Pressure on Young Pass Rushers After Packers Trade Smith
The Packers will be relying on improvement from front seven players such as Lukas Van Ness, Quay Walker and Kingsley Enagbare, as well as others, to add more to the pass rush after the trading of veteran edge rusher Preston Smith.

With the trading of the second oldest player on the Green Bay Packers roster in Preston Smith, the pressure is now on the remaining front seven players to make an impact in both the pass rush and defending of the run.
Smith joined the Packers as a free agent signing in 2019 and he soon became one of the most reliable and productive players the team has had in the last five and a half seasons. He never missed a game, playing in all 98 games including playoffs, and he leaves the team with the most sacks since 2019 with 44.
In the last several games, the transition from Smith as the other starting defensive end had already begun. In the last three games he was under 30 snaps in both the Lions and Texans games. He had a season-low 21 snaps vs. the Lions.
With Rashan Gary starting on one side and now without Smith on the other side, a slew of second-year and third-year players will now be counted on to provide more pass rush in the second half of the season.

Those players are: Kingsley Enagbare, Lukas Van Ness, Devonte Wyatt, Karl Brooks, Colby Wooden, Brenton Cox Jr, and Arron Mosby.
So far this season, the Packers front has been rather anemic when it comes to rushing the passer. The team’s sack leader is Davonte Wyatt with three, an interior rusher, who missed three games to an ankle injury. Gary, Smith and linebacker Edgeriin Cooper each have 2.5; Keisan Nixon and Eric Wilson have two sacks; followed by Quay Walker, Enagbare and Brooks with 1.5.
The Titans benched their right tackle and Jeff Hafley said "just put all the EDGEs out there."

A year and a half into his career, Van Ness just has one sack this year, tied with safety Xavier McKinney. For his career, Van Ness now has five sacks.
The Packers got a glimpse of free agent Arron Mosby on Sunday against the Lions. The third year player out of Fresno State had an impressive rush against Lions right tackle Penei Sewell, resulting in a second-quarter sack.

Without the veteran Smith, the Packers look to youth to solve its pass rush struggles for the remainder of the season.

This armchair coach wonders if the scheme change on D is effecting the production of the edge rushers. Their stats are off, but is this truly an indicator of poorer play and less effectiveness, or is pressure coming from elsewhere, more evenly?
Any thoughts?

Good question Jont. I would love to hear from commentators who have coached or played, but I do suspect that playing with your hand in the dirt is different than rushing from a two point stance. Certainly the leverage would be different.
And while the stats are down a bit, the Packers haven't had a really good pass rush for awhile. When Z. Smith left the Packers lost their one true speed rusher who could just blow by guys. Gary, LVN, and P. Smith are all more power rush guys.
I suspect we will see more of Enagbare (6' 3", 258), Mosby (6' 3", 250), and Cox (6' 4", 250) as smaller, more agile and hopefully faster guys who can get quick pressure on the QB. Something the Packers haven't had for several years.

A three point stance ......lowers your pad level. I'm sorry. I had to say that.
But nonetheless, it's true.
You could also look to track sprints, and people usually start the race with a hand on the ground. A 2 point stance may give an advantage in agility, but it also makes it harder to over power a guy because he'll have the lower pad level. Sorry again.
Enagbare has earned more time on the field, IMO, not just because of this season, but because of all the work he's put in. VanNess needs to be given more opportunities. Mosby certainly has shown an ability to make plays on defense.
Here's what I'm thinking: Do the Packers feel they're legitimate contenders for the NFC Championship? I think they do. They obviously think we're a better team going forward without him, and it doesn't really benefit us financially to do this, and a 7th round pick is not much,
Instead, we get better, younger players on the field and Smith gets to finish his career with a decent franchise that he probably indicated was OK with him. So, everybody is happy, or should be. Packers get younger and faster, Smith gets to be in a good place, Enagbare et. al get their chance to play.

I have a theory that pass rushes are 'better' in the late season than they are earlier in the season. The only thing that I can attribute that to is injuries. You've got backup Olinemen and backup WRs and the coverage is a little bit tighter and the pass rush just seems to be more intense.
Or maybe it's the weather, and these large bodies work better in the cold.
Like I said, it's only a theory . But I think it's a valid theory.

As for the players I would say that they are better as a 4-3 end as most of them played an end in a 4-3 in college. The sacks and pressures might be lower because it is easier for a line to determine who is coming from a 4-3. This is one of the reasons I do not like the 4-3.

Apparently Smith requested the trade to get back to an odd base front. The Packers obliged.

It appears that it was easy for the Packers to give into that request as they have saved on cap space. Everyone wins in this trade.

Yesterday, November 05, 2024, at 11:34 am I wrote:
"We Packer fans will be most fortunate if "Gutey" doesn't trade Jaire, Romeo, Christian Watson, Malik Heath, Bo Melton, Eric Stokes, Kenny Clark, Emanuel Wilson, Chris Brooks, or Preston Smith for a bag of potato chips.
Last year it was the Packers best corner other than Jaire - Rasul - 38.6 passer rating and 51.3% completion rate and 4 interceptions against Rasul last year in the 9 games Rasul played for the Bills and 59.4% completion rate against Rasul this year - which is even lower than Jordan's 61.3% completion percentage, which at 30th, is just 2 short of being the worst in the NFL. And Rasul doesn't miss tackles!!"
Well "Gutey" traded Preston Smith for less than a bag of potato chips in effect:
1) making a team that lacks veteran leadership worse in that regard,
2) further deflating the locker morale in midseason as Gutekunst did last year with the trade of Rasul
and
3) making an already anemic Packer pass rush worse as Preston Smith has the best sack per snap and 2nd best pressure per snap percentages of the Packers edge rushers as well as 2nd best missed tackles numbers - see table below.
Has Smith's play declined from previous years?
No, his QB pressures are up.
Sacks per snap: 2018 0.5%; 2019 1.4%; 2020 0.5%; 2021 1.3%; 2022 1.0%; 2023 1.1%, 2024 0.8%
Smith is tied for the lead in sacks with Rashan with 2.5 but Rashan has played 57 more snaps - 1 more sack this year and Smith's sack % is 1.1% the same as last year.
Pressures per snap: 2018 3.1%; 2019 3.9%; 2020 2.0%; 2021 4.1%; 2022 3.3%; 2023 3.1%, 2024 3.6%
Tackles per snap: 2018 6.4%; 2019 6.4%; 2020 5.2%; 2021 5.5%; 2022 7.2%; 2023 6.6%, 2024 6.2%
Smith has missed just one tackle according to football reference.
By comparison:
Snaps: Smith 308, Van Ness 233, Enagbare 243, Gary 365, Mosby 7
Sacks per snap: Smith 0.8%, Van Ness 0.4%, Enagbare 0.6%, Gary 0.7%, Mosby 7.1%
Smith has the best sack numbers, Van Ness the worst and Mosby's 7 snap sample size is too small to draw any conclusions.
Pressures per snap: Smith 3.6%, Van Ness 1.7%, Enagbare 2.6%, Gary 4.7%, Mosby 14.3%
Gary has the best pressure % numbers with Smith 2nd and Van Ness worst.
Tackles per snap: Smith 6.2% , Van Ness 8.6%, Enagbare 6.7%, Gary 6.6%, Mosby 28.6%
Van Ness has the most tackles per snap - maybe an indication that teams prefer to run at Van Ness rather than whomever is on the opposite side for the Packers.
Missed Tackles per tackle: Smith 5%, Van Ness 13%, Enagbare 20.8%, Gary 4.0%, Mosby 0%
Enagbare misses the most tackles followed by Van Ness.
Mosby's numbers are based on just 7 defensive snaps, a sample size too small to reach any conclusions.
Rashan Gary 12th overall pick by "Gutey" and this is the performance we are getting?
Gutey has to go.
Lukas Van Ness 13th overall pick by "Gutey" and this is the performance we are getting?
Wil McDonald - the Packers 15th pick who Gute traded to the Jets in the Rodgers trade for the Jets 13th pick - Van Ness - has 8 sacks and 23 pressures this year in just 184 snaps - Van Ness by comparison has 1 sack and 4 pressures in 233 snaps.
Gutekunst passed over McDonald - and many other superior players - for this bust van Ness.
Gutey has to go.
The Steelers are trying to win - adding tried and true veterans Preston Smith to back up Watt and Mike Williams at receiver to back up Pickens, Austin and Jefferson
The Lions are trying to win - adding Za'Darius Smith.
Chiefs too adding DeAndre Hopkins.
Jets too trading for Davante Adams and signing Reddick.
Gutekunst however is not adding star tried and true players to get the Packers over the edge, but instead continues to destroy play on the field and the team chemistry the once veteran led Packers team possessed - the once veteran team that went to the NFC Championship game in January 2015, January 2017, January 2020 and January 2021 and Divisional round game at home in January 2022 with 13-3, 13-3, and 13-4 records and was on the brink of Super Bowls as Gutekunst continued the destruction.
Last year on the legs of Aaron Jones and clutch interception of Jaire and pick 6 interception of Darnell Savage and play of other veterans we snuck into the playoffs and beat the Cowboys- as the players overcame the locker room deflating trade of Rasul:
'It was a moment I've never had,' Jones said.
'I've never had somebody that close to me get traded… We both started talking and shed a few tears. It's been a long journey for both of us.
'When you got somebody on the other side of the ball who is a mirror of you, who believes in the same things, same work ethic, you know what you're gonna get out of them. It's tough losing a brother like that.'
“I was pretty surprised, to say the least,” Alexander said, while adding, “I didn’t expect Rasul to be gone. He’s a vet. He’s made a bunch of plays throughout his time here, but that’s just the NFL.”
“We took a blow,” Valentine said. “It stung a little bit, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to keep going.”
“I think everybody in the locker room was pretty surprised,” Love said. “It’s tough. It hurts.”
“I’m gonna miss ’Sul a lot just because he always kept me locked in,” Nixon said. “If I get a little sidetracked, ’Sul’s always the one just to keep me locked in on football and now my boy not here no more, so it’s gonna be tough trying to figure it out right now.”
and the Packers players overcame a half season of NFL league leading interceptions and lowest accuracy (completion %) from the quarterback that in 2019-20 led all of college football - FCS and FBS - in interceptions - and were 17 minutes away from the NFC Championship game when Jordan Love mentally choked and played like everyone thought Jordan would when Jordan was drafted in April 2020:
Packers' Nonsensical Decision to Trade Up for Jordan Love Could Be Crippling
Brad Gagnon
Bleacher Report
April 24, 2020
Excerpt:
It strikes me as a blatant example of hubris, with Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur possibly under the foolish impression that they've outsmarted everybody else and that they saw something in Love their counterparts missed.
Gutekunst ruined the Packers' chance for several chances at a Super Bowl with the Love pick in lieu of a wide receiver.
There are no guarantees in the draft, especially with a quarterback like this. The incoming rookie has the arm and athleticism you want in a franchise quarterback, but he threw 17 interceptions last season, and his decision-making ability is a huge concern. Bleacher Report draft guru Matt Miller wrote that the 21-year-old "could end up being the best quarterback from the class or a journeyman backup."
The Packers overcame a lot of Gutekunst's destructive moves last year, but the Packers could not overcome perhaps the most boneheaded quarterback play and throw - among terrible QB play by Jordan in those final 17 minutes - that Packer fans going as far back as the 1940s had ever personally seen from a Packer starting quarterback.
Would Rasul have made a clutch play to overcome Jordan's boneheaded plays last January in the 49ers game? - Quite possibly.
Would have Rasul have inspired confidence and spirit and smart play in the younger players for the 49er game? - Quite possibly.
Would Preston Smith, Rasul Douglas and Aaron Jones be making plays for the remainder of this season to offset Jordan's boneheaded plays? Quite possibly.
Would Preston Smith, Rasul Douglas and Aaron Jones have inspired confidence and spirit and smart play in the younger players for the 49er game? - Quite possibly.
Humility and respect for veteran player leadership is a great coach's greatest asset. Lafleur has that.
Humility and respect for veteran players is also a general manager's greatest asset and Gutekunst has neither - the cancer in the locker room and at 1265 Lombardi is "Gute".
"Gute" has got to go.

Dick, when the comment is longer than the article, automatic thumbs down.
I scrolled to the bottom to cast my vote when I read your negativity towards Guey.
FYI - PSmith requested the trade.
Gutey found him a contender that would benefit his play style.
This occurred because 2 consummate professionals addressed a shared concern.
PSmith earned it. Other players will see that and hopefully conduct themselves in a professional manner as well.
Thumbs down was well earned, sorry.

Check your "Van Ess" in stats.
Also the jets play the 4-3-4.

So unless Van Ess plays a great DE.

Those stats are for this 2024 year with both the Jets and Packers playing the same 4-3 defense.
McDonald is blowing Van Ness out of the water on sacks 8 to 1- and pressures - 23 to 4 on 49 fewer snaps than Van Ness.
Gute has got to go.

The Packers have, in successive seasons, traded away a defensive starter, and people think that two data points make a pattern.
In the case of Douglas, the Packers were contacted by the Bills and were not initiators of a trade. And he brought a 3rd round pick....that's more than a bag of chips,
In the case of Smith,he has expressed his desire to be traded to a team that plays a style of defense he's familiar with .
And from those two instances, we're going to draw conclusions about the "eptness" of Gute.??? Am I reading this stuff correctly?
Packers'Dynasties6of16-5of7-next....
November 06, 2024 at 08:09 pm
I think there is certainly a lot more to draw conclusions about "eptness" of Gute beyond Gute's draining team morale out of the team in mid season with mid season trades of veteran leaders who happened to be a better corner than all Packer corners on this current team other than Jaire and this year's leading pass rusher in terms of sacks per snap.
The drafting of Love, Gary and Van Ness where they were drafted and loss of Davante and Aaron Jones over a million $$ while giving an NFL record $75 million signing bonus guarantee - now collected and banked - to a QB that was unproven and under contract would be a few more, but my no means all.
Leatherhead
November 07, 2024 at 09:30 am
He's draining the morale? By creating opportunities for guys like Enagbare to play? How did you come to this conclusion? Or is it a reality that only exists between your ears?
Love Gary, Van Ness....these are solid picks. Better than Campbell, Fullwood, and Reynolds.
Gutekunst is an A. Not a B, not a D or an F. He's done a real good job.
Packers'Dynasties6of16-5of7-next....
November 09, 2024 at 03:25 pm
Yup, Gutekunst – like a parasite - is sucking the morale out of the team. Did you listen to the players last year after Gute traded away Rasul?
Think the same was not happening with Aaron Jones and now Preston Smith?
Here are the Packers players thoughts:
Think these Gutekunst moves build trust among the players?
You really think the corners – Ballentine and Valentine - that replaced Rasul are better than Rasul?
C’mon!
With Rasul on the field the Packers may have beaten the Steelers, Giants and Tampa Bay,
for better playoff seeding and overcome Jordan’s bone headed plays against the 49ers and moved on to the NFC Championship game.
Rasul was a leader for the Packers and saved a few games – still young too and durable and never hurt.
Rasul could definitely be used on the Packer right now - he is better than any corner than Jaire and more durable.
5 interceptions in 2021, 4 interceptions in 2022, 5 interceptions in 2023 – what Packer corner is doing that?
And after Rasul left the Packers in the 9 games he played for the Bills the passer rating against him was 38.6 and 51.3%.
After Gute let Aaron Jones go?
There were few Packers willing to speak up, but some did:
“Yeah, it was very tough,” Love told reporters May 21 at the Packers OTAs. “Aaron Jones is such a special player. Special guy in this locker room since I’ve been here. Everyone loved Aaron, and it was very tough. It was one of those things that you can’t control.”
"It's a part of the business, you know what you sign up for," Jones said of the quickness of his release. "My agent had called me before all of that had happened and told me it was a possibility. My mind was already prepared and I just wanted to go somewhere I was wanted."
There was no reason to let the proven 7 year vet and loved Jones go over $1 Million dollars when paying $75 million guaranteed NFL record signing bonus to then under contract unproven QB with a half season terrible and a half season good.
Preston wanted to leave because of Gutekunst’s moves and the way he has treated Preston’s friends in the locker room. Of course Preston is not going to say that if Preston wants to continue to get jobs in the NFL.
Of course Gute is sucking the morale out of the team every time he removes a productive veteran that is both a locker room and on field role model and leader for younger players and long time comrade of the other veteran warriors. Preston’s per snap, pressure and sack numbers are consistent with Preston’s historical numbers – there has been no significant fall off.
Enagbare, Gary, and Van Ness have shown quite well who they are with plenty of snaps- their pressures per snap and sacks per snap this year are mostly lower than Preston Smith sacks and pressures per snap - Smith at 0.8% sacks per snap, Gary at 0.7% sacks per snap and Enagbare at 0.6% sacks per snap and of course Van Ness at 0.4% sacks per snap – in other words every 233 snaps, Van Ness gets a sack and the Gary and Enagbare are not much better.
For pressures Smith is at 3.6% pressures per snap, Gary 4.7% pressures per snap, Enagbare 2.5 % pressures per snap and Van Ness 1.7 % pressures per snap – in other words Van Ness is getting a pressure once every 58 snaps!
There is no star there among Gary, Enagbare and Van Ness that is going to jump out and suddenly start getting pressures and sacks
.
With no trade of Rasul last year the Packers probably overcome Jordan’s bonehead play and beat the 49ers.
With Rasul, Aaron Jones and Preston this year, the Packers also probably overcome Jordan’s bonehead play.
As for Rich Campbell, Brent Fullwood, and Jamal Reynolds that is a pretty low bar. Of those 3 Fullwood at least showed some potential on the field – more than Van Ness and not that much less than Gary. Too bad he just did not want to play football. 1 Pro Bowl for Fullwood and that is 1 more Pro Bowl than Van Ness, Gary or Love will ever see.
Rich Campbell was a good and accurate QB at Cal but I couldn’t understand why Bart drafted him 6th overall in 1981 and he was the 1st of 16 quarterbacks drafted that year, only Neil Lomax and Wade Wilson are memorable.
With Lynn Dickey the starter and David Whitehurst the backup – didn’t make sense to me.
Unlike today however – except for in Green Bay- quarterbacks often sat the bench for years before starting so I suppose Campbell was being groomed to succeed Dickey but Dickey was not that old and neither was Whitehurst who I thought was a decent QB.
Campbell had size – 6 foot 4 – and a decent arm. In today’s NFL with all the protection for the quarterback and the few times you can touch receivers during a play, Campbell might have been a decent QB.. When Forrest Gregg took over in 1984 Campbell asked for his release at the end of the year – after leading the Packers to a win over the Bears – something we have taken for granted with Aaron Rodgers and may not continue with Jordan Love, starting a week from now. Campbell just gave up after that as I remember.
Jamal Reynolds probably the worst of the 3 draft picks – forget it – on a par so far with Van Ness. Hasselbeck and 17th pick we gave up were worth a lot more.
Gutekunst gets an “F” as a General Manager and an “F minus” as a human being. I can accept poor drafts more than disrespect of veteran players.

I'm not overly concerned on Gutey making this move. Certainly works better for Smith, since he's more comfortable in the 3-4 D than what we're playing now. Good for him, he was a model citizen and vet leader for the club. It's also good for the Packers in the long term. We will just have to see who steps up in replacing Smith's snaps....that could backfire but that's the risk in all of this.
With that, the names being presented are Mosby and Cox.....but Hafley may have plans to creatively use more pieces in various ways. Just spit balling here but I won't be surprised if they use Walker in other roles depending on the situation. Coop needs way more PT and Wilson has been reliable, even better, than Walker at times. Also, don't forget about recently signed Jamin Davis, LB. Much like Smith, he was not a good fit with Washington but he's a solid player who can perform at a high level....
