Packers signing outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus

The former Texan reportedly turned down more money elsewhere to join Green Bay's defense.

The Packers keep adding discarded veterans to their defense, the latest move reportedly being the addition of veteran outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus.

The former Texans linebacker, who was released after Houston was unable to find a trade partner. has three sacks, four tackles for a loss, three quarterback hits and 12 tackles in six games for Houston this season.

The Packers have need for reinforcements at outside backer with Za'Dariuus Smith on injured reserve with a back injury and Preston Smith not practicing today after sustaining an oblique injury in Sunday's win over the Bears.

One interesting note from Demovsky, Mercilus apparently agreed to terms with the Packers while turning down more money from other teams.

This is what "all-in" looks like, and what we've seen other teams do while we wished the Packers would in the past.

Gute and the Packers serious about putting pieces together.

Just as with the Jaylon Smith signing, the Packers got better today.

dobber,
From what I saw against the Bears on Sunday, I'm thinking signing Mercilus likely spells the end for Jaylon Smith.
Man, he looked out of sorts, bordering on confused, and slow.

Houndog, I'm thinking that it's not looking good for Z to return rather than replacing Jaylon Smith. Also as far as I know Mercilus is an outside guy while Jaylon was signed to help the Packers at ILB. We'll see. Thanks, Since '61

Low Probability he suits up for the green and gold in '21 or in the future. OLB will be a draft priority in 2022.

Mercilus will likely play outside LB. That has nothing to do with Smith. Smith, in fact only played 17/61 defensive snaps. Campbell played by far the most with Barnes and Smith playing what was left almost equally.

You’d be confused after maybe 2 practices in a very different D. Let’s give him a week or two to learn the system before we start to pat him on the back or push him out the door. Mercilus will probably have some of those issues.

He'll have the advantage of being in more of a "see ball, get ball" position, whereas Jaylon Smith actually had to fit into the defense. I think he'll play this weekend...15-20 snaps, as a guess.

"IF the Packers signed Whitney Mercilus at a veteran minimum deal, his contract could come in as low as $566,667 on the salary cap using the Veteran Salary Benefit rule in the CBA. Let's see when the actual details roll in."
Ken Ingalls Packers Cap.

I like Gute's willingness to try to improve. This should be an inexpensive move even if Mercilus would not do a qualified contract and he is somewhat more expensive. Not sure why he wouldn't though. I don't think it makes much difference to him unless he doesn't have an offset and can double dip. Waiting for the details.

Jaylon Smith signed for his minimum of $990K, which results in a cap charge to GB of $770K since he missed the first 5 weeks.

The issue is who is available. Gute has substantially reinforced the linebacking crew over the past three weeks with Jaylon Smith and Whitney Mercilus. Do you have any suggestions as to who Gute should sign from the current FA DLs? I don't know of any that would make the Packers appreciably better. It is easy to criticize, harder to do.

IMO, the Packers will fail, once again, to make it to the Super Bowl if they don’t upgrade the defensive line. They have no one on the active roster or practice squad with the ability to provide substantial improvement. The only way I see out of this situation is to make a trade.

The trade deadline is approaching, and I know everyone says that isn’t the Packers way. Well, if this is Aaron Rodgers’ “Last Dance,” I would argue this year is a special circumstance. For those who would say the Packers can’t afford a better player, I have four suggestions of defensive linemen on teams not going anywhere and who might be available for a low to medium draft pick. All four have been productive this year, and are affordable.

Next to each player’s name is their current PFF score and average yearly salary. (A PFF score of 60 is neutral - the player is doing his job. Above 60 means a player is doing more to help his team win. Under 60...)

Tyler Lancaster 51.1 - $1,250,000
Dean Lowry 58.5 - $6,775,000
Kingsley Keke 58.2 - $708,316
(For comparison) Kenny Clark 79.3 - $17,500,000

WFT - Tim Settle 71.7 - $628,000
Jets - Folorunso Fatukasi 77.3 - $658,500
Jaguars - Jay Tufele 72.4 - $1,076,000
Steelers - Chris Wormley 77.6 - $2,250,000 - (Pittsburgh traded a 5th round pick to Baltimore for Wormley.)

I’m sure there are other productive, affordable players, but are the Packers truly all-in this season?

It seems our defensive line is playing well of late, and may be rounding into a much better unit.
So do we give the current guys more time to show their stuff, or do we bring in a new guy?
I don't know anything about these proposed defensive linemen, so am interested to know if other fans consider them as upgrades to our current group.

In 2020, Dean Lowry’s PFF grade for the year was 57.3. Personally, I think it would be foolish to expect much more out of him this year. I don’t know how anyone else feels, but I think BG has to own up to his mistake of giving Lowry a contract of almost $7M per year.

Credit to you for suggesting a few actual names of productive, low cost players. But to be honest, that is a very easy thing to do. I can easily name a handful of productive, low cost Packers.

The real challenge is to find an NFL team that is actually stupid enough to trade away productive, low cost players. That's a bit more difficult, no?

Fatukasi is a fine run stuffer (90.4 PFF run grade in 2019 plus 2020). His overall PFF grade is 77.4 this year. So, apparently just decent pass rush skills. He has played NT, 3 tech and some 5 tech (6'4" tall).

Jets stink again. They brought in Saleh and the thought in some quarters (i.e. media - I have zero idea) is his new scheme renders Fatukasi less useful.

Fatukasi (6th rounder) is in his fourth year and earned the PPE salary raise to $2.183M, so the acquiring team would have a cap charge of about $1.4M or so. That's doable: GB would cut someone and the net might be maybe $1M this year (it depends on who they cut!).

Maybe Fatukasi doesn't want to play for a lousy team? Maybe the Jets want a 2022 draft pick instead of waiting for a 2023 comp pick? IDK. Not hard to find media speculation on the Jets trading Fatukasi.

Dear jh9! You're absolutely right. Gutekunst the Destroyer (my term for him following his lunatic move to draft Love instead of an elite WR and cause Rodgers to exit the team after specifically stating that he wanted to finish his career with the Packers) has made some outstanding pickups in De'Vondre Campbell and possibly also Douglas in the secondary and now another LB pass rusher in Mercilius.

You, Taryns Eyes, and a small minority of enlightened people on this sight have figured it out. Yes, the Packers need to upgrade the LB corps and yes they need to bolster the DL to give Kenny Clark a powerful ally. Why are these things so obvious - Nagler gets it - yet the delirious Packers' party line CHTV faithful seem oblivious to reality. At least Gutekunst the Destroyer seems to be awakening to the reality that this is the Packers' last chance to reach the Super Bowl with next season's departure of Rodgers, Adams, and probably MVS, too. Maybe Gozer Gute will also realise that the Packers are unable to pressure opposing QBs without adding a major stud on the DL which would likely free up Kenny Clark to get to the QB.

Absolutely right on Harold, if Gute doesn’t some how get Rodgers to sign a new contract he will have single handedly ruined this franchise for years.. Hate Rodgers all you want, but he’s still a top 10-5 qb in this league at a minimum , and Love isn’t better than back up quality at this point..Sure he could be ok, but chances are we’ll be drafting another qb in a few years, and this team will be a dumpster fire, and there’s only one guy to blame.. The almighty can do no wrong GOD good ole gluteus Maximus..

I just never expected for the Packers to be in on any of these mid-season discussions - seems so strange. Glad that we are adding these kind of players to help get us over the top. Ted would have closed the purse and rolled CAP money into next year. Rodgers finally asked "what are you saving it for?"

Welcome to Green Bay Mr. Mercilus.

Dear TarynsEyes! Thank you for echoing my general argument that in engineering the departures of Rodgers and Adams in order to put his selfish stamp on the team, Gutekunst has finally had an ephiphany and come to the realisation that this is indeed the last dance to the Super Bowl and he might in fact need to add some pieces - especially to the pathetic defense - in order to give the Packers any chance of advancing to the SB.

I've never considered it selfish to make difficult decisions that are in the best interests of the long-term health of the team, while knowing such decisions will be wildly unpopular with a good deal of the fan base.

That's what Gutekunst has done. If it works or not remains to be seen. Aaron Rodgers dons the green and gold because Ted Thompson did the same thing. Ted Thompson was also vilified by much of the fan base for doing so, just like Gutekunst will be.

Hopefully, there will be another 10-15 years of winning football in GB because the GM did his job and planned for the post-ROdgers era.

Given the apparent lack of high-quality QBs in the next draft (and possibly also 23's draft - too soon to tell), Gutekunst's drafting of Love may become the best first rounder we've drafted since Rodgers.

Of course, if Love flames out, then it'll be the worst since maybe Mandarich or Justin Harrell. Time will tell. That's why he's paid to make the tough decisions.

Houston gave him a ridiculous 54 million contract in 2018 of which 28 million was guaranteed. I hear he’s paid by the Texans this year and next. In the interim, they moved from the 3:4 where he was an OLB and have been trying to make him a DE in a 4:3 DE. That’s not necessarily a viable transition.

He didn’t fit Houston’s new defense. They cut their losses. He does fit ours (and apparently ruled out 4:3 teams). He doesn’t have to be all pro to improve the team, just better than Burks and, ideally, Hamilton, and spell those ahead of him. If he is more, that’s a huge bonus.

A lot of whiners!

Gute has significant more value and impact than Rodgers now, and even more each year into the future.

Amazing how people forget the 6 and 10 seasons and no playoffs with Rodgers and then immediately after Gute takes over two straight NFCG appearances. LF hired and team surging and have a good backup QB in Love setting up Packers for years to come. Laughable!

HaroldDrake you are sounding much like the exiled CCTV fan of a few years ago. Hate to bring up the old profile name.

This has been a remarkable set of additions to the Packers roster of late by Brian Gutekunst. Anyone bashing him doesn't understand the mechanics of adding quality talent to an already loaded roster with a lot of high cap figure contracts.

I get fans wanting this or that position bolstered. I do the same thing. But, within very limited cap constraints, BG has built, and continues to build a roster capable of winning it all. These are LONG seasons, and a game of attrition. Everyone in the league, lately, seems in need of CB. Jaire goes down, and BG brings in 3 players to see who can stick to the roster. ILB was a much needed upgrade, and he brings in tremendous VALUE because that was what his team's cap allowed for. De'Vondre Campbell is proving himself to be a difference maker.

Barnes gets injured, again, and Jaylon Smith drops in his lap! JS had a draft grade off the charts "Perennial All-Pro," prior to his ACL tear in his last bowl game. The guy's numbers blow away those of any ILB on our team over the last 3 years. Another addition who some fans complain about, after having had a little more than 1 week of practice with his new team... ??? I think Smith and Campbell will be a formidable pairing within a matter of weeks for our middle D. I'm here for it, man!!! A lot of us have been pining for great ILB play in Green Bay for years, if not decades. I think we're finally going to see that with these two players.

In comes Whitney Mercilus, as Preston Smith goes out with injury. This is like stars aligning. Granted, his numbers took a dip last year, but that was on a super shitty team in HOU. I think we will see the 2019 version of Mercilus or better here with him playing for the Packers. He's motivated to win a Super Bowl ring.

Perfect. He is one extremely capable player at a position of great need.

If I'm not mistaken, somehow, Gutekunst still has a little cap wiggle to sign another Interior DL or to trade for one before the deadline. There are many other teams who wish they had this level of talent scouting and player acquisition acumen. Our OL loaded with young talents through the first 6 weeks is a testament to how good BG really is. Yosh Nijman UDFA 2019, Jon Runyan Jr R6 2020, Josh Myers R2 2021 and Royce Newman R5 2021 held down the fort for much of our 5-1 record this season with Billy Turner. Just remarkable player evaluation talents we are witnessing from BG & his staff.

Looking at the whole picture, BG has done quite a lot with very little in terms of non-committed cap resources, and I believe we will be surprised by the results in time. We'll see just how good he is if he can close the deal, and the Packers win this next Super Bowl. That's the measure here.

These new players will need some time to acclimate to their new team in GB while learning their responsibilities and teammates. Maybe we get some of our starters back from injury in due time - some of the best players in the NFL at their respective positions. We are fortunate to be able to just sit back and see what they do. I think it's gonna be really damn cool. I love this Whitney Mercilus signing. That dude is motivated to tear it up.
