Packers Snap Counts Versus The Bears: Week 2

The Packers' inactive players were David Bakhtiari, Sean Rhyan, Caleb Jones, Samori Toure, and Jonathan Ford.  Only Bahktiari was inactive due to injury.  The Packers elevated just one player from the practice squad, Patrick Taylor, who played on special teams.  Rasheed Walker, Zach Tom, and Jordan Love were active but did not play.

18 on Offense

The offensive line was much better this week.  Other than giving up a sack on a speed rush to Robert Quinn early in the game, Yosh Nijman was pretty solid blocking at the point of attack and he was able to get downfield on occasion.  After a rough outing last week, Runyan remembered how to block and was fine.  Josh Myers had some problems snapping the ball.  One snap was low and wide, and he had a false start for moving the ball.  Another snap hit Watson who was running in motion behind the line.  Newman at guard was an upgrade from Hanson.  Jenkins had some rust but was still an upgrade from Newman at right tackle.  Jenkins probably could have been called for a couple of holds, and he had some problems with Trevis Gipson, who had 3 of the Bears' 4 quarterback hits, 2 of their 3 sacks, and 2 of their 8 tackles for loss.  The pass protection was much better.

Aaron Jones powered the team.  He gained 54 yards in the first half on 7 carries, including a touchdown run, and added 78 more yards on 8 carries in the second half to finish with 132 yards on 15 carries, a 8.8-yard average per attempt.  He added 3 receptions for 38 yards with a touchdown, though the touchdown reception looked a lot like a jet motion running play.  A. J. Dillon finished with 61 yards on 18 attempts, a 3.4 yard average.  He added 6 yards on one reception.  That is 37 touches for the two running backs.  The most impressive series was in the fourth quarter after the defense stopped Fields inches short of the goal line (if indeed they did) and the Packers ran Dillon up the middle for 4 yards, then Jones for another 4 yards, and got the first down when Aaron Rodgers ran for another four yards.

Aaron Rodgers was efficient and accurate, other than one attempt to Dillon, who was open.  It may be that Dillon slipped and Rodgers tried to reload, but threw it into the dirt.  Rodgers was 19 of 25 for 234 yards and two touchdowns.  His passer rating was 131.1.  Sammy Watkins had 93 yards on 3 receptions, and Cobb chipped in 37 yards.  Romeo Doubs caught two passes for 27 yards, including a wide receiver screen that he turned into 20 yards.  That screen helped convert a 2nd and 28 when Rodgers hit Cobb for 9 on 3rd and 8.

Marcedes Lewis increased his snap percentage from 38% to 46% and on special teams from one snap to 5.  Tyler Davis also increased his snap percentages a little but he played 91% of special teams snaps.  Dillon and Jones played a combined 79 snaps even though the Packers only had 68 plays.  That suggests they were on the field together on 11 plays.  Sometimes the Packers motioned Jones out of the backfield, and I remember Dillon throwing some blocks for Jones as well, including the final block on Jones touchdown scamper off motion.  I do not remember seeing the Packers run a zone stretch running play.  The Bears played 4.69 defensive backs on average per play, and 6.31 players on their front 7, including a couple of nose tackle types in Armon Watts and Mike Pennel on 72% of their plays.

The defense only gave up 10 points.  Despite Justin Fields only attempting 11 passes, Pro Football Focus credited the Packers with 10 pressures.  Fields did have 8 rushing attempts, some of which were designed, like the sneak, with others being scrambles, but that would result in a very high pressure rate.  Preston Smith had 3 of the Packers' 5 quarterback hits, including 2 sacks, while adding 2 tackles for loss.  Smith added 7 tackles (4 solo) and was a force on the field.  Rashan Gary had one quarterback hit (a sack), and Kenny Clark added a quarterback hit.

The Bears are going to be a run-heavy team, and they lived up to that billing.  The Bears gained 180 yards on 27 carries, a 6.7-yard average.  If one excludes the quarterback's scrambles/rushing attempts, it would be 160 yards on 19 carries, an 8.4-yard average.  That seems a little too good, even though the Bears were running despite being behind by two and sometimes three scores.  The Packers did play 2.63 true defensive linemen on average per play, an extremely high number for the Packers.  I thought Dean Lowry (who had 5 tackles, 4 solo), and to a lesser extent, Jarran Reed, were on skates a little too much.  It also seemed to me that the Packers moved Kenny Clark out to defensive end and inserted Tederall Slaton at nose some in the second half.  Reed had 3 tackles (2 solo), while Slaton and Wyatt had no statistics.  Clark had one assisted tackle, so perhaps the Bears avoided him.

Equanimeous St. Brown got loose for a 30-yard reception but otherwise had just one more reception for another 9 yards.  The Packers throttled Darnell Mooney who played 90% of the snaps but caught just one pass for a negative four yards.  The run support was another issue.  Darnell Savage had 6 solo tackles, while Adrian Amos had 5 (3 solo).  That is not all that many until one realizes that the Bears only ran 41 plays.  The Bears did a good job of getting offensive linemen out on the linebackers.  DeVondre Campbell had just 4 tackles (2 solo) while Quay Walker had 5 tackles and a nice pass breakup.  Walker made some errors but one can see the speed and the talent.  The percentage of snaps for Campbell/Walker is higher than for Campbell/Barnes last year, though that should be no surprise.

Preston Smith played 90% of possible snaps followed closely by Gary and Clark, each at 88%.  Those are high percentages, but since the Packers' time of possession was 37 minutes to the Bears' TOP of 23 minutes, the number of snaps played by these players were not excessive.  The defense had a very tight rotation in general, with the "big five" in the secondary playing every snap and the backups at other positions seeing few or no snaps.  The Packers took Preston Smith and Gary off of some special teams units, thereby reducing their ST snap counts.

interesting at tight end Davis more snaps than Deguara .

I think Deguara suffers in that he's not going to block in-line very much, while Davis is a little bigger and they showed they will use him to spell Lewis when they used him in that in-line role in the preseason. That said, Davis gets pushed around too much.

Lewis is going to hang around 45% of the snaps--he's been consistent there most of his time in GB. With Tonyan back and more 2-back sets, it doesn't leave much for Deguara.

I think Deguara will have to settle for fewer snaps until Bakh and Jenkins and back to playing at a high level. Until then, GB needs inline blocking. Deguara is specifically for the illusion of complexity, and a team has less of that if their TEs are tied to the tackles' apron strings. Deguara is a move blocker and GB needs inline blocking at present. I agree that Davis is not ideal, but he is a guy who might develop his inline blocking over time.

Agreed: the Packers use two different kinds of TEs, and Deguara right now is stuck behind Tonyan.

I think it’s actually more to do with the increase in 2 RB sets. Deguara is the nearest thing to a FB. He’s a guy who often comes out of the backfield to lead block or catch and run, but yesterday Dillon was doing that. Their need was in-line blocking from TEs and that’s going to come from Davis if Lewis isn’t out there.

I think Deguara will have to settle for fewer snaps until people start getting hurt, including Tonyan and Davis.

"Until then, GB needs inline blocking. " Let me give you the redacted version of that:

"XXXXXXXX GB needs XXXXXXXX blocking". It's the secret of the LaFleur offense....block people. Use guys like Lewis, and Lazard, as blockers instead of pass catchers most plays.

DeGuara can block people, and he can catch passes, and he'll come in useful before this season is over. Davis is a better blocker.

Just as we had a lot of changeover at the WR spot last offseason, I think we'll see action at the TE spot this offseason. Tonyan will be an old FA with an injury history. Lewis will be getting Medicare. Deguara will be in the final year of his deal.

I think you nailed it. Last year Deguara 367 snaps in 16 games while Tonyan played 306 in 8. Tonyan going down probably altered how much they used a move TE but basically Deguara moved into that role with Dafney getting a few snaps here and there.

Speaking of bigger this Georgia TE is 6'-7" 270 lbs. He was considered mainly a blocking TE but has done some interesting things with the ball in his hands this year, including this wild play. He went from being considered and early day 3 guy to a potential 2nd rounder after their 1st two games. I've seen a couple of clips of him playing H back for them. He needs to change colors but keep the G on his helmet!

The disparity in snaps--68 to 41--is impressive all to itself. With all the called runs, it kept the clock moving. Fast game, overall.

I think the pecking order for snaps at WR is pretty well laid out, even with Lazard only just coming back from injury. It was good to see Watkins involved more downfield. He can still run, and they'll need that ability to block and to run out of their starting WR going forward.

Thanks for your work to turn this around on our behalf, TGR.

I kind of smiled on Lazard's two receptions. They both looked like passes I've seen AR throw to Adams a zillion times. A quick inbreaking slant. One for the first down early and the other for a TD. Lazard had a third target in the endzone that the DB got a hand on. I also thought when it is crunch time, AR is looking for Lazard and Cobb. I never thought a lot of Lazard (even had him on the PS back in 2021) but he is a useful player. I still think many readers have overestimated his ceiling. And he helped spring Jones on one of his TD runs - well, it technically was a pass, but it looked like a jet to me.

Here is hoping the rookies develop. Both look like they can be exciting players if they can get the receiving part down. Toure as well, but patience is a virtue.

Cobb isn’t going to see the field a lot. Lazard is a big, physical target who knows where to be. He’s kind of the pivot in the group when healthy, along with Tonyan. They know where to be and will win most contested balls. If we were more dynamic around him I think he has a big year.

I’m still not sold on Watkins. He looks to me like his upside is rather similar to Lazard. Dependable, but not going to break much unless ignored. If we get Doubs and Watson going more, then those pieces will thrive in the space created, but we need one or both of those to stretch Ds and create a spark play or two every now and again to pull coverage.

Cobb was used pretty much exactly like I hoped they would use him. They even mentioned it on the broadcast about what he thought his role is which was good to hear.

I don't know how much we'll see the rooks this week, Tampa has very good, and just as importantly, very physical CBs and it will be a bit of a change for those guys coming from smaller programs. Olave had a nice stat line for the Saints yesterday, 5 for 80, but had 13 targets. He was also bullied on the Winston interception in the end zone and lost a fumble. I don't think I'd play around giving the rookies short stuff, maybe give them a deep shot or two but for the most part let Watkins and Lazard play.

I missed Rodgers seeing the field on offense. To the PS with him as soon as Hill is back.

Didn't they get Watkins for his blocking too? I understand he is a good blocker but, haven't noticed it during the games. Maybe I'd notice if he didn't. It's hard to see on TV unless you watch it a couple time and try to iso a player.

I, also, read that he was known for his blocking while in college. But the NFL is a whole nother level. I heard that he is willing, it’s just working on the able. He will be fine down the road once he adjusts to the NFL.

PFF has given Sammy Watkins even higher run blocking grades than they gave Lazard. Since Watkins often lines up on the X position near the sideline, it can be hard to see on broadcast TV how well he is blocking. Of course, Watkins gets some snaps in the slot and in tighter formations, so perhaps over the course of the season we fans will get an idea.

Run more and pass less?

I think the pecking order at WR was pretty well laid out from the get go: Lazard and Watkins were going to start, and Cobb is our #3 guy, and Doubs and Watson are going to be backups. My only surprise is that we're not seeing Amari Rodgers playing with the offense yet.

We only threw 25 passes. The WRs only got 13 targets. They only caught 10 passes as a unit in 68 snaps.

And yet, we stayed in command of this game and scored plenty enough points to win. How is this possible?

One might point out that Doubs and Watson both played more snaps than Cobb. It does seem likely that Lazard is the starter, but I wouldn't use a pen to write in Watkins' name as the other starter. I think Doubs and Watson's role will increase at the expense of Watkins. I expect Cobb to dwindle as the season progresses, but we shall see.

I think regarding Watkins playing time, it will come down to Rodgers trusting him over the rookies. Not sure who will win as they all have potential to make plays. My guess, Watkins will continue to get more snaps over the rookies, unless one of them make fewer mistakes and catch the passes when thrown their way. I saw Doubs run a wrong route and hard to say, but the snap that hit Watson very well could’ve been his fault for not getting across the hike zone timely. I haven’t seen that happen before so that’s why I think it was on Watson. It was a crucial mistake that in a closer game could’ve cost them a win.

Rodgers stated that Myers snapped early, so that in him not Watson.

I think early on Watkins will benefit from trust, but that it’s imperative that Doubs and Watson get more big play opportunities as time goes on. To make this O work when the running game isn’t as dominant will require a real threat of more speed and depth. The reality is that that’s coming from those two or not at all.

Doubs is tied with Watkins amongst the WRs for 1st in catches and explosive plays and is 2nd in yards. It's doubtful he finishes there with Lazard back but, like I said before TC, wouldn't be surprised if he's the 3rd most productive WR at the end of the year.

My only surprise is Rodgers got a snap on offense.

In that survey I voted for Watkins as the Packers probable leading receiver. I thought he would pile up some yards early in the year due to his experience, remaining talent and veteran trust with AR. I hope the rookies are starting to overtake him by the end of the season. We will see. In the end it doesn't matter to me which player or players end up being the deep threat or getting the most receptions or yards.

I said to McAction today I could see the rookies start to get more chances during the three game stretch of the Giants, Jets and Washington. Tampa CBs play up quite a bit and are physical and Belichick can confuse the hell out of rookies but those games after that should get easier for them.

I have faith that Doubs can make some hay against quite a few 3rd CBs in the league and it makes sense to me to have him and Lazard on the field together quite a bit because they both can play in the slot. They need to hit a deep one to Watson and get DCs to focus on him a bit. Give him the short stuff and reverses but at some point they'll need him to play the MVS role.

A little disappointed that Wyatt hasn't shown more to date. I had hoped he would replace more of Lowery's snaps fairly quickly. The D-line needs to be more consistent - they looked very good at times and got pushed around at times. The linebackers and secondary are solid, but the D-line needs to step up for the Packers to have a top level defense.

I was disappointed to watch Wyatt when I went to a couple of practices during training camp. One trick pony with only quickness (which is a tool to build off of, obviously). He attacked one shoulder or the other and if it didn't work, he was toast. It was like watching Gileai: punch and an immediate spin move. Sometimes I tried to guess which way he was going to spin.

I agree about that disappointment on Wyatt, but I also think it takes DL longer to adjust to the NFL. Let’s hope that happens this year.

I’m really excited for Quay as he shows a lot of speed and quickness. He did get washed out in middle one or maybe a couple of times and it is a knock on him a bit in College. He does have those long arms and I suspect he will get better with training and better anticipation.

As some will recall, I wasn't that enthused by the signing of Jarran Reed. I think Lowry and Reed are both better as 4i or 5 technique but neither really seems to be getting the job done when it comes to run defense and keeping OL off the ILBs. I don't think Reed is an upgrade over Lowry, or at least enough of an upgrade to matter. Then I hoped Wyatt would provide some help in 2022, but see my other comment on Wyatt.

The Packers do have a DE who, while he has no juice at all, Heflin has done enough to suggest that he is a good run defending DE. The thing is, he is on the PS, and he has not played against starters enough to know whether he would hold up under the regular season lights.

Knew I forgot a couple of things: that 30 yarder to ESB was off a flea flicker. Really, the Bears had no passing game to speak of at all. I meant to mention Rasul Douglas coming up in run support. A couple of nice plays. Not sure about his overall level of play. Safeties still have work to do on run support. Couple of runs ruptured.

I am encouraged by the rookie receivers. Watson didn't do much this week, but he had a nice gain on an end around. Doubs had an 11 yarder last week on a jet sweep, and this week his running after that little screen for 20 yards was pretty nifty. Both these guys have work but they look like they can be dynamic playmakers.

He caught all 3 targets, and his 3 receptions tied Watkins for team high.

Here's on Dline: It has a monster. Around him, we've got a solid group of guys to help him. Gone are guys like Keke and Lancaster and they've been replaced by Slaton and Reed, who are better. Wyatt is going to get better, but until then, it's the same song as the last 3 years: Clark and Lowry are the two best Dlinemen.

I think that Heflin will get on the field for us this year. It's a long season and we need all the help we can get, but we didn't need Heflin against Chicago.

Lowry was not one of the best DL yesterday by a long stretch.

I agree with you on Wyatt. It’s not unusual even for early drafted first rounders. College defenders aren’t nearly as strong or as athletic or technically refined. Wyatt needs to learn more techniques and add power.

Hefflin would have been preferable to Lowry in the second half because he anchors and doesn’t give up and we really weren’t too concerned about rushing but containing Fields or Montgomery. Next week we have more obvious use for Lowry with Brady, but expect Fournette to give him fits. The real question is which has more value—run stoutness or Lowry’s ability to pressure. That’s a tough one for next week. To me the fact is that Slaton and Reed are a little better against the run and can disrupt too. They should get more snaps if we don’t elevate Heflin (I do not think we will).

It seemed like in preseason Heflin got more snaps at 3T and Slayton played a lot more DE. Tampa has some injuries in their interior OL and it would be nice to take advantage of it.

As far as the D line the snaps played out about like I thought they would. I thought they played more 3 down linemen than normal and I saw Slaton a couple times but thought he could have played more. The fact they DID play more 3 man fronts and still had trouble stopping the run isn't a good sign. It didn't seem like it was as much missed assignments and bad gap control as it was missed tackles and not being physical enough.

If PFF is working for you again I'd be interested in Lowry's run grade. Then again, maybe not! Someone, coach or player, needs to step up and say dominant my butt when they're watching film this week.

PFF readily took my money on Sept. 2, and I was able to look at all their data initially. But I still can't log in. Couple of emails have not helped.

That said, packerswire has some grades, and Lowry is the highest graded run defender on the Packers. Lowry's overall was 72.9. PFF had Slaton and Reed as terrible overall again and poorly graded as run defenders, with Slaton getting the worst run defense grade. PFF gave Gary a 59 grade despite stellar pass rushing stats. Quay Walker got a surprisingly high grade of 76.2. I liked a lot of what I saw from Walker, but thought he missed some run fits and had some issues moving through trash. Preston got 70.7, which is still a good grade, but I expected something a little higher.

I haven't followed up with PFF, but I think I will just dispute the credit card charge. These grades don't make sense to me.

Yeah I saw that about Lowry. Something hinky in PFFville there. I was curious about how many snaps Slaton played, I only noticed him 3 times and he had one good play, one bad one and one kind of meh. Hopefully they get the missed tackles straightened out soon. Campbell has 3 already after having 4 all of last year. I think LaFluer might want to have a few more physical practices next camp.

PFF has some interesting guys writing stat based articles. That Timo Riske guy is a mathematician that gets pretty out there from what I've seen on his free articles. It would also be interesting to see their breakdowns about who is lining up where like they did for free on college players before the draft but the grading has been more suspect last year and this year. I might get it later in the year for a month just check some things out.

They've really gone nuts on the fantasy stuff lately too so I'm guessing a lot of subscriptions are coming from that sect of fans. I play FF but I have no interest in reading in depth articles about it. I guess if you were in big buck league but I'm in a friendly $50 a year league so I'm much more interested in the ins and outs of the actual game, especially line play.

Hey TGR…why do Clark, Smith, Campbell, Walker and Gary each have 2 snaps on special teams? Do they run on punt returns sometimes?

I believe they are on the punt protection unit. And O'Donnell punted twice. The Packers have been using a lot of LB types on that unit, according to an excellent article by Justis Mosqueda on APC.

Well, I think there is a newer one but here is the one I found dated 9/2/22. Not sure about Clark but the Packers like to use ILBs and OLBs in punt protection.

The four linemen and Lewis - all with 5-23%, are on the FG and PTA teams. Tyler Davis played 20 or 22 possible ST snaps. It looks to me like he is not on the Punt Protection Unit, but plays Punt coverage, kickoff coverage, kickoff and punt returns, and is on the FG/PTA protection unit.

Justis will probably do another ST article using all-22, which I don't have. If so, I will bookmark it and include a link in a future article. He did some great one in preseason, but a lot of those guys didn't make the team.

Mike Pennel. Huh. I feel like he should be 37yo and retired by now.

For those interested, Devonte Adams was 6th in receiving yesterday on his new roster ! With 2 catches and 12 whopping yards, 1 for a TD.
