Packers Vs. Vikings - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on a theme, the less obvious, or things I didn't notice watching live. These are not likely to be "highlight" plays.

Love Heave - This is all about situational awareness. The Packers have a third and five, down by seven points, with 90 seconds left in the half. The Vikings will get the ball to start the second half, so the last thing you want to do here is give them the ball back with an opportunity to double-up. And yet, Love decides to try an all-or-nothing heave where the receiver is not even close to open. If you stop the video right at the point where he starts his throw, you'll see that the DB is actually running in front of Melton. Meanwhile, he has Josh Jacobs, who has leaked out of the backfield right in his line of sight. A simple pass leading Jacobs towards the sideline gets the Packers a first down. You can call this second-guessing, but throwing deep on third down has been a major pet peeve of mine starting with Aaron Rodgers. Now the explanation always was, they had a one-on-one matchup they really liked so they went for it. OK. Now remember, Rodgers was also throwing to guys like Jordy Nelson and then Davante Adams, two receivers that excelled in pulling long passes in and making difficult catches. Rodgers was also more accurate with his deep throws than Love, whose less than pinpoint deep throws often require the receivers to make adjustments to meet the ball.  Stating all of this, my tolerance for wasting opportunities to keep drives alive is pretty low for this iteration of the Packers' offense. I'll also add that sending a receiver in motion and expecting him to beat a DB long on a big winding route like this is quite unrealistic. Final polluted thought - does the fact that Love takes a 12 yard drop indicate the deep shot was actually the primary call and not just a Love decision? If so, that would piss me off even more.

Coooooooooooooooooop! - Wow. Watching Edgerrin Cooper play makes me wistfully lament those years in the 2010's where the Packers just refused to use a Day 1 or 2 pick on an inside linebacker. Instead, we were asked to be content with the likes of Brad Jones, Paul Ryan, Blake Martinez, etc. (sorry to those guys). Seeing a #56 flash across my screen like this pollutes my mind into thinking we are looking at a young Lawrence Taylor. Now, slow down, I'm not predicting that Cooper even approaches the greatness of LT, but damn my mental film library full of videos watching LT explode to the ball carrier sure looks similar to what I'm seeing here. It's unlikely he would ever reach the pass rushing heights to approach Taylor, but whatever level he eventually reaches, it's sure going to be fun watching Cooper play for the Packers for years to come

Hoppin' Bad - We've been hearing this year about how much work Jordan Love and Tom Clements have been putting in working on Love's footwork in the pocket. We even saw some games when he returned from his injuries where the improvement was obvious and palpable. And then Love goes and has a game like this where he reverts to those same old bad habits. On this play I count no less that four backward hops in this drop back before splitting his legs wide and throwing while leaning backward in that position. Yes, there is some pressure coming from his left, but the pocket inside is clean. A simple step in to the pocket (um, footwork) and he can thrown with his feet set correctly and his body in a forward motion. This throw is all arm, and he does manage to almost get it to Wicks, but this is making things so much harder than it has to be. Back to the drill work, Tom and Jordan.

Thanks Al. I really like the film work you guys do here.

No need to comment on those bad plays. We've been doing that since Monday. Looking at most of yours and Dusty's play choices, shows almost always someone else open and usually an easier throw and catch. Late last season I was excited he wasn't always choosing the dump off plays, but this season Love rarely has been checking down when he needs to. Like you say, is it in the play calls, regression or over confidence?

Give some me more of that Cooooper. I thought that he was reminding me more of a Brian Urlacher type of game wrecker (forgive the Bears reference) as I thought LT usually had his hand in the dirt on pass plays.

Urlacher was a bigger LB. Cooper is more about pure speed. Taylor did do most of his damage as a pass rusher, but he could track players down across the field like few others I've seen.

Cooper has been a revelation. Now what the Packers need is to find a DL who can display the same sort of skill and get some pressure on the QB with only a four man front.
Thanks for pointing out what the problem with Love was in this game. It could also be a result of being so relentlessly pressured, and the Vikings going with more "man" than zone coverage. Brian Flores certainly has the defense hitting on all cylinders. The question being, what will it take to have the Packers get pressure when they are facing a good OL, and not just padding their stats against the Seven Blocks of Jello.

Easy, easy Packer fans...back in your stalls.

The Packers are doing just enough to get into the playoffs and then, win THE WHOLE THING with the worst record possible.

This is all a plan for keeping us happy and excited for the 2025 NFL Draft being held at our stomping grounds.

Them boys are some "dumb as a fox" -type at 1265 Lombardi Ave.

PB and J

*All we have to do is be patient until AI (artificial intelligence and not Al the author) develops the first NFL Head Coach. Without being greedy, letz let da Bears have the first prototype.

I think I would have included the 4th and 2 play. It wasn't the best throw but Reed looked like he slowed down after his break for some reason and still should have caught. They convert that and it's likely a different game IMO.

What I have seen on many plays from this game is our receivers just run straight routes, no stop and go, or misdirection. Just a straight route that the defender can just stay with them. Man coverage should be easy to beat and get separation but our receivers just don't do that. Quick slants and sharp crossing routes should get open but we don't run those for some reason.

If it's so easy to defend our receivers, why are we one of the best passing teams in the league?

That's why we're only "one of the best". Not the best.

Actually, if they were going to have a stinker, it's better to do it the 2nd time you play them than the 3rd.

now that's a POV i can support. I still wish MLF had started Willis and rested Jacobs. Oh well.

That is one of the maddening things about the Packers. I sometimes criticize Love, sometimes the receivers, sometimes the line, but the bottom line is that the Packers are 8th in points scored at 27.4 per game, and that's with a high of 38 points (not some 70-point game against some hapless opponent skewing the numbers). The Packers had 2 rough games scoring with points under 20, but otherwise they are very consistently in the twenties and thirties.

I just think they could explode if the eliminate mistakes.

I think the deep shot before half-time was called by MLF. MLF and some of his calls are making Love look worse than he is. The Packers won't win the SB, so now is the time to let Love breathe, let him rip it, stop over-relying on Jacobs. Love is a nice, stoic guy and takes too much heat for some of MLF's weaknesses and some of the WR's issues as well.

Do any players or coaches ever admit their limitations and walk away? On their way out, it would be wonderful if some of these people returned a large portion of their current year's salary to the team. I'm talking about Rashan, Jaire, Clark, Rodgers, Bakh? MLF may need to add himself to that list at some point--Bisaccia as well.

"On their way out, it would be wonderful if some of these people returned a large portion of their current year's salary"

Like bad actors if the play or movie that bombs?

These players earn every cent they get. They aren't acting. They put their life and bodies on the line. These are the guys who, if they weren't so (freaks of nature) athletic would be on Seal Team 6.

You have to keep your offense on the field if you want to run plays and score. I saw that play and shook my head because a simple toss to Jacobs....who didn't get enough touches.....would have given us three more opportunities. Love has been around the block enough times now that he should be better about this.

Cooper is a good addition to the team. No doubt. Him, McKinney, Williams, Bullard.....all good additions who'll be under contract for 3 more seasons.....which is pretty much the Love Window.

Love's throwing mechanics bother me, as I'm kind of old school on this and I like to see my QB stepping up and rifling strikes, not leaning back and going all arm on a touch throw. Joe Namath was all arm, and didn't step into his throws, but he's an exception. Still, he's got a real good arm, even though I think it would be even better if he stepped into his throws.

Hey we agree on something. Being able to throw off platform is a plus but it's a minus when you have a QB doing it when it's not needed. Love's completion percentage could easily be four or five points higher if he used proper footwork when in a clean pocket. I doubt he'll ever be a 70% passer and his yards per attempt is one of the highest in the league but bumping his 63.2% completions up to 67.5% would likely mean less turnovers and more points. Right now he's 9.7% below league leading Tua. It's some an off season of footwork could fix but if it doesn't happen this off-season I doubt it ever does.

A more stout IOL would potentially help dramatically. He’s often anticipating meeting Myers or an opponent in the pocket even if it doesn’t actually materialize. Fix our OL and a lot of these problems may decrease immediately or by enabling Love to keep better habits. The weak OL (C & RG) has consequences that are many and pervasive.

Its about processing Leather ... Jacobs was covered somewhat but if you watch the first clip the right side of the line opened up a huge gap for Love to break through and run for easy first down but Loves instincts never recognized.
Also many NFL QBs ( Darnold ) shift there feet in the pocket its about staying light and reposition your shoulders to throw at your target, unfortunately Love is hoping straight up and down and then leans backward throwing the ball and depending 100% on arm strength... he's been in the league five years now ???

Plays 1 and 3 remind me of the stale McCarthy offense in the later years. To exacerbate the situation, our receivers have difficulty sometimes in man coverage as seen here. Maybe MLF would like to focus more on developing a crisp short and intermediate passing game at some point ? We need it. I like the deep shots to Watson, though, when he's open (and available, of course).

The is the second time I've heard Cooper and LT mentioned in the same breath here. Hold on: Cooper has the speed and the football instincts, but the power of LT was just phenomenal, especially when brushing aside linemen and pouncing on QBs--sometimes throwing them to the ground with one arm

The LT reference is just a visual thing. #56, faster than most running backs, chases them down from behind the play, etc. As I wrote, "I'm not predicting that Cooper even approaches the greatness of LT."

There are plenty of great speedy linebackers to use as equivalents. Lawrence Taylor is an unfair marker. Cooper is a prospect to be sure, LT was the standard no one will ever come close to.

fair enough, but you're old. you remember. he was a crazed maniac. what he did to Theisman was gruesome. Also, the league now frowns on guys being so jacked up on cocaine that they're borderline psychotic.

I mentioned it a week or so ago, but when Joe looked up at Lawrence and said "I'll be back, Lawrence laughed and said "not today"

What are the odds Willis plays the 2nd half of the Bears game? I would certainly like to see it and he deserves it. Slim to none, probably. Unless we go up 30-0 at half.

Love 'elite' status has certainly crumbled quickly. Jumping ahead - obviously, he plays out whatever season is left but it's going to be a sad season next year if we repeat the slow start again. Gute isn't going to admit failure so easily. I wonder what the Packers will be offered for Willis in the off season?

While I'm at it - what are the odds MLF gives up play calling? I would like to see that too!

3rd and 5 bomb - As in the game day thread, I'm yelling nooooo. No Hindsight needed. Even if that catch was caught, I'd say no. 3 time outs, small amount of time, don't give them extra opportunity on turnover of downs, deep low percentage pass, Double coverage. Just idiotic. I think that was a MLF call. A bad call. Take the "move the chains" calls and continue on. I don't think MLF has the patience for that. His belief in his superior play calling gets in the way. These receivers are good, but not that good, and no Watson, even with his sometimes-untimely drops, and the other pass catchers drops, screams no. LeFleur needs to have a better, outside the Packer bubble, evaluation of this team's talent overall, especially OL. Jacobs / Kraft - anyone, anyone?

Cooper - stud, game changing talent. Use him to exhaustion, because the rest of the LB's are average at best. Walker would not save this game and may have hindered it more.

Love - no doubt has talent but needs more refinement. Farve and Rodgers had quirks too. Decision making, in spite of coaches calls, needs to improve. I think there may be a bit of "I don't want to be compared to those two, so will trust my coach", in his decisions. I get that young man, but make your own path. Time will teach and hopefully learn.

Overall - This team need to rid itself of "fear of failure" coaching. I don't give a rats ass, (as coaches have token said "next man up", but in reality don't really trust it), who is in. Call an offense and defense based on your supposed superior scheme. If a player doesn't perform, find one who will. Other teams have beaten us with 2nd/3rd string QB's and position players and yet this team blames our 1st string is out. Get over yourselves.
