Packers Vs. Raiders - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things I didn't notice watching live.

Shoot it into the Sun - This has to be the worst play in the Packers' playbook. It's always a disaster because obviously, no one knows how to run it right. It's mass confusion that results in dangerous throws or throw-aways like this one. But wait, looking at it closer, it may not even be a middle screen, Yes Love is under pressure fairly quickly, but Dillon runs right into the one Raider player still hanging at the line of scrimmage. If this is a middle screen, it's just a mess. If it was intended to go left (looking at where Jenklns and Myers are running, that could be the case) why send Dillon into the middle of the line and make him navigate through it to get into a catching position behind Jenkins and Myers? I'm really not sure now what to make of this, but regardless, it's just horrible execution.

Never Prepared - I spliced two plays together here. The first is a fourth and inches in the second quarter and the second is a third and five in the third quarter. The common theme in these two plays is that the Packers are not ready when the ball is snapped. But wait, there's more. On the fourth and inches, the Packers are in Nickel with two DL!  On fourth and inches! To make matters worse, the Raiders had shown sneak on a 2nd and one earlier in the game, so this should be no surprise. Even worse, 30+ seconds ran off the clock before the Raiders ran this play. It's not like they rushed to the LOS and there was no time to sub (Barry's excuse last week for being in Nickel on the goal line). How do you leave this group in the game on fourth and inches? The play didn't matter because a re-spot of the ball from the previous play gave Las Vegas a first down anyway, but still...On the third and five play, the Packers are pointing, yelling, and moving to new spots when the ball is snapped. The DL aren't even in their stances and of course, the DBs are 8 yds off the LOS and retreating on a third and four. STOP THE INSANITY!

Goal Line Defense - Do the Packers even have a true goal line defense? Four DL in tight so there are no gaps for the offense to exploit? Although wait, there are three DL here, so Barry did increase the number by one from last week. That must be his concession to trying to stop the run on the goal line - play straight 3-4. And what a terrible effort from Eric WIlson here. He's into the hole untouched and then drops his head and gives himself up to the fullback. Keep your head up, meet the fullback head on and at worse, gum up the works.

I noticed several routes with 2 or 3 receivers converging into one tight area on catching routes too. Reading this and some other observations and it just endemic confusion. Chaos and not just among the inexperienced. That’s just failed coaching from position level up.

Let the defenders of this defensive coordinator speak. I’m truly interested in their justifications.

Bad bad coaching on both sides of the ball. Out of place missed tackles. Missed blocks. MLF has lost control. Fire BARRY.

Add the WRs disasters.

Watson was supposed to be WR leader, but in year 2 he runs a non curl on what MLf called a deep curl…resulting in defender deflecting it for an INT. Watson after game emitted he misread pass in 4th that could have resulted easy TD. He also admitted he didn’t fight on the last pass resulting in an INT. Always bad when your own CBs call you weak.

Doubs drops easy pass.
Musgrave drops easy pass and messed up repeatedly in 1st quarter resulting in MLF chewing him out.

I agree Doc, I'll give him a bit of a pass on the last play because it was under thrown as Love was scrambling, but he's 6' 4" fight for the catches.

This kind of confusion might be forgiven on the middle screen if this were the first or second game, especially with the Packers being such a young team. Inexperience, not enough prep time are lame excuses, but very early on, that would be minimally acceptable, as long as things got cleaned up and the team became more efficient. That it is happening five games in is not acceptable. This is on the coaches, IMO. But my disdain for most of the staff has been made very clear. On defense, you reap what you sow. Was anyone expecting Barry to suddenly become competent? Yet, that is what LaFleur decided to do. I'd been hoping for a final record of 9-8 or 8-9. What I was hoping for was continued development on offense, especially for Love, and a change in strategy on defense. Apparently, though, this coaching staff has no clue how to achieve these reasonable goals.

I feel sorry for Al.
The title of this weekly article should have been revised to say "3 plays that make you think our coaches have a clue!"
Only problem with that scenario is you'd be hard pressed to find enough content to complete the article.
Pretty sad state of affairs at 1265.
mlf needs to find a decent DII college to learn about football coaching basics.

Play 3: LOL,,obviously one of the "schematic" changes MLF promised after the Lions game. Looks like the gap to the right would have worked for the runner as well.

Play 2, the first one: Could be a communication breakdown with added confusion, or it could be Barry just being Barry again.

Maybe some of this gets cleaned up once Campbell comes back. We miss him.

Defenders knew it was a screen because Dillion does not sell it by being in blocking position for a 2 count.

Was 2022 really Rodgers' fault, or did he just make the "LaFleur Offense" seem better than it actually is?

Rodgers basically masked the deficiencies in LaFleur's playcalling ability, and hes now being found out with inexperienced QB and WR's at his disposal. Hs so called pre snap multi movement misdirection is just a shit version of what Shanahan does in SF, only they do it properly, everyone seems to know what we're trying to do, it doesn't fool anyone.

Yes, with a TE who blocks his ass off on every play. When they were shading a TE to Crosby's side they just gave a little bitty shove, put some body into it and then release. I sure do miss Lazard.

My big question is, why is Walker out there playing LT when we have Nijman, who last year, was the #1 run blocking tackle and was also a top-10 pass blocking tackle when healthy, according to ESPN. Not to mention he did it mostly at a position he hadn't practiced at since college.

Nijman's pass protection numbers were excellent on the left side; why are we playing a 7th-round pick over him when he has already shown he is a good, if not great, OT?

Because those rankings are not stats. Had Nijman been the #1 run blocking LT and the #8 pass blocking LT, teams including GB would be lining up to pay him $20M per year. Instead, no one signed him to an offer sheet and he signed his tender before the offer sheet period ended, indicating his understanding that no one wanted to give up a 2nd round pick for him much less pay him a lot of money. Garbage in, garbage out.

That isn't to say that Nijman should not replace Walker at LT. I think it is quite possible that Nijman would perform better than Walker. [No reason to mention Walker's 7th round pedigree when Nijman went altogether undrafted. It isn't at all persuasive.]

For the same reason Nijman was ignored in '21 in the NFCC against Tampa when Bakh got hurt. The coaching and player decisions by MLF do not make any sense.

We already knew how bad Berry's D play calling was/is. With AR gone, the HC offensive inadequacies are exposed/confirmed for all to see.

If you look back this is the same thing I outlined from the ATL game. The 3rd and 5 play was done well from a play call perspective. However the Mike backer should have opened to the 3 receiver side. If he does that he fills off the linemen’s ass and gets a TFL. Why he opened to the running back side with a weak side nickel is beyond me and exactly why the play succeeded.

With the goal line package, no they weren’t even packed inside tight. Instead they had three down linemen the nose in a 0 technique. Then they had a fricken 6 alignment with the ends. Then the outside linebackers out wide. When playing goal line defense you give up touchdowns anywhere but A gap or B gap. The running back literally almost ran in untouched and that’s with a blitzing linebacker to the plays side. Dumb alignment. It should be nose 0 tackles head up to outside shoulder with backers stacked behind them. Ends in a tight 7 and safety at about 4-5 yards back in the c gap alignment.

My last thing to get off my chest is the play calling offensively. The reason Love started the season decent is because MLF really honed in on getting him a Rhythm. Quick three steps and fast reads where the ball needed to be out right away. It got him in a rhythm better than these last two games. Right now Green Bay doesn’t have the horses up front to be doing straight 5 and 7 step drops. It needs to be PAP, Boots, RPOs, Roll outs, quick passing. The more they’ve gotten away from that the worse they’ve looked. The receivers aren’t far enough along to win match ups consistently before the pass rush bears down on Love.

I know I said last thing but one other thing. The schedule makers did a terrible job. A mini bye week the week before an actual bye week? 1 game in 24 days is pretty stupid and hard for a young team to gain momentum.

I don't understand the schedule comment. GB played 10-9 and will play again on 10-22, some 13 days later. Since they played on a Monday before their bye week, the interval with no football is one day fewer than normal.

Sick and tired of seeing 1-2 players running the wrong blocks, wrong routes, out of position, etc on so many plays. Did any of these players really pass any college course?

The play that gets me running ball pretty good, come to 3rd down and 3 and throw a 40 yard pass that is not going to be completed knowing the lack of accuracy of Love. I know will get creamed for this but maybe give Clifford a shot and if nothing might wake up Love! And not using Nijman, there must something he did to piss off somebody, because he is heads above Walker at LT!

Nijman is playing on the field goal block team these days. With the way Barry lets the opponent March uncontested up and down the field it probably makes sense to keep him on the block team. So far he’s saved the team 3 points.

I'd give Clifford a go simply because I think he'd be more fun to watch. From what I saw pre season, he reminded me a little of Favre insofar as he throws hard and fast, and has a belief that he can make any throw. He will get picked and we will lose games, but that's happening anyway, may as well have a bit of entertainment rather than limping to defeat

This entire game made me go hmmmmmm. It also made me go "WHAT THE F*** ARE WE DOING" I didn't have extraordinarily high hopes for this game, for multiple reasons. BUT, I was HOPING for a LITTLE fight here. They offered none (on offense, defense, anything really). I'm going to drop a date and I want you to try and guess what is significant about it. 12/12/21.

No, it's not that it's got a bunch of 1's and 2's, that is the last date that a Packers QB threw for 300 yards. We're talking almost 2 full years of sub-300 yard passing games. That's inexcusable considering almost all of that was with a HOF quarterback at the helm. I know losing Adams hurts, but it's been a year and a half now for Christ's sake, MLF NEEDS to figure SOMETHING out. I was simply hoping for a lot of yards and I would've been happy with FG's, but this team can't do anything right.

We played the Raiders, who had so many streaks going against them which they absolutely shattered. Hadn't had a multiple turnover game since last year. Only one turnover all season. Haven't beaten GB since '87. Have allowed 14 or more points 36 times since the start of 2021 (out of a total of 38 regular season games).

They broke every single one of those streaks. They harassed Love. They stuffed the run. They made critical plays when they needed to. I'm starting to think Jimmy G is MLF's kryptonite because he simply cannot figure out how to beat him. Even playing against the dumpster fire that is Oakland.

Just a pitiful performance all around and the offense is simply not clicking whatsoever. I was never expecting the Packers to be playoff contenders, but they've shown they can't even be competitive at times. They need to get it figured out yesterday or it is going to be a VERY long season.

With a bye week - there is time to make some changes

1. Fire Joe Barry. Enough is enough

2. Zach Tom to C, Nieman to LT and Walker to RT. Josh was damned good at LT, not so much at RT. I am guessing the reverse applies to Walker.

3. Demote Steno to OL coach. Butkus ain't cutting it. And Steno is not cutting it at OC.

4. If the bye were a bit later in the year, I might even consider dumping MLF, and letting Biasachi have the job on an interim basis.

The offense has been an issue all season. I am not sure if MLF is a better HC or OC (yes I know we have an OC but that is in name only) or neither but I know he cannot do both.

First option have him give up play calling and devote his time to coordinating all three aspects of the team. I do not know who is capable of taking over call playing duties. Second option is to demote MLF to OC and have Biasachi take over as HC. This will not happen as Gute would actually have to play hardball and we all know his record of keeping people in positions too long.

The best we can expect from this team is an 8-9 record and I am sticking with my 5 or 6 wins this season. Even if a miracle happened and we made the playoffs we would never beat the Eagles, 49ers, or even the Lions. So what they need to do now is make changes to see who on the coaching staff can do their job. After the season they need to fire most of the offensive and defensive coaches and Gute but we know MM will not fir Gute.

Play calling. IMO MLF is trying to protect Love, by being extra conservative in H1. But that likely causes Love to feel somewhat insecure - knowing coach doesn't trust hum. Then in H2, Packers are behind - and MLF starts calling g low percentage long passes to catch up. That also kills Love's confidence. It is not the system, but MLF seems totally unaware of how to develop or help Love. I guess he was spoiled by having AR12.

Al, I was hoping you would have picked as one of your 3, the touchdown pass by the Raiders from the 9 yard line with Nixon covering the slot receiver and standing on the goal line at the snap. The receiver runs a quick slant and catches the ball at the 3, Nixon makes contact at the 2 and it's a TD. I just don't get those kind of coverage calls.

Do you think that MLF's scheme needs more practice than the bargaining agreement and vet rest allows? I mean they had a mini bye and still hardly all practiced together at the same time.

They were planning on Jones starting till Saturday and MLF couldn't adjust? Like when Love had to take over for the Chiefs game on short notice and MLF didn't adjust the game plan for him with receivers being out too?

MLF is in his 5th season as an NFL HC He should be well prepared by now to deal with these situations. He is still being out prepared prior to the games and out coached during the games. Often by coaches with less experience than him.

Look at where the team was when Mike Holmgren and/or Mike McCarthy were in their 5th season as Packers HC.

I concede that MLF has a younger team than Holmgren or McCarthy had at this point. However MLF continues to make the same mistakes and poor decisions that he has made from his first season as an HC. Thanks, Since '61

The trouble is that we're giving him grace for the youngsters. Its his experienced guys (O-line) that're letting him down, and he can't or won't get it right. Like the youngsters can overcome this deficiency for him?

We saw last season, and his first 4 plays this season, that even a veteran QB can't overcome having poor O-line play.

..... and why weren't timouts called when there were scheme and personnel mismatches on the goal line. Isn't that the definition of when you'd use a timeout?

Al, you also forgot to add in when Preston Smith was left to cover Davante Adams lined up in the slot position....... that was a doozy and easy third down completion.

What is going on with the coaching dynamic when the DC can't call a timeout when he's obviously getting beaten?

I will note the injuries to the 2 ILB's, but this should be even more impetus to allowing Barry to call a timeout.
