Packers Snap Counts - Week One, 2024

The Packers fall to the Eagles in Sao Paulo due to penalties, poor tackling, and no pass rush.

The Packers elevated Ellis Merriweather from the Practice Squad.  Although active, Merriweather and Andre Dillard did not play.  The inactive players were Brenton Co\x, Arron Mosby, Malik Heath, MarShawn Lloyd, Travis Glover, and Kadeem Telfort.  The Packers elected not to elevate Sean Clifford.

OFFENSIVE LINE:

Player Snaps ST
Walker 67 100 7/23%
Jenkins 67 100 7/23%
Tom 67 100 7/23%
Myers 65 97
Rhyan 42 63 7/23%
Morgan 28 42 7/23%
Monk     7/23%

The Packers allowed 5 quarterback hits and 2 sacks.  Those are good numbers, but it seemed like Love was under consistent pressure.  The Packers were called for offensive holding 3 times, including two by Rasheed Walker.  They were also called for 2 false starts, one by Rasheed Walker and the other by Zach Tom.  Walker did not have a good night, overall, though he did get way downfield to throw a block that led to a touchdown.

The Packers' running backs gained 130 yards on 20 carrier for an impressive 6.5-yard average.  Add in Jayden Reed's 33-yard gain on a jet sweep and the Packers gained 163 yards on 21 carries for a 7.8-yard average.  The line did open some nice holes but the offense was choppy, with several very long runs and a lot of unsuccessful runs.  The offensive line for the most part got pushed around.

RUNNING BACKS:

Player Snaps % ST
Jacobs 49 73
Em Wilson 16 24

Jacobs gained 84 yards on 16 carries for a 5.3-yard average and caught both of his targets for 20 receiving yards.  Emanuel Wilson added 46 yards on just 4 carrier for an average of 11.5.      Despite those numbers, it never felt like running the ball was their bread and butter, go-to, plan.  There were quite a few big gains wrapped around runs that went no where.

Emanuel Wilson looked good and just when I wondered why he was not getting more snaps Jacobs went off for a big gain.  I am going to wait to evaluate Jacobs (that is, compare him to Aaron Jones) until I see him on a normal field.  Initially, I was unimpressed by Jacobs but seemed to get quicker and started to make people miss as the game progressed.  Emanuel Wilson belongs on an NFL roster.

QUARTERBACKS:

Player Snaps %
Love 65 97
Willis 2 3

Love did not have a good night.  He finished 17 of 34 for 260 yards (7.65 yards/attempt)with 2 TDs and 1 interceptions.  He had a passer rating of 83.0.  I lost count of how many turnover-worthy throws he made and the number of passes that were poorly placed.  Aaron Nagler counted at least four dropped passes, and while that seems to me to be a trifle harsh towards the receivers, they did Love few favors.  Love had happy feet at times and tried to make some passes off platform, sometimes with an odd hop that was nearly disastrous.  It sure is great when he can pull it off.

TIGHT ENDS:

Player Snaps % ST
Kraft 64 96 26/52%
Musgrave 17 25
Sims 1 1 8/26%

Tucker Kraft caught 2 of his 3 targets for 37 yards.  He also was called for offensive holding and was involved in the penalty for illegal motion when two Packers were in motion at the same time at the time of the snap.  Musgrave was targeted twice but had no receptions in limited playing time.  Kurt Benkert placed the blame for Love's interception on poor route-running by Musgrave.  You can check out his tweet here.

WIDE RECEIVERS:

Player Snaps % ST
Doubs 58 87
Reed 48 72 2/6%
Watson 42 63
Wicks 31 46
Melton 8 12 9/29%

Jayden Reed caught 4 of his 6 targets for 138 yards, a 34.5-yard average with a long of 70 and a TD.  Reed added a 33-yard touchdown run on a jet sweep.  Romeo Doubs caught 4 of 7 targets for 50 yards.  Watson played a lot of snaps to produce just 13 yards on 3 receptions with a long of 6 yards.  He did score a touchdown on a well-schemed slant.  Wicks did not catch any of his three targets.  Melton had just 8 offensive snaps and recovered a fumble but had no carries or targets.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Player Snaps % ST
Clark 56 74
Slaton 40 53 12/39%
Wyatt 36 47
Brooks 20 26 8/26%
Wooden     2/6%

The Packers did a good job in the first half against the opposing running back and in containing Jalen Hurts.  The Eagles gained 47 yards on 17 carries for a 2.8-yard average.  That slipped in the second half as the Eagles gained 97 yards on 21 carries in the second half for a 4.62-yard average.  The Eagles gained 144 yards on 38 rushes and 2 touchdowns.  Despite the success in the first half against the run, the Eagles scored 17 points in both the first and second halves.  The emphasis on containing Hurts greatly undermined the Packers pass rush.  Hurts frequently had excellent time in the pocket.

Clark was often double-teamed.  He managed a few pressures but only had 2 tackles (1 solo).  TJ Slaton got a lot of snaps.  He had 5 tackles (1 solo).  Brooks had 4 tackles (2 solo).  Wyatt also played a lot of snaps but had just 1 solo tackle for loss and he recovered a fumbled snap.  Wooden had no statistics and surprisingly played only 2 special teams snaps.

The Eagles ran 76 offensive players.  I would not have expected a 4-man rotation on the interior defensive line, even though the temperature was only 63 degrees at kickoff time.

EDGE:

Player Snaps % ST
Smith 54 71
Gary 49 64
Enagbare 30 39 17/55%
Van Ness 19 25 11/35%

Gary was at least active.  He had 3 tackles (1 solo), a sack, 2 QB hits, and a pass defensed.  The sack was when the Eagles right tackle (Lane Johnson) incorrectly thought the play had been called dead and Gary just ran around Johnson, who barely got out of his stance.  For the most part, Johnson nullified Gary.  Van Ness had 2 solo tackles but got little to no pressure.  Smith had 2 tackles (1 solo) and played the run well and had a couple of pressures at most.  Enagbare had no stats.  There just was not enough pass rush and what there was did not come fast.

The Eagles ran 76 offensive players.  I would not have expected a 4-man rotation for the Edge position, even though the temperature was only 63 degrees at kickoff time.

LINEBACKER:

Player Snaps % ST
Walker 76 100 6/19%
McDuffie 74 97 9/29%
Er Wilson 15 20 24/77%
Cooper 11 14 7/23%
Hopper     14/45%

Quay Walker had 11 tackles (7 solo), including a tackle for loss.  Walker was out of position when Barkeley scampered up the middle for his 11-yard touchdown run.  The Packers would love to see Walker improve.  McDuffie had 6 tackles (3 solo) and a quarterback hit.  He played the run well but as usual got picked on in coverage.  McDuffie gave up the touchdown to Barkley, though it was a very accurate pass.  Eric Wilson had 4 tackles (3 solo), two of which were tackles for loss. He is a nice player to have on the roster.  Edgerrin Cooper had 3 tackles (2 solo) and a pass defensed.  He looked big and very fast.  After missing so much time during training camp, Cooper's comfort with the playbook might have been limited.  Based on this sample, the Packers will look to having Cooper reduce McDuffie's snaps as the season progresses.

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

Player Snaps % ST
Bullard 76 100 15/48%
McKinney 76 98 13/42%
Alexander 76 100 6/19%
Stokes 67 88
Nixon 52 68 12/39%
Valentine 9 12 16/52%
Ballentine     18/58%
Anderson     18/58%
Williams     16/52%
Olapado     6/19%

Bullard had 11 tackles (7 solo).  He took a bad angle on one play, but it was a pretty good night for a rookie playing in his first game.  Nixon had 7 tackles (6 solo) two of which were tackles for loss.  He had 2 quarterback hits and a pass defensed.  He was certainly active.  He made some nice plays, including when he showed excellent recognition and came to to hit Hurts on a roll out.  Nixon's decision to bring out a kickoff from 9 yards deep was a head-scratcher when the team was down 5 with about 20 seconds left in the game.  Nixon was credited with a 24-yard return but he only got the ball to the 15-yard line.

Alexander had an up and down day.  He got burned on a long completion and gave up multiple completions.  He also had some issues with tackling while making 4 solo tackles.  He did have an interception which he also, like Nixon, decided to bring out of the end zone.  Besides the interception, Alexander had another pass defensed.  Stokes also had some issues with tackling.  McKinney had 4 tackles (3 solo) and an interception.  Things are apt to be difficulty when there is so little pass rush that the opposing quarterback usually has time to go through his progressions, especially when a team can field the likes of Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown.

SPECIALISTS:

Player Snaps % ST
Orzech     10/32%
Whelan     10/32%
Narveson     14/45%

Narveson made both of his extra points and 3 of his 4 field goals.  He missed a 44-yarder while the 3 he made were all short attempts.  Narveson did execute a directional kickoff that landed inside the 5 yard line and resulted in poor field position for Philadelphia.   Whelan punted twice and averaged 37 yards net with one punt inside the 20.

RB: 0.97/snap

TE:  1.22/snap

WR: 2.79/snap

IDL: 2.00/snap

Edge: 2.00/snap

ILBs:  2.32/snap (it now has talent but this seems high for their least productive unit)

DBs: 4.68/snap

Surprising that Luke Musgrave only played 17 snaps. It seems to me that Tucker Kraft was in the flow of the offense while Musgrave was like an extra piece. Love tried to force the ball to him at times.

Playing containment against Jalen Hurts didn't work the way it did against Justin Fields last year. Hurts is a better QB with more weapons. They did blitz at times, but it wasn't effective. Blitzing was not mentioned in the article, maybe because there was so little of it.

It seemed to me like Eric Stokes had a good game, while Jaire Alexander got picked on.

In the end, the Jeff Hafley defense looked very similar to the Joe Barry defense, especially at the end, when they let the Eagles virtually run out the clock when they took over with something like 7 minutes left in the game.

Josh Jacobs eventually found his groove, but it seemed like too little, too late. The time to establish the run was early, and Jacobs couldn't do anything in the first half--mostly due to poor blocking. I was surprised by how much better Saquon Barkley looked compared to Jacobs, even though Jacobs somehow ended up with more yards per carry.

It was a crap night for Jordan Love and the receivers, with the exception of Jayden Reed. They weren't getting open enough and there were lots of bad throws as well as a few drops.

Jaire had a tough game. He needs to improve his tackling drastically.

As far as Jacobs finding his groove maybe it was the OL finally opening a few holes for him.

"Surprising that Luke Musgrave only played 17 snaps"

Agreed--on two levels:
1. Kraft is still working his way back from a torn pec and missed a lot of camp. This signals that Kraft has eclipsed Musgrave on the depth chart.
2. I thought that one of the answers to a physical Philly front would be more 12 personnel. LaF is getting suckered in by 11 personnel again.

"Hurts is a better QB with more weapons."

They kept him in check on the ground. His running had little to do with the outcome after last time when he went wild against the Packers. He's just a better decision-maker and a little more accurate (with a better OL and weapons) than Fields. This bodes well for the Packers defending Anthony Richardson next week.

"It was a crap night for Jordan Love and the receivers, with the exception of Jayden Reed."

I'm definitely eating crow on Reed. I thought they all but threw away that pick when they made it. The guy just makes impact plays.

I don't mean to insult you by quoting PFF in my reply, but what the hell:

"Kraft seems to have completely overtaken Luke Musgrave as the Packers' top tight end. Tonight, the tight end usage followed the same pattern, with Kraft rarely leaving the field and Musgrave only playing in formations with two or more tight ends. Anyone who drafted Musgrave in redraft leagues can drop him. Kraft is a waiver wire consideration."

Kraft is a waiver wire only consideration in my view because LaFleur gets enamored of 11 personnel.

Also from PFF Fantasy article: GB has a predictable WR substitution pattern. "Doubs
was a clear starting wide receiver, only leaving the field for a few plays, which Bo Melton took. Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks were competing for the other outside spot, with Watson playing more snaps in 11 personnel and Wicks playing more in 12 personnel. Jayden Reed played only in 11 personnel, which is consistent with his usage last season." (It also suggests that playing more 2 tight end sets takes Reed off the field, but if he continues at this pace, LaFleur will find a spot for Reed in 2 TEs sets.

Finally:

"Reed primarily faced Avonte Maddox, who allowed a league-high 2.22 yards per coverage snap last season, the worst mark among defenders with at least 75 coverage snaps."

Close game. An average day from Love wins it. Maybe less sloppy play or just a tad bit of luck.

When you review the game tape I challenge you to focus on Quay. DC's may change but in order to be successful, teams need quality mlb's and #7 is not one, especially against the run. He's out of place, hits the wrong hole, or gets sucked up behind blockers far too often. Or flat out whiffs. He'll make a nice play once in a while but overall is very lacking in instincts.

Quay overall seems average. Great athlete who does not have above average instincts. He is the anti-C.J. Mosley (good enough athlete with great natural instincts).

I'll wait for the to hear other's grades, but agree heartily that our ILBs as a group played poorly. Wilson and Cooper looked good to me. We may be seeing Hopper and Cooper sooner than later. I made a point earlier this year that releasing Welch may be a mistake. How did the coaches evaluate these guys when 1/2 of them don't play the pre-season?

In fairness to our Defense, the offense did not help them in the second half, turning the ball back to the Eagles so quickly, and our D obviously wore down.

Cooper was productive with only 11 snaps hopefully he takes over the starting role from McDuffie who was out of position or late on many plays.

The lack of meaningful contact in the preseason was evident, especially early on. This is how a team plays when they're just getting their feet wet.

My biggest impression was the so-so play of both lines. The Eagles defensive line was clearly the winner over the Packers o-line. In the second half they opened a few holes for Jacobs and protected Love but until then, Philly owned them. The Packers d-line had its moments but largely got moved aside for Barkley to run through.
The Packers linebackers proved to be of little assistance.
Way, way too many drops by the receivers. Love wasn't sharp though he was good enough to keep the Eagles defense honest.
Alexander and Stokes were over matched by the Eagles receivers. I liked McKinney and Bullard.
The kicker looks to be ok. At least I don't get nervous stomach when he comes on the field.

Love's injury will likely radically alter what the Packers do. I hope they don't try to put him out there next Sunday. If he has a high ankle sprain, they should put him on the four game IR and let it heal. All likely losses, but he might heal enough to play the rest of the season. This is written before images of his ankle are done.
The worst case scenario has happened and all we can do as fans is ride it out.

The game played out close to what I had thought would happen. The Packers are still a year away and this season looks like one we might have to forget when it's done.

I agree Harry. They seem to start the season very slow each year. To me, that is because they hardly play in the preseason.

I would like for the starters to play at least two series every preseason game in the future.

i just do not think number 7 is an nfl level ILB, and agree with the preceeding post. i have also yet so see anything from van ness or musgrove that warranted their draft position. the quality of play looked like the first game of preseason. MLF is perhaps responsible for leaving 8 points on the field: not having his guys know that 12 men cannot be part of an allignment, and then idiotically going for 2, and if you are going to be dumb enough to go for two at that point in a game then come up with a play that has a chance.

Thanks Renaldo, didn't get to see the game. To sum up your very detailed game recap, this sounded like a team who didn't play in the pre season. Maybe LeFlower could learn something from the best in the game Andy Reid: want to win a super bowl, get your people prepared by game one and play them in the pre season to work out those kinks and be ready to go.
Yes Ravens and Chiefs made some small errors on a few plays (rust) but to me they both looked mid season ready to rock and roll. What you described is either a bad team or a team not in shape and not ready for prime time.

We got Peacock for a month for $6 to be able to watch the game. I don't about anyone else, but that is a terrible way to watch a football game. It seemed that our TV could not handle the motion very well and was very blurry at times.

It was a nightmare trying to fast forward or rewind as well.

Bottom line: It sucks.

A final question for everyone: Everytime I make a comment here at CHTV, I get bumped out and have to click on where I left off to be able to start typing again. It happened 3 times with this post. Anyone else have this problem?

Not sure how you can say that when the Raven’s had like 5 illegal procedures in just the first half. Every team will have some rust, even if they play 1/2 in a pre-season game. Let’s remember, they have live practices with two teams and many practices throughout the pre-season to be prepared. if they score 7 on the first half TO’s they win this game. Give Eagles D some credit.

Arguably, you could say that this first game for Love was more like his performance in the first half of the season last year.

And then Love goes down in the final seconds of the game and has to be helped off the field. Smart move by Love in the pre-season to demand a new gargantuan contract before he's willing to play. What's Love getting, 55 million dollars a year?

Packer defense seems pretty much like last year's defense. Nothing new, seemingly, under the new defensive coordinator. What's Jaire Alexander getting, 21 million dollars a year?

Wow, but it's just the first game of the season, right? Nothing to worry about. Hey, teams have bad games and good games. Obviously, this first game of the season. . . was not a " good " game.

Talk about being rusty. . .

No sinister plot here by Love, sorry. Seriously, do you think he WANTED to get injured? The Packers knew they had to pay up and they did. He came in right where he should be and there is no fault here.

Football is a rough sport and people get injured. The Brewers paid Brandon Woodruff millions this year to ride the bench while his arm heals. This happens in sports where the human body is pushed to the max.

Nope. That's AAV. Pay attention to cap hits. Getting hung up on AAVs is a weak understanding of how contracts and the cap work.

Please! Everyone take a deep breath.
The expectations for this team have been way too high considering again that it's the youngest team in the league. I've watched the Packers and the NFL for 60+ years and it almost always takes a number of games for team to gel after a change of coordinators (defense). It just does! You have to be patient.
Try looking at this from the Eagles side. The expectations for this team is very high and they certainly had very tough game and could have easily lost it.
Remember what happened to both teams last year. That's very likely this year.

Wilson was criminally under used. When a guy comes in and ignites a run game you run with him, certainly you don’t take him out and then try to run it up the gut on the goal line. As to the D, had we capitalized on what it did give us, the result would have been different.

I’m so sick of the OL mentality that run blocking doesn’t matter. It does. It does even more so without Jones as well. It’s that attitude of the coaches as much as the talent. We may have kept Stenavich a season too long if he can’t grasp that.

Love wasn’t terrible. He had periods of inaccuracy, but he was under rapid pressure all night. Had our OL actually pass blocked well (Tom aside), he would have had a better chance. The Eagles OL was much the better. Of the 2 QBs, for me Love was still better. Wicks’s drops in particular were no fault of Love, Watson needs to realize that he has to take the game and opportunities not just be on the field.

Sloppy, ill disciplined and less hungry. Thats on LaFleur. It’s as disappointing as the Love injury. If Love is out, this is not a team built to grind anything. It’s a team that behaves more akin to pampered thoroughbreds rather than fighters. That is on LaFleur and it’s not a winning recipe. If LaFleur can’t grasp that it will undermine his career. Do what you do well, hard and in a disciplined fashion. Lombardi would not be impressed I suspect. Nor would any winning coach I can think of.

If Love is out, with our OL, I doubt any back up is going to help us as we would need to lean on the run game. I just get the feeling that this coaching staff exists in a mental bubble and doesn’t learn lessons.

Eagles played on the Pack side of the ball all night. So once again the lines get handled by a bigger nastier group.Don’t know how that improves vs every line they’ll encounter that’s bigger nastier. A finesse team coached by MLF…anyone surprised?

Agreed. In game adjustments would've meant don't keep going to Wicks, he had an off night. And do keep going to Emmanuel Wilson. Nothing against Josh Jacobs, but play the hot hand.

I'm not sure what they did with O line personnel, but I'm not sure they're using the best possible combinations?

I find the field issues baffling. It’s a hybrid turf very like Lambeau. The issue is that Sao Paulo gets night dews as the air cools and releases humidity. Soccer is played at night and traction is equally key. I find it baffling that neither team nor the NFL wouldn’t know if the phenomenon and find a way to anticipate and overcome it. Maybe ask the soccer team ….

The local crowd was impressive, the NFL was not. It’s about more than just logos. Conditions matter to the quality of product. Do your research. That field wasn’t bad, the understanding of conditions and preparations were.

Just a quick comment, TGR. I wish to thank you for the thorough re-cap. I totally agree with 99% of your comments and especially appreciate your recognition of R. Walker throwing a key block 25 yards downfield - on the opposite side of the field!- on Reed's reverse for a TD. Although, he really did not play well at times, how many OTs do you know who can and WILL do that! Walker is one of the young guys that needed more playing time during the preseason. It's obvious his feet and hand placement were off in this game. His hustle and desire are not in question.

Walker looked rusty to me. I thought he improved as the game wore on. So many of the starters on O are really pretty Inexperienced. The majority of those looked like they needed some preseason work against a live opponent to me. Walker was one. Reed was an exception. Emmanuel Wilson looked far sharper earlier than the much more rested Jacobs.
