Packers Question of the day - Takeaways from the win

Capturing their fifth NFC North title in six years, the fortunes of the Green Bay Packers have completely flipped compared to where they were at the end of November.

Aaron Rodgers slung four touchdowns through the air, including two to Davante Adams. While injuries reappeared for a team that was finally getting healthy, the Packers hung on for the 31-24 victory and now have a date at Lambeau Field in a week with the Giants.

What were your final thoughts from the game?

Well, the good news is the Giants haven't scored more than 19 points since playing the Browns and the Bears. The Cowboys are probably up next and they don't have a great WR right now. I guess we can hope that Atlanta gets knocked off along the way. Maybe Q & R will be physically ready for the Super Bowl. Maybe they will have found their mojo by then.

That's because the young men have been playing hurt (much like Adams last year). It's one thing to be inexperienced, but it's another to be inexperienced and injured.

There you are Cow. I was worried about you. Personally I believe the Packers could win 55 -7 and you'd find something wrong with the game. Good to have you back.

PS... Please make a predictions about Rodgers, Montgomery at RB, Cook at TE, the WR Corps and a few more defensive players and I think we'll be good.

BTW.. Good point about those 3 being physical. I think it makes a huge difference when they at least TRY and disrupt the route. This 10 yards off crap drives me nuts!

Have to agree with Cow here. I thought the patched-up secondary played better without Rollins and Randall. They actually had tight coverage and broke up a few passes ... until Detroit went over the middle late in the game.

Randall has to be one of the worst CB's in the league in open space(which is where the receiver often finds himself). Don't know if his accumulated injuries are the cause but he looks like he'd wiff on a practice dummy.

Rollins and Randall have been playing hurt and their speed has taken a hit. It's the only thing that explains their huge performance drop off.

I'm actually 100% against Capers "getting creative". It doesn't usually work. It almost never works. I work on extremely complex engineering problems. Every time we keep things as simple as possible it's better. The Team understands their roles and the roles of the other team members. Capers intellectual ability to understand extremely complex schemes is not transferable to the intersection of the population with the physical ability to play NFL CB and a young enough age to play for the Packers. It never has, it never will. The Packers where a missed throw on a "WTF are we doing?" play by Randall from a tie game and overtime. Capers needs to reign it in, contain the other teams offense and let Rodgers and the passing attack win the game.

Interesting six months ago you where lauding the talent of the secondary. I think there are two things going on. Those guys are beat up. Playing cb with a bum hammy is going to make you look not talented. Capers routinely asks for too much complexity. He has for decades, he can't help hisself for long. Which is why I'd prefer a different philosophy because the way the Packers assemble a roster they are never going consistently have the personnel for it.

Agree. Back pedaling and playing CB with a hamstring injury is really not possible. Randall needs to sit, he's not helping team at all.

If complexity is the problem, it would be reflected in the play of guys like Clark or Martinez or Lowry...guys who are green and haven't had a full off-season to dedicate to their book learning. After almost two years in DCs system, you would like to think that Randall, Rollins, Gunter and others would have reasonable understanding of the scheme. In the end, the argument on these guys likely isn't that the system is too complex, but rather that they either don't prep well enough or don't process fast enough on the field.

Al Harris was slow and he was a solid CB. Randall and Rollins just have terrible technique. It seems like everything they have their eyes on the receiver he goes up and makes a grab on them. Then, their heads are in the backfield and and they let the guy blow past them.

If Brice were a little bigger I consider putting him in as the moneybacker in place of Burnett. Burnetts pretty good in coverage too.

Brice is fast and hits hard. Love to see him chase sideline to sideline, Negative is he would get swallowed up in the running game.

Admittedly, he's young, but the little bit I've seen of Brice labels him as being more of a downhill, box safety or a deep centerfielder. I don't think he does all that well in coverage (and certainly his agility numbers from his pre-draft workouts point in that direction), but he runs and hits a ton.

Will this be a season of gifts - TM at RB and a little more of Rip and now maybe Burnett and Hyde at CB? There weren't too many plays they showed in detail but the press man coverage they played looked promising. Maybe this will get contagious for the return team and someone will shine there too. With AR playing back at his elite level, anything is possible again.

I like when AR said after the game that there is "a hunger that maybe wasn't there the last couple years".

My takeaways? When you have Aaron Rodgers, a healthy O-Line, a healthy TE, and healthy WR's this team is NEVER out of a game.

At 4-6 I had given up hope. The Offense had shown a glimpse here and there, but they couldn't seem to put 4 quarters together on the same Sunday and I was already checking out Mock Drafts.

Then much like "Relax" Aaron said "We can run the table" and they DID!! There's not a team in the NFL that wants to play the Packers right now, NOBODY.

I read McCarthy said they were down to 3 Defensive play calls when Hyde and Gunter were outside and Burnett and Brice were in the slots, THREE, and they still only gave up 10 2nd half points which is amazing in it's own right. This Offense hasn't looked like this since 2014 and this one might be almost as good, maybe better in some ways. That Team depended almost solely on Nelson, Cobb, and Lacy. This team has Cook, Nelson, Adams, Monty, AND our new secret weapon The Ripper!!!!

Nick, I like what you have written, and the only issue I have is depth. So the Pack is playing w/o Randall and Rollins...what happens if Hyde/Gunter/Burnett goes down? That and right Tackle are troublesome to me.

Compared to the Cowboys, Green Bay is playing their 2nd string defense. I wish just once they could make it to the playoffs with just the league average in injuries.

This team is to be congratulated on doing a very remarkable feat. 6 wins in a row is very hard in the NFL including 3 of them division opponents.

My takeaway is I'm starting to wonder if Demarious Randall should even be considered as a CB in the future.

I know he's battled groin and shoulder injuries this season and deserves one more season of observation as a CB, but I'm having some doubts.

I know he will be a CB for this season of course, but remember-- he was a safety in college. Yes, he has prior CB experience while at Mesa Community College, but is he better suited to play safety?

I ask because the aggression and tackling skills you see on film at ASU seem like a different player than the one we watch now.

I also raise this issue because look at Nick Perry -- he earned a 1st round grade as a DE, but the Packers forced him to convert to an OLB. That obviously didn't not work, yet they forced the issue for years (and he was injured a lot too). Now with his hand in the dirt, he's a force to be reckoned with.

Nevertheless, you have to wonder if -- eventually -- the Packers will even consider the fact that Randall is just better suited to play safety than CB. Morgan Burnett will be a FA in 2018 as well.

Actually, what I really like about this team is what others continually harp about. We lack some talent, but make up for it in fortitude. The reason we are lacking in talent and depth in some areas is because we are consistently drafting at 24-32. Over the course of 8 playoff years in a row, that will take it's toll. The system is designed that way.

TT can be maddeningly stubborn in his refusal to make splashed in FA, but to recurrently stay near the top when all forces push against it is tough. It requires unearthing gems, and drafting better than others and playing the salary cap like a fiddle. And he has done it again and again.

Coaching up the later-round draft choices takes more. I think our coaches success is evidenced by the fact that our team always seems to improve as the year goes on. Our youth is a by-product of the way we manage the cap, and it requires good coaching to get anything out of the types of players we have the opportunity to draft.

Finally, I'm probably biased, but I believe in "Packer People" as a concept. I think we get better people on the whole than other teams. When drafting, developing, and character/fortitude intersect, we do more with less than (almost) any other team. It makes our success that much more enjoyable.

Your point about drafting late in the round is well taken. It's hard to find difference makers like Kuechly, Donald, Von Miller or Mack drafting where we do. They're long gone.

Contrarily, the Pats keep finding a way to keep the machine oiled. TT needs to use all the avenues available to him to procure talent. D&D should be the base, about 80 to 90% of the roster. He should do more of the Cook type deals, Adding Cook gives the Packers something they haven't had since Finley without decimating the cap. Just a few veteran FA's at positions of weakness can go a long way.

I get the feeling if Eliot takes over, he'll be a little more aggressive in trades and FA. Can't waste anymore of Arods best years.

They just got beat by a very flawed Arizona team at home week before last even when they were playing to wrap up seeding. They almost got beat by San Fran last week. They aren't the Seattle team we've seen in the past, but they are good at home.

A team that can exploit Seattle's poor OL will be able to play with them. I think Detroit has a punchers chance against them this week...I think the spread is too big in that one. Detroit got pressure on ARod on Sunday, but otherwise has not demonstrated that they can do it on a regular basis. If they can get to Wilson, I think that one will go down to the wire.

Seattle hasn't run away from any team of substance this season. They don't run away from anyone because their offense is poor. They've got three wins by 3 scores or more this season against bottom 10 teams. If you're alleging that Detroit is a bottom 10 team, then I'll take your prediction for what it is. I think Detroit is in the equation in that game all the way 'til the end.

I'm sure it was intentional but everyone of the Patriot players Cow named was a FA, trade or a player released and then signed by the Pats. The Patriots will take a chance on a player, see if he'll conform to "The Patriot Way", and keep him if he does or cut him if he can't.

BUT

The Packers can beat anyone on any Sunday.

The Packers beat the Giants before the Packers were hot.
They beat Seattle and i don't give a damn about the Link. Without Earl Thomas this team is close to the same.
The Packers lost to Atlanta in Atlanta by one point.
Dallas killed the Packers but the playoffs are different. Last year the Cardinals whooped Green Bay and it took OT against Janis and Abby to beat em.

Any Given Sunday!

Your negativity sucks...

By the way if the only thing you can compare the Packers to is the Patriots then they are wildly successful. Also I don't think you can use the Patriots as the example everytime, they are the exception not the rule. They are the golden goose and have the greatest coach and QB of all time (as of now). Plus they play in a shitty division that guarantees them a home playoff game every year.

McCarthy has 5 playoff losses on that last play of the game... i think of 3 of them right off the top of my head that could have gone the other way had a player stepped up and made the play.

Good FAs at specific positions. Some positions command a lot more money on the open market. I don't think you want to be buying marquee names at edge rusher, CB, LT or QB on the open market if you can help it.

MY FAVORITE TAKE AWAY FROM THE WIN:

I was surfing through the reader comments over at the Detroit Free Press. Apparently not knowing what else they could possibly be indignant about, a bunch of Lion fans were arguing that the NFL's "12 men on the field" penalty was inherently unfair, and that defenses like the Lions last night should be allowed to have 12 guys on the field "if they are just running off and don't affect the outcome of the play."

Uh... sorry, Lions fans, but one might easily argue that the entire Lions organization is "not affecting the outcome of the play."

It's clear that the front 7 getting pressure and the safeties helping over the top will determine how far the Pack go. Hyde and Gunter can press at the line but if the rush doesn't get home it will lead to big plays as those two guys aren't very fast and the safeties have really struggled helping on corner routes over the top all season long. Everyone that is left healthy in the Packers secondary excels up near the line of scrimmage but all struggle over the top. Capers has quite a job ahead of him. I hope he knocks the shit out of the Giant WRs at the LOS and has Burnett near the LOS with Dix and Brice as your deep safeties while praying the rush gets to Eli quickly.

Maybe you should have watched the game before making your comment.
Our patchwork secondary held the Lions to 3 points in the second half on their homefield. I'm not counting the garbage time TD. Stafford is usually somewhat inaccurate but he threw a good ball in spite of his injury. Our guys played well in spite of real injuries not excuses like Stafford's finger. The Lions were beat on both sides of the ball, period, end of story, case closed. Thanks, Since '61

Yes the Lions were beat on both sides of the ball all game long but the secondary showed opportunities for the Lions to win despite being beating in all other phases of the game. I give credit to the way the secondary held up and played tough but Stafford's finger was a factor in that whether you and your rose colored glasses want to believe it or not.

My takeaway is that we find ways to win games. We have not had that for a while. MM deserves his due for this run of 6 wins in 6 elimination games. Rodgers and the offense are playing lights out. Our defense is doing enough to hold our opponents down so Rodgers can build a lead. We will go as far as our OL takes us. If they keep Rodgers clean and maintain an effective run game our defense is playing well enough to hold a lead and we can close out games by running out the clock. After this 6 game must win run where we held the lead for almost all of the 6 games except for a little while in Detroit this team is ready for a deep run in the playoffs. No excuses. Go Pack Go! Rollins, randle and gunther couldnt make any other team.
I dix see davn house and casey hayward are having very good years. Cheap ball dont work with skill players positions.

House has played less than a third of the snaps on a team like the Jaguars, yes a real good season. Go back to your Viking site and complain about them. They had their chance and completely collapsed when it mattered the most. With Rollins, Randall and Gunther we beat them like a drum on both sides of the ball. Just because your Viqueens haven't been in the league since the '70s don't waste our time with your inaccurate troll comments here.

House is almost certain to get cut during the off-season, or forced to take a big pay cut. He played 272 snaps for Jacksonville, all early. Last week, he played 2 snaps on defense but was a major contributor on STs with 15 snaps. Not what you want for $6M per year. The only reason Jacksonville might keep him after getting a pay cut is because Prince Amukamara is a FA.

Despite the hail Mary, this was one game they did not hang on to win.. They seized the game in the 4th and played like Champs.

Rip, Allison, Brice and of course Montgomery bring something much different to this year's playoffs. That and Arods level of intensity have me being far more optimistic than I have been in years.

GPG. Annilhate the Giants.
