Packers release QB Kurt Benkert

Benkert spent the entire 2021 season on the Packers’ practice squad, appearing in one game as a COVID-19 replacement.

The Packers announced the release of quarterback Kurt Benkert late Friday afternoon.

Benkert commented on the news via his Twitter account.

Danny Etling, who will turn 28 before training camp, must have made an impression this offseason for the Packers to move on from Benkert, who showed promise last preseason.

Can we start debating Danny Etling's future now?

He hasn't replaced AR yet, he must be a BUST!

I'm glad people are taking this so well. It's not every day you cut a future hall of famer.

Forget Etling! If we don't bring back Tim Boyle, the entire season will be lost! Trade Jaire and a first round pick for Tim Boyle!

Touchdown Jesus was also cut today. With the current WR situation in GB - it would not be a surprise to see him return to GB. Welcome Home buddy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cutting Benkert is a mild surprise. But the timing of the cut is intriguing. GB must have someone lined up to be added. The ONLY two names that come to mind for me - are WR Kumerow, or Kevin King. I suspect we will know tomorrow.

They'll need another camp arm, yes.

If its between King or Kumerow, I'd bet on King getting signed.

He already got resigned by the Bills. It was just a cap maneuver.

Really thought Benkert had a real shot of going the practice squad route. But what do we fans know?

I felt MLF should have used Benkert, on STs, as a holder for Crosby. I think he would have been better than Bojorquez, there. Too bad Benkert wasn't an LS. That's where Crosby's woes on FGs began.

Oh man, the "Benkert is better than Love" wankers gotta be big mad right now. With that being said, Benkert is a class act and I wish him well.

Surprise for sure. The J-S folks say the Packers run with 4 QB's during camp, someone else coming on board?

Didn’t I read somewhere that Danny already has a SB ring? With the Patriots I think. Perhaps the team wants some experienced QB to help mentor the room? Getsy is gone and TC might need another voice to help the development of Love.

Packers has better than Getsy - old school veteran who was definitely huge part of AR development (and go back and see how he helped to improve Murray from year 1 to 2).

Why would Packers bring anybody else...

Good. He stinks. Won't EVER do anything in the NFL.
Waste of roster space.

And yet another contender for our 3rd straight HOF QB bites the dust.

For a quick review the former contestants include:
Matt Flynn - out of the league
Scott Tolzien - Assistant QB coach in dallas
Deshone Kizer - Currently unsigned FA
Brent Hundley - Ravens backup QB
Blake Bortles - Currently unsigned FA
Tim Boyle - Lions backup QB
Kurt Benkert - Currently unsigned FA

Who's next is anyone's guess. Thanks, Since '61

Remember the days when we had Matt Hasselbach, Ty Detmer, Mark Brunell, Aaron Brooks, Doug Pederson as backup QBs? Even Kurt Warner had a cup of coffee. We really got away from quality QB depth under TT for some reason. Hopefully Love reverses that trend.

Agree completely 13Times. Wolf and especially Holmgren knew what they were doing at the QB position. At least then we had backups who could actually complete a pass.

Love could be the guy to reverse the trend but we won't know until he gets a chance to play/start regularly during the regular season. Time will tell. Stay safe. Thanks, Since '61
