torn Biceps Tendon was the excuse. The back issue came out after the draft. He said camp. Yet Rumor said otherwise.

Yup, you're right about that. Still, I'll never get too upset at a flyer in the 6th on a guy who had a chance to be good if he could recover from a injury.

Gaither keeps making an impact, as does Winfree. If this continues it will get interesting for a bunch of reasons. I had Gaither pegged to be a surprise.

Dexter Williams seems to be getting it. Too late or is there going to be real fire in the RB depth competition?

Once the pads come on, the tests will start in earnest for most of the team, but some early flashes among the skill positions thus far.
First mention of Nijman. Want to see him in pads!

We are both Gaither fans; he has great quick releases and catches everything, but I noticed he is pretty bad at blocking. 🙁

That can be learned fortunately, but it is common among rookie receivers, so not a surprise. Thanks for the insight.

K King where he has been a majority of his career injured unable to go, cut this stiff what were you thinking resigning him? my god second round bust get over it and move on. Better than average defense and you can go far great defense like Tom Brady's teams have had over 20 years and you can win 7 SB. AR really has never had that great defense 2010 they were pretty good. Look at Tampa last season very good aggressive defense. Success

Agree about King but with reports of Stokes getting beat regularly, albeit by Adams, who would you start opposite Jaire?

I wish Newsome had dropped just a few more spots. Not really enthused about Stokes but I thought he should go about 45th, so not unenthused, either. Does that make sense? If not, translate the babble into English.

Rumor has in Kevin King blew out his hamstring sprinting to the table to sign his $5M contract. His agent is either a genius or has incriminating pictures of the FO.

I just don't get it with Kevin King. Why are the Packers bothering with this guy? He had a "back" injury before the NFCCG and his play in that game demonstrated it.. Six months later, signs a one year contract and yet still has "back" issues. If he (King) has 6 months of chronic back pain and can't practice, what makes you think he's not going to be available during the regular season? Why bother?

It is not back issue now, it is hamstring... And KK is not guilty that he was call to play injured. For experience guys there is no problem to miss some unpadded practice. And I believe it is precautionary, to avoid harder injury.

While I get the King hate to some degree, the one year deal is perfect to bring along Stokes slowly. The latter's welcome to the NFL last few days by Rogers and Adams is nothing less than a constant torch to his rookie butt. Hopefully this will lead to growth and not indicative of an overrated speed guy who can't actually play at this level. Time will tell but time is needed and King provides that time.

Yes, King got burned badly by the Bucs....although to be fair the TD at the half is totally on the coaches who had a timeout to burn and not using it was a glaring in-game fail.

Come to think of it, the coaches were out coached in both the prior NFCCG. If we are lucky enough to return this year the coaches need to step it up!

The idea of bringing back King for a year has some merit: I hear Breeland a lot but he’s got some issues too. How much King plays remains to be seen, but this debate is an old one, as are the jokes, more interested in seeing what others do.

I agree…..CB’s are highly paid and the one year deal for King was fair and potentially a bargain for the Packers. I also agree that the play with King getting burned by the speedy Miller was 100% fault on our DC. You don’t play man in that situation most CB’s would’ve been burned if left on an island with one of the fastest player in the NFL.

That said, King has his faults and mostly due to injury history. When healthy he plays above average. When stating that, we must keep in mind that some of his bad playing was due to King playing thru injuries.

Injuries might hit this position and since it is one of the most important positions in a pass happy league we need the depth If we are to make it all the way…..not smart to trust a rookie to perform highly. A smart move by Gutey.

Easing in Stokes is a good idea. Using King to do it is a crappy (edited that down) idea. Stephen Nelson just signed for less and is better. Multiple CBs signed for about $5M all of whom were as good or better and have a better health history.

Just face it: it is a head scratcher.
