Ready When Called: Malik Willis is a Luxury to Have

Having a starting quarterback go down during a game is a problem not many teams can overcome. Proven to the beat of this season, of the 8 teams currently sitting in last place in the NFL 7 of them have lost their starting quarterback to injury at some point this season. In week 11, the Packers were similarly faced with the daunting challenge of losing quarterback Jordan Love. Trailing 7-0 in the 1st quarter at MetLife Stadium vs a desperate New York Giants football team. Like last year, Green Bay backup quarterback Malik Willis would be up for the challenge.

Willis would only take part in 1 drive but would revitalize Green Bay’s offense in doing so. Completing two of two passes, one a more than impressive on the run throw to Christian Watson for a touchdown to get Green Bay on the board. Willis indisputably adds an element to Green Bay’s offense in the use of his mobility. A more than needed added arsenal to an at times stagnant Matt LaFleur offense as of late.

Unsure of what Love’s injury was or how long he would be out of the game, Green Bay would convert what at the time was a huge play during the TD drive, in a 3rd and 8 rush by Willis. Utilizing a run-pass option, Willis, a once reported 4.37 40-yard dash runner would outrun the Giants defense and keep the drive going on a day where field goals would be few and far between due to wind. To have a next man up at such a key position, and not have the drop off be significant, can certainly take a toll on any opposition.

Not only the teams at the bottom of divisions, but many highly anticipated top teams have also seen their seasons thrown off due to injury and must claw back for a bid to the playoffs. From the 3-7 Bengals losing Joe Burrow, 5-5 Ravens without Lamar Jackson, to the 3-8 Commanders continually missing Jayden Daniels. The luxury in having a more than capable replacement for the leader of the huddle is rare, and the Packers have continually been proven to have that and more in Malik Willis.

Coming off a year where Willis would lead Green Bay to a 2-0 record during Jordan Love’s early season knee injury. Willis finished with a Rating above 120 in each game, a passing touchdown, while also rushing for 40 or more yards. Commanding the huddle, Willis’s ability to get off his initials reads and find open space is a trait you see increasingly utilized in today’s NFL landscape.

In a year where Green Bay has seen their offensive line cave in, and a passing game run into serious issue through injury and lacking in rhythm. Perhaps seeing your back-up quarterback come in unfazed and lead a touchdown drive can provide an impact beyond just the scoreboard. Malik Willis once again provided a necessary spark, and reminder why Green Bay not giving up an asset like Willis for draft picks, pays dividends in a league where things can change at any given moment.

Despite being a top 3 converting team on 3rd downs this year in the NFL, Green Bay in short yardage situations has seemed to run into repetitive, and non-creative plays such as an inside zone rushing attempt out of the shotgun. Losing Tucker Kraft’s ability to do his own version of a QB sneak, Green Bay may have another element to this down and distance in Willis. Keeping Love away from the mess of a sneak, why not trot Willis on for some sort of tush-push, RPO, or anything Matt LaFleur’s extensive playbook can produce.

Only 26 years-old and an unrestricted free agent following this season, it will be interesting to see what Green Bay does with Willis. You would expect him to garner serious interest in a league that faces inevitable injury, and misfortunes to arguably the most important position in football. If one thing is for certain, it is that as long as Malik Willis is a Green Bay Packer, the panic button can refrain from being hit, and belief can remain.

The offense has responded well to Willis every time he's come in. And he would have been perfect in his significant outings except for that ugly loss to the Bears where the defense blew it on the final drive.

I honestly get excited every time I see him on the field. When the offense is stagnating like it has sometimes, there's nothing to lose by using him creatively, or at least threatening to. As much as Love is the franchise QB, it's not like your taking the ball out of Tom Brady's or Patrick Mahomes' hands. So don't let a useful resource sit on the pine when you're having trouble scoring points (hello Eagles game).

If we lose Willis, and we probably will, we had better find a capable backup--or pray that Clayton Tune has made the most of his practice squad time and can fill in competently if needed.

That Malik Willis can come in cold and completely unexpected and drive for a TD says a great deal about him. He got a small window of opportunity to show what he has last year and this year and has absolutely run with it.

Given how many poor QBs there are around the NFL, I'm pretty sure he gets a call-up to be a starter in 2026 somewhere - or at the very least a contract where a team promises him a chance at starter.

Willis has the temperament required. That’s become clear. We are lucky to have him. A team can win with him in this league. How often remains a question, but that much is proven.

At this point, I'd be willing to give Willis the start. Love has not lived up to the hype or expectations this year. It's also clear that Lefluer has lost trust in him.

There are too many ex-NFL QB's who break down every snap of QB play for anyone to be this ignorant by chance.

Please, go watch Kurt Benkert, JT O'Sullivan, or Kurt Warner break down numerous complete games from Jordan Love, before deciding to come here and spew your ignorance about the level of QB play Jordan Love does or doesn't exhibit.

You think that was mean?
You have some really thin skin.

Literally, go watch professional NFL QB's break down every snap of Love's season. By and large, they really, really like what they see.

NitschkeFTG, What alternate universe are you living in? In this one: "...statistically the 27-year-old quarterback is off to the best start of his NFL career. Love ranks in the top 10 in passer rating (103.2), completion percentage (67.7%), yards per pass (7.81), interceptions (three), and 25-plus-yard completions (22)." (From the team website this week).

Yes, I wish he had played over our gimpy QB for quite a bit of last season.....I also wish our new found kicker kicked a couple weeks so our signed 3 year kicker could heal and win a few more games while at it....But, that would have been sensible.

I am not suggesting that the Packers go with a hybrid Love-Willis offense. But with Willis's abilities, experience and makeup - he should have seen the field more than he has. Not just as a backup but in short yardage, wildcat and change of pace situations. It's not like the Offense couldn't have used another playmaker this season.

LaFleur is nothing if not creative. I don't know why he hasn't drawn up play or two with Willis and Love on the field. I could see some crazy RPO motion by Willis taking or faking getting the ball from Love with Love faking or giving the ball to Jacobs and the QB rolling out with or without the ball.

You could run several plays within the same formation...you know kind of an "illusion of complexity". (I didn't come up with that phrase...someone else did)

Agreed! At least see if it works during the regular season, it’s been proven to in his limited action.

Malik is by all accounts a very capable backup, but his chances of getting a starter position anywhere is slim. His skill set can catch teams off-guard, but he won't for full games all season long. When he leaves GB, he'll just end up a backup elsewhere, He'll be in competition and lose out to become a Brissett, Tyrod, Hundley etc. There are too many QBs on teams that aren't moving off who they have and a fresh group coming this draft. He is what he is, a good backup and his future rests on where he goes, or stays.

I will be curious to see what kind of attention Willis gets as a FA. I don't know that he's a bona fide NFL starter, but I'll bet he gets a low-money deal with limited guarantees from some team who maybe drafts a QB early that is desperate to try to unearth a quick solution. There's been some discussion on what it would cost to keep him, but my guess is that he's going to want a chance to play again, and Love's firmly in place.

I don't have a problem with Willis getting some snaps. Remember that they tried this in the playoff game with Philly last year and it didn't pay. In that case, they split out Love and didn't replace him with a skill position guy or a blocker, which doesn't help. Once the Packers try this during the flow of a game and put it on film, opponents will prep for it and the real vaue--unprepared looks--goes way down.

I'll remind people that when a QB plays the "wildcat"...he's a QB so it's not a wildcat. Sorry. Pet peeve.

Love and Willis on the field at the same time is a great way to ensure one of the two have an injury coming their way real quick. Defenses actively punish QBs who are not protected players on the field.

I would be shocked if there wasn't a team that will substantially over-pay for Willis to be their starter. By the end of the season it won't look like a good decision. That's been my outlook for over a year, we'll see how it shakes out.
