Packers signing Blake Bortles

The former Rams and Jaguars quarterback has worked with Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

From Spoon:

Bortles spent last year with the Rams and had Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett calling plays for him as a starter down in Jacksonville, so he should be somewhat familar with the scheme the Packers are running.

With Aaron Rodgers expected to stay away from offseason workouts, the Packers will most likely need to sign at least two quarterabacks just to get through their on-field work. Bortles makes sense in that regard and could potentially take over the backup role if the Rodgers drama lasts into the regular season and Jordan Love is forced into the starting role.

UPDATE: Literally in the time it took to post this, ESPN reports that the Packers are indeed signing Bortles to a one year deal.

Oh, my. I'm sure it's not different anywhere else, but the Packer coaches sure like their ex-colleagues. Hopefully this is nothing more than a cheap insurance policy we'll never need to use. Looking at the bright side, Bortles was at the helm for a couple of Jags playoff wins (one of them with a big assist from Fournette)---so maybe if you give him a very good offense to work with (like the Packers) there is a sliver of hope. And hopefully those mechanics have improved (it's been a while since I've seen him play). I know, an awful lot of "hope" here....

First of all, they should never have let the Golden Boyle go to the Lions for a paltry 2.4 million. He was fully indoctrinated in the offense and could have mentored Love while Mr Rodgers sits out with his little hissy fit. Secondly; Bortles was a good move, cheap veteran, he’s been to the playoffs, played for Hackett, played in a similar scheme in LA also.
Solid recovery Gute.

The only thing Boyle did was eat up snaps that should be going to the guy you drafted to be your eventual starter.

Nobody would have predicted the current state of affairs when Boyle was released.

Wrong! Rodgers status was known as early as January as affirmed by Gute and CEO. Another demonstration of GM's inefficiency and income. I don't think there is much difference between him and Boyle, but at least Boyle was in the offense longer ..... Then I wait to see how much the engagement will be.
Please never stop defending the management ... (sarcasm)

Agreed: I don't know why fans constantly romanticize the "player who got away." Boyle is not a proven commodity on the NFL level. He hasn't taken meaningful game snaps. He hasn't thrown a pass that mattered in a single NFL game...yet we talk about him like he's Matt Flynn. If the Packers' coaching staff has any starch in its resume, Boyle is no loss.

I'd almost rather talk about Taysom Hill...

...almost.

What I like about this move is.................should Rodgers get traded the Packers do NOT need to lessen the fleecing of another team for players and draft picks. Example with Denver we do not need Bridgewater that impacts just how much we might get in say draft choices, or players. Instead, I want someone like Jeudy, or Chubb, etc.

Agreed. I never got the fascination with Bridgewater. I don't think there is much daylight between him and Bortles and tons of others. Needing to get one of the Denver QBs was tying their hands, IMO.

They don't now. And that's good.

Savvy move - regardless if Rodgers returns or not. A QB who is familiar with the offensive system - an OC (whom he had his best statistical year) - and has won in the playoffs. Still young enough to not require a walker, and, old enough to not become unglued by team drama (this being the most important attribute for now).

I know that there are some fans who think that the Packers should have retained A.R's favorite wrestling buddy "Tim Boyle." However it isn't the best allocation of resources to have 2 developmental QBs - with little or no NFL experience on this roster. In short, I would feel much better having Blake Bortles start or come into a game than Tim Boyle.

Hate to say it but this move really sucks because it means we have QB issues! I'm still cautiously optimistic AR returns for one more SB push (because the Packers are primed and ready for another championship)!
I am also somewhat excited about and am open to the idea of AR's trade potential; however, it doesn't matter how good your team is, if you don't have a legitimate QB!

Signing BB is just another sign that we have a serious situation at 1265 Lombardi Ave...

Regardless of the AR situation this is a good move. Sure Bortles didn't become a star for the Jaguars, but in the past decade or so who has? At best, we have a QB3 who is still fairly young with multiple years of starting experience and some playoff success under his belt. At worst, we have a transitional QB1 until Love is ready or replaced who, again, has playoff starting experience and has shown he can produce in the right system with the right weapons. Bonus, the guy who had that right system is our OC now. Since he'll be familiar with our offense already getting him up to speed shouldn't take too long either, which means more reps for Love.

If so, on the surface I don't like it, let the kid take some lumps and increase the learning curve.

I can see it now, BB has a good year and then theres a QB controversy between BB and JL. But hey competition is a good thing and maybe there is something to a veteran presence to help JL, though I'm not sold on it. I Do Know the packers FO knows a hell of a lot more than me what's best. lets Go BB

This might be move with 3 different reasons:
1. They are find trade partner for Aaron Rodgers and his era with Packers is over;
2. They are find trade partner for Jordan Love and this trade was the part of the deal with Aaron Rodgers;
3. Aaron Rodgers stay with Packers, but refuse to play and claim he will sit out.

Those 3 options are most likely, with 1st at the most probable and 3rd not likely.

There is 4th option that Jordan Love is so bad that Packers needed back up QB for Aaron Rodgers, which is the least likely.

Mr Naglar with a very grounded assessment.

I found myself jumping the gun with negativity before looking into it. The contract terms I would imagine put some light on it.

They do need to develop a potential 3rd string QB who has potential to actually play considering he could be 2nd string before he throws his first pass in practice. A Rookie development would be a poor choice under these circumstances. , BB knows the system to a degree, has nfl experience, dirt cheap, possibly be a positive for JL, doesn't have to be a mentor to supply a good example and ears other than the coaches.

Unfortunately one of the reasons I came around was just how low Blake B had sunk in the NFL QB world. Literally hasn't played much since 2018.

The consolation prize if AR leaves is getting to see this kid develop, sooner than we all hoped, but thats business. Sure I;ll be disappointed that GBs chances for a SB showdown are certainly set back. Maybe because I'm older it doesn't matter so much, its inevitable and it's only like a 10% chance to win anyway even with him. helps you already have the new prospect so we get to see him.

IMO The wins get sweeter when they are less expected. Just Making the Playoffs used to be great, now I expect it.
To me Every win will feel bigger without AR.

I agree, Dino.

Blake was signed to be a veteran backup to Love. There’s a couple of young QBs that are vying for a spot on our roster as a #3 in the rookie minicamp in a couple weeks.

This Packers team as it stands today was built to roll, all the way. Personally, I believe the Packers will realize an epic amount of success early, as teams will sleep on GB minus AR. Then what? @NO, DET, @SF, PIT, @CIN, @CHI, WAS, @AZ, @KC for the first 9 looks like a murderers row under normal conditions, but, I like our D and our running game on O. We all can expect improved play on ST. This will be a great challenge for the kid, who is LOADED with weapons & and extremely motivated HC.

We are going to be witnessing EXACTLY what LaFleur wants to run, with a bigger chip on his own shoulder to win without AR. He’s 26-6 in 2 years.

Let the rest of the media world joke it up about GB signing Blake Bortles. Rodgers is not coming back to GB. The Jordan Love era has begun, and Blake Bortles will be a good vet add to LaFleur’s QB Room to help guide 10 successfully through the season.

Run what you brung! AGNFB

I like how you think but I would not throw away possibilty that they found trade partner for Jordan Love (I do not want that scenario!) as part of the deal with Aaron Rodgers. Because I really believe Aaron do not consider Blake Bortles as threat that much as he consider Jordan Love. If he is sure that JL will not be ready next season, all this s*its that goes around would not happened.

My humble opinion!

And being that he wants to have a NEW contract, with more money and guaranteed years so to prove what a waste the decision was. . If not he wants to part ways when it will do the max damage to the packers so it hurts the fans, teammates and org. and make him look the best. Doubt he thought so many fans would resent those sentiments as we see right through him and how its a slap in the face to all of the above that he would do something that low..

IDK hopefully it was just bad Negotiation advice, he comes back for 1, maybe 2 years and then Love takes over.

I think it is funny... the kid is going to rock the NFL world, and there will be NO FLEXING of Packer games. Once the rest of the NFL sees what Jordan Love does with this Packers team, they won't be able to get enough.

We do think differently on this notion of ultimate team success this year should AR be traded, but I am looking at this through a kind of Matt LaFleur lens regarding JL.

1. LaFleur's arguably as competitive as AR, or more. He may be more so NOW with AR's dissing of both he and Green Bay. He will use every tool at his disposal to insure Jordan Love is put in the best situations to succeed.

Rodgers just pissed off a HC who started his career by going 26-6. OK.

2. The Packers are built to win the Super Bowl. I firmly believe this. Sure, we have some question marks at LT regarding Bakhtiari's return timetable, and the development of other players on the OL. However, the Josh Myers pick was shrewd. That allows the Packers to shift Elgton Jenkins to LT until Bak's return, and Billy Turner back to starting RT. You win up front, and I have zero problems with Runyan and Patrick at the OG positions. There now appears to be ample depth everywhere.

3. Skill positions are stacked with veteran talents, along with a couple of new gadget players for MLF in Amari and UDFA Bailey Gaither, who I think will make this roster. Always good to have two of those guys. Regardless, they will help to ease the pressure on Love as a passer, offering high percentage targets nearly everywhere, plus gadget concepts.

LOOK AT THE RB ROOM!!! OMG!!!

4. Speaking of which, with Jordan Love as QB, he will more than likely follow LaFleur's instructions/wishes in the running game. The same cannot be said of AR. With THIS Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon and Kylin Hill attack? Wow. I think GB will completely wear opposing Defensive Front 7s out. That, in turn, should open up one hell of a lot in the passing game.

5. Eric Stokes. Jaire Alexander. Good luck throwing on those two, NFL.

6. We'll be seeing a different kind of game. With the Packers using their full capacities in the run game, chewing up clock the whole time, opposing Offenses will be forced to throw more, on those two. Against a new D that they don't have on film.

All of that points to a solid early start with Jordan Love gaining confidence with each game, and his teammates gaining confidence in him in return.

7. This new Defense under Joe Barry. I really look at this as Matt LaFleur's Defense. Joe Barry is running it for him. I do believe those were the parameters under which Barry was hired, for the most part. Barry is no slouch, but Matt knows what he wants.

On that D, we are LOADED with ball hawks and pass rushers. Rashan Gary should be coming into his own. Kenny Clark now has someone he can play alongside in TJ Slaton. Z and Preston can still bring it, maybe better in this new system.

Against the run, I believe we will be much better this season.

Add in any players the Packers might get via an AR trade, along with maybe a big FA signing with new cap space to play with, and this could be legit. Super legit.

Oh, WAIT!!!! This thread is about Bortles. Never mind... #sorrynotsorry

Patrick Mahomes won the MVP in his year 2, with virtually no experience his year 1, sitting and observing Alex Smith. Matt LaFleur guided both Matt Ryan and Aaron Rodgers to MVP seasons. Think he can't do the same with Jordan Love? In his year 2 after sitting and observing Aaron Rodgers? A player some NFL scouts compared to both Mahomes and Rodgers??? Wouldn't that be a F'n kick?!!!

Not Gutes fault, he assembled a roster that could of won last year. AR has a great game they win by 7-10 points. Don't necessarily blame him but if you want to be the top paid QB and thought of as one of the all time best he really should be having much better games when it comes to big games, most importantly the playoffs. He seldom does though.

2019 in SF and in playoffs he sucked and just salvaged in catch-up mode.
2020 another bad game in the NFCCG with his stats pumped up when they fell behind, was given turnovers in good field position, lots of opportunities due to all the to and 3 and outs the packers forced in the 2nd half.

His playoff performances are littered with not playing up to the contract/hype/ability.

If Bakh is healthy they win as well. The list goes on, would of should of could of, I know but you still do your evaluations that includes those and the problem was by no means the roster. 1 evaluator had them as the #1 Roster last year. I think they are in the top 3 this year as well, with out AR top 10.

Signing Bortles does a few things.

It protects the Packers to some extent if Rodgers sits out. It also sends a signal to Rodgers that the Packers are prepared for and willing to move on with business as usual if Rodgers sits out. This protects the Packers and also weakens Rodgers' leverage for stand off.

It sends a signal to the rest of the league that the Packers are serious about a potential stand off with Rodgers. It also re-affirms "Love is not ready", which may or may not be an exaggeration. The Packers stating publicly that Love isn't ready, and the pick up of Bortles, signals to the league that Rodgers is extremely valuable to the Packers, and if you want him, you're going to have to make a serious offer and bring a lot of compensation to the table.

The signaling to the league is interesting, because it's sort of a paradox. The Packers are ready to go into 2021 w/o Rodgers, but he's still ultra-valuable to them. This is going to be a very nuanced game with a lot of smoke screening if the Packers are looking to eventually move Rodgers for max value (which I expect they ultimately are, the question is when.)

Well said Oppy, GreenGold, and Coach Dino!

There is no shortage of drama and curiosity this offseason unlike many years. Ahhh....to know what is truly going on behind the scenes in the FO. I agree with many that it sure seems like with BB that Rodger's is likely gone. Regardless of why the Packers signed BB it is a good move. Love can get the majority of the snaps force feeding his development. BB does not require that much time on the field as the backup QB.

I see Bortles signed:

1. To be Love's veteran back up and, if Rodgers does remain a Packer in 2021, will be 3rd string as he has been the last few years....even being on the PS recently.

2. Because his background check had Hackett as a key source. In fact Hackett coached him to his best pro season in 2017 when Bortles led the Jags to the AFCCG. I note the Jags ran the ball 50% of the time that year. Sound familiar?

3. As he spent most recent time in the QB room of the Rams, with a similar offense to the Packers.

4. Due to an NFL arm, great size and lots of NFL game experience....just inconsistent but maybe Matt, Nate and Luke can sharpen the 29 year old's skills.

5. Because he was a good one year value.

What if Love is traded in June and Rodgers gets injured in a game. I feel good having a veteran former 1st rounder in Bortles. Who would you want? The team needs 3 or 4 quarterbacks for training camp and preseason. This is a very good signing. Plus he worked with the OC at Jacksonville and has as many playoff wins as Rodgers. C'mon man.

I assume AR has as many playoff victories the last 2 years as this clown. Are you saying that a SB victory does not count? Or playoff victories AR had when McPadlevel was coach?

As far as who I would rather have......tim Boyle comes to mind, as well as probably 30 or so other QBs. If anything this signing tells me the Packers front office has ZERO faith in Love.
