My initial thoughts on Mims was that he was a raw, oft-injured and an OT outlier for the Packers. Then I decided to do some research - to arrive at my own conclusions. I'm pleased that I did. First, Mims is just an impressive physical specimen @ 6'8" and 340 lbs. and 36" arms. There are few football players with his physique, frame and movement skills.

Next, his injuries. He did miss a good portion of his 2023 season due to a high ankle sprain - that was caused when rolled-up on during a play. Not really his fault. It could happen to any player at anytime. Also he injured his hamstring at the NFL combine after posting a 5.07 40 yard dash on his first try - thus contributing to his 9.57 RAS score. As O-lineman usually do not sprint 40 yards during a play - I consider this injury of little relevance.

Next - his college tape. Yes he's only had 803 college snaps but that amounted to good tape. On it he only allowed 2/3 QB hurries and no sacks. Plus there were quite a few pancakes on running plays. We should also be mindful that at 21 years old - he won't have the snap counts of draftees 1-3 years older than him. I recall that Lukas Van Ness was drafted last year in the first round by GB as a 21 year old with only about 1000 college snaps on his record.

Lastly, if GB is looking for a swing tackle for Tom and Wallace - Mims could fill that spot. While Mims has played exclusively at RT - he has also practiced at Left - stating that he's comfortable at both positions.

So Mims at 25? Absolutely (for me).

Mims in round one looks like a boom or bust pick. He looks the part but he’s raw, needs technical refinement that a round one player shouldn’t. Additionally he took till last year to show up and yet despite lack of wear has had regular injuries. None serious individually, although tightrope surgery might cause some concern in an athlete of his age and size, but is it bad luck, conditioning or what?

A brave pick. A pick on potential not performance, on build not endurance or technique. He could be the greatest T ever, but he currently won’t start and the rest is upside on a player who was slow to show up in college.

Very high ceiling, low floor. Gute likes those, but I don’t think T is the position to do that if we really don’t trust what we have and in a draft with a number of good Ts with a higher floor.

Suamataia in the next round seems a better place to take such a risk if we really want to. Not all that different athletically either. Not quite as tall, long but not as long arms, similar testing. Needs about the same amount of technical improvement. Guyton is another, but I prefer Suamataia to him as well.

Completely agree with everything you said, CW.

I think (and hope) that Gute would prefer Suamataia to Mims.
Mims could be the next Mandarich--the monster who disappears.

I have some hope that Fautana drops to the Packers; he did in my personal full NFL first round mock. I predict QBs and CBs will go over the second tier of OL. Teams will be willing to use their second-round picks on OL instead, since there is so much depth there. I think the second round will see a LOT of O-lineman picked.

If the Packers took Mims or would be a reverse of everything they've looked for in a tackle in the last twenty years.

Mims 6'8" 340, Mt Caleb 6'9" under 340 at the beginning of the last OTAs. While I love the idea of these being our OTs, the closest we have to anybody playing is Nijman at 6'7". I thought he got done dirty rather than being eliminated on merit, but I will not say he blew all his competition out of the water.

I have no idea what GB will do. I'm hoping Gutey and MLF are on the same page, with Hafley right there.

McKinstry would still be my first choice at 25. So a McKinstry and Suamataia 1st and 2nd round combo would be attractive.

Certainly Mims and Guyton @ 25 would be a more adventurous pick for Gutekunst. However I don't quite agree that it would be entirely based on potential. His 800 snaps while not a long history - is a good enough history. In this way I don't regard Mims as strictly a developmental project. Leaving the main concern for Mims (and Guyton) as one of height and weight.

It seems to me that there is a certain height and weight limit - after which OTs are not as durable. I liken it to my horse racing operation - when it was usually more of a challenge to keep the larger horses physically sound (as well as my bank account). Probably there is a physics and structural engineering explanation to this tendency. Perhaps the same for OTs - who are over 6'6" and 325 lbs. - with both Mims and Guyton over that limit. With my draft board still in flux - I may now have to revisit some of my assessments. Not an unusual pre-draft practice for me these days.

I'd be EXTREMELY happy if we got McKinstry and Suamataia at 25 and 41.
I think it's a toss-up between McKinstry and DeJean as to which one will be better.

Suamataia is the perfect pick at 41, in my opinion. He backs up Tom and Walker this year, or takes one of their jobs if he shines early. Then he becomes a starter next year, and Tom moves to center as Myers leaves.

Hopefully we pick up a good guard prospect at pick 126, though they may be gone, but guards, like safeties, tend to go later than you'd expect. I'd love to nab any one of Haynes, Mahogany, Limmer, or McCormick at that pick.

Mims certainly sounds like a big guy with tons of developmental potential. The same was said about Caleb Jones who is a behemoth of a man. The only thing about the Packers is they seem to lack the ability to develop him. Caleb is listed at 370. Why not have him come into camp at a sleek 350 lbs ? In one of the very few games he played he was a highlight film unto himself. For that; his reward was more time on the bench? C'mon man.

Jones came in last season way under 350. CW has the exact weight. They always list the at their original weights, for some reason.

Last I recall reported was a coach (Stenavich I think) referring to 333 and suggesting a few more to about 228 was intended. I think late in preseason last year.

Again from memory, he was 245 ish at rookie minicamp in his first year, 337 by camp. He’d played at over 400 at some point in the prior season.

@mattschneidman
“Packers OC Adam Stenavich is "really excited" about the future of undrafted rookie OT Caleb Jones. He's 6 feet, 9 inches tall, and Stenavich said he's gone from 370 pounds to 335 since arriving in Green Bay.” 4:21 PM · Dec 16, 2022. (Most apt quote I could dig up on a quick dive.)

He’s listed forever at 370 because all NFL players are permanently listed as the tested weight at the combine or pro day (as here). That never changes.

You can throw his athletic testing out of the window as a result. I don’t think he’d be here at his 370 mobility levels. He apparently looked a radically different athlete even by the 245 weight, per Stenovich early that summer. Also that degree of accelerated weight loss can mess with testing anyway. It’s worth noting that Jones was considered technically raw on arrival by Stenavich technically too.

Caleb entered OTAs under 340 last year, and was DOMINANT in practices.

If Mims is available they got to take him, I would go so far as to move up ahead of Dallas and Minn, both who will jump on Mims ahead of GB

No throwing away tons of draft capital to get one player, please. Plenty of talent available to let the draft come to us. Some here want Gutey to trade back, which I fear might be risky. Gutey does love to wheel and deal ...
