Packers Snap Counts Versus The Saints: Week Three

The Packers elevated Patrick Taylor and Corey Balletine to the game day roster.  That is Taylor's third elevation.  Will the Packers sign him to the 53 or try to do the same thing they did last season when they released him and then re-signed Taylor, thus allowing three more elevations.  What the team really thinks about Emmanuel Wilson and AJ Dillon will be important.

The inactive list looked like a who's who of starters: David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, Aaron Jones, Christian Watson, Jaire Alexander, along with Anthony Johnson, Jr., and Zayne Anderson.  Caleb Jones and Sean Rhyan (along with QB Sean Clifford) did not play, so the Packers did have eight offensive linemen active, allowing them to elevate two players from the practice squad.

Player Snaps % STs
Myers 79 100 2-8%
Runyan 79 100 2-8%
Newman 79 100 2-8%
Walker 79 100 2-8%
Tom 76 96 None
Nijman 3 4 6-24%

The offensive line can pass block.  They allowed just one sack and three quarterback hits on 44 pass attempts.  It helps that Jordan Love moves around in the pocket pretty well and has young legs that can get him out of trouble, but the pass blocking is pretty solid.  The Saints' excellent defensive front six got some consistent push, though, so there the ball did have to come out on time.

The run blocking was once again not very good.  The Packers gained 95 rushing yards on 26 carries for a 3.7-yard average.  The running backs gained 45 yards on 16 carries for a 2.81-yard average, with Keisean Nixon's 11-yard scamper pushing the non-quarterback rushing average to 3.29-yards per carry.

Penalties also hampered the Packers.  Runyan was called for holding on the first offensive snap, followed immediately by a false start on Royce Newman to make it first and 25.  Zach Tom later had a false start in the first half that turned a third and five into a third and ten, which led to a punt.  Jayden Reed also was called for holding, turning a second and five into second and fifteen, leading to another punt.  On third an five, the Packers were called for an illegal formation, turning a third and five into a third and ten, which led to another punt.  Emmanuel Wilson's poor throw back to Jordan Love on a flea flicker play (technically a fumble since the throw hit the ground) ruined the timing of the play such that Love's wild heave towards a wide open Dontavion Wicks was incomplete, leading to a turnover on downs.

Altogether, the Packers had 4 possessions in the first half (5 if one counts a one-play kneel down to end the half), and penalties derailed four of their possessions.  In the second half, the Packers' first two possessions featured a false start on Musgrave and an offensive pass interference penalty on Toure, one of which ended in an interception and the other in a punt.  Thus, two of the Packers' six (seven if one counts the three kneel downs) possessions in the second half were hampered by miscues.  [True, some of these penalties were not on the offensive line but I deemed it helpful to lay them out in one section to show how the Packers shot themselves in the foot for much of the game.  It would be nice to see the offense overcome some of its missteps.]

Zach Tom left the game with a knee injury late in the fourth quarter.  He has been the Packers best lineman this year, so his swift return for the Thursday night game against Detroit would be most welcome.

Player Snaps % STs
Love 79 100
Clifford DNP

Love completed 22 of 44 attempts (50%) for 259 yards (5.88-yards/attempt) with one touchdown and one interception, good for a 66.4 passer rating.  The interception came on a third and 14 pass to Doubs some 47 yards downfield, and since there was no return, it was as good as a punt.  Love had to throw into very tight windows repeatedly and it seemed like most of the passes were contested.  The Saints finished with a whopping 13 passes defensed.  The referees let them play, particularly Alontae Taylor, who while he didn't always get his head turned around prior to the arrival of the pass managed not to bump into the body of the receiver.  Jordan Love persevered and got it done, throwing for 185 yards and a touchdown in the second half while running for another touchdown.  The Saints disguised some blitzes by CB Alontae Taylor, one of which led to a clear route to Love and the Saints' only sack.  Love gained 39 yards on 9 carries for a 4.3-yard average, including a big 24-yard scramble down the sideline.

Player Snaps % STs
Dillon 41 52 None
Taylor 31 39 8-32%
Wilson 8 10 None
Nixon 1 1 13-52%

AJ Dillon gained 33 yards on 11 carries for a 3.0-yard average.  His best run came off left end on a third and nine when he gained 14 yards.  There was not happening running into the middle of the Saints' defense.  Wilson gained 6 yards on 3 carries and Taylor gained 6 yards on 2 carries.  Wilson added one catch for 6 more yards while Taylor gained 23 yards on 3 receptions.  Taylor was targeted four times but stopped short when Love expected him to continue vertically on a little pass into the flat.  Keisean Nixon had one carry for 11 yards around right end on a first and ten.  However, that possession ended in a punt after Alontae Taylor sacked Love.

Player Snaps % STs
Musgrave 68 86 7-28%
Deguara 17 22 20-80%
Kraft 10 13 10-40%
Sims 3 4 3-12%

Luke Musgrave caught 6 of 8 targets for 49 yards and an 8.2-yard average with a long of 12.  While so far he hasn't turned any of these short passes into an explosive play, he does seem to be building a connection with Jordan Love and is the clear #1 TE.  Musgrave was wide open down the middle but Love simply missed him.  Sooner or later Musgrave is going to have a huge day.  Deguara, Kraft and Sims had no stats on offense.  Kraft played more snaps than Sims.  Deguara had a solo tackle on special teams.

Player Snaps % STs
Doubs 68 86 None
Reed 52 66 4-16%
Wicks 52 66 None
Toure 33 42 None
Heath 11 14 4-16%

Romeo Doubs caught 5 of 12 targets for 73 receiving yards (14.6 yds/rec and 6.08 yds/target), one touchdown.  He had a long of 30.  Doubs also drew a 22-yard pass interference penalty on Isaac Yiadom.  Jayden Reed caught 3 of 7 targets for 63 yards (21/rec and 9/attempt).  He also had a long of 30 yards.  Wicks caught 4 of 6 attempts for 45 yards, and drew a 45-yard pass interference penalty.  Both interference penalties came on the same drive, accounting for 67 of the 80-yard touchdown drive, which was capped off by a two-point conversion to Toure to cut the score to 17 to 11.  Explosive plays were in short supply against the Saints.  Toure otherwise had no receptions.  Malik Heath was targeted twice but had no receptions.  I would have liked to have seen Heath come back towards the pass a little harder on one of the targets.  The receivers didn't get a lot of separation on their routes, making things difficult for Jordan Love.  It helped that the Saints had to play Yiadom on the outside.  Yiadom played 111 ST snaps for New Orleans in 2022 but no defensive snaps, and this season he had only played 4 snaps for the Saints prior to this game.  Against the Packers, Yiadom played 63 snaps.  It seems to me that the Packers could have focused on Yiadom earlier and more often, though Yiadom finished with 4 passes defensed, while Alontae Taylor had 5.

Player Snaps % STs
Clark 51 84 5-20%
Brooks 28 46 5-20%
Wyatt 27 44 None
Slaton 26 43 7-28%
Wooden 10 16 None

Kenny Clark was a force all game.  Clark had 4 tackles (3 solo) with a sack and multiple pressures.  TJ Slaton and Wyatt each had 2 tackles (1 solo).  Brooks batted down a pass and Wooden had no statistics.  That is a surprising number of snaps for Brooks.  Wooden seeing a decreased workload is not a surprise after his performance last week against the Falcons.

The Saints gained 77 rushing yards on 19 carries, or 3.5 yards per carry.  The Saints gained just 28 yards on the ground in the second half.  The Saints did have a long run of 19 yards which came in the first half, but otherwise there were no long gains on the ground given up.  The Saints scored only 10 points on offense, and had 6 straight possessions in the second half during which they did not score, though that required the Saints to miss a potentially game-winning 46-yard field goal.  The Packers would have gotten the ball back with just over a minute left in the game with two timeouts, down by one 2 points, had the field goal been made.

Player Snaps % STs
Walker 61 100 9-36%
P. Smith 43 70 1-4%

Hollins 20 33 6-24%
Van Ness 12 20 None
Campbell  11 18 1-4%
Wilson 8 13 19-76%
Cox 1 2 None

Rashan Gary had 3 sacks for 20 yards, including one that ended Derek Carr's day.  Gary had 4 quarterback hits and multiple pressures.  He was a large part of the Packers pass rush in just 23 snaps.  The Saints threw the ball 34 times.  Gary destroyed RT Ryan Ramcyck, who is making $19M per year, several times.  Enagbare added a quarterback hit and had a tackle for loss among his 4 tackles (3 solo).  Justin Hollins had 2 assisted tackles.  Preston Smith had one assisted tackle.  Van Ness had one solo tackle.  Brenton Cox had no statistics.  Quay Walker had 7 tackles (3 solo) while McDuffie, playing in place of Devondre Campbell who left with an ankle injury, had 6 tackles (5 solo).  Campbell and Wilson each had one assisted tackle.

Player Snaps % STs
Savage 61 100 9-36%
Ford 61 100 None
Douglas 61 100 13-52%
Nixon 45 74 13-52%
Valentine 32 52 9-36%
Ballentine 30 49 18-72%
Leavitt     22-88%
Owens     18-72%

Rudy Ford led the team with 7 tackles (6 solo) plus 2 passes defensed while Savage had 6 tackles (5 solo).  Corey Ballentine added 4 solo tackles and a pass defensed.  He wasn't perfect but for a special teams player he was fine.  Nixon had 3 solo tackles and a pass defensed.  Rasul Douglas had 2 solo tackles and a pass defensed.  Valentine had no statistics and left the game with a biceps injury.  The Saints threw for 204 yards (175 yards if sack yardage were deducted), and Olave had 104 of them.  Olave is going to get his, most games.  The opposing quarterbacks did complete 68% of their passes, if just for 6.0 yards per attempt.  The defensive backs came up and usually made the tackle.

This was a quality win.  The Saints are a tough out, at least as long as their top 5 DBs, both LBs, and the bulk of that defensive line are healthy.  New Orleans' cap woes have left them a little thin, particularly at LB and CB.  The Saints have been fortunate that two of their oldest players, Demario Davis and Cam Jordan, both 34, are still playing at a very high level.  Those two have also played in every game possible since 2012, except for Jordan, who missed one game last year.  The Packers offense could blossom with the return of their key players.

WR: 2.73

RB: 1.02

TE:  1.24

DL: 2.33

LB: 3.92  [ILB: 1.92 - OLB: 2.0]

DB:  4.75

I was admiring how well the pass protection was later in that game - I think Love has incredible pocket presence as well and just moves around to make it so difficult on the defense.

These snap counts obviously show so many important injuries, but I think a major bright spot is Savage playing well and being healthy. The one area where GB really can't afford an injury because of lack of depth is safety, and so far Savage is playing much better football than I think most were anticipating. A huge early plus this year.

I hope GB is just being overly cautious with Watson because I can't wait to see this team line up with Watson, Doubs, Wicks, Reed, Musgrave and Aaron Jones - with a QB that isn't afraid to keep the defense honest and run if that's the best option. Let me know what I need to sacrifice to the hamstring gods to make that happen.

The Packers' offense reminds me of a fine motor that is misfiring and needs a couple of parts replaced. The parts are in stock but they just need some time to install them. At least, one hopes that a healthy Bakh and Jenkins will bye an large fix a part of the running issues. I hope Watson is ready to go and can build on what he showed last year and I assume the return of Aaron Jones will be seamless. The only thing is though is that the parts are not new; rather, they are refurbished parts, so one has to hope them will hold up over time. Jordan Love looks good enough to put points on the board with such an offensive supporting cast.

The Saints offense isn't good. It was 21st last year and it is 25th this year while it has averaged just 17.67 points. Their output against the Packers was really just 10 points, so that's a good effort even though NO isn't a juggernaut. Their rushing attack ranks 22nd this year and it was 19th last year. They didn't have Kamara or anyone vaguely resembling Bijan Robinson. The OL is not great. The win did show resilience and perseverance. The Lions while tough should be interesting at home.

I think your per-play averages on D are off, because apparently the Packers played about 14 defenders most of the game...but if that's what it takes to hold a team to 10 offensive points, then that's what it takes!

;)

IN EDIT: NVM--I see what you did with the LB.

I went into edit and attempted to clarify. I don't remember if I had the offensive numbers up or if I lost them while editing (with fat fingers, likely). I approve of 2.73 WR on the field on average per play because I never thought GB could beat this NO defense by running the ball. Most of the rushing yards came outside the hash marks.

Isaac Yiadom played 95 brutal snaps for GB in 2021. He played 4 snaps in 2022 and 4 more snaps in 2023 prior to the GB game. Yiadom played 63 snaps against GB. I can't help but think the Packers' WRs should have been toasting him all game. Oh well, that's just a minor thing.

Thanks, TGR.

I was watching the game and was dissapointed with so many no play mistakes. Fans at Lambeau Field was amazing through first 2 Q, but somewhat lost their "mojo" after intetception. It was restored after Carlson FG and finaly some points in the game. I must say that I started to believe in comeback after 2 points conversion. I read that some fans were against that decision, bit I'm always for agressive demeanor to the game - "no risk, no profit"!

I also belive that even if Saints scored that FG at the end, Packers would win - they would need only 30 to 35 yards to give Carlson the chance to ice the game with ~1 minute to play and 2 TO.

It is also interesting that Packers lost last week despite being 1+ in turn-overs. Last game that happened to Saints!

It is not negligible that most of the players on Packers squad played their first official game at Lambeau Field - lot of adrenaline and pressure on them, so mistakes were expected. We had to wait 3Qs to things settle down for them, so that they can show their talent.

This is the huge win for young team and historic come back from deficit in Packers history!

I will go and watch Atlanta at Lions later to see how Lions were able to stop Atlanta and keep them on only 6 points!

good point - lot of emphasis on J.Love having his first start at Lambeau, kind of forgot that was true for quite a few guys thrown into starting roles

The Lions protected their QB very well, they did little in the running game, but that opened up their offense. The massive difference was that an unheralded D held Robinson to 2.2 yards per carry consistently and still racked up 7 sacks (their rush is their defensive strong point admittedly).

I agree. They just take away their running game and press their QB. It was far away of solid game, but Lions scored 1 TD by passing and 1 TD running (Goff!!!). That was mostly all of them. Atlanta lost in running game and was completely ineffective!

Wow, Rashan Gary only played 23 snaps--barely a third of the defensive plays. He was the only pass rusher who was having any kind of success, so the pass rush would've been really anemic without those 23 Gary snaps. The Saints QBs usually had time to throw, and it's a credit to our secondary that they held up as well as they did without their best player and with his replacement getting knocked out of the game halfway through.

Cubbygold is right that the improved play of Darnell Savage has been a big plus. Rudy Ford is not very good, but he seems to get the most out of his limited talent. It was sad to see him with a shot at an interception on a deep ball, but he's just too short and apparently has no ability to jump so he couldn't even contest for the ball. He still looks like a scrappy special teams guy who is a starting safety by default.

Kudos to Corey Ballantine for playing well enough. They had him on Chris Olave much of the time. That could have been a disaster, but it wasn't. Rasul Douglas seems to be quietly off to a good start this year. Opposing teams don't seem to be throwing at him too much, and he is not giving up many big plays. The secondary kept everything in front of them against the Saints.

I didn't notice a drop-off in quality when De'Vondre Campbell was replaced with Isaiah McDuffie. It's a credit to McDuffie but maybe doesn't look so good for Campbell.

Once Carr got hurt, the Saints went into a very McCarthy-esque "run-run-pass-punt" mode and didn't seem to be willing to ask Winston to do very much. When they were behind and needed to move the ball, they went after Ballentine...which I think any of us would've done.

Yes, the Saints could be guilty of playing not to lose, but I'll take it. Winston is one of the more talented backup QBs in the league and has more experience with the team than Carr does, so I was surprised they did not push the ball downfield more than they did.

The most interesting snap counts to me is the DL. The other positions are about as we would have guessed them to be especially with injuries and whatnot.

Clark 51 84
Brooks 28 46
Wyatt 27 44
Slaton 26 43
Wooden 10 16

Clark obviously being a beast gets the most. But 2nd most was Brooks. Now him and Wyatt and Slaton were basically the same. But It is interesting that Brooks got more snaps then the rest. And I'm also a little surprised that Wooden got so few of snaps. Brooks had almost 3 times more snaps then Wooden.

I think it's pretty clear that Josiah Deguara will be playing somewhere else in 2024. Maybe he'll take a low-money deal to stay, but at this stage he's not much more than a core ST player.

Yes. We aren’t really using the H back role in this O and he’s just OK for what he’s doing. I think we can find a better FB or whatever LaFleur really wants out if the non TE/RB role if we still need that. Then again, we don’t really have an identity as a running team as our run blocking was dreadful again.

#84 Tyler Davis was our HB. DeGuara was supposed to be his backup. When 84 went down for the season I figured the position was abandoned.

I don't know about next year and Deguara, but if Leavitt plays 88% ST snaps and zero safety, then I think the Pack can make room for Deguara in this year's offense. The Pack has a sort of pistol winged counter tackle run package of plays where Deguara pulls from a flanker back position, and has to make a key block. He run blocks on interior plays also, and plays 80% of ST snaps.

When a D gives up only 10, we better win the game.

Special teams gave up the punt return, which is bad, but made up for it with the field goal miss at the end (have to give them that even if it was their kicker/holder).

Wins don't come easy in the NFL (unless you're Miami). Shooting yourselves in the foot for three quarters and getting the win, isn't sustainable. This is another test to see how the coaches address this problem. The young guys are going to get their penalties, but the O-line is all people who've been around and that has to be cleaned up.

I'm not going to give credit to the special teams for a missed field goal that they did not block. Special teams were thoroughly outplayed and look like the same middle-of-the-road operation that they were last year. Looks like Bisaccia made the right call on kicker Anders Carlson though, and that's the most important part of the special teams.

LVN must have been on a snap count - and more affected by his injury than the report suggests.

Kenny Clark played more snaps than you would otherwise want from him - I'll be looking to see if the other linemen play more snaps against the Lions, or if this a theme.

50 snaps per game is fine, imo. Paying him $17M, so he can't be a half time player. Other DTs play 850 snaps per season and so should Clark. 17 games x 50 snaps = 850.

34 year old Cam Jordan played 790 snaps last year, which is the only season he played fewer than 800 snaps since 2012. And that's because Jordan missed one game in 2022 or he would have been well over 800. Agree that if Clark played as a 2 gapping NT, his snaps would have to go down, but he's a DL. Gotta play.

The great:

Amazing game all around. Defense allowed in reality 3 points (where NO wasn’t gifted a very short field). Green Bay despite using nickel a lot stayed in their base defense the entire game on first and sometimes second down. I was downright amazed when I saw a six man zone pressure and some very different looks than what’s been shown on film the first three weeks. I’d like to see that aggressive mindset carry over to the last series instead of playing prevent with a vanilla five man pass rush with no zone drop to help out the flats. Barry also mixed in different coverages but would like to see a lot more D line stunts, twists etc. for those times Gary isn’t a one man wrecking crew.

Offensively, what is there to say besides it appeared to be the standard growing pains of a young roster. Jordan Love at times looks like Rodgers out there peeved at his young WR running the wrong routes. However give credit where it’s due. Resilience is an attribute you can’t tell anyone they need to have. You either quit or you don’t. 17 points down in the fourth quarter is a tall task for any team veteran laden or young. Once the stupid penalties stopped the offense got some traction. Including the forth down they went for (turning it over on downs inside the 5 yard line) they rallied off what easily was 4 straight drives that should’ve came away with points.

I love Lafluer going for two. That took balls. It’s easy to hide behind the safe play but he said to hell with it and was willing to live with his decision. Even though he was aggressive the entire game and it wasn’t great results I’d take that over Mike McCarthys play it safe play calling any day.

The not so great:

AJ Dillon is a finesse back trapped in a bruisers body. He’s just not the kind of back who’s going to punish defenders. I’m gonna be pretty upset if they extend him whether discounted or not. The offensive running game is not the same without Jones. This pick wasn’t a good use of a second rounder and I can definitely see where someone like Rodgers would be pissed. It’s one thing if Jones ends up walking and it’s the new franchise running back but why the hell are we wasting second round picks on back up running backs? Back up running backs who don’t produce I might add. Call me crazy, I think Jonathan Taylor for Christian Watson is actually not a bad trade if they can possibly have a draft pick thrown in. Hear me out…. Hamstrings are notoriously consistent. Once you’ve pulled your hamstring it’s gonna keep happening. It sucks. I know this personally. Watson has missed of a possible 20 games, he’s been unavailable for 11 of those. It’s not like there’s a ton of wear and tear. We know Jonathan Taylor can be a bell cow. I just wonder if this play action offense works better with a power running back with Jones added in for keeping legs fresh and 3rd down receiving. The offense has played solid up to now I’m not sure Watson is the missing link to unlocking huge production. Don’t crucify me it’s just a thought. You all can relax.

Special teams:

Somebody tell the returner you get the ball at the 25 these days if it’s a touchback. So no need to return a ball from 9 yards deep especially if you are only going to get to the 18-19. I wholly understand what they are doing, they want teams scouting them to know that they will return the kickoff at any time. This wears out the kick coverage because they’ve always gotta be ready. I just wonder if every single kick off that’s ten yards deep is worthy of a return.

The punt return for a touchdown I knew was gonna be trouble when I saw them double team both gunners. They couldn’t get away from the blocks and that was that. If those players down disrupt the return it’s gonna be a solid return 10 out of 10 times. It was one of those deals that it was a good play call more than the Packers screwing it up.
