Packers trading OL Cole Van Lanen to Jaguars
The Wisconsin native was a sixth round pick for Green Bay in 2021.

The Packers are sending offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen to Jacksonville for a draft pick, per Rob.
The Packers are trading OL Cole Van Lanen, a Green Bay native, to the Jaguars, a source said. It’s for an undisclosed draft pick.

Van Lanen spent last season on the Packers practice squad before being elevated to the active roster on December 18th ahead of a week 15 game against the Ravens.
He saw action at tackle this past spring and during training camp but mostly played guard for Green Bay.
Van Lanen played in 45 games with 19 starts at left tackle in his four seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers.
No word yet on the value of the draft pick the Packers are receiving from Jacksonville, but my guess would be a conditional seventh.

The Jags won that trade. They well could have a starter for a 7th rounder. I guess you can't keep them all. At least they received something in return.

Right on: it was a guy they weren't going to keep, but had some value.
C. Jones moves one step closer to a roster spot.

I also view this as a good trade for the Jags, assuming the pick is conditional and it is for a 6th or a 7th. I thought Van Laanen played LG pretty decently and was not terrible elsewhere.
That doesn't mean it was not a good trade for the Packers. They were going to release him and I guess they thought someone would put in a waiver claim. Players capable of starting on the offensive line even if just in a pinch don't grow on trees. Jags get a guy GB spent two years on trying to develop.
It probably is a trade that benefits both teams.
Note: Caleb Jones needs to make the 53.

Van Lanen was not going to make the 53-man roster and would have been cut next week. Packers still have a deep offensive line and Rasheed Walker and Caleb Jones may end up on the practice squad. Also, a chance to add a veteran next week after the huge league wide cuts.

They must really like the other Linemen. And/Or figured out who they are planning to cut. In any case it gives him a chance to catch on with another team and for the Packers to get another late round pick.

He got traded, not waived.

Did the Jags have an injury? They must need bodies for the last PS game or they wouldn't have traded and just waited till the cutdowns.

Personally, I've never seen him as an NFL-level player. Maybe he can be a backup for the Jags.

He was better than I expected, which means I think he’s a swing type. I suppose we probably chose Hanson/Tom/Nijman over Nijman/Tom/CVL as primarily back ups. They do love Hanson. One day I hope to see why.

Al, can we get your opinion on how Packers OL doing the job through TC and what would you prefer as starting 5. Of course, if David and Elgton is not available. Thanks.

I don't want to seem to be badgering, but if it's true that Dannie Davis was cut, it's a tough day for former University of Wisconsin players.
