Packers Vs. Giants - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm
Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.
By JerseyAl
After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I either focus on a theme, more nuanced observations, or just things I didn't notice watching live. These can be but are less likely to be "highlight" plays. I present these to you with a short explanation why I picked them and then let you readers discuss the plays.
(all three plays today are from the Packers' first defensive series)
Micah Parsons - You heard it almost as soon as the trade was announced, "Parsons isn't any good as a run defender." Of course, it was mostly coming from pissed off Cowboys fans, angry that their star player was gone. Many times your first instinct when that happens is to talk down the player in a feeble attempt to downplay the loss and assuage your feelings. They certainly couldn't say he was a bad pass rusher without sounding like total idiots, so run defense it was. They also tried to say he was a locker room problem, but his teammates all quickly disputed that bullshit. Having watched Parsons for 10 games now, I don't need Jeff Hafley to tell me how impactful he is in all phases, although Hafley has expressed that numerous times. Here's the very first play of the game. Parsons stands his ground against the tackle(338lbs) and tight end(264 lbs) double team, stands up the tackle with one arm and sheds him to make the tackle. Micah Pasons weighs 250 lbs. He fought off 602 lbs between the two men and didn't give up an inch of ground. THAT, is incredible run defense.
Carrington Valentine - Yes, of course, we know that Valentine could have (should have) had an interception on this play. But what I want to point out is how Valentine gets the opportunity. We've seen this before from him. His very first career interception was in the end zone against Geno Smith where he dropped off the man he was covering to contest the pass being thrown to another receiver. The key is, as Jeff Hafley likes to say, "eyes on the quarterback." Look closely and you can see Valentine, who is responsible for the tight end in the flat, watching Winston. As soon as he sees him throwing the pass, Valentine redirects towards the other receiver and makes a play on the ball. He should of had his third career INT, but regardless, this is just smart aggressive cornerback play from CV.
Quay Walker - For a player that wears the green dot and is responsible for making sure all his teammates know the call and their assignment, Walker sometimes seems to get lost with his own assignment. I suspect he may be overthinking things at times and ends up in "indecision land" where overthinking results in him not really doing anything or executing his own assignment. This is just a theory, of course, but I have definitely seen him doing a lot of watching in pass defense as passes are completed in his area. Here, he has Cooper right next to him, who has the TE covered. The receiver circles into the zone behind Walker but instead of Walker dropping into the passing lane, he moves towards Cooper and the tight end. That opens up a huge hole for an easy 20 yard completion on second and 10. I obviously don't know what the exact call was, but I do know there was no reason for Walker to be worried about the tight end with Cooper right there.

I don't know what was supposed to have happened, but it sure looked like Quay could have just dropped back and stuck a hand up. I'm not going to call him out because he's been doing well this season, but it makes me want to go back and look at allot of other passes that seem to get completed right in that area. If it was Quay's responsibility, I didn't see anyone calling him out for it like they should.
He looked like I did in junior varsity when the coach told me to line up at linebacker in the 52 D. I'd never practiced it or knew he was thinking about putting me there as the only position I've ever played let alone practiced was on the inside line on O & D. LOL. I think I might have helped tackle the end crossing after the catch when I was done scratching my head. By the way, I was put firmly back in my position on the line after that and never played or even practiced at LB again.

Quay didn’t have a good game on Sunday. For whatever reason, whether tackling or covering he was below par. McDuffie made tackles but also seemed slow to the ball even for him and conceded a lot of ground. Generally our Mike play was weak. I’m not sure if it was uncertainty about the new HC or QB or just an off day.

Tackling was definitely an issue, across the whole team.

True, Al, we all watched Quay reach for his moment and try to make an honest stand, but he wound up wounded and not even dead, Sunday in Indecisionland.

I have no problem with Quays toughness. But he looks weak against the pass. Against the Giants, the intermediate routes over the middle were open all day. Now, while our safeties appeared to be playing in a different time zone (the main problem), you have to think some balls would be deflected in that area? I wonder if GB should be looking at a hybrid/large safety to play the MLB on obvious passing downs? It might also give Quay a needed breather...?

It'd be nice to have Colin Oliver back.

There weren’t too many plays that made me go hmmm. The drops made me say something stronger, but, if I’m honest there was already a voice saying “but he got there in position” on the defensive ones. Valentine is a breath of fresh air.
The one play that gives me pause for thought was a good one. Savion Williams running a route and making a contested catch for 30+ yards. It was not the fact that he caught it, or that it was contested, but that he tracked it, turned and walked off the defender.
If he can run that route that well and naturally protect the catch zone, why on earth have we not seen him run that type of route or even at that depth before now? Especially as Watson has only just back and he’s the only other bigger guy on the roster. LaFleur just being afraid of a non-first day rookie? If not I really don’t know what we have been thinking.
It’s really frustrating when it takes absolute removal of choice by numbers of injuries to get young players a chance even when they appear to be capable of offering exactly what we were lacking till recently. Williams needs more chances to run those type of routes. He’s clearly able to offer something others can’t physically combined with the reality that over the shoulder is not Watson’s forte either.

I think what we saw there was a broken play and a scramble with Love directing him deep. It wasn’t a called play. But great to see the communication and connection and to grab the ball.

Yep. It was an ad lib, "go deep" play when pass protection was the best it was all day. The protection was greatly aided by Brooks' 5 sec block on the late blitzing LB in front of Love as he scanned the field seeing coverage then saw Williams as the best option for the deep pass. Brooks made the play possible, then the QB and WR made plays.
Williams made the great catch...but that throw was a thing of beauty. You give Love time and he will zip the ball like it is laser sighted.
I am certain the Giants D now knows "Love Hurts".

The salient point though is not how good the pass was, or the blocking was but how Williams ran the route and used his body to set up the catch. He’s clearly able to do it. If it was an ad lib it only accentuates the question of why hasn’t he been being used to do that deliberately?

And another salient point is how good the pass blocking was on the play (finally!). Love had 5-6 seconds in a clean pocket. If the OL and RBs like Brooks can do that routinely, Williams may get more deep chances.
Love has been under pressure often and those deep shots are moot then.

I think Quay Walker is a good player for us. He takes a lot of snaps and makes a lot of tackles. Pass defense might never be his forte, but you have to take the bad with the good to some extent. If you can put 11 defenders on the field that are all better than Quay Walker, then you have a very, very good defense on the field.
We didn't exercise his 5th year option, so he'll be a FA. The top FA ILBs last year all signed for $10M/year on either a 1 year or 3 year deal. That would be a bunch, but maybe doable. However, IMO, he's not a top tier guy, he's more like a second tier guy, and then we could get him for about $20M for 3 years.
The beauty of this is that Cooper will be on his rookie deal for two more years, so we've got two pretty solid players lining up in the middle of the defense for two more years at least.
The entire defense, basically, is under contract for next year. Enagbare and Walker are the only FAs that I'm aware of. At least defensively, the window will still be open in 2026.

It also doesn't help him that the D line does not hold its ground consistently well.

I have been disappointed in Gary the last few games. He's not even beating single team. His motor is usually running hot but lately it seems he's on idle. Is he playing with an injury?
Wyatt has been barely switched on...and really hasn't been since he returned from injury. Is he still hurt or what. Too many snaps he wouldn't even move until well after the snap. A few times if he got blocked initially, he'd just stop and wait for the whistle. The guy who Hafley proclaimed a dominant player early in the year is not even outplaying Brooks or Wooden now.
The Packers must have self-outlawed "trench warfare" because they are not getting it done on both sides of the ball.

Or that E. Cooper has been disappointing. The way he flashed last year, I thought Cooper would be a pro bowl guy this year. He does lead the league in missed tackles.

His 5th-year option would have been 15 mill because they lump all LB (edge) together. I imagine he'll get more than 3 yrs/20 mill, though I would love it. I'd guess 3/27 or even a bit more.

Thank you for pointing out Quay Walker and his terrible pass coverage. He couldn’t cover my grandmother with an Amish quilt. I get tired of hearing the Packer media act like he is a Pro Bowler instead of a C- player. I also get tired of hearing how great he is because he makes soooo many tackles. You know who else made a lot of tackles? Blake Martinez and he’s out of football trading comic books or something . You’re not an All Pro because you make a ton of tackles 7 or 8 yards downfield.

I don't know if I am as knowledgeable as you are about Quay's value and production on the team. I am 100% certain the players and his DC know more than you about these things.
His teammates voted him Team Captain for all of 2025 and his DC raves about his production and leadership.
The LBs are playing soft zone in the middle now as Hafley still tries to get consistent pressure with 4. It does not play to Walker or Cooper's strengths for that matter to drop into zone.
Hafley is going to have to blitz either Walker or Cooper more and less 2 middle zone if the front 4 plays like they have recently.
This is the best LB tandem the Packers have had in a long time.

I'm not worried about Quay Walker.
His teammates Love him.
And if you ever compare his stats to
Nick Barnett. It 's foolish not to Love him.
153 games 72 av 20.5 sacks 732 solo 6FF.
54 games 19 av . 8.0 sacks 247 solo 3FF.
TT loved football players.
He drafted Micheal Hyde and
Looked what happened there.
Carpenter is a player.
And finally I Love Parsons game.
If anyone remembered Ted Hendricks
" The stork" . Don't be quick to judge.
Because if any of these 3 leave.
They'll still make it some place else.

Part of a GM's grade is having drafted a player who warrants a second contract-there has been a bit of over-zealousness by some in GB media and the FO to sign a big second contract.

I have lukewarm praise for Quay. He does have many tackles, but it seems he’s chasing many plays rather than disrupting them at the point of attack.
It also seems Cooper is in a bit of a sophomore slump—maybe I’m missing something?
It’s difficult to complain much when we shutdown most offenses, including the defending SB champs.
If our offense starts rolling—lookout!
As Leatherhead mentioned, if go 4&3 we’ll be in good shape.
Go Jersey Al…and…
Go Packers!!!

Al, you're showing why I've never thought #7 should have the green dot OR be the Mike. Not anymore against him I just don't think it's his strength. It looks to me like their receiver simply beat us, whether play design or what; we got several hats on him but only after a big gain. Seems like that's often been the case this season ...

I’ve said it a dozen
N times-
Quay walker is a superior athlete with marginal instincts at the MLB position.
Give him a singular task, like that of attacking the QB, he excels. If he has to diagnose a play, he’s nearly always either flat-footed or takes a misstep. His amazing athleticism covers
Ed up those warts and gets him back into plays many LBs would be out of. Unfortunately, he hasn’t shown much improvement in his recognition/reaction to play flow.
He leads the pa clear in tackles because use he’s a mlb.
