Packers Question of the Day: Kevin King to IR

On Wednesday, the Green Bay Packers swapped Demetri Goodson to the active roster in exchange for moving Kevin King to injured reserve. The rookie cornerback only started five games this season, but played in nine of them.

He had been battling a shoulder injury for a majority of the season and likely faces surgery over the offseason. That may come sooner rather than later in hopes of giving him more of a recovery window before the start of the 2018 season.

What are your thoughts on the transaction?

Fine. Get him healthy, no need to risk making it worse. Especially hard to play that position with a weak shoulder.

Another TT and MM clown show; King to IR, activate Goodson (a TT basketball player who shouldn’t even be on the roster), and then he is immediately listed as DNP because he drank the GB water and contracted the dreaded Packer hamstring. Geez, what a circus!

The hits just keep on coming. King had this shoulder issue in college and it is nearly impossible to believe TT did not know about it. One has to question who has the final say on player injuries. For me this has now raised suspicions regarding the Martellis Bennett debacle. Perhaps there is something to his side of the story.

King has been playing with a bum shoulder all season long and has proven to almost everybody that he is the best CB on the team. Let's get him healthy for next season. Goodson will need help in man coverage, so Dom had better get him some.

Thompson knew about his shoulders without a doubt, EVERYBODY knew. Thompson just does what Thompson wants to do and doesn't give a damn what anyone else might want or think. Just look at his draft history, especially recent draft history and you'll know specifically why this team struggled against Tampa, was shut out by the Ravens, and were crapping our pants at the thought of being the Browns only win.

There's been a lot of people getting off the "In Ted We Trust" train this year because they can no longer deny it. Those still on the train have their Homer Glasses on so tight they'll never get off. They'll keep making excuses for Thompson just like I did.

Rdent, I don't think there is anything to Bennett's side of the story. His version is a self-contradictory mess further eroded by his subsequent actions.

Fresh body that will be injured and on the sidelines after 7-8 plays.
Not in game shape - offers nothing.

I would honestly rather him get his surgery now then to try and play through it. Get him ready to hopefully come back sooner in the offseason.

Yeah definitely...

I have no idea how long he will be out or how much time he will miss, but hopefully he can participate some in the offseason. And be ready for training camp next year.
The odds of that happening obviously improve by him getting surgery sooner then later.

Going to need another high draft pick at corner next year to shore a talent-thin position. It would be nice to get someone who can stay in the lineup. House is back to his 'always injured' state. Randall leaves the field once a game with a mystery injury but is convinced to return. Overall, they give me a bad case of our secondary sucks. Might need to go on IR soon with a bad case of Capers itch.

I can see TT drafting a DB in the first round. It's too bad we cannot get this position "fixed" so we don't have to worry about the depth there every year. Sometimes it feels as if we need 20 DBs to get through a season.

I agree and I agree. It would be nice to find a true starter in some of these other guys. Hawkins, Goodson, Rollins, Pipkins, etc and we don't really have starter caliber in the lot. Pretty weak for a draft and develop team.

This team can just never stay healthy don't know what to say even if by some miraculous way we were to make the playoffs we're going out the first time again anyways.... the whole freaking time is on injured reserve buluga, barclay, joe thomas, quinton rollins, , Ty Montgomery's think montravius Adams might be he's on injured reserve.

If Dom Capers was on injured reserve we might actually go to the Superbowl and win but he's never on injured reserve. If they actually did a CT scan on his brain they would see it deformed in the shape of a deflated football

Packers currently on IR:
Kentrell Brice
Bryan Bulaga
Kevin King
Ty Montgomery
Kyle Murphy
Taybor Pepper
Quinten Rollins
Jacob Schum
David Talley
Herb Waters

Barclay was cut weeks ago. Joe Thomas is active and playing. Adams was a healthy scratch last week.

So I guess we're going with Josh Hawkins and Demetrius Goodson. Well this just gives McCarthy another reason to keep Dom Capers oh the secondary was depleted that's why and we had too many injuries again but Dom Capers is just fine yep I can hear it already.

What I'd read was that we can expect Randall and Hawkins to open on Sunday as boundary CBs and that we can expect the Packers to use a S (either Burnett or Whitehead) to cover in the slot.

As I watched the Tampa Bay Green Bay Packer game Jameis Winston rolled out to the right and threw the ball as one of the Packer players fell on Jameis Winston ankle he was not taught how to jump to avoid an ankle injury however the Packers quarterbacks are constantly trained on how to jump on that type of play so they do not get injured these are the little tiny things that make the difference so a player does not get injured. I don't know what those things are but these are the little tiny details that none of us fans know about or think about we just see a player get injured we say oh dang. If the Packer coaches do not know how to coach the players on how not to get hurt then we just assume all the player got hurt by accident. The defensive coaching staff sucks trainers are not looking at the details of things. I remember watching the Seattle Houston game in the 4th quarter Seattle player jumped over a lineman and hit DeSean Jackson's knee and I saw the right knee tweaked a little bit although it didn't affect the Sean Watson at the time I saw it right on TV and I would have been very very concerned well after the game Thursday practice he tears his ACL with nobody touching him on his right leg which I still believe that the cause of the injury was the previous hit on Sunday in the 4th quarter was the problem these are the little details that are so important and they lost their best player for the year and their season is done.

The secondary was below average with a hurt King. He was still the best CB we had - even hurt - even as a rookie.

I expect the secondary to get a lot worse now. Ugh.

So true. I just don't see how we can compete for the Lombardi trophy. We are hoping to beat the Browns and hoping that Deshone Kizer doesn't shred this Packers secondary. This Packers organization needs to take a long hard look in the mirror.

While I agree its not better I don't know if really is any worse.
I'd rather have King, but he basically has been trying to play with one arm for the last however many weeks and has missed a quite a bit of time.

But last week against one of the better WR's in the league they held Evans to 2 catches for 33 yards and Desean Jackson to 2 catches for 24 yards. House played really good as did Randall. They did a really good job on those guys.

Lousy QB that couldn't find the open receivers, and when he did he wasn't always accurate.

Flip a coin on this Cleveland game. Nothing would surprise me with the team anymore.

I took the QB play into consideration, but I heard on different sports talk shows this week that House and Randall did a great job of covering those WR's. House was mostly on Evans and pretty much shut him down. With some help over the top.

I agree. Nothing would surprise me either.

I wonder how much of it was actually House and Randall, and how much was because the Packers couldn't defend a screen if their life's depended on it so they basically just kept throwing screens.

I had the same thoughts last week, I thought they did a good job against those two. But when you look how the Packers were dominated in TOP and yardage you have to admit what the Bucs were doing was working just fine. No need to even throw downfield and risk another TO.

Has anybody heard what the actual injury or diagnosis is? Given that the injury dates back to his college days, I hope it's something that can actually be fixed by surgery and not something that will be an aggravating factor throughout his career.

He had surgery on it once before, so what does that tell you.

Another drafted player with known health risk issues.
You know I don't like the fact this recluse weirdo only talks once a year.
He's accountable to no one, and I think his growing as old and tired as Capers. They can jettison both of them for all I care.

Exactly. Small wonder the defense has no face or identity. I mean the general manager only shows up down from his Mountain once or twice a year, for a few minutes, and even worse to me, the defensive coordinator never is on the sidelines.

Pathetic

Who gives a happy %#* whether he talks to the press? It doesn't make one teeny, tiny bit of difference on the field. If you confined your comments to things that did, I'd be much more receptive to your point of view. And I would guess others would be as well.

My thoughts are they drafted another player with a KNOWN health issue, and another guy that has made relatively NO impact, instead of a relatively proven, talented commodity, and valuable edge rusher, TJ Watt.

What this guy is thinking (TT) most of the time is pretty baffling.

In TTs defense, 90% of college players have some injury history anyway. And the ones that don't (and who have the HWS measurables and who can play) are loooooong gone by the time the 20s picks come around.

I think 90% is a gross exaggeration.
It used to be that teams always avoided college players with any significant injury history.
These days it seems he gambles on injured players to go for talent vs. healthy guys with less upside. Not sure that's working out too well.

Btw What's up with all the secondary injuries? What has changed in the game? I have been a fan since the 60s, and I don't ever recall even in the 70s and 80s Cb's or safeties going down like flies, unless it was a broken leg like Buchanon.

Run support. The CBs are required to tackle better as the OLbs blitz more. Remember Shields. Tramon Williams and his shoulder injuries. All get hurt more with concussions. A new DC will change this. If Capers is fired. They'll go to the 4-3-4 and take Dts. If they stay with the 3-4-4 they'll take an OLB or secondary.

Nice summary. Even if you change DC this problem will remain. It is a function of how defenses have to play in the league. Most teams play pass defense with an extra DB in the slot, that means either teams blitz, or play 7 deep, giving up pass rush. Pick your poison.
