Packers vs Rams: 5 Position Battles to Watch

Check out which Packers players need to perform well tonight against the Rams to try and solidify their spots on the final roster.

Tonight, the Green Bay Packers will play their fourth and final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. And while the game may not mean much to some in grand scheme of things, to the group of Packers fighting for roster spots, it means a whole lot.

So if you are a fan of the Packers and think you wouldn’t mind missing this game, you would be wrong. You would also miss out on some important football, that will certainly help determine who does and doesn’t make the final 53-man roster, which will be decided by Sept. 2.

When it comes to the Packers, the 90-man roster has generally been pretty deep and this year is no different. With key battles to be decided at running back, wide receiver, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker and backup quarterback, here is a quick breakdown of what to watch for tonight in the swan song of the preseason.

Running back --

The Packers running back competition has become very interesting. Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams both appear to be locks, but behind them, it’s still wide open. Both Aaron Jones and Davante Mays are looking to cement roster spots on the team.

Both backs have gotten limited opportunities thus far in the preseason. Jones has 11 carries for 57 yards and Mays has 10 for 25 but tonight, I expect both to get the ball much more. Williams may start the game, but Green Bay needs to find out if both Jones and Mays are worth keeping. In my opinion they are, but if they want convince the front office, a good night is needed by both.

Wide receiver --

This position is really deep, but injuries and the solid play of Trevor Davis and Jeff Janis have tampered the competition a little. The big question is, just how many receivers will the Packers keep?

The team does have a little added flexibility, thanks to Geronimo Allison missing the first week due to suspension. It may allow them to keep a wide out like DeAngelo Yancey or Michael Clark for a week, then sneak them onto the practice squad.

From this perspective, Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Davis and Janis have all done enough to make the team. Allison too, he just won’t be on the active roster until Week 2. That leaves maybe 1-2 spots left. I think they should go to Clark and McCaffrey, but Yancey might have something to say about that and if he does, tonight is the time to shine.

Front 7 --

After the release of Letroy Guion, another spot figured to open up on the defensive line. Mike Daniels, Dean Lowry, Kenny Clark and Ricky Jean-Francois are all going to make it, but the two guys on the bubble are Brian Price and Christian Ringo.

Both players have impressed this preseason with their ability to hold up against the run and get after the quarterback. With the injury to Lowry, the Packers should strongly consider keeping six, including both Ringo and Price. Yet, those two players can make the decision easier, with another strong performance to backup what they have already put on tape.

Reggie Gilbert is another Packer that needs a big night vs the Rams,

Reggie Gilbert is another Packer that needs a big night vs the Rams,

Another player in the front seven who needs a big night is Reggie Gilbert. The former rookie free agent has two sacks already this preseason, but with the signing of Ahmad Brooks, his future is very much in question. Yet, if he can impress the coaching staff again, Green Bay might just find room on the final roster for the former Arizona product.

Offensive line --

At this point, the depth on the offensive line might be the worst on the team. So tonight will be important for both Kyle Murphy and Jason Spriggs. Murphy played well against Denver and might have a chance to supplant Spriggs as the swing tackle. In fact, he might be the new J.C. Tretter, as he could be the backup at right tackle, right guard and left tackle.

Part of that will depend on how both tackles play tonight. If Spriggs struggles and Murphy continues to come on, it’s possible we could see a shift there, although the ideal scenario would be for Spriggs to wake up and start playing better.

However, if he does have another bad night, how could the Packers have the confidence to put him on that edge as Aaron Rodgers’ blind side protector? Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that, cause at this point, it seems like that would be a complete disaster.

Quarterback --

Last but not least, the quarterbacks. You might be asking what is going to be interesting about that, particularly since Rodgers probably won’t play and Brett Hundley, might not play for very long.

Yet, the battle for the third quarterback has been fascinating all summer and both Taysom Hill and Joe Callahan should see plenty of reps to help decide it tonight. Hill has recently moved ahead of Callahan in terms of getting snaps at practice and if he plays well tonight, he could move past him for good.

Hill has completed 62.5 percent of his passes in the preseason, while Callahan is connecting on just 57.9. Hill also has a touchdown pass, a yards per attempt average of 7.4 and is second on the team in rushing yards with 52, to go along with a rushing touchdown.

Hill, on the other hand, is averaging just 5.4 yards per pass attempt and also has thrown zero touchdowns. He hasn’t thrown any interceptions, but has a passer rating of 72, compared to Hill’s, which leads the Packers at 105.

At the end of the day, there is a chance that neither could be on the final roster, but whoever the third quarterback ends up being, you can be sure Green Bay will try to retain him, either on the roster or via the practice squad.

These are the position battles that I will be mostly watching tonight.

RB -
I believe that Montgomery, Williams and Jones are on the 53 right now. The one in question for me is Mays. He hasn't had many opportunities to show what he can do mostly do to poor OL play. But with a good showing he will likely cement a spot on the 53.
I think they keep 4 RB's this year.

WR -
This battle is still going and the Packers will be cutting a few players that I bet they wish they didn't have to. This much we know. Nelson, Adams and Cobb are locks. Allison has the week 1 suspension so that might give an extra WR a spot on the 53. I would say Janis and Davis are on the 53. So that leaves 2 spots for Yancey, Dupre, McCaffrey and Clark. Thompson rarely cuts draft picks 5th round or higher. But that doesn't mean that Yancey is a lock. Dupre was flashing early then got hurt. They might feel they can sneak him on the PS since not showing much in games. McCaffrey is a guy that is reliable and dependable. Never have to worry about him dropping anything. Clark is so intriguing with his size. And has shown big time ability in practices.
This battle should be a good one tonight. Anyone with a big game could earn themselves a spot on the 53.

CB -
The locks to me are House, King, Randall, Rollins. Hawkins is a near lock. The final spot should come down to Gunter, Pipkins and Brown.

I don't see TT releasing both of his WR draft picks. I think that the Packers might keep 7 WRs; Jordy, Cobb, Adams, Allison (post-suspension), T. Davis, Janis, and Yancey. McCaffery and Clark could make it to the PS. Unless Dupre shines big time in tonight's game he could be gone. As for the QBs if Hill plays well again tonight I think that he gets the nod over Callahan. A decent - good effort by Callahan probably earns him a look from another team. On the DL the Packers should keep Daniels, Clark, Lowry, Francois, Price and Ringo. OLBs I expect Perry, CM3, Ahmad Brooks, Fackrell and Eliott. I only see Gilbert hanging on if Beigel were to end up on IR rather than PUP. No injuries tonight. Thanks, Since '61

Aloha, and here's hoping the Pack makes it to the Bowl next February! I say keep Clark for sure. AR will need him in big games, to pull down that big catch. Clark can outreach anyone and he works hard at his craft. A keeper IMO.

I have a hard time believing that TT would keep Clark over his two draft picks....but he's the one guy that the team could use and brings something the others don't when they get close to the goaline. All the others need more seasoning.

RBs, I'm not sure how many they keep. Tonight they will answer that question with their performance.

Should be no questions that Gilbert makes it, The only issue that I see is Ringo and Price. Wish they keep both.

I think Clark needs a year on the PS and would be best if he was kept there. That being said if he has as huge game tonight, I think they will have a hard time cutting him.

A player with his abilities is rare and they haven't had a guy like him before. If he was forced to play, he can simply use his size to make plays that others can't. From what I have heard from camp practices I think he has had more flash plays then Yancey, Dupre and McCaffrey. Though I haven't been there so I can't say for sure.

I am looking forward to watching this battle tonight. Those 4 players have a real shot of making the 53.

There is a chance they are planning to stash some players on the practice squad. Those are the ones who won't see much action tonight. For example, who would pick up Dupre for their 53 based on what they have seen so far? Practice means a lot to the Packers. They've seen enough of many of their rookies to know whom they would like to hide.

Well, NFL Game Pass sure does suck. Otherwise interesting 1st half.

Is Don Barclays the only backup center that will make the 53? Murphy can play both tackle & Guard spots. Seems we need a center/guard depth....

Sorry to go all bandwagon here, but I really don't see a big difference between Aaron Jones and Dalvin Cook.
