Packers Roster Cuts Tracker for the 2022 NFL Season

Ongoing updates on today's Packers roster cuts. Check back for more additions to the list as they are made public.

Today is the fateful day that Brian "The Turk" Gutekunst derails the near-term NFL dreams of a group of hopefuls. Also, a reminder that today will end in an initial 53-man roster. Guys who make it today could easily be unemployed tomorrow after others become available on waivers.

As a reader, but rare contributor, I think I might just use this calm-before-the-storm moment to reiterate the big Thank You to all the beat writers on CHTV and to all the 'ordinary guys' who comment here. As a Packer fan living across the pond, I find it incredible that such a wonderful, self-produced site like this exists. The quality of coverage and writing is of a very high standard (as you all know), especially for a free platform! I'm not sure such an entity exists for any other sports team or, in fact, any arena of mutual interest. The respect shown by each commenter to one another is astonishing, especially when they have differing viewpoints. Of course, occasionally, things do get a little heated, but the self-policing kicks in quickly and normal order is restored. I've learned a ton from CHTV - Thank you all, and long live the site! GPG!

Many thumbs up Irelandseye! Your comment is outstanding! I found this site when I was living in Asia and kept track of my beloved Packers from afar until I returned home some years ago. You have done a superb job of describing this site and acknowledging the fine work done by Jersey Al and his team of contributors. Thank you CHTV from a former expat for keeping the Packer fires burning no matter where we roam.

I doubt he makes it to a PS. I am not one who thinks all these guys gets picked up but Heflin had a up hill battle once they took a DL in the 1st round. They would have to keep 6 or drop a draft pick to keep him. I think someone is going to get a decent rotational guy with him.

Winfree is the first real surprise for me. I like Heflin, I just couldn’t see him making it on. I hope we get both back on the PS. I never did get on board with the love for Thomas: statistics can be deceptive.

I could use a little help with the Math.

We have 85? guys and we have to trim to 53, but we can add 16 back on the practice squad? So it’s only around 15 guys that are gone for good? Do I have that about right?

Close. Rosters were already trimmed to 80 on the last cut, and the Packers were only at 78, so 25 more to cut.

And then players need to pass though waivers before they can be added back to practice squads, so any other team could claim a cut player with who isn't a 4 year veteran yet.

Thanks. So if our cuts clear waivers…as most of them will…we’re really only saying goodbye to about 10.

I think our Gameday 45 is pretty set, so that leaves us with about 24 guys who are on the 53 but inactive or on the PS.

I am surprised Winfree got cut but if he makes it to the PS he will be on the 53 at some point.

Wish Heflin would have made the cut. Understand why not…but he’s is going to have a solid pro career, hopefully as a Packer.

Have to think that Toure possibly forced them to keep him. He did play well. They possibly didn't want to lose him and felt they had better chance of losing him then Winfree.

I also do understand that Toure could still be cut.

No worries.

My thing with Toure is he did show up really well during the preseason. It makes sense to me why they would keep him. I think were probably afraid that he would get claimed if they let him go. There were talks after the draft some viewed him more as a 4/5th round player and they got him in the 7th. You never know but one of those teams could have taken a chance with him after seeing him play well in the preseason.

I could use a lil humble pie from now and then, at least that’s what she says…..lol….actually, I still think I will be correct. Even thou Toure has looked good, and I like him as a developmental prospect, there are other WR’s in the league have done very well in the pre-season and with more catches. I’m not too worried about losing him to another team as some are because I think he will pass waivers. Of course, those are stats, I’m sure if the Packers think they have a diamond in the rough they will keep him. Now comes the toughest choices.

I would add Slayton to the list as he had a pretty good preseason. I suspect all three will be placed on the practice squad assuming they clear waivers.

Obviously the Packers have elected to keep just five defensive lineman or either Heflin or Slayton would have made the team. The next question will be six or seven wide receivers. If seven, Toure and Rodgers are safe, if six, one of those will soon join this list. The last major question will be O-line. No one has been cut here yet and they can't keep them all. Wonder who of Hanson, Jones, and Walker don't make it. Assuming Bahk, Jenkins, Nijman, Myers, Runyon, Newman, Rhyan and Tom are safe, only one should make the 53 if they hold to their traditional nine O-linemen.

Entirely possible Heflin or Slayton could get resigned after clearing waivers. There may be players GB wants to protect from initial cutdowns that they think could clear if released later this week. Or they could be waiting to see if someone intriguing gets cut from another team.

Its not shocking that either player got cut. But out of all the moves so far these 2 are the biggest surprises.

I thought they would keep 6 DL, and Heflin is a guy I could have seen them keep. He played well, and could have contributed.

The biggest reason why I'm surprised with Winfree is with how much 12 has talked about how he has been good and how he can help the team. That part of it is why its more surprising.

They did keep 6 d-linemen. Clark, Reed, Lowry, Wyatt, Slayton, and Jonathan Ford. Ford's size made him less expendable cuz he gives them added beef for goalline and short yardage defense.

Bad Idea. Need 4 RB's on the 53 if ML is running both Jones and Dillon on the field at the same time. Not if, but when one is hurt the next man up will not be prepared to take over on the fly. ML strikes again.

Maybe LaFleur's planning a track meet vs the newbie coach and let the D tee-off. My own preference would be to open with a five-wide set(s) and expect to score. They probably bring Taylor back by Game Week.

I was as well.

Goodson as a 3rd RB definitely could have added something to the team. I get he was raw on special teams and his pass blocking needed work. But those are things he could have worked on. His ability as a runner and pass catcher definitely could have added to the offense.

Also LaFleur does a great job of using guys strengths. I am sure they could have found a way to get Goodson the ball in space rather then having him pass block every down.

So let's imagine the Packer's offense is in a single back set with Goodson as the running back. The defense shows blitz and now Goodson has to stay into block. Aaron Rodgers is now very nervous. He needs to improve his pass blocking before he can play.

Hey, our coaches are getting paid well too. Coach up a player with identifiable deficiencies and make us of the obvious skills that already shine. I am in favor of Goodson over AR8 by a wide margin.
AR8's lack of progress last year says as much about his willingness to work as it is his lack of playmaking skills.
Most all of us make a fraction of a 3rd round pick and a good share likely put in 9+ hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week for 48 or more weeks per year.
That's not asking too much of a rookie with a nice contract to work hard to improve, I don't care how tired you are.
thanks for letting me vent, best of luck to AR8, Goodson and the GBPkrs!

Still a lot of cut downs left, but so far:

I was rooting for Heflin to sneak in as a sixth d-lineman, I hope he clears waivers. I'd also like to see Slayton make the practice squad; if he and TJ Slaton can continue improving, having the Slaytwins out on the field at the same time would be gold. Would be nice to have Winfree and Goodson clear waivers also. With some development, Goodson could be a solid player.

The position I've been most concerned about, depth-wise, is safety (not ignoring OLB and TE), even before the run on injuries. Jaquiski Tartt was released by the Eagles. Could be he went into a defensive scheme that he didn't mesh with, or he's declining. I hope its the former. If he would sign around the veteran minimum, he's better than any of the backups by a significant margin. I'm hesitant about Rasul at safety as there's too many examples in the last 10+ years of playing defensive backs out of position to the team's, and the player's, detriment.

I think Douglas will move all over the field, including occasionally to safety. I get the concern but Savage has taken snaps at nickel, so I could see Douglas sliding back deep in those cases. He has really good instincts, plays well with his man in front of him, and is an absolute ball hawk.

To me, Douglas has too small of a sample size playing well in his career to justify playing him all over. Keep him where he has had success. I do hope you're right tho. He's a ball hawk for sure, best hands out of the DBs.

Fair concern for sure, but I think the backfield will be moving around a LOT. It's more likely he will be switching between slot and outside depending on Jaire and who he is matched up on, but I don't hate Douglas taking snaps at safety, and that might actually fit his strengths more than nickel CB

Watching some of the preseason game against the Chiefs yesterday, it seems Goodson has that "wow" factor of burst and quickness and elusiveness that really is uncommon even among the elite athletes at running back in the NFL.

I’m not sure I count Leavitt as a FS in reality. I’ve no real idea what Carpenter is, but if anything I’d lean towards SS for both in terms of how they profile. That’s if he’s not really an ILB I don’t know enough about Abernathy either, but I’d guess he might be more promising as a FS. I’d not be shocked if there is a claim or signing. Abernathy might have promise, but the rest are STers at this point.

What did Carpenter do, or didn't do on the coverage units during the Summer Scrimmage? I liked him as a designated Sp Teams guy from his draft profile and viewing G-Tech games. He can be a slot LB and muscle TEs.
He just has to get used to the Pro Game. Abernathy is the guy with instincts. He is a Free Safety. Savage can come low as a slot CB in certain packages. He fills the sixth CB role for now. I would trade for another CB, or watch the Wire. Barry has a lot of flexibility and they listen to Jerry Gray. No interest in King returning.

Given the moves made so far I think they keep 10 OL. The question is are they afraid of losing some of them or afraid Bak and Jenkins aren't quite ready to start the season.

Would not be surprise to see one of them on IR after the 53 is decided. Its only 4 weeks compared to 6 if they left them on PUP to begin season.

Practice squads can be assembled starting 11 am central time tomorrow. All non vested players must pass through waivers before then (less than 3 seasons on a roster or in season IR as a rough rule of thumb). Any claimed must be added to the 53 tomorrow and never become FAs,. Vested players waived today are FAs, but can’t be signed till tomorrow to any roster or PS.

Also keep in mind there is a pecking order to gather a waived player. For example the Lions get to pick second and so on. So even if you like a player who was cut by another team you cant grab that person unless they got through the pecking order called waivers. Last it doesnt mean that person wants you even though you are interested. Thus, 16 people who were mostly here will remain the other nine are on their own.
864 football players are in limbo right now as we write this. FOr many of those its the end of the road.

" Last it doesnt mean that person wants you even though you are interested."

The rights of a player who is subject to waivers is bound to the waiver claim. They can elect not to report, but the claiming team still owns their rights until they cut or release them.

I can't think of a player in recent memory who was a waiver claim at the 53-man cutdown who refused to report. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Actually the only thing that might save some of our guys like Goodson and Heflin - is that they can only be signed to somebody's active roster - not to some other teams Practice squad - I also have hope for Winnfree - he would be a guy that if we have an injury could be promoted and would step right in and be able to produce.

Thank you for answering the question I had above... At this point- a cut player would have to be signed to another team's active roster.

Aboslutely. Anymore, with weekly activations and such, that PS is almost an extension of the active roster. The Packers will likely overpay to keep those key guys they want to retain on the PS.

Here are my thoughts:

Heflin and Slayton: I never thought the Packers would keep 6 D-lineman, but both Heflin and Slayton showed what they can do in the preseason and looked good. Hopefully they both go on the PS. Reed and Lowry are free agents next year, so maybe one or both can make the roster then.

Winfree: I am a bit surprised by this one, although hopefully he gets signed to the PS. He could make the roster next year with Watkins being a free agent and Cobb, I think, will retire. Although, as a Huskers fan, I’m happy for Toure.

Davis: It’s unfortunate he was injured, although I am happy for Abernathy, who I think should be our true #3 safety. Leavitt and Carpenter I hope make it because both are good on STs. The Packers could also give other safeties like Logan Ryan or Jaquiski Tartt a call if they need better depth.

Goodson: Sad, but I saw it coming. There were lots of other undrafted Goodson out there, so I’m pretty sure he’ll be on the PS.

I think the Packers should try to get Hamilton, Gafford, Etling, Thomas, Menet, and one of Becker or Mack on their PS too.

Looks like we’ll be rolling with Ahmed to start the season, which I’m completely fine with.

The worst part of roster cuts for readers is first seeing everyone's (Tom, Dick, and Harry included) final 53 lineup. The next issue that gets old fast is when a vet receiver gets cut from any team and how the Packers should trade or sign them in a hurry, because they won't be available for long. This includes guys who have a career reception number of 25 or another guy has total receiving yardage of 125 yards.
I send a big thanks for the writers and responders of this site for not pointing out that WR just cut from team XYZ should be brought in since the Packers need them.

Taryn,
Has it right about wait until tomorrow. I know this is a time of year where we all have favorites being cut but frankly most of them will never be starters in the league. There may be an exception or two. While we may lose a couple of players with Gutey at the helm we might actually gain with an added player or two who was cut. It is best to wait until things settle down in the next day or so.

Having said that I really am not surprised by anyone who was cut....yet!

Heflin and Slayton - both good back-up DL but no room for them. Hopefully at least one makes it back to PS. Was hoping someone was willing to give a conditional draft choice pre-cuts.

Winfree - decent & steady player but really no upside for the Packers. Toure was a much better decision. If Winfree can be signed back to the PS good. Again, I just don't see anyone out there who is going to do handstands because he is available. There is nothing exceptional about Winfree.

Abernathy - I hope he makes it. Based on the little of him I have seen he appears to have that 'Rasul Douglas' thing going for him. You know....that innate 'anticipation' that only some players have. You cannot teach it! You either have it or you don't. Time will tell about Abernathy.

Goodson - like many of you I liked Goodson and hoped he would make the 53. Not because of this year as they do not need him. I really like Hill, but Goodson would be a great asset. I figured Taylor would make it over Goodson. If Goodson can make it back to the PS and add some strength and work at pass pro he is a keeper. He just isn't ready to contribute this year. Next year, if A. Jones is not on the team due to the $20 million guys like Hill & Goodson would really help make up for Jones being gone.

Here is the guy I really do not understand why the Packers do not risk cutting him and then adding him back to the PS because no one is going to sign him. With Tonyan back the Packers could cut Tyler Davis, TE and then re-sign him to the PS. By doing this it would save a spot for someone like Goodson, Heflin, or Slayton.

Interestingly, Caleb Jones & Rasheed Walker have not been cut....YET!

I see that but so far keeping Walker. To me Walker making the 53 would be maybe the biggest surprise of any based on draft selection, and the fact he hardly played. If he makes it let's hope he is the real deal needing some seasoning.

Some people were picking Walker to make the roster based on his performance in that last preseason game and because he is considered to have a high ceiling. It was probably a close decision between him and Caleb Jones.

Jones has looked good, but there must be doubts about him because of his size. He could easily gain back the weight he lost, and it seems to me like a guy that size who moves as quickly as he does would be vulnerable to injury. There is probably a reason why you don't see players that size in the NFL.

Heflin, Slayton, Gafford, Davis, and both of the Joneses would be nice to get through to the PS. Not sure that will be possible and wonder what's on the waiver wire (suggestions I've seen haven't been too enticing). Maybe Becker, Etling, Goodson, and Hamilton for depth. I suspect that the rest will come from the street. Not much else to see up there, even for development.

Out of the 24 players currently on the chuck list I never heard of 14 of them. So far there is no loss. We’ll see which ones make it back to the PS.

With 16 players on the PS this season we’ll probably have a net loss of 10-15 players. We should be fine.

That expanded PS is a big deal. I recall it at 8 for a long time.

You have 22 starters
You have 20 backups
3 Special Teams Unit.

Next are the 8 guys who are inactive, but on the 53. and then 16 practice squad guys.

That's essentially 69 players you get to start the season with. The guys who were the 70th best player aren't going to make a real big difference here or anywhere this year. I wish them all well. It's a great way for a young man to make a couple of bucks.

While many have commented in recent weeks, and they're right, that there are few examples of waived players getting poached by other teams before making their way to the practice squad, I think that changes this season. 25 players are on the list above, are there 16 players among them that should make the practice squad? Maybe, but with six extra spots this year, I think teams are looking for gems elsewhere, more so than in past seasons.

Teams. can also keep more of their own "gems" who are familiar with their offense/defense and more ready to step in as needed. I mean we're talking about 3rd level backups and developmental projects. Most of them are not going to be ready to contribute and they have to put them on the actual roster to claim them.

As fans we watch preseason games, watch practices, and read other peoples thoughts/observations. We don’t see any of the behind the scenes stuff like attitude/very active film study/putting in extra work. This is a super bowl capable team and you do not want bad, or lazy, apples. Most of these players have gotten by on athletic ability most their lives and some are not willing to put in what it takes to become a good NFL player.
Sometimes that talented player who is forced to move on has shown he doesn’t want to adjust to the NFL requirements .
