Good insight Al, as always. You could see Jackson grab and then interfer with the receiver, though it was not called. I am glad that he was traded today, though Yiadom graded about the same from PFF last year. Both players needed a change. Dangerous throw by Love, and as you said, he needs reps and practice. Rodgers was not a good QB his first two years, and did not start until year four. This is a deep roster with a difficult schedule. I am optimistic for a fun year of Packer football.

Part of the problem on the pass by Love is that he is looking towards that spot the entire time before he released the pass. He may not have been staring down the receiver but he was definitely staring down the spot. I also noticed during the game that h stared down his receiver on a number of plays as well. He will need to work on that as he (hopefully) continues to improve.

Cardinal sin for an RB is to veer off without securing the handoff. Almost always causes a fumble unless the QB realizes it and pulls the ball back. Benkert is not experienced enough to realize that yet. After playing HS and College football Hill should know better. It is a correctable issue as long as the coaches stay on top of it.

Jackson's play may have stayed in the end zone if the receiver was able to secure the ball and get his feet down. In any case Jackson could have been flagged for DPI. He's traded away now, maybe the new guy will be able to play.

And Packers put 2 players on reserve/injured list - Nauta & Thompkins and released OL Zack Johnson. They will sign QB Jake Dolegala, but they need to make another roster cut or put someone on IR.

The Jackson play showed why he is gone...he just has poor instincts and cannot recover and is grabby.

Love made a risky decision but wow, nice targeted throw even if telegraphed. He must correct that.

I was watching NFL Live today and there was a pointed discussion about Trevor Lawrence. Apparently Cleveland's second defensive line nearly ate Lawrence for lunch. Jacksonville has a mediocre offensive line.

I agreed with Keyshawn Johnson who made the point that Lawrence should NOT be nailed down as the starter right away before he learns the pro game. He could be sacked 30 times this year and he said we've seen all too much what happens(Trubisky and Darnold as examples) what happens when bad teams put young quarterbacks in a position to be destroyed. They lose their confidence and forget what got them where they were in college.

Laura Rutledge and Mina Kimes(both of whom I assume never played tackle football) said he has to play because he was so good in college, forgetting, apparently, the quality of play difference between the pros and college. Kimes repeated he was too good to sit. Johnson said he isn't ready and could end up on the rocks. Both Rutledge and Kimes were dumbfounded by this assessment made by a former NFL great wide receiver. Keep this in mind when I refer to the national sports media dopes.

Which brings me to Love. Starting back with Ron Wolf the Packers love to draft QB's to develop to learn the game before they're thrown to the wolves. I think the slow develop approach with Love is the right one as he appears to be ready to play the game, though more work needs to be done.

I won't micro-analyze Love at this point, or the other rookies for that matter. Like your first day on the job, given patience and coaching, you got better at your work. What the rookies need to do is not repeatedly make the same mistakes.

How many people get the reference to ""Plays that make you go hmmm"? Arsenio Hall, who also had the audience woof at him for some reason. Anyway, the throw by Love to Rodgers was dangerous because the ball took a long time to get to the receiver. If Love can't get more velocity on the ball, he is not a franchise QB. Then again, the coaches were saying he is learning to trust his instincts, and needs to learn to use his natural arm strength to make plays like that. Hopefully they're right.

For the record: On the Jackson play he may get called for interference (often it is not), but the receiver's knee did land in-bounds.

In any case, he was not making the team, so good to get another lottery ticket.

Nice article. One nit to pick is whether JL should have thrown that pass. Yes, it’s a bit risky, but if he and Amari have more reps/time together, that is a completion. He really puts it where only the receiver can get to it, if only a bit too inside. If that pass is completed we are talking about a great pass. I like that he tries that in pre-season, shows confidence.

Jackson played 556 special teams snaps for the Packers. Yiadom played 498. Maybe the quality of Yiadom's ST snaps was better. IDK, worth a shot.

To me it looks like Hill was never expecting to receive the ball at all. It looks like he was expecting play action, and was just running the fake when all of a sudden he's surprised to have a ball in his gut for real.

Hmmm. Van Lanen beaten like a drum by Lawson on the fumble between Benkert and Hill. Van Lanen held and still lost the rep.

Hmmm. Kelly looked bad in just 28 snaps. It took 52 snaps for Nijman to look that bad. Runyan played something like 15 snaps at guard and got beat in pass pro three times. One didn't count as a pressure since Hill threw a quick out to Malik Taylor, but Runyan got beat in 1.9 seconds. Runyan played the rest of his snaps at center, where he had no pass pro issues. Runyan and Myers were the only OL to break 60 with PFF for run grades.

Hmmm. Maybe Patrick thought he should have been the 31st guy not playing?

The play that showed good/bad for Jlove has amplified badness if you look from another angle. Devin F is trailing Rodgers on a similar route, but closer to the left sideline and has his man beat by 2 or 3 steps, wide open. Llove decided early to throw to a well covered A Rodgers when a big play was right there in front of him to DF. Again, a teachable moment. GPG!

I think Hills was a mental error….looked like Hill was trying to fake accept the hand off because he ran right to what looked like a blocking assignment. Can’t be certain though.
