Packers Question of the Day: Takeaways From the Loss

Last night was an ugly one. Expected, but ugly.

The Packers dropped a 34-23 game in Atlanta in the Falcons' new state-of-the-art stadium, and Aaron Rodgers took a beating in the process.

He was hit who knows however many times, several key starters suffered injuries and left the game such as Jordy Nelson and Mike Daniels (among others), and the defense -- for the most part -- was the same old song and dance against Matt Ryan and Juilo Jones.

There were a lot of positives to walk away with, though, but what were your takeaways?

My take aways where:

That Matthews can still be producive.
King looks like a CB.
Without Daniels they get no interior push. Ringo was the only other guy on the roster who could rush from the 3 tech. Still scratching my head on his release.
Damarius Randall has regressed to bust level.

I'm kind of hoping the Packers sign Ringo from off of the Lions PS. Hopefully, our starting Tackles will be good to go next week so the team can waive OL Pankey (resign him to our PS) in order to make space for Ringo.

I actually think Randall has some talent, he's just playing in the wrong scheme, and quite possibly the wrong position. He may just be a free safety they tried to make into a CB.

If anyone is awful right now, the new whipping boy should be Rollins. I swear to God that guy is spinning around on every single play. He looks like he never played CB in his life, and never has tight coverage on a receiver. Totally awful excuse for a CB. If they missed on anybody, it was Rollins. They think they're so smart finding diamonds in the rough from small schools in lousy conferences, then they realize they have a lump of coal instead, and are afraid to admit the mistake.

I've come to believe your first statement (Randall) is pretty much right. Problem is, if Randall were playing safety on this team he'd never see the field. If King moves past him to start on the outside, I think he naturally slides into the slot.

Yeah, he wouldn't play for Ha-Ha, but if he could tackle, he's better than Burnett. 3rd-4th string safety.

Given your comments on Gunter this is pretty funny stuff. Gunter went an entire playoff game, Randall a hand full of snaps

Results, not draft status should have been the factor in who got released.

Positives??? Well some players played well, like they're supposed to, but not nearly enough.

One takeaway is that this team is the same as the team last year (and years before). An offense that can only rely on two players consistently...Rodgers and Nelson. Partially because they're good, and partially because the head coach refuses to change "what they do". Like always, if Rodgers doesn't play at a super human level, this team has virtually no chance against upper tier opponents.

The other takeaway is that the defense, while they have improved team speed in certain areas, is still very subpar against elite offenses. I have come to the conclusion that there is enough talent to be a better defense, which leaves the D coordinator. I haven't ever been on the fire Dom Capers bandwagon, but I am now. It's been too many years of seeing the same thing happen. The faces change, but the results never do.

This is a good team, but unless something changes drastically, those that think they can compete for a championship will be heartbroken once again.

"One takeaway is that this team is the same as the team last year (and years before). An offense that can only rely on two players consistently...Rodgers and Nelson. "

I'll disagree here and say that Montgomery is starting to look like that budding star people were plugging him to be in the off-season. I had my doubts, but he really does look like he can help make that offense go.

"The other takeaway is that the defense, while they have improved team speed in certain areas, is still very subpar against elite offenses."

We keep talking about how this defense is faster and plays faster than a year ago, but the personnel remains largely unchanged. House for Gunter...other than changes on the line (which really don't impact play speed) that's about all that's changed. People point to Burnett playing more ILB, but he played a lot of ILB later last season, too. Until later in the game last night, King and Jones haven't played much. Maybe we have hope that this defense is and will play faster, but those faster personnel are only just starting to see the field. Until they secure ongoing and prominent roles, it's still pretty much the same group from a year ago...

I agree with Montgomery, but the guy calling the plays needs to use him more than he is....especially when your top reciever is out of the game.

Which begs the question: Why in the hell Williams is the number 2 back is beyond me...he showed nothing in preseason and hasn't in the 2 games so far. Jones would be the perfect compliment to Monty....and don't tell me that it's because Williams is such a superior blocker....

May have the physical ability, but as with MANY RB's in the NFL, he lacks vision. (ie - talent)

I think we'll be seeing King at corner a lot more, see if Randall is any better in the slot. Might as well get Jones more time on the field too, he's fast and seems to be a playmaker and we don't have many of those. Move over, I'm on the fire Capers train now as well.

My issue with Capers is I think he is using what he has, a group of under performing dbacks and avg linebackers and thus, his Nitro package is an attempt to make up for Ted T piss poor drafting. You dont get top dbacks in round three or the end of round two. Their are no diamond in the ruff corners just waiting to be found.
The team never gave up and played their hearts out. Cant put the blame on them

These are may take away's from the game -

This team had way to many injuries from before it started. Playing with our 3rd and 5th option at OT is not a scenario you wish for.
Losing their best WR and biggest offensive weapon really hurt the offense (just look back at 2015). Losing their best defensive player really affected the DL.

The turning point of the game was on the refs horrible Offensive pass interference on Bennett. They were down 17-7 at the time, and should have had the ball at midfield with about 1 minute left and 3 timeouts left. At the very worst they should have went into half time 17-7, and could have went into half time 17-10 or 17-14. That completely changes the game.

The defense had to many mental and physical mistakes in the game. Can't win games that way. To many dropped passes and missed tackles.

Atlanta is a scary good team at home. But showed last week they can be beaten on the road. If Green Bay wants to play them at Lambeau they better finish 1 game better then them.

We found one of our starting CB's! King was very, very good in his debut.

The only thing I'm concerned with this team is the amount of injuries they have. Hopefully none of them are long term though.

Injuries hurt. Time for the Pack to check the waiver wire for OL. The team fell apart in some ways. We have the motion penalties instead of the defense jumping. That happens when subs or newbies are playing. That pick penalty was atrocious, wrong and made a huge difference Couldn't or shouldn't McCarthy throw the red flay. Replay would have reversed it.

Randall and Rollins can't cover Jones. They were not even close. And looked terrible with tackling. The Atlanta DB's played much better. Maybe someone can figure out why.

But it is time to start playing Josh Jones. Work him into the slot position. Safety is a deep and talented position. I think they are the best players and should start playing. Can't expect Rollins and Randall to improve much. Because we will face Atlanta again. Need a solution. First figure from within what to do or go outside.

Anyone who still doubted the importance of Mike Daniels to this defense can't possibly after last night. Against Seattle, we had 2 head-scratcher calls go our way, last night 2 went the other way. Hate to use Russell Wilson's excuse, but those 2 plays could have changed the outcome. Glad the boys never stopped fighting. I bet some Atlanta fans were sweating thinking that 31-7 might become the new 28-3.

After last night I'm sure that this team has material to win the end prize at the end.

Offense will come together (they are missing preseasons snaps to be well oiled machine), D will solidify once the newcomers (rookies and vets) will be integrated in the group.

Only concern I have is what is with Davon House. He played bad in the first game, he was lost in the last one. Maybe he is still injured? I do not know, but I know that Packers are counting a lot on him.

I respect your opinions, but after last night I not sure how you can conclude that the defense will improve enough to "win the prize at the end".

You could interchange plays from the NFC champ game last year with this game, and other than the names of the players on the back of the jerseys, you wouln't be able to tell the difference. D backs trailing recievers by 3+ yards, receivers wide open over the middle of the field, and the inability to consistently stop the run.

Will the defense be better than the one last year??? It better be, and with healthy players it should be. Will it be good enough to ever stop an offense like Atlanta....that is wishful thinking.

Have to echo curevo's comment on the Packers difficulties covering over the middle of the field. Seems to happen all the time.

The D plays well and gets a team in 3rd and long and then the simple dump-offs, uncontested slants or crossing routes and the next thing you know it's first and ten after a 20 yard gain.

For some reason they don't jam at the line and any receiver with speed will be wide open with our trailing secondary and LB's trying to limit the damage. Don't know if this is scheme or talent, but one of the things we can depend on is how undependable they are covering the middle.

Thanks for your answer!
You want to know on what I founding my optimism?
Well, let check stats!
2016 regular season match at Atlanta
Packers - Falcons 32-33
1st downs 24 - 25
Total yards 331 - 367
Rushing 108 - 90
Passing 223 - 277

2016 NFCCG 21-44
1st downs 24 - 30
Total yards 367 - 493
Rushing 99 - 101
Passing 268 - 392

2017 regular season game 23-34
1st downs 24 - 19
Total yards 367 - 364
Rushing 59 - 141
Passing 308 - 223

There is tendency. Falcons offense is more or less same as it was last year. So, Packers obviously made stop passing their primary mission.
They cut down passing yards for 115 yards from previous game. Losing Mike Daniels resulted in less effective rushing D which allows 40 yards more when you look in comparison to previous game. Also, Falcons scored 27 points, 17 less than in previous game (7 points is on Falcons D, not O).
I also gave you basic statistic from regular season game in Georgia Dome. To show you what experience and unit gelling can do to the team. In the first match in 2016 Falcons were young and inexperienced defense and offense with several new key additions. Till NFCCG they gel and became fearsome team.
On that I base my optimism...

My takeaway is SSDY: Same S*** Different Year. It's basically a waiting game to see if the defense improves over the course of this year, just like every other year. Rodgers looks rusty, and I expect the offense will improve soon, once healthier at OT and Nelson gets back.

As shown by GB and NYG in the past decade, it doesn't really matter how you start. It matters how you are playing in december, and that you make the playoffs. So like almost every other year of MM's tenure, it's a waiting game to see if the defense improves, and it usually doesn't.

I do think the defense is marginally improved.

Exactly. What difference does it make if they get injured in preseason or game 1 or 2 of the regular season? They're still injured and useless to the team. They pamper the pro athlete way too much, just like the ridiculous pitch counts in baseball. 'Oh we have to take him out, he's at exactly 100 pitches, and if he pitches over 102, he will turn into a pumpkin and have no arms'. Ridiculous.

Just as I predicted all offseason long. Defense hasn't improved enough at all in the off-season. We still can't stop play off/championship caliber offenses.

Make all the excuses you want, our offense was banged up, Daniels was out but we got torched... again... and guess what, this is the team we'll see in the play offs again and please please don't be ignorant enough to think in 3 months we'll magically be able to stop elite offenses.

This is exactly why ALL off-season I said our defense didn't improve. King played fine BUT like I said, he's just a rookie. Too much to learn. Randall/Rollins are bad, House is insanely average. We can't get stops whatsoever. Chastise me all you want for being a realist but I've been saying it all year, go back and look for yourself on this website. Our defense is average enough to keep us in games against average teams (the entire NFC North, Bengals ect...) but we will get blown out by contending teams.

Where are my Randall/Rollins/House fan boys today? Where's that come back year? Hows the "star" package working?

the secondary is real bad. but i am really wondering why one of the main problems is not ever brought up. Watched a few scenes again, focusing on the CBs when they were supposed to be playing press man. And it really won't matter which CB. They all show the same: no inside leverage. no jam, and their footwork at the snap - bounce one step back.... That is as bad as it gets. And that is coaching, plain and simple. do we have any secondary coaches who can actually teach that?

Packer_Pete - I've been saying the same about the CBs footwork since Shields went down. He was the only CB we had since 2014 with the proper footwork. Everyone says Whitt is a great DB coach and maybe he is for the safeties but I don't see it with our CBs. They are always giving too much room. Thanks, Since '61

I agree with you, yet if you bring up Joe Whitt here then you'll hear from most that he's the greatest CB coach who ever was... I haven't really been convinced about his coaching expertise in years. Yes, he had some undrafted FAs or low draft picks and coached them to play in the NFL. But I'm not sure he has ever coached someone up to be elite. I remember how Shields would always say that he's learned the most from Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams...

It's week #2 in an electric environment for Atlanta. Need to be healthy and sharp to go in there and win that game. The first half was competitive but a potential 14 point swing with that penalty shifted momentum beyond where it was recoverable to win the game. Positives are young OL and DB's got experience in about as close as you can get to playoff atmosphere in the regular season. Packers will get better from this game and build upon this.

After seeing the Seahawks yesterday me thinks last weeks win, abeit a win, wasnt that impressive. Ouch.
The Vikes in one draft were able to replace their entire O line. Last years didnt cut it so they replaced them. Situation solved.
Ted let our O line talent walk. Ted let a lot of guys walk. Ted cant replace and build a team on 7 draft picks and little free agent help. Blame ted, not the players.
I mean if this team didnt have Rogers they would be worse then the Bears who now have a very good defense in search of an offense.

This is factually untrue. MN drafted Eflein, who is their starter, and Isadora, who hasn't played a snap. They bought their tackles, and promoted Easton, an UDFA they traded for in 2016.

Their OL isn't solved. It isn't particularly good. Better than it was, perhaps.

It would have been nice to win last night. But without Bulaga, Bakhtiari, Nelson, Daniels etc.. in that situation - home opener and a new stadium for Atlanta.... That wasn't going to happen.

It was ugly. The defense did show improvement though. From shitty to marginally shitty... With room for growth. Only one loss. Enjoy the W Falcons fans.

Let's get healthy. Get the the bye at 7-1 or 6-2 (which I think I we do) and see you again in January.

Agree Bearmeat. They came out of the pre-season heathier than in years and now a free fall of injuries but none of which look at this time serious, we were fortunate with the hits Rodgers took that he held up, that is the only positive injury wise. The team needs to get healthy, analyze and correct their mistakes, make any personnel changes if needed and win one game at a time. They key is to get home field for the playoffs, Atlanta outside on grass as good as they are do not play at near the same level as they do indoors on the carpet. No over reaction at this time, as Belichick says, "just do your job" going forward.

It is amazing what one game reveals and how quickly the training camp hopes dissolve. I still think that this team has some good pieces but are they enough and do we know how to use them. That is what the season is for. Here is my two game takes:

Our defense isn't good enough to get to the top. Let's face it, our DB's can't cover Jones and Sanu. We also struggled to handle the Atlanta RB's. Talk all you want about "Nitro" but Atlanta basically could score or convert when they needed to.

Our offense is good but it relies entirely on Aaron Rodgers to do amazing stuff. Yes we got some bad calls but that shouldn't matter against an average defense like Atlanta. Yes, Bakh and Bulaga would have helped. We might be able to trade blows with Atlanta but we don't have enough difference makers outside of Rodgers. I am hoping that Montgomery, Bennett and at least one WR become those studs. We'll see.

Beyond that, our D is the key to getting to the next level. Despite the draft and FA investment, we continue to struggle. I think that Dom's defense are great - 20 years ago. We are too far off the pace to win games with this D when facing good offenses and decent O-lines.

That says whatever Packers did there would be Falcons win. There is the reason why Packers are "stadium opener team". They do not have owner who will drink Godells blood for disgrace zebra performance and you can adjust outcome as you want...

1. The secondary is just as bad as last year. Randall and Rollins are 4th or 5th CBs on any NFL team at best.
2. The D played well last week, but after seeing Seattle, it should be obvious that the Seattle O is one of the worst in the league. While Atlanta may be one of the best Os in the league, I think the Packers will have trouble to hold good teams under 24.
3. Packers O can't rely on Rodgers and Nelson alone, but it looks like this is exactly what they are doing. The new TEs haven't arrived yet or are not nearly as good as anyone thought.
4. Struggle for the young OTs was expected, but they played alright, given the circumstances. It was not catastrophic, which is a win in my book.
5. Injuries continue to hurt this team, but at this point, can someone really count on players like Cobb or Bulaga to stay healthy? Availability was supposed to be a factor...
6. The Packers are who we thought they were. A good team who may make it to the playoffs, but at the same time not good enough to get beyond real good teams like the Falcons.
7. Julio Jones is certainly an elite NFL WR. Sanu is not. Yet the Packers secondary couldn't deal with Sanu either - shows me how very pedestrian the Seattle WRs are...
8. It could be worse - Mike Glennon could be the starting QB...
9. The Packers better win the NFC North - there are several teams in the NFC which will have a better record, and it won't just be the division winners...

- I hate seeing injuries occur to the Packers and there were a lot of them in this game.

- M.Daniels better be okay. The medical staff needs to be really smart with him so that his hamstring injury doesn't plague him all year long. He's the heart and soul of this defense -- it needs him at 100%. Sign C.Ringo off of the Lions Practice Squad in the mean time or re-sign RJF.

- The refs made a least one atrociously bad call that had a pretty big effect on the game.

- I miss J.Cook and I hope M.Bennett can become the difference maker we all thought he'd be.

- Rodgers needed to play smarter than he did.

- King looked solid. House is not good in run support -- gets sucked in way to often. Randall and Rollins are struggling to stay with guys or show much alertness when the ball is in the air -- hope they can improve on those things because the team will need them or at least one of them. Should J.Hawkins receive an opportunity to play over Rollins given how bad Rollins has been?

- I'm not much of a fan of J.Williams and there was nothing within this game to alter my opinion on him. Hopefully, I will be proven wrong about him.

- The two rookie Tackles for the most part impressed me -- they held up well-enough. Nevertheless, hopefully our two starting Tackles can return next week.

Biggest takeaway? Some of you guys are way overacting. Honestly, unless you expected this team to go 16-0, we had to lose somewhere. Might as well be to arguably the best team in the NFL. Look at the Pats. They are still considered cream of the crop and expected to go deep in the playoffs, yet they got blown out for their opener. We were playing the best team, in their new stadium, with significant injuries, and a young team. Yes, there were some significant issues all around. But give'm a season worth of experience (plus a bit of luck with injuries), and you could see a much improved performance in the playoffs. All I'm saying is one game doesn't determine a season. I fully expect us to annihilate Cincy next week on both sides of the ball. Todays goat can be tomorrows hero. Let the dislikes roll...

Collin, well stated. That was my overarching take-away. I will add that the game gave some younger and new players a lot of reps. McCray showed he can play. King showed his potential. Murphy looked a little better on the left side. Allison looks like he could become a regular target for AR. Dialed-Out showed he can be cut to bring back Ringo.

Allison looked like a bottom of the roster, free-agent receiver that didn't make proper adjustments on routes.
Looked like a guy that didn't have the smarts, or maybe his brain was foggy from too much ganja.
Just a free agent wide out that shouldn't be in prime time.
Oh wait........

Imagine how bad Janis must be if they played this guy over him?

Allison is young and raw in his second year and your talking about him making verteran adjustments. He's only been targeted 27 times in his career so I don't expect him to have the best rapport built with Rodgers yet.

You know why right? Because they lack the confidence to press cover because they don't have the speed to recover if they get beat on a move.
I saw corners with no confidence, and people are ripping on 23, but 24 was just as bad if not worse. He was spinning around like a top on every play, just totally lost. They took a safety and tried to make him into a corner (23), and drafted a small school CB (24), that just isn't very good. Tried to be the smartest guy in the room on the small school draftee's. Rollins will be gone next year I predict.

Exactly! What I've been stating all year. Nothing changed... but yet we expect different results... I never understood that train of thought. Our CB's are incapable of stopping anybody and this is why we will fail in the play offs like we did last year.

It ALL starts at the LOS (line of scrimmage).
I saw a team that dominated the LOS against Seattle, particularly on defense, but I was skeptical because their OL is so bad.
I needed the ATL game to confirm where GB is at.
I got the confirmation.
GB was blown off the ball on 95% of the plays last night, on both O & D.
On O they were a bit better, even missing 2 tackles, but the defense didn't get enough penetration and weren't able to hold the point of attack on running plays either.
It' sad to me, because this will end just like the prior recent seasons have.

I'm not sure but is this coaching issue? Do they practice enough press coverage? If D can't get to QB within 2-3 seconds, a good QB with good receivers have killed the Packers for the last few years.

Personally, I don't understand how a faster receiver cannot get a step on a slower defender every time. If the QB can lead the receiver properly, it seems unstoppable.

Takeaway:
1) Atlanta's secondary has been taught to tackle through the legs. Green Bay's secondary is allowed to consistently tackle high and try to grab shoulder pads.

2) The Packers secondary is unable to flip their hips out of their back peddle and accelerate to follow a receiver that has made a 90-degree cut. If you want to beat the Packers all you need to do is run crossing patters. The receiver makes his cut and it's like our DBs are stuck in quick sand and the receiver accelerates away and Ryan sits back and shoots fish in a barrel as he consistently hits receivers that are WIDE open!

3) If you are going to play safeties at LB, they need to be fast enough to avoid OL men and still make a play in the run game. Atlanta's OL really killed us in the run game on the second level. They would just engulf Burnett and he was like velcro, he could not get off of the block.

4) King needs to start immediately. We have about 17 to 19 weeks to get him ready to cover Julio when we see Atlanta again in the playoffs.

5) Same thing with Josh Jones - We have to start now getting him ready for the playoffs. His speed is sorely needed.

Brian Lee - your point number 1 is DEAD ON the money.
I was yelling at the wife - WATCH THIS TACKLE - that defensive back knows all you do is grab the guy by the leg and hold on till help arrives.
That's how you tackle! When do we EVER do that? When? EVER??

Point number TWO - dead on the money as well. Bunch of CB's with the same style/technique - some lack of flexibility in the hips. Stands to reason they all look the same - it's the same scouts and personnel management evaluating the players in the draft, is it not? Excellent point!!

Point 3 was totally predictable as THE WAY to attack the vaunted Nitro package. It was inevitable and predictable.
Run the ball straight at the undersized ML/SS and you got 4-5 yards a play. Bring the LB back in, and resume play calling as normal and matchup with a TE or 4th receiver. Predictable.

1. Actually, didn't Atlanta rate as one of the poorer tackling teams in the league last year?

profootballfocus.com/news/sig-stats-tackling-efficiency-by-team

They didn't look great against Chicago, either, and they missed a few, last night, too. They play fast, they play aggressive. Guys might miss, but there's always someone coming to finish the runner off.

3. Daniels (and eventually Lowry) getting hurt put the Packers in a spot where they were pretty much stuck playing 2 DL in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Not according to the former Packer and WI running back, Gary Ellerson.
He was saying today on the radio that ATL is very well coached, and their guys know how to tackle. Repeated it several times. Who knows more about what a teams good at, an ex-NFL player, or two schmoes on a Packer blog?

Did you see the play where Cobb faked the CB out of his jock, the guy practically fell down, recovered, and caught Cobb from behind for about a 3 yard gain? Unbelievable play, the quick reaction and balance. Ellerson mentioned this play several times as examples of awesome tackling. I had forgotten about it amidst all the other plays last night. At the time I saw it I was in total shock. Most players would have had at least ten yards on a shake move like that. The way that CB recovered was nothing short of shockingly athletic!

Cook? Cook missed more than a third of the games but made maybe 2 big catches all last season. We remember the Dallas one. Can you name another big catch he made last year? It's true that when he was playing, the offense picked it up a notch, but more because he was threatening safeties than because he was making impact plays.

That said, I don't know what's up with Bennett or why Kendricks isn't playing much.

We have 3 TE all about equal.

RRod - slooooow good hands, no physicality
Mouth Bennett - no hands, slow, can block
Kendricks - claude rains (the invisible man) just not there

absolutely no threats to the defense, especially not up the seam. AT ALL!

J Cook would be an upgrade

I am very curious to see how Vince Biegel, Montravius Adams, and for the sake of this past game Ahmad Brooks make an impact on our defensive front 7. I am hopeful that the combination of those 3 later in the season would have helped along the front 7 with the absence of Daniels, particularly if Montravius can be solid.

Brooks is notably a good run stopper, Biegel is hopefully able to apply some pressures in rotation.

All in all, I think a lot of our defense will depend on how those 3 shake out as the season goes on.

I think they really missed Brooks last night. They tried moving CMIII around from time to time and bringing Fackrell in to man the outside, but that didn't do too much. The dropoff to Kyler Fackrell is, IMO, a precipitous one.

Clark looked good late last year and so far this year. Did he leave to hold Daniels sore hammy? I didnt hear his name or see him make a play last night.

My takeaways are:
MM needs to get Monty more involved in the offense. He is their best offensive player after Aaron Rodgers.
Although our backup tackles played well last evening, all things considered, but Rodgers took too many hits. If that continues he'll end up like Andrew Luck.
Losing Daniels on defense is similar to losing Rodgers for the offense. It changes everything else.
If Randall and Rollins are not going to be able to keep up with NFL receivers they need to at least tackle better.
House has been a non-factor for the 1st two games.
King should start at corner for the remainder of the season.
Same old story, if Rodgers and the offense doesn't play well our defense can't keep us in the game especially against strong offensive teams. If that doesn't change this season will end during the playoffs again without an SB.
Thanks, Since '61

they actually were NOT better as rookies...that is the talking head mantra but not true. The eye test had them as failures and the metrics have them as bad. The Randall pick v San D gave the people who don't watch close a randall doll but in fact his coverage on the play was terrible. Only JPeppers made a great play and forced a really bad throw to a WR who was really open.

Randall does have quickness and speed to recover and did but even a bad throw would have won the game for SD. But repeating the ted is great wow what a draft choice is much easier than watching and seeing what really happened.

My takeaway? I saw a shot of Rodgers on the sideline right when the game started and it was all I needed, knew they didn't have a chance. He was scared and worried. Not that I blame him with 2 back up tackles. Everyone keeps saying how good the tackles played, but that's only because they adjusted the whole game plan so they didn't have to block more than 2.5 seconds. That is not, and has never been our offense. They played scared, maybe they had too, but you usually don't win that way.

I wish TT had paid TE Cook the couple of Mil difference between him and Kendricks plus bringing in TE Bennett for this team.

Observation: Falcons traded 5 draft picks in 2011 to move up to 6th for J. Jones. TT always trades to move down for more bodies looking for diamonds instead of taking chance on a "special" game changing player in top 10.
Packers in 25 yrs have not been a bad enough team to ever get picks in top 10/15 draft picks.

My takeaways:

1. Last night tells us nothing about how this team can compete when healthy.

2. As I expected Atlanta scored 34, we lost big, and McCarthy refused to insert Jones over Williams at backup RB.

3. Cobb is a good WR, but he's fragile and expensive.

4. Clay did fairly well with an easy matchup, but this defense is utterly dependent on the attention drawn by Daniels and Perry.

5. Kevin King and Josh Jones bring a level of burst and impact I've almost never seen in Green Bay's secondary. They're raw, but must play more, and Capers MUST start sending Jones on some blitzes.

6. Not having Bak and Bulaga GREATLY hampered what our offensive weapons could do with their routes--especially TE's and RB's.

7. Bennett creates little space and has had terrible focus early on. This will improve, but he should apologize to the fans...

8. ...as should Ted Thompson for using our top 2 draft picks on Randall and Rollins.

9. Fackrell is improving.

10. Ryan should never play on a fast track.

The Packers went on the road to the new stadium built for last year's Superbowl participant. They didn't have their best receiver, their best defender, or their two best offensive tackles (among others). I'd say that Bakh, Nelson and Daniels are among the five best GBP players, and Bulaga is top ten. Very predictably, they lost.

In 1996 the Packers got blasted by a so-so, 10-6 Dallas team. With two minutes left in the game, the score was 18-0, Dallas, until GB scored a garbage-time TD, and failed to convert the 2 pt conversion. Final score: 21-6 Dallas.

That 1996 season turned out pretty good.

It always amazes me how over-reactionary fans can be. The Packers look good beating up on a JV Seattle offense, and everybody raves about how the Almighty Nitro Defense is going to conquer the world. One week later a Packers team devastated by injuries loses by 11 on the road to last years Superbowlers, and people immediately start wetting themselves.

I'm not saying that Packers are shoo-ins for another Lombardi, but geez. Even good teams lose on a pretty regular basis. How long ago is it now that the Dolphins completed the NFL's one and only undefeated season? Oh right.... 1972 ... 45 years ago.

Let's let this thing play out, huh?

Whether it's MM's play calling or Rodgers' execution, this was just another display of stubbornly looking for the deep vertical plays and ignoring what the defense was giving them, until it was too late.

Once Rodgers started panicking and pushing too hard to save a game that wasn't yet at the point of needed to be saved (Interception before the half, anyone?), we finally came out in the second half and started methodically moving the ball with quick, controlled strikes and a balanced ground attack.

Had we realized eschewing the short to intermediate stuff and holding on to the ball looking for the big yardage play wasn't working sooner, and just plinked and plunked early on and taken occasional shots when opportunity presented it self, this game would have been an entirely different beast.

I'm not even worried about the defensive perfomance- I expected this game to be high scoring affair. I was more troubled by the way the offense operated in the first half, and particularly disappointed in the way Rodgers and the offense responded (over-reacted) to a manageable deficit in the second Q. Did not look like any semblance of veteran leadership. Let things spin far more out of control than they needed to.

Disappointing showing. Good news is, these Packers teams tend to respond well to taking a lashing in front of a national audience.

BTW, anyone who says this offense is all about Rodgers and Nelson and we're lost without that connection wasn't watching this game.

Allison, Cobb, Adams, Montgomery all made significant contributions and showed some playmaking ability last night.

I'm slightly concerned about Bennet, though. Several catches dropped that were needed. I'm sure it was just a down game for him, but those are the catches we need him to make.

Not impressed by Adams' 3 receptions for 18 yards in the first half, when the game was decided. He had 81 yards in garbage time. Allison looks like a decent #3/4 WR, but I like his release off the line of scrimmage this year. It looks improved.

Agreed, I also thought McCarthy mismanaged that pre half possession and should have taken a knee before the half, regrouped and gotten out of there only ten points down. Instead, he pushes the envelope again and we got nailed before halftime, just like last week. That to me was the turning point, not the Bennett call. We lost any hope for momementum after that and in fact came out lackluster on our first possession. It was another bad gamble.

I am saddened by the play of Randall and Rollins. They could not stop Jones from catching the pass or tackling him. Even healthy. At least King seemed better. So I am all in with King starting and letting him develop. Randall and Rollins can help out with team like the Bengals coming up. Also, Josh Jones as slot DB. Get him in the game and let him develop also. Because we know the best of Randall and Rollins. And it won't win a Super Bowl.

The offense looked out of sync. Motion penalties, dropped balls. Not even counting the two tackles. McCarthy needs to get the offense into a rhythm and fast. They might get past Cincinnati, but they need to be in rhythm soon. Montgomery looked good and the only bright spot of all the all-world offense guys that we have that we are expecting to create mismatches. Haven't seen that except for 88. And the Pack needs good OL backups. Three players are in for a look. TT needs to have a better philosophy than draft and develop.

I agree that Capers has to strongly consider giving Josh Jones some snaps at the slot. I wrote during the preseason that Jones being 220 pounds is blinding folks and pigeon-holing him into the hybrid ILB. I think he can play both slot and hybrid ILB, but at the moment, we need a slot CB. Burnett has been pretty good at the hybrid.

Ha, always wanted to do that. There is some validity to the doom and gloomers however hear me out.

I have not been a Capers "fan" by any means however saying we look the same is not quite accurate. Damarious had a rough game and why he was on Julio with a bracket I don't know, but Capers did change personnel and used King afterward with some success. I would imagine the rookie becomes a starter moving forward. The offense was quite limited with green tackles. The Falcons are going to be incredible in that stadium but less so on road. We just simply have to have a better record at the end of the season! That's All, but seriously it's week 2. Chill out people.

Do you think Capers is playing favorites with his boss. King is the new kid played great and yet he was bench sitting. Didnt they realize his talent in pre season, and yes he missed some due to injury but isnt Capers trying to make TT happy starting his top picks and those with experience and not the ones who truely can play?
For example, why do we have Janis? He serves zero purpose on this team.

No he's not playing favorites however, our secondary is slightly complicated and Capers is usually hesitant to plays rookies, plus he felt he really needed to see what we have in the "R" brother in year 3 which looks to be a disappointment. I slightly agree with you on Janis

If we get out of a September without any more serious injuries, I will be very happy. What the NFL and NFLPA did with the CBA is what created this mess. Players cannot go from short practice camps to full bore full speed games and expect serious injuries not to happen. Does the NFL want good games or not. Last night game was a perfect example of what happens when you throw two teams who are not prepared for the hard cutting, full speed hitting of pro football. NFL teams know that September is an extended preseason, and play the first two games, as final warm ups for the real season, which starts in October. Stupid and dangerous to the players, and cheating the fans who are paying for, and deserve a better product on the field.

Oh, the game. Well we all knew the outcome the second Bark was declared out. The two most important positions on your football team manned by your teams third string OL, and a guy most of us didn't even know was on the 53. Like that's going to end well. Combine with a vanilla game plan on both sides of the ball, and a home opening with the other team, whip and stir, for disaster. At least the packers got out pretty much intact.

Not buying the Flu thing. A player has the flu so bad they cant practice you keep them away from the rest of the team no have them on the sidelines.
My take, Beluga has a serious ankle issue and they dont want anyone to know. Another Mike M thing covering up injuries and downplaying them so he is much smarter then everyone else. NOT

GB sent Bulaga home. They kept him away from his teammates. You routinely form opinions based on erroneous facts.

I usually don't agree with al bundy and his negativity, but he has a point here - you must've missed all the TV shots on the sideline where Bulaga was right in the middle of everybody, right next to Bakh, and just a couple yards behind Rodgers...

People who have the flu remain contagious for about five days after the first onset of symptoms. I don't think any of us know when the first onset of Bulaga's symptoms were, but the Packers were already sending him home by last Tuesday. Do a little math and it certainly doesn't seem impossible that he could safely be on the sidelines for the game. I don't think we need to speculate about whether or not there was a second bacterium shooting at Bulaga from the grassy knoll.

Oooo...

Another doomsday...

Are Packers exists or this is just an imagination. Because they must be 0-16 team with all thoise spitting on everybody.

And yes, sometimes offense should take care of the game. Not give to the opponent on 2 subsequent drives 14 points and than talking about how D was bad.

As much I like Aaron Rodgers (I'm in love with the way he plays!) this game is on his shoulder completely. He is aware of that. He said on press conference that he gave 14 points to Atlanta and the difference was, at the end only 11 points.

So, it is obvious that D had not lost the game in Atlanta but 2 factors:
1. Poor game from Packers offense!
2. Ridiculous decission by referees (I hope they will have to pay penalty as players has for that disdgrace!)
Evidence: http://www.packers.com/media-center/videos/Rock-Report-Pick-plays/325e65...

All is good. Aaron is very, very clever guy. He will never made same mistake as he did on Sunday.

Packers will be fine! They are real, they are not imagination.

Has anybody seen Atlanta's schedule ? They are a shoe in to the championship game. A SB team with a schedule this easy is a disgrace , Mr. Goodell. What's is he doing - promoting their stadium or billionaire Blank?

Why Don Capers is still GBs defensive coordinator is nothing short of a mystery. It's Shawn Slocum all over again.
