Packers waive Cole Madison and Jordan Jones
Madison is coming off a torn ACL suffered in practice late last season.

The Green Bay Packers have released FB Jordan Jones and G Cole Madison. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transactions Friday.
Madison was selected by the Packers in the fifth round (No. 138 overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Washington State.
Madison is coming off a torn ACL suffered in practice last November. At the time, Matt LaFleur, said “My heart breaks for him, man. He works hard, and he’s getting better, and it’s just one of those bad injuries.”
Jones was as most likely deemed expendable after the claim of John Lovett off waivers from Kansas City yesterday.

The end of the Cole Madison Era. Now he can teach PE and coach HS football. I hope he saved some of his money.

I'm starting to understand the rules now. You can mock Packer players, but not 'denigrate' them.

I don't know why we drafted Madison in the first place--didn't the Packers know he had some issues?

Apparently not!
He had a chance but his decision to sit out his first year doomed his career. Feel bad for him as he likely will have regrets the rest of his life.
The good thing is the Packers interior line is much better. 2021 first round likely should be a Tackle at this point.

It was thought.....he couldn't attend July training camp and sat out the season because he was distraught over his friends suicide in January of 2018.
It was thought that, because nobody would say why.
The problem was, he was ok to sign his contract and cash his check, he was ok to attend a mini camp (May) and voluntary camp in June.
My contention was he discovered he needed to bulk up to play in the NFL and get stronger.
But regardless, he manged to pocket $1.258 million without playing a snap. Only in America

Fifth round draft picks are nothing to sneeze at; think Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, and Tyreek Hill, to name a few. Nobody's saying they'll all turn out like that, but you can strike gold in this round.
The bottom line is that the 2018 draft yielded one solid player (Alexander), two cuts, and four players who have show more if they want to remain with the team. We'll never get to the Super Bowl with drafts like this, and hopefully the 2019 class is going to be a lot more productive in a shorter period of time.

Well, I can cherry pick 6th and 7th round picks as well. There are always exceptions. WAY more 5th round picks don't make it than do. To suggest a GM didn't do his homework because a 5th round pick doesn't pan out is silly.
I will agree the 2018 draft was a disaster at this point, but certainly not because of Cole Madison.

And, besides, this wasn't necessarily a "bad" pick in the typical sense. This young man had mental/emotional issues he was trying to work through...then had a serious ACL injury. GM's don't have crystal balls.
Oren Burks and J'Mon Moore were the really horrible picks. And maybe even Josh Jackson.

I'm trying not to be too cold, but it's a wasted pick nonetheless if that pick never sees the field. Like I said in another comment, Madison wouldn't be that big of a deal if Gute doesn't make so many poor/questionable selections. Oh yeah, and George Kittle too in the fifth round.....

And Tom Brady in the 6th round. What obvious outlier late round picks has anything to do with this is beyond me. Oh yeah, and Bart Starr in the 17th. How about we look at all the 5th round picks that HAVEN'T made it over the course of the last 10-15 years?
It's not Cole Madison's fault the 2018 draft sucked. I don't understand you blaming him.

I'm not blaming him. I was simply responding to your original implication that fifth-round picks aren't that important. Every draft pick is an opportunity to improve the team.

This is more to do with transitioning to LaFluer power run slash play action system. This team is going to have the Ahman Green ground attack with more physical road grading run blockers. The draft showed us that the team is headed in a new direction. This is about being balanced and dictating terms on offense.

Madison is a 5th round draft pick. Stop acting like Gute made some huge mistake here in drafting Madison. One stat I was able to find is that only 37% of 5th round draft picks made it to year 3. Another interesting stat I found, 53% of 1st round picks make it to year 5.

Once again, a fifth-round pick isn't some throwaway selection like Mr. Irrelevant; and I forgot to mention George Kittle in my last comment on this topic. Besides, the Madison pick and subsequent cut wouldn't be as big of a deal if Gute hadn't made so many mistakes in the 2018 draft.
