Packers Vs. Cowboys: First Impressions

My initial thoughts on the Packers - Cowboys game without the benefit of a re-watch.

--

The Packers have been one of the best third-down defenses this season, but you wouldn't be able to tell by watching this game so far today.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has been less than impressive in 2017, and that's seemingly becoming a weekly saying.

No Kentrell Brice means Morgan Burnett has to swap back to his natural safety spot and Josh Jones comes to inside linebacker. Burnett's the reason the Packers are able to be so versatile there.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that Davante Adams is playing in this game.

Dak Prescott's face up-close while he's running down the field makes me as uncomfortable as this third-down defense.

Rod Marinelli is sending an extra rusher against Aaron Rodgers today, and it's working. Offensive line has given up three sacks so far in the first half.

Worth noting that the Packers are 5-1 in games where Mason Crosby has missed an extra point. Since 2007, of course.

Just for the record, Quinten Rollins made a first-down saving tackle on the Cowboys' first possession of the second half and it was his biggest play all season.

I think Aaron Jones is RB1.

The Packers are completely flipping the T.O.P in this second half, and Aaron Jones is a huge part of that.

That's five receiving touchdowns in the last three games for Jordy Nelson, as the red zone maestro continues to do his thing.

Game-changer. That was the second pick-six of Damarious Randall's young career, and it's safe to say nobody on the Packers roster needed it more.

Field goal to tie the game is suddenly out of the equation; Packers can win the game here.

Is your heart thumping out of your chest? Mine certainly is.

What concussion? Davante Adams has two touchdowns today and the game-winner for the Packers.

Aaron Jones just might be the best Packers RB on the roster...Even with a healthy Monty.

Aaron Rodgers is absolutely amazing.

Can't wait to hear Shannon Sharpe give Skip Bayless the BLUES tomorrow.

Nobody can possibly be as clueless as what he says leads someone to believe. It has to be an act that plays into the "at least they're talking about me" thing.

That's why I try to avoid talking about him, or even paying any attention to him.

And I just talked about him.

Back to not paying attention to him....

Moron SB predicted GB 35 Boys 27. Skippy went so far as to say his open dislike for Rodgers would motivate Aaron to have a big game against "his" team, especially without MLB Sean Lee. What a joke.

Shannon Sharpe predicted the same score but merely said Dallas secondary would not be able to stop Aaron and Green Bay receiving corps. He also liked the new kid who replaced Montgomery and said he was a major waiver wire pick-up in fantasy league.

Yep. Awesome win. SO. MUCH. FUN.

But NP - How about our defense.... Look man, I want them to be good. I just know they're not. This is how this team will have to win it all. Not much margin for error.

The Packers just beat the only defense in the league that might be struggling more than they are, but for different reasons. Packers lack talent due to injury. Dallas lacks talent due to management.

No. The Packers lack talent too. Are you watching SNF? Look at the ferocity, speed and power of both of the defenses playing. Totally different level.

I'm not saying they're on par with KC or Houston.

Yes, I think at the VERY best, when healthy, GB could be an average defense. Unfortunately, in the real NFL world, no team is fully healthy often. As it is, we are bad.

And yes, I do think Dallas' D could be substantially improved by the end of the year. They've got young pieces in the secondary that have a lot of talent. We've got King (who is a nice prospect) HHCD (who has underachieved this year), House (who is mediocre) and a 30 year old Morgan Burnett. Hawkins is a wild card. Randall and Rollins, don't remind me....

Man you know damn well Burnett isn’t 30 and King isn’t any more of a project then Jourdan Lewis or Awuzie are. Hell Heath is there version of Brice Butler a hard hitter that isn’t too reliable in coverage and Scandrick is just a guy kind of like Rollins. Randall does have 2 pick sixes to his credit and can make a play here and there. So with this said Packers defense has just as much chance to vastly different as the Cowboys if not better.

I disagree - the Packers DO have talent on defense.
The coaching of the defense is AWFUL, and nobody knows what they are doing from play to play, particularly in zone coverage.
This isn't about talent - it's about management.

Someone is going to have to explain to me when they switched the rule on the first down mark to the same as the goal line--where simply breaking the plane ends the play successfully.

I was under the impression that the ball carrier can give up the yardage to gain a first down and Zeke Elliot very clearly pulled that ball back to around the 19.5 before he was ruled down.

But who cares? Rodgers....

I wouldn't put it past the refs to have blown the rule on that one. I thought the only reason goal line is different is because the play is over once the ball crosses.

I saw it as Rodgers being very focused, but recognized the same thing flack. Aaron was edgy, recognizing he had lapses in his O-line, and some calls not going his way. He even called out Bennett when he continued to run his route off of the field and was involved in some scrape with a Cowboy. His competitive moxie was apparent, and was a huge difference in this game.

It was the correct call. it's considered forward progress as long as the ball pullback wasn't a result of his running again to try to get away.

Thanks for clearing that up, Al.

So trying to gain more yards = surrendering forward progress but trying to secure the ball does not. I can't say that makes any sense to apply the rules that way, IMO. But then again, neither does the tuck rule. Or the rules that define what is or is not a catch. All of those rules made sense to the competition committee, I guess. And those guys know one heck of a lot more about it than me.

Like I said, I loved watching things play out like they did. So I'm glad the Cowboys got the call.

The announcers explained on a previous play, you get forward progress at the point where you get touched and then pushed back. He stuck the ball out there but I was looking for where did he get touched. Looked they gave Zeke an extra half yard which was the difference. What ticked me off is that you get the big stop, then the big let down and by inches at that. C boys, at the crucial moments they always seem to get the calls.

My problem with the review was that the camera did NOT appear to be directly overhead, but positioned *slightly* behind the pile up. From that angle you cannot see where the ball really is. This is just geometry. Angles matter.

Yeah, I was ready to throw something at the t.v. with that call. What the heck? I said to my wife that Jerry must be paying those "home town" refs a lot of coin. Then, after the half, it seemed like someone must have "gotten a call" because IMHO the refs calls were VASTLY more fair in the second half!! What a game. I must be getting jaded in my old age because I just KNEW Rodgers would win that one with less than a minute to play! How great that Adams got to win this one for the team after that brutal hit last game. Loved that.

This game is just another reason why I always include A. Rodgers multiple times in my 5 reasons why the Packers will win their game.

I think that Aaron Jones should be RB1, he was huge in this game.
Once again our defense is unable to get off the field in the 4th quarter. This defense needs to make stops against the good offensive teams. Where was Josh Jones in this game?
Hope Kevin King injury is not serious.
Officiating was ridiculous again today. The officials virtually gave the Cowgirls their first TD by calling a penalty on Martinez that never happened.
Don't know how many injuries this team can continue to deal with. But for now and for this game, no worries thanks again to Aaron Rodgers. Thanks, Since '61

Just curious what Nick Perry was thinking on that last play with all the laterals when he recovered the fumble but just stood there and let the ball be knocked out of his hands (okay, hand). AR, What hasn't been said?

Bennett, 2 Great catch's when we needed them. If I'm wrong, I admit it. Wish he were a little quicker, but he's a force. Glad we have him.

Jones - WOW I don't care when Montgomery comes back, Jones is our Starting Running Back. For a While, I thought AG was back. Great Game!!

Adams, Tremendous Improvement!!

Randell & Rollins - Garbage!! My wife could have caught that interception. He doesn't get a reprieve for that one. I'm glad he's done something as a Packer.

Crosby Somebody hire a Limo. I'LL PAY FOR IT. Put Crosby in it & point it towards MINN. He would have been out of GB in 2007 if I were in charge. He Never Was, He isn't Now, & He Never Will Be a Clutch Kicker. They should present him with a medal for hitting more Goal Posts than any other Kicker. And there was NOTHING Wrong with either of those Holds.

Question: I'd have to see the play again, which I can't. Does anyone think we let Dak Prescott score at the end of the game to get the ball back? It almost looked that way to me.

Oppy you think you know everthing. "Arguably one of the top 3 kickers in the NFL"

Unless I'm reading the wrong stats, He is currently Ranked 21st of all Active Kickers, & 42ond on the All Time List. Hardly something to Brag about.

2012 his FG% was 63%. His 1st 5 yrs were in the 70's% & he's had 5 yr's in the 80's%, for a Career Average of just over 80%. Ryan Longwell is 24th All Time.

No question he can kick a long way. He'll make 60 yarders when were ahead 20 pt's. When you need him you can't take him to the bank. He's had some good games. He's had many more bad ones to suit me.

I'll admit my memory isn't what it use to be. I know he missed a FG in the 2007 NFC Championship Game that could have won it, & I believe he missed a Crucial one against the Kurt Warner game that would have won it for us. I could be wrong on this one? He's missed too many to suit me.

The snap was bad on the second botched PAT. Vogel struggled to get it placed. On JSOnline they're speculating that the LS might no longer be with the team by tomorrow.

I don't disagree in that it looked like the placement got there. I just don't know if it screwed up the timing of the kick. Haven't seen a replay to judge whether Crosby had to change his approach to the ball.

Aside from that abysmal year I can't really remember Crosby letting us down. When the game is on the line he's pretty reliable. I could be wrong but missed FG's to lose a game are pretty memorable. He's not the best ever but I feel comfortable with him kicking the ball.

Flow49, I'm not saying he's the worst kicker to put on a uniform, just far from one of the Best. He may have had a number of game winning FG's, I really don't know. You don't get that many of those. He may have made more of those than he missed. You have to take into consideration the FG's during the games that were missed, that would have led to victory's I'm sorry, He hasn't won me over in 11 years. I don't have a lot of confidence in him. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong. Maybe this year? I hope he does. We are going to need him.

One has to also look at the range of the misses and percentage of long range kicks attempted.

Many of crosby's misses are 50+.

Not sure I can dislike your BS comment about Crosby enough, LVT. As of the NFC Divisional Round in Dallas, he had a NFL-record 23 consecutive postseason FG makes. Literally the best there has ever been at making kicks when they count the most.

JDK52, I'm well aware of his Playoff FG'S. He had a Great Game against Dallas last year. I remember the one's that hurt. I'll never forget his missed FG in the 2007 NFC Championship. Someone will have to help me with the Playoff Game in 2008 - 2009 against Kurt Warner, that we lost 51 to 45 in OT. I believe he missed a FG that could have won that game in Regulation 48-45. I know he made 1 20 yarder. I think he's a Good, not Great Kicker, & I don't think he's Clutch as Hell. I've been watching GB Packer Football for at least 60 years. He's hit more Goal Posts than any other Kicker I've seen. When I have Money down, there's a reason I'm not Confident in Mason Crosby. I agree he can kick a ball a long way, & I know he's made a number of 50+ yard FG's, but to be a Great FG Kicker, you should make 50 yarder's. He's missed a lot more than he has made.

Crosby will be fine! He was clutch last year in Dallas.....
Dix needs to improve big time......TT better sign Adams now before he costs 12-15 million a year at least!
Spend that extra cap money so we don't lose our clear number two receiver and future number one. I just can't put my finger on what consistently hurts this defense.....they look great at times and other times putrid and then there is the times they lose by inches (4 and1) today...drop a pick or miss a sack and it turns into a thirty yard gain.....I just don't know???
Is this just defense in the NFL today against talented offensive teams?
Talk to me guys!

Agreed. We got 8 pressures on Prescott's 40 drop backs per PFF. That isn't good enough to win consistently.

The good news is that Perry is probably 60% to 70% of normal with a club. Daniels might not have been 100%. I am not sure what happened with Brooks - I thought he got hurt. I thought I saw a lot of Perry/CM3, and they must have gotten tired given Dallas' time of possession advantage (35:06 minutes to 24:54 minutes).

Lost of Thomas really showed up by the third quarter. Then Packers lost Burnett, and the Cowboys went to town on the short pass. Whitten? is old and slow, but nobody plays the soft spots in zone coverage better. No choice, Packers ran out of bodies. By the way, did you notice Jones playing SS over Brice when Burnett went down. Some of that was exhaustion, cramps took a lot of the secondary out by the end of the third. I wasn't sure who they would have left if this game went into overtime.

This defense is almost as bad as the defense from the Starr teams in the 80s. Although, it's not as bad as the 2011 defense.

People get after that 2011 defense which was bottom-of-the-barrell in yards allowed, but it was pretty much middle-of-the-pack in points allowed.

Game flow means a lot. When your offense is playing lights out and putting opponents into "must score 35 points to win" mode early in games, you're going to surrender a lot of yards. That Packer team was playing prevent for half of the season.

I'm not saying they were good. I'm saying that if the offense wasn't scoring 35 ppg like they were, it would have changed the game flow dramatically and we have no idea what that defense would've looked like.

Dallas is going to score a lot of points--efficient, balanced, offense--this year and against some pretty good defenses. Especially in their house.

Stealing a win on the road against a team everyone seemed to have pegged as a SB contender before the season started is pretty big, no matter how it unfolds. This win makes it improbable that the Packers will have to go back there in January.

Just...win...baby.

Also just to touch on HHCD...he looks slow and disinterested back there. Potentially out of shape. We really really need a centerfielder at frer safety who can get over the top and make a play on the ball and right now he looks flatout incapable. So i will say this just as some food for thought. Would we get more out of Randall taking snaps at free safety on obvious passing downs? I dislike Randall even with the pick 6 today his penalty after was a disgrace. But SOMEBODY has to start making plays on the ball. Also, Kentrell Brice should go by "marlboro red" because hes a cowboy killer.

It doesn't help that HHCD is being forced to help out all across the secondary. When you don't have a CB who can work on an island at least some of the time, the FS has a lot more ground to cover and is going to look late on a lot of stuff.

I cant accent this point enough. Although likely an exaggeration, it feels like we are constantly in blitz mode, and one deep. Two deep splits the field and, can allow for better coverage over the middle for those intermediate passes. McCarthy has always placed an emphasis on turnovers, and I feel the Packers D is constantly playing in a Make or break mode attempting to create these opportunities.

A healthy Daniels and Perry are SOOOO important to this D, though.

Fun game watching Packers win. Refs lost it, let the crowd get to them. Chippy game almost became nasty. Capers got out schemed early first half. Cowboys set up Dak Prescott to run first in the gaps made by man coverage and 1 high. Cowboys one of only two teams in the league who can get away with that. Packers shifted to zone late 2 quarter and pretty much shut down Dallas till middle of the fourth. Give the Cowboys credit, they wore the Packers DL down. Secondary play was night and day, especially in the second half. O-line was effective when it counted. Aaron Rodgers once again showed why he is the best player at the most important position in the NFL. Jerry Jones, I drink your tears, HA HA HA HA. I go to bed a happy camper tonight. GO PACK!

Can someone explain what exactly happened on the play at the 2 yd line when Rodgers got hit with the crown of that cowboys helmet. They said it was a sack I believe. So was the play blown dead and than he got hit? I have a buddy that said he should've been considered a runner so that shouldn't have been a penalty. And when they marked off the penalty it wasn't from the original line of scrimmage? It was from where rodgers was when he got hit.

Rodgers was ruled sacked by the back judge before he threw the ball. It is a dead ball foul, and is a 15 yard from the point of contact.

I thought that was clearly a foul. Late hit, leading with the helmet...went a little high for good measure.

Any smart defender knows you can't do that to a QB. It's going to get called virtually every time. Even if people don't agree with the call, it's karma for the Martinez call in the endzone.

LIke everybody I loved the final 75 seconds and worried through the first 58:45. I am not so quick to feel too bad about the defense just yet! I am sure everybody noticed a lot of base defense this game not as much nitro as I anticipated. I think this led to a dichotomous 2 halves with the first lots of passing, the second lot of running!

I was thrilled with the 2nd effective game from Maryty B and if we ever get 69 back, look for him to make hay! I loved Aaron Jones in the preseason and he was awesome today but I want to see him against a better front than Dallas, but he is eerily similar to 88 and we may find them interchangeable as the season progresses.
Like everybody I thought the officiating was atrocious beginning with that call on Martinez I'm the endzone! I was impressed with Lane Taylor again and GB got a severe home team discount from him, reminds me of when Mike Flannigan moved out from center to play LT when Chad Clifton was hurt and did so well or two years ago when Tretter filled in for 69.
Cobb was so effective when he was on the filed he got a lot of attention but needing 2 TE's got him a lot of pine time !
Blake Martinez is proving a lot of the naysayers wrong and last of all, I hope GB blows the Vikings out O don't know of my heart is healthy enough to be a Packer fan this early in the season!

Heck of a football game. Go Pack Go.
My simple thoughts... Matinez is the man. Adams got right back on the horse and rode that mother....
Randle was lucky with the interception and I was glad he knew which direction to run in. A rocket scientist he aint.
Not sure of King. Would like to know if concussions were an issue for him in college. Two big ones now and its only game six.
Hope Gordy is ok.
Nice to see our third string running back got to play a little before going back on the bench next week. After all he was drafted behind Williams and Monty will be back.

Good luck tonight. Growing up I used to say that I rooted for two teams: the Packers and whomever was playing the Vikings (unless they were playing the Bears; then I hoped for a tie with a lot of injuries). But that was when I was young and dumb and didn't understand that rooting for injuries was not cool. But then your guy AP and his magic tree branch came along and I started to have second thoughts. The defense looks like the same defense we've had for years and Capers is the main constant. He's designed different defenses over the years, none of which work. He coaches scared. We're lucky that throw to Beasly over the middle on the second last play was a little off or we'd be talking about that tonight. He was wide open heading for TD. We've got more speed and better athletes now then we've had for a while so I'm giving TT a pass. But not Capers. His defenses just can't stop good teams. Atlanta and Dallas ate us up. We'll see one or both again. Anyone feel like we'll stop them in the playoffs. The bald yawning fool needs to go.

Eh I’m not so sure the defense shut Zeke down until the late in the 3rd when key players started dropping out and outside of a 49 yard completion Dak had 202 on 35 attempts hardly getting “ate” and the defense only gave up 10 points the rest of the way despite being on the field for 7 minutes at a time while chipping in 6 of their own. Dak avoided about 3 sacks with his athleticism these are the things you have to take into account this team could look very different when guys get healthy.

Impressions:
1.) Aaron Jones was a steal in the 5th round, and I don't care what Monty can do, Jones should be the starting running back. Move Ty back to receiver, or make him a 3rd down back.

2.) Devonte Adams is a WARRIOR that has a desire to play through injury. The catch he made on the TD was one of the most difficult, twisting, athletic catches I've ever seen. I'm buying his jersey, and I don't own one player jersey. (Note - I do have ONE player jersey - a Steeler jersey some kid left in my back yard that I hit with the mower. Troy Polamolu) Caveat on Adams - this is a contract year, so clearly he's motivated to make his 50-75 million, and he'll probably get it.

3.) Aaron Rodgers is going to be, and should be, the highest paid QB in the game. Another unbelievable performance in Dallas. What more needs to be said, he's a hall of famer, and quite possibly the best Packer QB ever. Brett Favre was an athletic beast of a player, but Aaron Rodgers is truly mythical. His number will be in the ring of honor some day.

4.) Packers defense is truly awful and has a long, long way to go to be championship caliber. I honestly believe they have the talent, but the coaching is absolutely horrific, some of the worst in the league. A shakeup of the coaching staff needs to be done after the season.

If this team had just a 10-15 range defense, this would be/will be, a Super Bowl year.

"Aaron Jones was a steal in the 5th round, and I don't care what Monty can do, Jones should be the starting running back."

I think Jones gives them very useful depth at RB, but we have to remember that this was Dallas's pretty lousy defense they were playing against without their top run stopper in Sean Lee. I don't know how much difference Lee would've made yesterday, but I can't help but think a healthy Monty would have been just as effective against that sorry group. Jones looked a lot like Monty against Chicago last fall, but I think he'll take a back seat until he's more integrated into the passing game. We'll see how #33 does against a Vikings defense that has the personnel and desire to try to gobsmack the Packers next week. At least for now, the Packers might have a 1A and 1B at RB.

"Brett Favre was an athletic beast of a player, but Aaron Rodgers is truly mythical."

I can't help but wonder what Favre--who was mostly arm talent, guts and passion (that's an oversimplification)--would have been if he'd had ARod's intellect, accuracy, and feel.

"If this team had just a 10-15 range defense, this would be/will be, a Super Bowl year."

I agree - we complain when guys can't rush for any yards, against any teams defense, so I don't care who we were playing, the guy still had 125 yards against a pro caliber defense. I'm not going to nit-pick about that performance in any way. Give the guy some credit for once for God's sake. He was awesome and deserves to be the starter.

I have thought all along that D. Mays has the same type of RB talent as A. Jones does with a lot bigger, more punishing body type to wear down defenses.
Like to see him get some touches and maybe have a 3 headed RB situation.
