Packers sign K Dominik Eberle

The former undrafted free agent spent his rookie year with the Packers new special teams coach.

The Packers announced on Tuesday that they have signed free agent kicker Dominik Eberle.

A first-year player (and former teammate of Jordan Love) out of Utah State, Eberle entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders in May 2020 and spent his entire rookie season on the Raiders’ practice squad. This is obviously noteworthy given the Packers hiring of former Raiders special teams cooridnator Rich Bisaccia, who will have the same job in Green Bay. You have to think Bisaccia has some familiarity here and may have even given input on the signing.

In 2021, Eberle spent time on the practice squads of the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans, appearing in one game for Houston when he was activated in Week 16 as a COVID-19 replacement. In that game vs. the Los Angeles Chargers, Eberle connected on 2 of 3 field goals, including a 51-yarder, and all five extra points along with three touchbacks on eight kickoffs.

The Packers have kept kicker JJ Molson on the practice squad for over a year, so you have to think he and Eberle will get a chance to compete for the kicking job this summer if Green Bay decides it's time to move on from Mason Crosby.

Crosby is coming off a down year that saw him miss a career-high nine field goal attempts in 2021, which led the league. Crosby is heading into the last year of his deal and is set to count $4.7m against the salary cap.

Seems to me Packers also need to find (and put) players who can catch the ball and players who can BLOCK on the O side of Special Teams, as well as players with speed who can maintain lane integrity and can 'TACKLE on the D side.

What we needed was a competent ST coach...you know, a coach who can get all 11 players on the field who completely understand what their job is.

STs have now caused two playoff losses: The NFCC game vs Seattle and SF. At the very least, STs may not win games for you, but they should not cause losses. Just be competent.

Novak, Slowik, Zook, Mennenga, and Drayton had one thing in common. All were incompetent ST coaches.

Bisaccia has to be an improvement...in fact he was one of the ST coaches I hoped the Packers would hire.

A good ST coach was needed plus: 1. Gutes ear in identifying players that excelled in the College ST ranks
2. Gute caring enough about ST to make it a draft priority
3. Murphy not being cheap on ST coaching hires.
4. ML knowing anything of ST coaching and not allowing enough starters to
block or tackle depending on what principal is being deployed to the
field. (punt/kickoff/xtra point.)
5. It doesn't matter, until it matters....and now, FINALLY...it matters.

It may well be time to move on from Crosby. I just feel bad his last season with the Packers was such a crappy one with a lot of the blame falling on the long snapper and holder.

Don't feel bad for Crosby after 15 years. Time to shuttle players nd bring in the new. Crosby caused Pack to lose field position with consistently short kickoffs, which were not on anyone other than himself. This is a young man's game! Whether the best kicker is currently on the roster we should find out.

I am more than willing to move on from Crosby but I want to see someone win the job. Crosby has been shacky but I trust him in crunch time late in the season over a lot of what I saw this season.
