Packers Select Sean Clifford, QB in 2023 NFL Draft - Round 5

Sean Clifford, Penn State, Quarterback

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

6'2", 220 pounds, 4.59 40 yard. dash

CAREER NOTES:

Clifford started all 13 games in 2021, garnering honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference honors (261-428-61.0%, 3,107 yards, 21 TDs, eight INTs passing; 99-163-1.6, two TDs rushing). He was also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy (also known as the Academic Heisman). Clifford became Penn State's second four-time team captain in 2022, receiving honorable mention all-conference honors again by starting all 13 games (226-351-64.4%, 2,822 yards, 24 TDs, seven INTs, 69-176-2.6, five TDs rushing). He was the Rose Bowl Offensive MVP (16-21-76.2%, 279 yards, two TDs) as well as a finalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award. Clifford set several Penn State career records, including passing yards (10,661) and yards of total offense (11,734).

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

A real leader as a four year starter and four time captain at Penn State. Runs the RPO well and makes the short and intermediate throws well. Throws well to the middle of the field but lacks the elite arm strength to throw near the sidelines or deep. That's why he was still available in the fifth round and didn't go higher in the draft. Is mobile and does a good job of throwing on the run and escaping pressure. Needs to improve his accuracy and footwork but that can happen with coaching.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Brian Gutekunst found his backup quarterback. He is a smart and tough quarterback who with some coaching, can develop into Jordan Love's backup quarterback and be a reliable player.

COMMENTARY:

We expected the Packers to select a backup on day three and Brian Gutekunst got his man in Clifford. He will need some time to develop his game but should become a steady backup with the right coaching.

Mostly thought to be a UDFA or 7th at best. Great character guy, but an odd pick with a so so arm. Doug Pederson? QBs with better arms will not get drafted.

Can you explain the logic of drafting a QB this year? If JL10 disappoints is he going to be benched? I can't imagine that. God forbid he goes down to injury we have 2 backups already, right?

This QB seems surprisingly good, nothing against him, but I saw big bodied receivers and DBs with 4.33 40 speed still available

I can explain the logic.

We don't have a viable backup QB on the roster.

I sound like a broken record, but Danny Etling is a camp arm.

Rock solid person and a leader. Good college QB with some potential. Barring injury he could be one of those 10 year backups who can step in and win an occasional game when needed. Solid pick, welcome to Green Bay!

Brother, can't you just feel the anxiety growing amongst all the Love haters?

Every day we get closer to the start of the 2023 season, they get more and more anxious, nervously worrying that Love might prove to be the right decisions.

It's freakin' glorious. LOL.

CHTV draft guide seems underwhelmed with this QB.

IN A NUTSHELL:
Sean Clifford played in a lot of games for Penn State as a four-year starter and five-year contributor for the Nittany Lions. Despite a solid 2022 season with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions, Clifford is generally looked at as a limited passer with below-average arm talent and below- average accuracy outside the hash marks, as evidenced by his unimpressive 61% career completion percentage. He is at his best working the middle of the field and possesses nice touch on his passes. However, outside of that and some nice RPO work, he is limited as a prospect and may serve strictly as a practice squad player.

Tom clements will have his work cut out for him. Thanks, Since '61

Yes, his career was 61% completion, but the most important year was his last and he was 65%. Every year he seemed to get better. If his arm isn’t a cannon, maybe he doesn’t make it to a starter role, but that doesn’t limit him from becoming a quality back up in the NFL.

The reality is he beat out Will Levis and he has shown to win a lot of games so he does a lot of things right. Don’t think the Packers took him in the 5th round to be a practice squad player.

From a physical standpoint, this guy is one of the fastest, most agile QBs in the draft. You can build a guy's arm strength, you can improve mechanics, you can improve decision making.....but it's really hard to make somebody a better runner.

I don't see him as any kind of a contributor this year, but that's OK. Keep him on the practice squad and see what we have next year.

I just watched 19:20 of highlight reel and couldn't find any weakness. Finds the open man and the last couple years our passes have mostly been within 20 yards anyway. His numbers were padded by some serious YAC including by a couple TEs drafted by other teams, but that includes a lot of contested catches that he placed very well.

Not afraid to throw a long 50/50 ball, whether that's a plus or a minus Idk but only the ones that worked made it into his highlight reel.

Nice run on a flea flicker, when's the last time we saw AR12 do that? Lots of other runs too, very intelligent, gets max yards while (usually) protecting his body. Saw him take a serious head on hit or two, if he was unfazed from those that bodes well.

Seems like a great backup I just don't understand taking a QB when there's 4.33 speed in DBs and big bodied receivers left on the board.

At this stage in the game, it's rare you see a QB's arm strength change significantly.

His arm is what it is at this point.

Hey, the guy had a great 3 cone……As a 5th year senior and a 4 X captain he improved every year and capped it off with an MVP Rose Bowl game. I think he’s worth a 5th rounder. He may turn out to be a very reliable back up for the Packers. Having a good back up QB is a very important position and one not to take lightly.

I may be among the few, but I like him. Will Levis couldn’t unseat him at PSU. Has athletic ability (9.04 RAS) other than some concerns about arm strength. As with all rookies they can work on that. He only needs to come in if Love gets hurt. Develop him and he could he future trade chip. GBay needs to get back to that philosophy.

CW….Tom Brady was said not to have good arm strength one of the major reasons he dropped to the 7th. Some of that can be developed. To be a solid back up QB doesn’t necessarily need to have a cannon. Obviously, he played in the BIG and won a lot of games so ability is there.

Ok, we did need another QB. No doubt about it. Yet didn’t we trade back in the second round to get him? Clements will definitely have his work cut out for him. Yet if he does have potential then Tom is the guy to help him do that. The kid has played a lot of college football.

No big deal. I watched Clifford extensively as my son graduated from Penn State. He is a developmental QB and will be a camp arm and backup. He can run an offense. Not spectacular. If he’s starting opening day it would be a big problem obviously. I still think they will be sifting the veteran market for a backup. Not sure who everyone wanted but this is about what we could expect.

Fair enough. But I was commenting on where I would be happy to get him, not on what some other people thought or wrote.

Personally, I don't think Clifford has an NFL arm, and I don't think any amount of coaching can change that.

Well, the Packers finally landed someone who came for a visit. I'm not surprised by the pick, as Tune and Bennett were already off the board.

From Sports Illustrated: "His best case scenario is a Taysom Hill-type role." Interesting, but that seems a bit of a stretch.

He's good at scrambling and making short throws, and his passing accuracy statistics reflect a lot of those short throws. Otherwise his accuracy can be quite off, and he has thrown a fair amount of INTs. Also needs to work on mechanics and throws off his back foot sometimes.

We'll see how he does in preseason.

--Poor build
--Skinny
--Lacks great physical stature and strength
--Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush
--Lacks a really strong arm
--Can’t drive the ball downfield
--Does not throw a really tight spiral
--System-type player who can get exposed if forced to ad lib
--Gets knocked down easily

Time will tell, but you never know. The above was Tom Brady's scouting report before the 2000 draft. I'm not about to judge Clifford just yet. I wish him luck! Welcome to Green Bay!

The Packers ought to look at this kid at QB:

QB Tyson Bagent - Shepherd University

6-3 213

Completed 69.9% of his throws last year.

Division II career record with 17,034 yards and 159 TD passes, the most of any quarterback at any level in NCAA history.

I'm wondering how much arm strength and accuracy can be developed in the NFL with good coaching as far as technique.
How does his arm strength compare to Tom Brady or Joe Montana?
***
Otherwise, in a backup QB for this season and beyond, it seems we would want a smart guy with good experience in college who is accurate in the short throws and can escape pressure.
We want a guy with field presence and game management and general competency.
Clifford seems to be that guy, somewhat of a veteran, through lots of reps with a major college program, who could step in as a backup in his rookie year.
***
Hey, maybe he's the next Bart Starr.
The NFL Draft is for dreaming, and this comparison seems at least possible, even if not probable, or even plausible.
There has to be some talent to make it in the NFL, but character can make up for a lot that is lacking.
As humans, we are more than our measurables, more than our statistics, more than our past.

I think there's no doubt the Packers see him as a backup with the potential to improve. His scrambling ability looks above average and while the arm is not a rocket, this is something he can work on. His most impressive trait seems to be his leadership abilities and has proven he can come through when he needs to as not every QB can take his team to a major Bowl game and win

I didn't realize the roster was so well set that we were now simply chucking around picks randomly at guys that would do little to improve the team. Let's instead focus in 'areas of need' with these later picks and draft a bunch of guys there -- hoping we catch a 'diamond in the rough'.

Basically, Rodgers plainly admits, "Yeah I knew the Packers were calling me - I saw the call records right there on my phone - but they didn't contact me by FACETIME, you see. So naturally, I refused to answer my f*&ckng phone, and I blame that on the Packers."

This guy seems almost like the prototypical backup QB. Solid, unspectacular, can run when the play breaks down. The Packers are showing confidence in Jordan Love by not drafting a QB who can compete with him anytime soon. I guess I'll take that as a good sign. I thought they would pick a QB with more upside, but I'm okay with this.

I did not like the pick at first but then I watched his highlight real and feel a lot better. He may not have an elite arm but he can make some really nice throws. Plus he is very athletic and can run. He's also a smart kid that should be able to learn the offense quickly and has proven he is a winner and a very good leader. Coaching can help improve his mechanics and accuracy. As a back up QB he does not really need to have elite arm strength anyway, he just needs to be able to run the offense effectively and make those shorter quick throws. I hope he proves to be a good back up QB and worth the 5th round pick or at least worth a trade in the future.
