Packers Snap Counts Versus The Browns: Week Sixteen

The Packers eke out another win due to a turnover differential of plus four.

The Packers placed Ty Summers (hamstring) and Malik Taylor (shoulder) on the Injured Reserve List earlier this week.  They placed Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Chauncy Rivers on the Covid Reserve List earlier this week.  On game day, the Packers placed LaDarius Hamilton on the Practice Squad Reserve Covid list, and placed Kevin King on the Covid List.  The Packers promoted Cole Van Lanen as a Covid Replacement player for Rivers and promoted Innis Gaines as a Covid Replacement Player for King.  The Packers promoted DL Abdullah Anderson for last week's game but declined to do so this week.  The Packers signed Safety Sean Davis to the 53-man roster last week.

The inactive players were David Bakhtiari (knee), Billy Turner (knee), and Kingsley Keke (unknown - he practiced during the week).  Jordan Love, Cole Van Lanen, and Jake Hanson were active but did not play.

The Packers ran the ball pretty well.  The running backs finished with 107 yards on 21 carries, good for a 5.1-yard average.  The running backs gained 37 yards on 10 carries in the first half with a long of 8.  Aaron Rodgers generally had plenty of time to throw.  He was hit just four times during the game and was not sacked, though his injured toe was stepped on twice.  Rodgers finished with 3 touchdown passes, no interceptions, and a 115.5 passer rating.

After getting good production from the tight ends lately, against the Browns the tight ends only managed 7 receiving yards on 6 targets and 4 receptions.  Adams gained 114 yards and 2 touchdowns on 10 receptions and 14 targets.  Lazard chipped in 34 yards on 2 receptions and 5 targets, including a touchdown reception that showed great effort.

The Packers scored touchdowns on all 3 red zone trips in the first half.  They converted 3 of 6 third downs in the first half and scored touchdowns on three of their five first-half possessions.  The Packers scored once (a field goal) on their four possessions in the second half, punting the other three times.  They did not convert any of their four third-down opportunities in the second half.  The Packers for the game converted 3 out of 10 on third down.

After scoring a field goal on their first possession of the second half, the Packers got the ball back up 24 to 15.  St. Brown got blown up on an end around for minus 10 and two incompletions later the Packers punted.  On their next possession, the Packers ran Aaron Jones three straight times but he gained only 7 yards, leading to another punt.  On their next (fourth) possession of the second half, a 7-yard completion and a run by Dillon up the middle for 6 yards got a first down, but that was followed by three straight incompletions and a punt, though the third incompletion was a drop by Davante Adams that would have been good for a first down with 2 minutes and 14 seconds left in the game.

The Browns' running backs ran the ball 8 times for 69 yards in the first half.  Baker Mayfield completed 11 of 16 (68.75%) of his passes for 146 yards (9.1-yards per attempt), but he threw three interceptions.  The Packers seemed particularly susceptible to runs geared toward the edges, though they gained yards up the middle as well.  The Packers played 2.56 true defensive linemen per play on average but that did not apparently help.

Their running backs ran wild in the second half, gaining 139 yards on 15 carrier for a 9.12-yard average.  Mayfield added two rushes for 11 yards.  The Browns finished with 219 yards on 25 rushes, an 8.8-yard average.  However, in the second half Mayfield completed just 10 of 20 passes for a measly 76 yards, with one touchdown and a final, back-breaking, interception.  Their running backs had 71 receiving yards on 5 receptions and 7 targets.

The Packers did hit Mayfield six times including 5 sacks.  Rashan Gary led the way with 3 quarterback hits and 2 sacks, with Preston Smith, Dean Lowry, and Tipa Gileai each adding one sack.  Preston Smith got his 8th sack; he has now earned $1.25 million in incentives for his sacks.  If he records two more sacks in the next two regular season games, he could earn $750,000 more.

Rasul Douglas had 2 interceptions.  He was physical all game and had 3 tackles plus 2 more tackles on special teams.  Darnell Savage had an interception in an up and down performance overall and Chandon Sullivan also had an interception.  DeVondre Campbell led the Packers with 13 tackles (12 solo).  Krys Barnes added 5 tackles (4 solo) but also allowed four completions on four targets for 56 yards and two first downs, per Pro Football Focus.

With Valdes-Scantling out, Equanimeous St. Brown played 48 snaps (81%) but was not targeted.  He did carry the ball once for minus 10 yards.  Amari Rodgers received no snaps on offense but did return a punt for 9 yards.  Henry Black played 11 snaps with King out and had no statistics.  Black had an assisted tackle on special teams.  Jack Heflin played 4 snaps but had no statistics.

I had a hard time motivating myself to write this article. Rasul Douglas has been a godsend (I don't care about a few pass interference calls he had incurred or should have, for that matter). Relying on Baker Mayfield to throw interceptions would not have been a strategy I favored: he had an INT percentage of 1.6% in 2020 and a 2.0% coming into this game, which is pretty good.

The wide receivers and tight ends on the Browns did not hurt the Packers. It was the running backs on the ground and in the air. I will be curious if any of the defensive linemen receive a favorable grade, or the linebackers for that matter.

I thanked the powers that be every time Mayfield dropped back to pass.

Stefanski and the O-Coord were real dolts in this game.

Can they not SEE what was happening and then alter their strategy for an easy win?

I am thankful for their stoopidity(s).

TGR, I know many think Douglas last INT was a PI. But, take a closer look at the play and you will notice that DPJ, the WR, initiated contact and than extended his arm to create separation (that Is an offense penalty). After that penalty, Douglas pulled him to stay with him and made an awesome play.

As you said he has been a godsend and should be elected to the pro bowl. What he has achieved in 10 games is amazing. We should sign him right now to a 4 year contract.

Yes, and the pass looked tipped as well, which would mean no pass interference, if I remember the rules correctly. Holding I think (?) is still a possible call to make. The refs were letting them play and for a change, at the critical juncture, did not suddenly make calls on things they had let go all game.

I don't trust refs to be consistent even within a single game, but they were yesterday.

A lot of holding by the Browns against the rush, to create run lanes and on passes. I agree that the willingness to overlook holding/pass interference was consistent and applied to both teams.

I don't think Barnes had a good game. Tipa, Gary, and Garvin are killing GB on the edges against the run. It would really help to get Tipa and Garvin off the field, and allow Gary to power rush staying in his gap. OL is weird. Newman is slowly improving, as is Nijman.
Lucas Patrick has wild fluctuations in the quality of his play, though mostly not as good as one would hope.

I also think Campbell also had a couple of bad games recently. I’ve noticed him over playing and not staying disciplined. Yes, he is still getting the tackles, but they are far to downfield to stop an offense. IMO, Barry needs to get all 11 working together again as it isn’t just one person screwing up. We thought the problem was not having Clark in the Baltimore game, that might’ve been part of it, but this game showed it wasn’t just not having him.

Now that there's plenty of film on how the Packers want to play defense, good opponents are finding the chinks in their armor and dictating play more.

Also it’s seems we are playing on our heels and not our toes. We need to play more aggressive. This soft play reminds me of Pettine.

This Defense has been bad since Whitney Mercilus went Down. They look slow and confused. Savage just keeps over playing everything. Not to mention the missed tackles. I hope they get Alexander back soon. At least we can see some man to man again. Whatever the reason. This defense has lost their discipline. I missed MVS. The packers got No respect in the 4th quarter. The Field Shrank. The improvement on special teams was obvious. Amari Rodgers needs to be on the Kick-offs to start. His confidence depends on it. And St Brown should never have been cut.

We have to consider that the Brown's possess an elite Oline in synch with NChubb. It would be respectable decision if Barry focused on the pass defense, knowing Mayfield is prone to playing the Gunslinger, hero ball. That doesn't excuse the poor tackling, bad angles and poor edge contain which you rightly mention were very poor. But, just saying...Barry committed resources in favor of the pass contain, it was reasonable strategy. But I agree with other comments about Stokes, and other CBs giving way too much cushion to Brown's receivers. Bad.

If GB practiced a bit, maybe that would help.

Cleveland has a very good OL - it probably is elite when it is healthy. Bitonio is elite, first team All-Pro. Wyatt Teller is very good, and maybe closing in on elite. Michael Dunn is a solid starter. But they are all guards.

OC Tretter was injured, so they tossed out a 2020 5th round pick (Nick Harris) who played 146 snaps in 2020 and zero this year until this game. Harris had a nice game, IMO. Both starting tackles were out for Cleveland. RT Jack Conklin (the $15M/year man) is on IR. LT Jedrick Wills, the 10th pick in the first round in 2020, was also out. He is decent but still learning. Their backup tackle, James Hudson, got demoted and only played STs. Bitonio moved from Guard to LT, and OG Blake Hance played RT. Bitonio was good in the run game but gave up a sack to Preston.

TE Hooper can block and even Njoku is okay at it. They played some 3 TE sets using Harrison Bryant. He's 230 or 240 pounds, but the run game worked with those 3 TE sets, so maybe he can block.

My major concern is the defensive line. They just don't seem to be playing with the same activity level they were earlier in the season. Save Clark, they look slow and sluggish. This defense is starting to look a lot more like Pettine's defense of a year ago than the Barry defense of mid-season this year.

Getting Alexander back will help, but the guy the Packers really need back, Z. Smith, is looking less and less likely. If the D-line can't regain their mid-season form, I am very concerned about the Super Bowl aspirations of this team. As in years past, a good offense paired with a very average defense is not enough to win the big prize.

Guam, I agree that they look sluggish and also lack discipline. I don’t see Z-smith helping as he was always a liability in the Run D. He would help the pass rush, but the Run D seems to be the biggest problem area.

All 11 just need to get back into sync and not try to much to make individual plays IMO.

Z isn't the perfect answer, on that we agree, but he is the only quality reinforcement the Packer front seven might get. If nothing else he provides more rest to the other DL and OLB by taking some snaps. I suspect part of the sluggishness is the DL might be worn out from the long season.

Garvin hasn’t been as good since his return. Galeai is not physically ready. He’s a situational speed rusher whom we are having to ask to play more generally. At under 240 pounds, he’s just overmatched.

And Galeai was eaten alive at the point. He didn't look different from Savage coming up to take on OL and TEs. No engaging and shedding: Galeai just got moved to the ground.

As to Z, he would provide a lot more pass rush than Garvin or Galeai, and his run defense probably is better, and at any rate is not worse (IMO) than what GB is getting from Garvin & Galeai.

I don't think Smith wants to come back. my guess he is opting out after this season.he had back surgery but we don't know if he was cleared to play, out for season or what. It should not be a mystery but is and there has to be a good reason.
the defensive line may just be tired. is week 15. Gary is way bigger in the butt and legs then ever, his speed is down.

"I don't think Smith wants to come back. my guess he is opting out after this season."

Just what does 'opting out' mean? Players virtually never have contract options in the NFL....and Z has none, so quit talking out your ass.

Z has too much to lose by not playing a game. He knows he's likely to get cut and be a free agent next spring. His value on the open market is crap if he doesn't play any more snaps this season.

" Gary is way bigger in the butt and legs then ever, his speed is down."

SMH...not watching him play. Just like you're not watching Stokes.

WR snaps Lazard at 86% and St Brown at 81% and yet the RBs totaled 100% together.

Why, oh why not some 2 back sets? Both Jones and Dillon are more productive in this offense than either Lazard or StBrown, why take a better player off the field in favor of a lesser player?

I get the need for 2 WR a lot of the time, but why 3WR soo damn much when the talent level and productivity do not support the decision?

The trends of this team in 2021 demand some 2 back sets, MLF needs to expand his playbook with 2 back sets and start running them out there, I thought this would occur after game 10 or so, sadly he has not adjusted to the trends of his team as the season played out.

Controlling the TOP is critical to protect the defense. 2 back sets will help there.

This is gonna hurt us in the playoffs.

Injuries JB. The Packers have both their F-Backs on a snap count, and let's not forget how dangerously thin the OL has become. At this point the short pass game is the primary because of the lack of starters(core players) in the OL, and Rodger's toe injury. Which is why we saw Rodgers and Lafleur air it out early.

both jones and dillon can catch the ball.

jones can line up in the backfield and then split out to slot or wide and be productive.

having both on the field can also bolster the run game.

I do not mean a 2-back set with dafney or deguara in the backfield, I mean jones AND dillon in the backfield on the same play.

there are plenty of opportunities for both run and pass out of those sets.

Yup, it was either Jones or Dillon. At least, I don't remember both being on the field together much, really ever. I really like the 2-running back look, but alas....

Dafney was coming off an injury and was probably on a pitch count but he isn't the guy I want paired up with Jones or Dillon anyway.

Other than Clark, Slaton had a couple of positive plays in the ground game. The rest of the OL was dire against the run, starting with Lowry as a perennially open door. Gary and Smith without Mercillus lack support. Garvin doesn’t seem back to where he was and Galeai is just too slight to do more than situationally rush. Is this what is making Barry play his DBs so soft or did he bet on Mayfield being that bad and try to tempt them away from the run?

Offensively, we really missed MVS, but we can’t just throw to Adams and Lazard. If we are playing 3 or 4 WRs, we have to establish them as targets in order to lessen the focus on those 2. I love Jones, but in the second half the situation was screaming for Dillon. LaFleur really needs to rethink how he handles those two.

porupack is right. The Packers are fighting the God of Injury to a draw so far. But Father Time is his teammate, and not having Z Smith and Alexander is showing up in both large and small ways. At some point this defense will break due to the lack of core players, and the offense is approaching the same condition. While I have been hard on Joe Barry, both he and his are assistant coaches are adjusting the scheme to max out their players who are on the field. Yes that means keeping the offense in front and limiting either splash plays or deep hits. By squeezing down on the red zone the Packers have been able to limit the damage. (So Far) Side Notes: This ref crew dumped most of the current PI and LOS calls yesterday. They called a playoff game. The difference between a regular season game and yesterday was striking. Both Charles Woodson and Leroy Butler would have had no problems in pass coverage at all. The Browns running the ball played into the Packers defense. To put it bluntly, even if you run the ball, you are running the clock, and the clock favored the Packers. So the Browns had no choice but to throw at the end of game, which played into the cover the Packers were running. But that is how the NFL has so tilted the game, that a solid run game is a negative factor in close games.

This was the kind of game Tampa's defensive backs play all the time: a lot of bumping, grabbing, and clutching. They struggle when refs get ticky tack.

The weaknesses that were evident before the season began are rearing their ugly heads now; lousy DL and lack of a #2 receiver.

Most fans wanted Lowry and Lancaster gone and somehow they're the starting defensive linemen. Both are slow, both get trampled regularly, and neither provides much pass rush. Lowry was being lauded earlier this year for a few good games but we just got a preview of what it will be like having to rely on those two to stop playoff running backs and running QBs.

People posting how much we missed MVS is a real indication of the sad state of the receiver room. MVS has 25 catches all year. He's never likely to catch more than a couple of passes a game. He's proven that over the years. The same with Lazard.
The way the playoffs stack up at the moment if we manage to hold onto the bye we'll have to beat both Dallas and Tampa Bay. Dallas sent out a full complement of receivers tonight, scoring five TDs in the first half... Lamb, Cooper, Gallup, and Schultz. Tampa even with their best receiver, Godwin, down will still send out Evans, AB, and Gronk not to mention the little speed guy who torched King last year.

The poor play of the offense in the 4th quarter usually comes down to Rodgers looking for Adams because no one else can get open. It hurt this week and it killed us in last year's championship game when Rodgers simply had no one to throw to with the game on the line.

As almost every year, Rodgers takes us to the playoffs, but then the bottom falls out. This team has looked awful for two weeks now. Same soft D, same inability to finish, as we've seen for ten years.

Minnesota game will be a real test of the coach's ability to find answers.

PFF grades are out. Time to see if my eye tests and those in the comments stack up with PFF:

TOP 5 Offense & Defense:
1. Adams - 85.6
2. AR - 84.7
3. Jones - 84.1
4 Runyan - 76.6 Good run and pass pro grades.
5. Newman - 73.2 Great run blocking grade, but allowed 3 pressures/

1. Gary - 82.0 5 pressures 5 pressures, three stops
2. Lowry - 71.8 5 pressures, one sack
3. Clark - 70.0 5 pressures, 3 stops
4. Campbell - 64.7
5. Amos - 64.4 Good coverage with one rec on 4 targets for just 8 yds.

[It is not surprising that the 4th and 5th best defensive grades tumbled to 64. Pressure on Mayfield was good, so the pressures don't surprise me.]

Bottom 5 on Offense and Defense:

1. St. Brown: 52.4 strong blocking, nothing receiving.
2. Tyler Davis - 52.5 average blocking, but just 13 snaps
3. Deguara - 54.8 poor receiving grade
4. Lewis - 59.9 poor receiving grade
5. Patrick - 62.9 Good pass pro, bad run blocking. That's the book on him.

1. Krys Barnes - 30.1 Poor run and coverage 6/6 passes for 77 yds.
2. Tipa Galeai - 33.8 Poor run and rush and coverage
3. Lancaster - 47.6 34 snaps struggled to hold the point of attack
4. Slaton - 51.4
5. Black - 52.7. 11 snaps. Meh

What is interesting is that intercepting 2 passes puts Douglas above 52.7 and below a 64.4 grade. Since Clark and Lowry each had 5 pressures, their pass rush grades were good, meaning that their run grades probably were in the fifties or around 60. Campbell was not terrible according to PFF but he had been at 82 for the season, so a 64.7 is a one game stumble. Only Amos has a grade so all the rest of the DBs are also between 52 and 64.

Lowest team tackling grade this year.
GB missed 9 tackles, including 4 by Amos/Savage.
CLE missed 11 tackles.
AR under pressure 26% of the time. Mayfield 34%
Mayfield threw 3 INTs from a clean pocket.

Stats: per PFF as reported by Zach Kruse.

I guess I am surprised that Mayfield was not under pressure more than 33% of the time. I am surprised that anyone on the DL got a quality starter grade, much less two players. I suppose they were for pass rush rather than run defense, but still.

Overall, GB only gave up 22 points. They only scored 24. Both are around average or just slightly above average.

At least two of the interceptions came from plays where Mayfield was in a large pocket without pressure. I know he hadn’t been practicing, but he looked awful. The worst QB performance I’ve seen from an opponent this year.

Barnes was awful. No way to sweeten that. Late and out of position on the ground and just lost in the passing game. I’m less down on Savage than some, but partly because I really do not like how he is being used over the last two games. He’s small deep safety not an ILB or man cover corner.

Somewhat baffled by the CB grades given the lack of completions against them and interceptions made. I keep coming back to the number of times Lowry was trounced by a runner and then look at his grade. We can’t have a starter who is that ineffective against the run, no matter that he got pressures.

Agree with your comment.

The only thing I might question is on Savage. Due to the 4.36 speed, I envisioned a deep safety who could range over to help a CB contest passes and/or make INTs himself. Somebody like Nick Collins or Earl Thomas. Despite that speed, I just don't see that from Savage. He actually looks better to me closer to the line of scrimmage than he does as a traditional deep safety.

OTOH, it can take 3 or 4 years for a safety to really develop. Nick Collins stats took a huge leap in his 4th season, the first time he made a pro bowl and made the 2nd team all-pro. This is Savage's 3rd season, so perhaps I need to exercise more patience.
