Packers Preseason Game 3 Recap | Packers 30 Ravens 7

Green Bay dominates in all three phases.

The Green Bay Packers gave the Lambeau Field faithful something to cheer about in their final preseason game with a 30-7 victory against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Competition Heating Up

Many Packers in the thick of the roster spot competition had their shinning moments in front a crowd of nearly 80,000 people. Both quarterbacks, Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt, played meaningful minutes with head coach Matt Lafluer giving the nod to Clifford to start but consistency switching through out the game. In Clifford's first drive, he guided the Packers down field completing a 13-yard pass to WR Malik Heath. RB Emmunal Wilson set the tone on the first drive with gaining positive yards with the help of the O-Line providing some nice holes.

Anders Carlson kicked a 54-yard field goal as the crowd roared in applause at the 3-0 score. The Packers defense looked sharp as the Ravens were held in check with back-to-back three-and-outs on their first two drives (penalties and a sloppy Ravens offense helps). After Clifford went three-and-out, Lafluer went with Pratt on the 3rd drive of the game. Wilson was sharing carries with RB Ellis Merriweather as the duo finished with a combined 56 yards on 10 carries in the first quarter. Pratt connected with Heath twice on an 11-yard and eight yard gain setting up and Greg Joseph 36-yard field goal giving the Packers a 6-0 lead to start the second quarter.

Now the Real Fun Begins

Green Bay's defense had a chance to for a turnover on downs, but Baltimore converted on a 4th-and-1 pass from QB Josh Johnson. The Packers defense had the Ravens on the ropes again on a 3rd-and-9, but missed coverage caused Ravens WR Tylan Wallace to be wide open for a 48-yard touchdown pass putting the Ravens up 7-6. Green Bay's offense responded with a 65-yard scoring drive setup by a 20-yard run by Wilson. On a 3rd-and-4, Pratt threw an 18-yard dot to WR Bo Milton as he made an impressive grab for the touchdown. Bo looked like he had been putting in some extra Lambeau leap reps this offseason.

DL Aaron Mosby the monster was on full display at Lambeau Field wreaking havoc with a strip-sack that was scooped up by S Anthony Johnson JR. for a defensive touchdown. Mosby stepped up again on the Raven's next drive intercepting QB Devin Leary in Packer's territory. The score remained 20-7 going into halftime.

Before fans could even get back to their seats, the Packers caused another turnover on the Raven's very first play after the half with a fumble recovery from rookie LB Christian Young. This set up the Packers deep in Ravens territory as Clifford started the second half. On a 4th-and-4, Clifford connected with Heath as he leaped up high like a sky scrapper securing the catch for a touchdown. Anders remained extra point perfect as the Packers lead 27-7.

On the Ravens next drive, momma there goes that man again, Kristian Welch got another preseason pick. Lafleur once again switched up QBs giving Pratt the keys to the Packers offense, but on 2nd down a pass intended for the tight end Messiah Swinson was picked off. Packers defense was able to hold up forcing another Baltimore punt. The offensive line continued to make it easy for the run game as Merriweather and rookie RB Nate McCrary were splitting  carries. This set up a successful Greg Joseph 55-yard field goal attempt, one-upping Carlson's 54-yard field goal in the first quarter, to give the Packers a 30-7 lead. The Packers had two RBs with over 50 yards by the end of the third quarter (Merriweather, Wilson).

In Conclusion

With the Packers looking to solidify their backup quarterback, Pratt finished the game with a QBR of 78.5 throwing 80 yards on 8/12 passing with a TD and INT. Clifford finished with a QBR of 77.4 throwing 53 yards on 6/14 passing with a TD. Merriweather ended with 74 yards rushing on 16 carries and McCrary finished with 64 yards rushing on 11 carries. The leading tackler for the Packers was Kristian Welch who had six total along with the INT. Rookie CB Kalen King had a forced fumble and finished with 5 tackles. The kicking competition remained stiff as Joseph finished 2/2 on FGs and 1/1 on XPs while Anders missed one late going 1/2 on FGs and 2/2 on XPs.

With the four starting receiver core not playing (Watson, Doubs, Reed, Wicks) Heath lead the team in receiving with four catches for 39 yards and a TD. Melton finished with one catch for a touchdown, and WR Grant DuBose finished with zero catches and was only targeted once. Mosby had a statement game with the strip-sack to go along with an INT and is a safe bet he will be on the 53-man roster when announcements are made on Tuesday, August 27th.

would have been a near perfect game if anders makes the chip shot field goal.
Who's our kicker?
Bring on Sao Paulo and the eagles.

Maybe they flip as coin on kicker. I agree with many, they will be scanning the wire for kickers and qbs. Possible rb's too? Gonna be fun next week.

I missed the game, but I watched the highlight reel on youtube. I don't think it's a safe bet that Aron Moseby makes the team. Brenton Cox might still beat him out.

Funny how the battles for kicker and #2 QB both ended up at around 50/50, with no clear advantage for either player. I keep hearing that the Packers may bring in another kicker, but when I see the kickers who are actually available, they are all worse than Carlson and Joseph. I think they should keep Carlson, but just barely.

Backup QB also seems like basically a coin flip. I no longer think that both QBs are worth keeping on the roster, so I guess I would go with the more experienced Clifford by default. Pratt can go to the practice squad and maybe have a chance to replace Clifford at some point during the season.

Malik Heath made the team today, and Bo Melton will make it too. Grant DuBose's only shot is if they keep seven receivers, which they probably won't.

Emmanuel Wilson has probably made the team, due partly to injuries to A.J. Dillon and Marshawn Lloyd.

I still can't think of a way to get Christian Welch on the 53-player roster. Start him on the practice squad and promote him to the game-day roster a couple times for special teams duty. After that, he can stay on the practice squad unless there is an injury at LB.

I think either or both of Clifford and Pratt could be cut and make it to the PS. I don't have much faith that either would be able to keep the team afloat for a couple games if Love got hurt.

Ryan Wood's initial shot at a 53 is up on JSOnline.

I would also hope that it's a safe bet that Welch is on the final roster. He's a good special teams player and has a nose for the football on defense.

I'll also be very disappointed if Heath doesn't make the roster. All of his catches today produced either a first down or a TD, and I've always liked his physicality.

We'll see what happens with the kicker spot. I read a lot of opinions that the Packers would/should stick with Carlson because he's younger and could improve, but when exactly is this improvement going to happen? Missing from 32 yards is unacceptable. If they keep Carlson, there was no point in bringing in competition; kickers don't need to be "pushed"--either they can be counted on or they can't, especially when it comes to XPs and shorter FGs.

Mosby is listed as DL but a don't see a spot for him there unless Enagbare is displaced, but based purely on the athletic, all hands, plucked-from-the-air interception he displayed, I wonder if he doesn't find a home on the roster in the LB room.

Speaking of LBs, who's the starting MLB? Cooper hasn't shown enough when healthy and has been banged up for most of Training Camp. I hope he grows into the position, but who is on the field week 1?

In the grand scheme of things, Malik Heath is a superior WR talent overall (imo, of course) compared to Bo Melton. However, Bo Melton's speed gives him a certain niche as a potential roll player should Christian Watson suffer injury during the season- Melton's the only other pure speed option in the stable. These two are likely fighting it out for a final WR spot. Who makes it?

As another poster commented, I don't see a need to keep 2 backup QBs at this point, but at the same time, I feel better about both backup QBs today than I did last week. Pratt had the instant regret "big dummy" pick (you could see him taking his frustration with himself out on the recipient), but both QBs showed more ability to move the ball downfield today than they have in the past. Pratt probably has more upside than Clifford, but he's behind on picking up the offense. My guess is Clifford sticks and Pratt goes to PS.

RB room: My guess is Marshawn Lloyd gets placed on IR to start the season. Jacobs / Dillon / Wilson make the active 53. Jacobs gets to remind Packers fans what a true cowbell back looks like. Dillon gets to continue to sheperd the new RBs in the Green Bay "way" to start the season. Wilson gets to prove he can do it against the big boys consistently. Lloyd gets to work on getting healthy, strengthening himself, get deeper into the play book, and work on ball security technique. When Lloyd is eligible to return from IR, then the Packers get to struggle with a potentially difficult decision with how to manage the RB roster, but those problems are for another day.

Another note on Emanuel Wilson- I have been very cautious about annointing him the next great RB because he's been doing it vs. 2nd and 3rd stringers the last two preseasons, and his live action last year during the regular season, while solid to good, was a very small sample size before getting injured. That being said.. something that jumped out to me today in his game was his decision making. Wilson has an innate feel for when to slow it down and let things develop for a half-beat before picking his hole, and when to just drop the pads and hit it full speed with reckless abandon. I will concede this is a specific area that AJ Dillon has historically struggled with- he often hesitates when he should have hit it hard, and vice versa. I do believe Wilson has a strong opportunity to become a viable 53 man roster player in the NFL if he continues to show the excellent decision making out of the backfield I felt he put on display today.

That is a great explanation of the difference between Emanuel Wilson and A.J. Dillon. I think you are onto something there.

As for MLB, Quay Walker is the starter, with Isaiah McDuffie the #2 and probably Eric Wilson at #3, but I'm confident that Edgerrin Cooper will work his way into the lineup during the course of the season. He might already be there if not for the injury.

I'm with you on not being as down on the backup QBs as most people. I also am guessing that they keep Clifford and send Pratt to the PS.

You articulated what I love about Emmanuel Wilson!

Run blocking will only help, and would give Josh Jacobs a GREAT season.

Monk is a “Diamond” in the rough. He could be starting at guard or center by mid-season. Watch his consistent run blocking expertise. We need more dominant sustained blockers like him. Pack linemen looking around while play is going on. Monk keeps contact and continues to drive his responsibility into Lombardi drive.

I think it's all about personnel grouping; what they tried in Denver did not work. Coaches adjusting in-game can be huge.

To me, Mosby has made this roster. We don’t need another DE of the same type, but Mosby does things that the others can’t. He’s made an impact play in each game. He’s a situational piece who makes things happen and plays STs

Wilson I thought already had made this team, but now it’s pretty obvious. I don’t know if they will
Keep Dillon, though I think he will go on IR. Lloyd isn’t ready to start. I think Merriweather may have just earned a temporary roster spot or PS spot to be elevated from early.

Welch surely ought to make it, but I just can’t make the numbers work with the need to keep Oladap probably and the numbers at S. I’m not even sure AJJ makes it.

As to Kicker, I think we are going to end up with Carlson. I don’t see better coming free. Joseph isn’t better. If he was we’d be set now.

I’m not even going to guess at QB. I still believe Pratt needs time but has potential. I don’t see them keeping Clifford if they think both are about equal. If they bring in a bet then Pratt won’t run the scout team and won’t improve. I can’t get excited but I think Clifford either makes the 53 or is dine in GB.

I did not really study the OL behind Rhyan and Monk, but I still think Jones is better than Telfort and I don’t trust Dillard, particularly at RT. I’d rather keep Jones or Glover. I just don’t think they will.

Heath or Dubose? Heath woke up finally this week. I’d give it to whom ever they think is the better athlete and route runner. I can’t shake the view that Dubose is both, but there no sense in keeping both. They are too similar. The guy who has struck me from nowhere in the last couple of days is Pearson. Offensively he just did more than Davis has all summer and maybe ever. Could he be the real shock?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the cuts and moves to IR start tomorrow. The race has been run. Unless you are Orzech and got a free pass. That still bothers me. Hicks for the PS! That kid is exciting in terms of potential and blocks well already.
