Packers sign Rashan Gary to four year extension

The deal includes $96 million in new money.

From NFL Network:

Gary has indeed looked fantastic coming off the torn ACL he suffered in Detroit last season.

Per Bill Huber, the signing bonus is $34,636,928. The base salaries are $4.9 million in 2023, $1.3 million in 2024 and $6.8 million in 2025 before soaring to $18 million in 2026 and $21 million in 2027. The deal includes roster bonuses of $6.2 million in 2024 and $8.7 million in 2025.

Good post egbertouse.

I would say this reminds me of Nick Perry a little after he got 10 sacks.
Rashan is not a double digit sack guy yet, but at least he goes all out most of the time.

How about a Pro Bowl, maybe more forced fumbles for that kind of money?
Talking heads keep saying Gary is among the edge rushing elite....Really?
But then again, they are paying Preston Smith 12 million/year.
So who can tell what the Packer brain trust is thinking.

Yea pay him, but that amount?
I just don't see it.

One dimensional player and inconsistent as well. Not worth the money.

No way around paying for it. Someone will anyway. Probably in this division.

I always like your post Steve....

But by that line of thinking, we should have given MVS 30 million.

Paying a guy, and over paying him, are two different things.

I'll go on record saying they overpaid.

Like i did back when Gute signed Jimmy Graham and made him the highest paid tight end in the league.
Graham then became the 9th ranked tight end in the NFL with 636 yards and 2 TD's.

Some of these business decisions by the Packers make me scratch my head....
Signing Kevin King to a free agent deal after he helped us lose the NFCCG fiasco against the Bucs.
Giving Rodgers the highest paid contract while they have a 1st round QB twiddling his thumbs on the bench.
How much have the Packers paid Preston Smith since 2019?...the edge rusher who makes a play every 3rd or 4th game.
Lets trade up 2 draft picks for a QB project to sit on the bench when the then current Packer team is one win away from getting to the SuperBowl? (DUH)
Etc.

I could almost write a novel about the Packers bad business moves.

I agree with you. I'm just saying that's what they're worth now.

This guy's not like MVS or King he's closer to a Clay Mathews and would blossom for sure somewhere else in the division. Let the Dean Lowery's go, have to keep these types of players. The better the rest play the better he plays, and he makes them better too.

Steve, i wasn't comparing MVS or King to Gary, i used the others of examples of bad business practices, or what could have been.

"But by that line of thinking, we should have given MVS 30 million."

I understand a team can't sign everyone who's contract is coming up for renewal, but that was a bad comparison. Rashan Gary is considerably better at his position than MVS ever was or will be at his. Some players are worth market value...others aren't.

Market value is determined by what a team gives a player, (usually).

That alone doesn't make it a good value.

Was Deshaun Watson signed for market value?

Idk, but what i do know, is that it was bad business.

My point with Gary was that it was a bad contract, they overpaid, the others were examples, not a comparison to Gary.

I don't give Gute a lot of credit, but at least he didn't pay MVS what the Chiefs did, so there is that.

The worst part about it is that I don't think it's in Gute's hands with the way they're doing things in the front office. Maybe they asked him about it? CW knows how the management structure works, I think.

Yea, it's hard to tell who is pulling the strings, it could be a combination of Ball, Murphy, and Gute, or a mix of those.

I don't know 100% for sure, i'd have to be there.

But Gute is the GM, he is 'supposed' to handle the roster.
********
Now if we talk about the structure at 1265 again, then we speak of Murphy changing the bylaws and putting himself in charge of football operations.

I thought that Wolf and Thompson having full control of football operations worked out well, evidenced by those two building two Championship winning rosters.

But i guess Murphy knows (cough) better 🙄

Ya you let him go for picks and let him get injured again quickly and drain your opponents coffers for a change. Thats what happened to Perry, he got hurt and was out of football faster then superman in a phone booth.

Good player but too often injured. This is another in a long line of financial miscues which will continue to plague a team that just might be the worst in the NFL this year.

Hasn't he only been injured once? The ACL last year is the only time he's been injured that I can recall. And he came back from it sooner than anyone anticipated.

I don't think it's fair to classify him as a "Good player but too often injured."

Yikes!!!
I know many think Gary a 'game wrecker' based on a couple of stats, but he doesn't change game plans, no Offense is accounting specifically for him, and the Packer Defense certainly doesn't scheme him as a game wrecker, less expect him to make plays that alter it's path. He's basically a slightly better version than Nick Perry, who might make a play depending on the level of Offensive opponents he faces. He is not a guy your building a Defense around, but rather a piece that has been marked as a must keep piece, less you have none.

That's a lot of money!!! He doesn't stop the run all the time. Ridder waved at him as he was going to score. Russ Ball keeps giving out large contracts. I really don't understand it. For once I would like to see the Packers let someone test the open market just to see what other teams think of the Packer
players

I remember Ted doing that, letting the player test the market.
Off the top of my head i think of BJ Raji.

I think what he/she is saying, after getting through the broken english.....

Is that Gary isn't a 'Game Changer'. (which i agree)

I disagree that offense's don't account or game plan for Gary, that is just foolish to say.

Gary is a fast bull rusher with a good motor, and you can bet your ass that offense's are well aware of him and plan how to block him, and/or scheme plays around him.

Gary is above average (that's a compliment) but he isn't at (one of the greats) level.

It isn't my English that's broken, but your reading comprehension, and the fact that English is a proper noun and is capitalized takes away from any credibility you're trying to garner.

This was another stupid move by Gute.
The next GM/Coach, must now play the 3-4-4.
And now they have to cut.

Gutt obviously wants the patronize the fans by saying, look I'm not letting our good defensemen leave, I'm all in for this team and really care.
The Packers are done period end of story until Murphy, Gutt and LeFlower are gone the big rebuild begins and people come in and get rid of the dead wood and there is still a lot of it on this team.

I am shocked and posted more then once he would never, like Perry, sign an extension and move on for MO MONEY.
The only thing I can think of is his agent said take the money no one will give you as much. Especially since you had the big injury and missed a lot of time your value is way down. Perry never had the big injury so he was able to get out of dodge.

This imo is a no-brainer.
You must have a speed rusher to succeed; we might have two if Van Ness starts to play like a 1st rnd pick.
QB, OT, and a stud rusher are the essentials…we are lacking two.
Go Packers!!!

Yeah I don't understand the overwhelming negative comments. Gary isn't as flashy as Bosa or Watt, but he certainly gets the job done. The comments may be a reflection of the lousy year the team is having. Hard to get excited about signing news I guess. I am happy for Gary. He put in the work and is a bonafide elite pass rusher in the NFL, certainly in the top 5.

Well, he is the 5th highest paid edge rusher in the league now.

He's tied for 29th in sacks, has 0 forced fumbles.

But he does have a fast bull rush, and a good motor most of the time.

Elite?....meh

I think he's got a good agent who knew how to leverage.

Being a game changer, is Rashan Gary then under payed?,

Lets see here JDH...
Max Crosby-2019 4th round pick #106...
44 career sacks..8 forced fumbles...60 run stuffs
23.5 mill/year
************
Rashan Gary, 2019 1st round pick #12....
27 sacks..3 forced fumbles....15 run stuffs
24 mill/year
*************
So what should happen here JDH......?

Should Crosby take a pay cut, or should Gary get a raise?
