Packers Select Romeo Doubs, Wide Receiver in 2022 NFL Draft - Round 4

The Green Bay Packers selected Nevada's Romeo Doubs in the 4th round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Romeo Doubs, Nevada, Wide Receiver

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

6'2" 201 lbs.
32 7/8" arms
10 1/8" hands
13 bench press reps. No other athletic testing completed.

CAREER NOTES:

"Former Nevada receivers coach Eric Scott coached Doubs (pronounced dubs) at Jefferson High School in Los Angeles and knew him from Snoop Dogg's Youth Football League. Scott took over recruiting for Nevada in 2017 and made sure to sign Doubs. He returned an 80-yard punt for a touchdown on his first collegiate touch, eventually starting nine of 13 games in his true freshman season (43-562-13.1, two TDs receiving; 1-22-22.0 kick returns; 6-107-17.8, one TD punt returns). Doubs was an honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference pick and the team's Most Valuable Player in 2019, leading the squad with 14.8 yards per reception (44-649, four TDs; 8-86-10.8 punt returns in 11 games, eight starts). MWC coaches voted him first-team all-conference in 2020 as he ranked eighth in the FBS with 111.3 receiving yards per game (58-1,002-17.3, nine TDs; 11-100-9.1 punt returns in nine starts). Doubs was a first-team All-MWC selection in 2021, as well, after leading the Wolf Pack with 80 receptions, 1,109 receiving yards (13.9 per catch) and 11 touchdowns while effectively returning punts (12-170-14.2). He opted out of the team's bowl game to prepare for the NFL draft." -- Chad Reuter, NFL Network.

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

"Will check the boxes for height, weight and speed, but tightness in his lower half limits the upside. Doubs has been a productive, high-volume target with speed to separate deep but he's a linear route-runner who will struggle to elude NFL press and separate from tight man coverage over the first two levels. His toughness, ball skills and special teams potential increase his chances of earning a backup role." - Lance Zierlein, NFL Network.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Doubs finished an excellent career at Nevada with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. His athletic testing is a mystery as he sustained a knee injury at the NFL Combine. At this point, he’s a dynamic athlete on film (especially speed-wise) with some work to do in the finer points of playing the receiver position. His speed is evident on film. Doubs does an excellent job getting stacked and getting open down the field but struggles to shake defenders in the short and intermediate areas. He’s very competitive at the catch point. Doubs was an adequate run blocker, but you’d like to see a little more attitude from a receiver with his size.

COMMENTARY:

Doubs is a well-rounded receiver who can make plays at all levels while also offering a serious deep threat. He could provide an immediate replacement for Marquez Valdes-Scantling and has the potential to develop into a primary target over time. Doubs’ 20 touchdowns across the 2020 and 2021 seasons also show his potential upside in the redzone. He also fits Green Bay’s preference for bigger, physical receivers.

Solid, need meets value pick at this point in the draft. Packers always seem to have good luck with ultra-productive college WR.

Like this pick at this point. His experience and added refinement might actually play him ahead of Watson, initially.

Special teams contributor. Team leader. High character guy.

Yup, Doubs is fine. Hanson makes me nervous. Zach Tom at 140 as the backup OC? Slot corner? Safety? TE (bummed Kolar and Ferguson were selected)? Enagbare still out there?

Zach Tom it is at 140. Another pretty solid pick. About where he was expected to go.

" Zach Tom at 140 as the backup OC? Slot corner? Safety? "

I think he's a little slow for slot corner or safety, but maybe he's game.

"Enagbare still out there?"

Yeah, but does he make it 28 more picks?

I imagine a 5-10, 180 lb slot receiver looking up and seeing 305 Lbs of slot corner lined up to press his release...

They could both be starters. Watson has better hands. Lazard the possession guy.

Lazard is best suited to be that 3rd down possession type, definitely agree.

That scouting summary makes him sound more like MVS than I think he is. He’s actually pretty sudden. Here’s one I find more fitting with film:

His video shows him playing more physically and bigger than MVS. Not afraid to cross the middle and catch in traffic (although ARod doesn't like to throw a lot of those to anyone not named Adams). I like this kid.

A guy who'd been touted on this site. He meets the physical parameters (over 6 feet, over 200 lbs) and has some vertical speed. I've seen him make some nice high point catches, so there's that.

Math: Watkins, Lazard, Cobb, Rodgers, Watson, Doubs. That'd be 6 on the 53, one inactive on gameday. Less than two months ago, there were lamentations and predictions of doom. Now? I'm looking at a pretty good group of WRs.

I like the Watkins/Doubs double dip in this draft, and I'm looking forward to watching these guys over the next four years. I like Rhyan and Tom. I was surprised at the 1-2 selection of two defensive studs, but in retrospect, I shouldn't have been. The Packers have a long and demonstrable history of preferring defensive players with their first round picks and it happened again, twice.

The Watson /Wyatt thing only makes sense to me if they really, really liked Wyatt. I mean, they had to know when they picked at 28 that Watson would be gone by 53, and Wyatt probably would be too. So they took Wyatt anyway and then used both seconds to essentially get the second pick on the second day.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

@Greengold. You had Velus Jones at #22, and I said that I"d bet a cold Pabst that he'd be closer to 122 than 22. That would put 72 at the halfway point, and Jones was taken at #71, so you were less wrong than I was and I owe you a beer.

Injuries will happen and I’m not ruling out Winfree for anyone who recalls what he was doing last summer. The good thing is that, within that we have a potential punt and kick returner or two and gunner perhaps with real speed. Is it great no, two recievers with upside isn’t a guarantee of adequate replacement. I do really like their upside. Doubs has to want it though.

I took the Labrador to the vet at Noon. I return to the Draft and feel totally satisfied. The guy has hit all my marks with TWO WRs with speed and skillsets for the New Passing Game; TWO OTs that were three-four year starters, not projects ; hit the DT from Rd One who can go from nose to six tech and a versatile guy in Quay Walker who is also multiple from MKE to Edge. His Best Draft, to date. They saw the weaknesses on the roster, accepted the reality and made Outstanding picks.

GG I too lost my bet with you. I predicted V. Jones would not go before pick 100. Kudos to you. I agree with Leatherhead, our WR group is looking much better. I have to toot my own horn though. From my April 26th big board, I identified Christian Watson (53), Zach Tom (132), and Romeo Doubs (140) so far. I enjoyed The Doubs video, more size & speed. I have had my eye on Zach Tom for weeks! I am looking for Edge Amare Barno in the 5th. Great draft, keep it going Gute!

Responding to everyone who made a Velus Jones draft position pick guess:

Perhaps (probably) the recent run of exorbitant WR contracts spooked GM’s.

WR seems like it’s becoming the new LT in the NFL pay scale stakes and this is influencing draft skill set preferencing?

Regarding the Packers selections, Watkins and Doubs seem to be a complimentary pair that bring missing skillsets to the Packers WR capabilities - I like the pairing (sure, I like other pairings better, but the draft didn’t fall that way for the Packers).

I'm just happy with the success rate of the Gute first rounders and seconds on D. The last few years of TT Defense's first drafts, didn't go so well.

Gute is obviously getting guys that he likes, because this is his third pick who was in for a pre-draft visit.

We needed a player who can stretch the field, and the ST potential is a bonus. Hopefully he'll become our next MVS with a little higher catch %age. It's a logical pick and the selection falls where most experts thought it would. Good job, Gute.

Doubs can run the WCO routes and was all Air Raid for the Wolfpack. 10"-0 Mitts like Watson, 4.47- 4.5 , 40. He has good footwork with the release. Has to bring the ball in, then run. The guy is a four-year starter. Strong should have gone in the third. They are afraid of his lead feet, but he can get better coaching in the Pros to work on pocket presence.

The B- was a scouts grade. I would have taken Austin III like the Steelers did. But I understand they need a Gunner. Doubs had a foot operation.

He will fill the Devante route tree. These are not Big Ten guys from the Wisconsin Badgers seeing 2-3 balls per game. They are well-schooled in the Passing Game. He and Watson know how to screen and block for RBs in the outside zone.

He plays much more over the middle. Ignore that summary, it paints a misleading picture. Tougher, more inclined to contact and contested catches with more wiggle. Not a finished product yet and he’s going to need to work on consistency and focus. If he does this could be a very good pick.

No idea how fast he is really because he ran a 4.5 at his individual pro day recently but the suggestion was that he wasn’t fully recovered, just enough to run.

I give him credit for running it.

A fully healthy Olave refused to run the 3 cone drill.

I’d like to see a rule for the draft that all candidates complete all tests - or the very least a set grouping for their respective position group.

Volume WR with back to back 1000 yd seasons. Averaged 14.7 on PR in 2021 with a 4 yr average PR 12.5… High value at pick 132.

Ranked #94 Overall in Ourlads Top 300 Players for 2021. Apparently he can do it all, run any route. One of the few #1WR candidates from this draft. He’s certainly one who flew under my radar. Glad GUTEHEIST had my back on him…! LOL. Looking like another steal.

I'll take him! Gutey went in 4th exactly how I wanted him to go. A WR with 1st pick in 4th followed by another big OL. I have liked Zach for weeks and always ended up drafting him great value!

I will tell you is there ANYWAY Gutey can pull Mercilus away from that barbecue grill? Some seem to think we will be adding a veteran WR but I'm thinking we need a veteran Edge similar to Mercilus on the cheap. Who is still out there that may provide value?

If Gute could somehow pull that one out, that D would have almost everything. Checked out his bbq show, dude seems really happy doing it and the food looks legit. I think I heard him say, he was going to even move the show to game day, sadly I don't see it Still Gute has months to wear him down and the first thing I'd offer is no training camp period, see you week 1.

I suspect initially his role will be punt/kick returner. He shows some knack for it, certainly more than the current options. Kick-punt returning in college translates to the pro game quite easily.

I love the Watson and Doubs picks. I just don't understand why people keep comparing the WRs we add, or could potentially add, to Adam's and MVS. Replacing Adam's production with 1 WR is unlikely at best. And MVS was an okay WR who was mainly a deep threat. It would be nice if Watkins, Watson, or Doubs could fill Adam's role as the #1 but I'm not holding my breath. And I don't even want another WR like MVS who is a 1 trick pony. That said, I think Gute did a fine job with getting 2 talented rookie Wrs with good potential and adding a low-risk, high-reward vet in Watkins. I'm excited to see Rodgers go to work with this group of WRs which he should be able to spread the ball around to and keep defenses guessing. Along with their willingness to block in the run game with team mentalities. Overall I believe our WR position is now better than it was last year. Only time will tell. In Gute we trust.

Barring injuries I don't see him beating out guys like Lazard, Cobb, or Sammy in year one. He definitely has potential and a place and in year 2 depending on Lazard and Cobb's contracts could be a big contributor. This season definitely a ST's contributor.

Talk about a run on WR's in the 3rd-round which cemented my feelings there were a lot of good WR's available in round 3 & 4.

125. Erik Ezukanma
132. Romeo Doubs
137. Calvin Austin
148. Khalil Shakir
163. Kyle Philips

To tell you how much better Gutey and company are assessing WR talent my favorite WR's after say the top 8 or so on the board were the last three above. I had them rated better than Romeo...LOL! I am very excited to watch Romeo and see how he does.

I had Ezukanma and Doubs mid, and Weston and Toure late.

Curious who's on your beginning and eventual active WR list?
This is mine. Maybe beginning of year, but definitely by mid year.

Lazard, Cobb, Watkins, Watson, Doubs, Toure.

Sorry Amari, you're out. However, may depend on who gets the ST returner role. If Toure, Amari is out. If Doubs, maybe Amari is on active roster spot.
