Packers reportedly set to move on from P Corey Bojorquez

Bojorquez ranked 11th in the NFL with a 46.5-yard average – the best mark in Packers history.

Per Bill Huber, the BoJo Bomb era is set to be over in Green Bay.

From Bill:

Corey Bojorquez, an unrestricted free agent, will not be brought back. The Packers simply don’t have the cap space for a veteran punter. Acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams after training camp, he played under the fourth-year minimum salary of $920,000. Heading into Year 5, Bojorquez will cost $1.035 million. A rookie, by comparison, will cost $705,000.

As Bill notes, Bojorquez began the year strong but he became much more eratic once the the weather turned. Throw in his shaky holding and it's not a big surprise to see the Packers choose to move on.

All that said, Bojorquez ended the season ranked 11th in the NFL with a 46.5-yard average – which is the best mark in Packers history.

The coverage units will now be overhauled by new special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia to go along with a new punter.

Sad state of affairs if 11th in the NFL is the best in Packers history. I know there are many factors, including the fact that times have changed, but that is still sad.

Maybe I'm expecting too much from our STs Coordinator, but we seriously need to get better fast. No more excuses.

46.5 is the best in Packer history, not ranking as the 11th best average in the league.

Yes I know... He was ranked 11th in the league last season, and it's the best average ever for a Packer. That is sad in my opinion...

It’s perhaps tougher to punt in Lambeau more often than in many places later in the season, but I agree that it would be nice to have a gem. I’m still irked by TT:MM releasing Ryan. He wasn’t perfect but what followed was not pretty. Bojo was better than we have had since. I hope we can find better but our history and cap makes me doubt.

You have to remember, GB is no match for domed teams. Half of their season is played in brutal conditions. Find me the top 10 punters, I will bet money more than half of them belong to domed teams.

It looks like they'll save a bit over a whopping $300,000 over a rookie punter. I'd say this wasn't a money saving move, but a sign they weren't happy with him.

normally, i'd agree...

but the packers cap situation for the foreseeable future is so poor due to the rodgers contract and all the creative book keeping required to make it possible, this may be a financial decision over $300k

The Packers haven't had a decent punter since Craig Hentrich.

Well, we have three seventh-round picks....Of course I'm not sure what I'm talking about and know nothing of his holding skills, but how about Blake Hayes of Illinois? Some people don't like using draft picks on punters, but hey, this guy is a winner; and if we can find a punter than can actually last a while here, it would be worth it just to get rid of the continual headache and revolving door we've become accustomed to here.

Matt Araiza, San Diego State

Araiza has the biggest leg in the draft, there’s no doubt about that. Averaging over 51 yards per punt is pretty insane, and landing 37 kicks inside the 20 yard line is also impressive. Araiza is a converted soccer player with a fast and powerful kick who can truly flip the field, but he still needs a lot of work on his accuracy. While accuracy is easier to coach than power, his propensity to outkick his coverage and ridiculous number of touchbacks make it hard for a team to take him on as a rookie. If he spends some time on a practice squad and gets good coaching, he could turn into one of the best punters in the league. But he really needs to convert some of his power into extra hang time and work on controlling his spin off his kicks.

2021 Stats
79 punts: 51.2 yards per punt, 37 inside-20, 15 touchbacks, 17 fair catches (21.5%)

Pretty damn good athlete too from what I have read. I thought I read that he has a big leg for kickoffs too. If he is an adequate holder as well I say sign him up.

Maybe if we had a 6th round pick we could draft him. I doubt he'll be available in the 7th when we pick.

The good thing about Hayes is we might be able to use him in the Redzone? 6' 5" 225 LBS

Lol

FYI - I have no problem spending a 7th round pick on a good punter. I just want a decent punter/holder!

The blocked punt for a TD against the 49ers didn't help.

A rookie can end up costing us a whole lot more than the difference of $300K. Much more.

Not so easy getting the ball down from the snap when there is that much uncertainty where the ball is going to end up from center. Didn’t this guy kick in Buffalo and New England? Seems like maybe something else is out there to me.

Yes, I thought one of the big pluses was being able to kick in cold weather. Guess doing it under pressure was the problem.

Well, Green Bay may have to do something drastic like make the holder from the 2nd string QB. Avoid the issues of mishandling snaps for FGs, and EPs. That way a punter could you know just punt.

Bingo! Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Get someone to do the job right, I dont give a crap what position he plays besides holder.

Use a WR, a S, a CB, a RB, a QB, I dont care! Just get it RIGHT!!!

Teams tend to avoid that now because of the restrictions on practice time under the recent CBAs. The kicking units are off doing their thing while the positional players practice theirs. A third QB is an option but teams seldom want them active in game day.

What did Gute give up for this guy? Hopefully just a low round choice. I remember when people were anointing Gute a genius for stealing him from the Rams. Then came the cold weather……

To be fair, he also had to improvise to deal with a number of bad snaps and penetration at times.

Packers bought a used car nobody wanted. he was key word CHEAP. Packers covet cheap to make up for giving the farm away to Rodgers. Better hope Rodgers can punt catch and rush the qb because this team is weaker then last year right now and no money for some top free agents hitting the market. the pack will wait til the 6th and select whichever punter is still available. he will be avg.

While Bojorquez did struggle in his final 6 games, he was having a great season up until that point. I guess the Packers think punters are a dime a dozen, so the revolving door continues. Perhaps Bisaccia wants his own punter to develop.

Either way the two lone bright spots on special teams, Burks and Bojorquez are now gone. If Bisaccia makes this an average unit, then he's a rockstar.

I'm sure most of it was ST poor blocking and hurrying his punts....Although pretty sure he caught the snap and took an extra step when it was blocked w/ SF in the playoffs.

Just curious, do the same trolls just troll all the time? Some of these so-called Packer fans are anything but. All they do is spout total BS, trying to provoke.

Just wondering if all this trolling is readily accepted or a painful by-product of being a Packer fan site?

I’m surprised by this. It’s true he struggled somewhat down the stretch, but it appears he has the ability to get better. A 300k savings—doesn’t make sense imo.

We don’t know what he was asking for. Reports are that they tried to bring him back but couldn’t fit him under the cap. Perhaps they can later if he’s still available.

Don't know why this is a surprise to anyone. In the playoff loss, if he would have taken one step and cut loose (as they are taught when punting from the end zone) instead of taking his normal steps, there would not be a conversation.

I want my punter to hit it long and with hang time if he’s not backed up. A punter in the end zone plans to kick fast and those kicks are less effective typically. Any punter needs some semblance of blocking. I’m not sure any punter adjusts to the complete absence there.

Didn’t he lead the league in punting when he was in Buffalo? The weather probably wasn’t the issue…
