Packers Still Have Plenty to Play for in 2023

The Green Packers are 3-6 just past the halfway mark of the 2023 NFL season. Barring a major, unexpected turnaround, the Packers will not be a playoff team this season. So, the most important thing the organization needs to do is to show progress and figure out how to improve their chances to return to the postseason in 2024.

The biggest issue is to determine whether Jordan Love should be the quarterback this team should build around for the future. Love has made some progress in recent games, but he still has a way to go.

Against Pittsburgh, he did a much better job of throwing accurately downfield and working through his progressions.

Thus far, the Packers are 1-4 in one-score games. Love had a chance to win all four of those games with late drives. Clearly, he is still learning what it takes to win close games in the NFL.

Remember, in 2008, Aaron Rodgers’ first season as the starter, the Packers went 1-7 in one score games with the only win coming in Week 1. That is not to compare Love to Rodgers, but to simply point out that learning how to win close games in the NFL is often a process for NFL quarterbacks.

The Packers also need to figure out what to do with defensive coordinator Joe Barry. The Packers defense is presently 11th in points allowed and 11th in yards allowed. Statistically, that sounds good but there are obviously issues that need to be resolved.

The Packers still can’t stop the run consistently. Yes, they emphasize stopping the pass and preventing splash plays. But last week against Pittsburgh, for example, the Packers defense played a light box against a team that clearly wanted to run the football and had a below average quarterback.

Instead of forcing Kenny Pickett to win the game with his arm, the Packers employed a nickel defense early in the game, even when the Steelers were inside the Green Bay five-yard line. A combination of bad strategy and poor tackling and execution led to the Pack giving up more than 200 yards rushing and a loss in a game they could have won.

The Packers defense is also failing to make big plays. They are near the bottom of the NFL with just eight turnovers in nine games. If your defense is designed to prevent big plays, they also need to create big plays. That means interceptions, fumble recoveries and sacks. Unfortunately, the Pack is tied for 29th in the league in turnovers created. They are also 21st in the league in sacks. Big plays are a missing element from this defense.

The future of both the team’s top two running backs is also up in the air. Aaron Jones has missed a lot of games this year due to a nagging hamstring injury. He is approaching 30 and is considered “old” for a running back. Jones also has a high cap number next season. He already took a pay cut to stay in Green Bay this year, but would he do it again?

A.J. Dillon’s rookie contract expires after this season, and he is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. Dillon started slowly this season but has improved in recent weeks. If the Pack decides to move on from Jones, would they also move on from Dillon? If they keep him, at what cost?

The Packers also need to see more of young players like Rasheed Walker and Carrington Valentine to see if they are future starters or role players or worth keeping at all.

The young receiving corps also needs to be sorted out. What role should Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks play on this team?

Who learns the most, who develops the most and who stands out over the last eight games will go a long way to determining the future of these players and of the team. It will help GM Brian Gutekunst figure out what positions need to be emphasized in the draft and in free agency.

The Packers are not likely to make the playoffs this season, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a lot to play for.

Keep improving the LOS. My broken record. My mantra.

No team in the NFL should worry about anything else until they have the LOS secured.

They might have the pieces in house for the D-line, but how would we know?

--Yes, get the O line in order, and with it the running game.
--I have confidence in the receivers further progress.
-- One more big bodied DT/NG.
--Get a very good safety any way we can.

The success of San Francisco and Philadelphia, Kansas City and others, is they have always put a priority on linemen before other players. Maybe the Packers should learn a lesson.

I don't agree with you on this Gil. I think this is a great metric to use to compare Love to Rodgers. Also, continue to compare him to Favre as well in his rookie year. I reason I feel this way is it should be a tool for us to use to help us determine what we have in Love. Yes there are differences in these comparisons such as the game has changed/evolved since Rodgers/Favre were rookies. The biggest difference is WR's, TE's and OL. I would think possibly strength of schedule could make a difference as well.

Some how the FO needs to make the decision as to whether or not Love is 'the man'.

Yes, the Packers have made some progress with the passing offense in the past couple of weeks, but I'm starting to get itchy for them to finish the job and win. Beating the Chargers, a team with a penchant for losing close games, would be a good place to start.

"The young receiving corps also needs to be sorted out." In the second half of the season, it would be nice if one of them emerged as a go-to guy--we need one. A recent podcast suggested Watson may be enduring a sophomore slump and his injury may have left him somewhat behind, but it seems that in order for him to thrive he needs a perfect play design and throw where he doesn't have to make any adjustments. So he'll have to get better if the Packers think he's the guy.

The upcoming draft needs are pretty well-known. Add CB to the mix with the departure of Douglas.

What to do with Joe Barry? That's easy! https://youtu.be/Qw5sAgBsGg8?feature=shared

Wouldn't it be cool if there's 3 or four go-to-guys. That way the great D minded coordinators can't stop them all.

If we're 21st in sacks why are we paying Gary such an ungodly amount? Is it based on pressure alone? But what is pressure worth without that sweet, sweet sackrelige?

How do you get a bunch of sacks when the other team just runs down your throat and doesn't need to pass? Even poor running teams have been getting in their groove against the Packers.

Kind of a misleading stat.

Stat fans.

Michigan against Penn State had no second half passing ability.

Totally dismissing that the second half plan was to run on every Offensive snap by design.

I never trust the stat fan to give me true info.

It's misleading but it's true. That's the problem with looking at isolated stats.

You could say, "WOW! The Packers really held the Steelers to very few completions and passing yards. The D played great!

Yep. To me nothing happens in a vacuum. Stats are great and all that but please it's for award purposes. In the big picture they don't replace decision making, or reflect all that happens live on the field.

All I want is to see positive improvement with Love and the receivers I don't care about the wins just some progress with the offense, unfortunately I don't think at this point as long as Barry is here the defensive is going to perform any better.

T-A-N-K or at least finish well below .500 to get a Top 10 pick in each round in the 2024 Draft. It will be tough to get into the Top 5 considering the Packers have a shot at winning 3 more games, which would put them at 6-11 for the season.

The Green Bay Packers, nor any professional franchise, will purposely lose games to get draft picks. Professionals play to win. Fans love this, but then again, fans aren't paid millions to play football. The NFL office would also heavily fine a team for trying to lose. If enough owners agreed, they also could revoke their franchise. Think that is worth it?

Consider this: a team tries to lose on purpose. They end up with the number one draft pick. While that pick could be a sure-fire winner, if you look at the history of top draft picks, they also could be stinkers. Baker Mayfield case in point. Number one pick, third team, doing ok this year but not with Cleveland who drafted him. The Browns had to go out and trade away a lot to get D. Watson who is hurt yet again.

The whole idea of tanking is very annoying. John Kuhn on his radio show pointed out teams that are having lousy years like the Packers often sit starters when the outcome is obvious and see what they have in back ups. That, he said, is a form of tanking with an eye toward improving the current team and not so to draft a 22 year old to play against veterans.

Thanks for your L-I-T-E-R-A-L interpretation of the comment. The point is the Packers are better off with a losing record than a .500 record because it will give them better draft picks. Drafting at #7 is a lot better than drafting at #15.

The Packers will not be in the playoffs this season. Even Gute has started to look at new players to stash on the squad for next season with the release of Innis Gaines, Justin Hollins, Kiondre Thomas, Patrick Taylor, and Austin Allen.

Regarding Baker Mayfield, the Packers would have never drafted Baker Mayfield because the Packers have a better GM than the Browns. The Browns were a disaster during those years even before drafting Mayfield, so the analogy is weak. Tony Mandarich, anyone?

I have maintained the Packers should draft a quarterback next April. Love will be in the final year of his contract. If the Packers don't think he's the long-term answer, they have a new quarterback to develop. Clifford is not the future.
If they think Love is the future, they can trade the new QB and retrieve some value.

I used to think it was unfair on Love to think he could be a great quarterback right away. But C.J. Stroud is showing that if you have talent you should be able to go right away. Love has had three years to collect a paycheck and learn. He might be no better than an average quarterback and the chance to get a really good quarterback via the draft should not be overlooked.

If Love throws 27 TDs and 17 INTs this season would you still draft a QB first? Not me.

Jc stroud may be a talented qb but it helps that houston has had very high draft picks for a long time and has assembled a pretty good team around him. Also they must have a much better HC than gb has

LOL. This from a guy who doesn't want the team to tank. Good luck getting a franchise QB outside the Top 10. Btw, the Packers already drafted a QB last April.

A really intriguing comment Harry.

If they take one early - then Love will be mentally cooked - he'll know that he's on the hot seat....... and personally, I don't think that he's equipped to deal with that.

If they take one late, then they are in the realm of draft and develop +++ : with most likely a bust.

I'll always advocate for BPA - and doubling down on deep draft positions.

After trading away Douglas, I think that Gute has put everyone on notice that it's sink or swim time. I personally agree with your comments re Stroud - college QB's are so well coached now that if they can't make it in the league in 2 years, then they probably will only ever have a low ceiling.

There is nothing wrong with the Packers that a complete overhaul of the front office and coaching staff with qualified and proven replacements would not correct. Ain't gonna happen.
