Packers' Watson in Midst of Annual “Heater”

Packers wide receiver Christian Watson has five receiving touchdowns this season, all coming in the last four games.

When the calendar hits November, Christian Watson has made it a habit of making his presence felt in a big way for the Green Bay Packers offense. In Sunday’s 28-21 win over the division-rival Chicago Bears, Watson had a pair of touchdown catches, which gave Watson five touchdown catches in the Packers last four games.

After the Week 9 injury to Tucker Kraft, the Packers struggled mightily against the Panthers and Eagles. But since that game, Watson has been treated as the Packers’ No. 1 wide receiver the last month with team highs in receptions (17), yards (264) and touchdowns (5).

Year Opponent Rec, Yds, TDs
2022 Dallas 4 rec, 107 yds, 3 TDs
  Tennessee 4 rec, 48 yds, 2 TDs
at Philadelphia 4 rec, 110 yds, 1 TD
at Chicago 3 rec, 48 yds, 1 TD & Rush TD
2023 LA Chargers 2 rec, 21 yds, 1 TD
at Detroit 5 rec, 94 yds, 1 TD
Kansas City 7 rec, 71 yds, 2 TDs
2024 at Chicago 4 rec, 150 yds
  Miami 2 rec, 67 yds
at Detroit 4 rec, 114 yds
at Seattle 3 rec, 56 yds
2025 at NY Giants 4 rec, 46 yds, 2 TDs
  Minnesota 5 rec, 49 yds
at Detroit 4 rec, 80 yds, 1 TD
  Chicago 4 rec, 89 yds, 2 TDs

Getting on a hot streak like this is nothing new for the 4th-year wide receiver from North Dakota State. Going back to his rookie season, Watson has had similar “hot” stretches each season, which all have come in November and December games.

In 2022, over a stretch of four games, Watson had nine total touchdowns, eight of which were receiving scores. Four of the nine were from 39 yards or longer.

Including his rushing touchdown in the 2022 win in Chicago, Watson has six career multi-touchdown games, all coming in these four-game stretches throughout his career. His multi-touchdown game totals compare very favorably with the top wide receivers the Packers have had in the last 30-plus years.

Multi-TD Games (including playoffs)

Player Years in GB Games
Davante Adams 2014-2021 16
Antonio Freeman 1995-2001, 2003 16
Jordy Nelson 2008-2017 15
Sterling Sharpe 1988-1994 13
Randall Cobb 2011-2018, 2021-22 10
Greg Jennings 2006-2012 9
Christian Watson 2022-2025 6
James Jones 2007-2013, 2015 6
Donald Driver 1999-2012 4

This group includes four players who led in receiving touchdowns during a season: Sterling Sharpe (1992 & 1994), James Jones (2012), Jordy Nelson (2016) and Davante Adams (2020).

Watson’s 41-yard catch and run in the third quarter on Sunday was very reminiscent of the first Jordan Love to Watson touchdown connection, a 63-yard touchdown catch and run in Philadelphia in 2022.

In the last two weeks, Watson has had his first two 40-yard plus touchdown catches since his 44-yarder against Arizona last year. In his rookie season had four touchdowns of 39 yards or more, as he has become Jordan Love’s big play guy in the passing attack.

Watson’s 41-yard touchdown against the Bears was also reminiscent of Jordy Nelson’s famous 45-yard catch and run touchdown in the 2014 Patriots game. Nelson became synonymous for big, explosive plays as a Packers wide receiver from 2008 to 2017.

From 2010 to 2014, Nelson had 19 total touchdown catches of 40 yards or more, including one in each season. He had an astounding six of them in 2011 and seven of them in 2014.

For the Packers to continue this upward trajectory of their offense in the next month, they likely will need Watson to continue his big-play capability in the deep passing game that he has provided since returning from last season’s torn ACL injury.

Here's some pointless information. B.J. is 39. His full name is Busari Alamu Raji Jr.

Don't sell yourself short, dbl. One man's pointless information is another man's breaking news. Now I know the rest of the story.

It certainly isn't pointless info...Bursaries Alamu Raji Jr scored 6 points after that most beautiful interception return for a TD.

Thanks dblbog,

PB

#11 has been our WR1 for at least 2 years. Great to see #9 used like that upon his return. Did you notice how #11 was tackled after his first reception? The tackler deliberately stressed his shoulders as much as he could, trying to break his collar bone again.

Meh, I think he was just trying to make a physical play, regardless of who the receiver was.

I still want Golden to step up.
He shouldn't have to wait.
The more speed on the field the better.

I've been theorizing that Golden is still struggling either with knowledge of the playbook or his routes haven't been accurate. Nothing more than a guess.

I wonder this because I'd expect him to have more opportunities by now, and his talent is obvious and immense.. Also, it seems like there have been a number of times where two receivers are stacked on one another down field, it it seems like when that happens, Golden is frequently one of the receivers in question.

Yep, could be. I was wondering if Love's INT was just a bad throw/read or if Golden didn't run the correct depth of the route?

I was literally about to post the same thing about depth of route on Al's article, but saw you made the comment here. I had originally figured that Love either didn't see the defender, but after MLF's comments, I wondered if Love was expecting golden's break 10 yards shallow, it may have been an anticipation throw and the target wasn't underneath the coverage where he was expecting him.

He's been banged up and probably missing practice reps. This guy is dynamic in and out of his breaks. No one on the team with faster feet. Now, he should be getting his body and timing back. His day is coming. I would use these guys like the "Three Amigos." If they didn't want this guy Tyliek Williams was there to plug the middle.

Me like me some dance moves (saw Watson pull out the griddy with style).

Speaking of dance moves I would like to see da Pack perform after a TD or sack:

Check out this little number (towards the end, looks like a Gumby move):

Watson has come back early and better than ever. His hands are so strong now, route-running and contested catch chances vastly improved.

People forgot about Reed, He is a killer and will offset the huge loss of Kraft. Although it's still a big loss. But Reed was GBs top receiver last two years for a reason, and picked up where he left off. He will only get better.

Wicks, Doubs, Golden, Savion will all contribute. Amazing game by Wicks 2 weeks ago. GB is loaded. How do you defend all of them and even Musgrave/Fitzpatrick/Whyle stepping up? On top of Jacobs, Wilson and Brooks. And potentially LLoyd. An explosive offense with Toyotathon Love killing it. This team is about to go off.

Savion Williams is severely underrated. Maybe he doesn't contribute until next year, but he could become a monster!

And I'm being remiss to not mention how good that defense is. If Parsons could get a call, these games would be blowouts. But Cooper, Williams, McKinney, Walker, Bullard, McDuffie, Gary, Enegbare flying around. Best D we've seen in a decade. Big props to Hafley. Hope he stays for a another year,
