Episode 502

We kick off the show discussing the lack of interest cornerback Tramon Williams is getting on the free-agent market and what implications that could have for the Packers. That transitions into an interview with Eric Galko of OptimumScouting.com, who helps us look at a couple cornerback prospects that might interest the Packers in the NFL Draft. Brian, I agree with you about how it is overstated how much the players conceded. They conceded the rookie wage scale and I think a lot of people knock the CBA agreement for that from the player's perspective, but really that takes money away from unproven rookies and gives it to proven veterans. That's bad for rookies, but good for veterans. It's also good for the NFL's competitiveness, which also helps the players when the NFL generates revenue from that competitiveness.

I also think people really underrate the salary cap floor. This is a big deal. Teams were not spending millions and millions each year and that money came out of the pockets of the players directly. They achieved two things that work really well together: Cap Rollover and a Cap Floor. All unspent cap space rolls over to the next year, and then teams have to try to get over that 90% salary cap floor. This completely stops teams from wasting that money, because at one point or another, they have to at least get up to 90%, and that unused space will just keep rolling over so it never disappears. This could be the biggest win for the players since the invention of free agency. Oh, and how can we have this conversation without noting that the NFL successfully blocked the 18-game season for now, and they blocked HGH testing for the players, which is good for players so they don't get suspended.

As much as it was stated that Smith and Goodell weren't getting along, in the end I think Goodell got some things for the owners that helps the entire NFL and Smith got some things for the players that help the entire NFL, and that is exactly what the NFL should want out of a CBA. The players would be crazy to get rid of Smith, especially after they have been winning court case after court case. It's the NFL that needs to seriously re-think Goodell as he has had failure after failure in court, his decisions and investigations directly negatively impacted the reputation of the NFL, and he doesn't have many major accomplishments IMO.

Brian - I agree it would be amazing and wonderful for Waynes or Shelton to fall to #30 - not gonna happen though. Both will be gone by #15. Malcolm Brown could be available with some luck or a small trade up though. I think he would be the best defensive player the Packers could potentially draft this year.
