Report: Former Packers DC turns down job with Bengals

-- Dom Capers won't join the Cincinnati Bengals' coaching staff like initially thought.

According to Alex Marvez of SiriusXM, the former Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator turned down an offer to join the team on Wednesday. It came down to Capers and prying away Dennis Allen from the New Orleans Saints.

Capers spent nine seasons in Green Bay and coached one of the league's top defenses during the first couple years of his tenure. However, the latter stretch saw his unit struggle, leaving the Packers to rank in the bottom-third of the league in various defensive categories.

The Packers parted ways with Capers last year after the 2017 season concluded and he spent the entirety of 2018 unemployed. They hired Mike Pettine as his successor, now preparing to coach for a second season with the Packers.

There was some belief that, after hiring new head coach Matt LaFleur, the team would opt to go in a new direction at defensive coordinator. Pettine was one of the few members of Mike McCarthy's final coaching staff to be retained under the new regime.

Capers, 68, is one of the most experienced coaches on the market despite how his time with the Packers concluded. He first ventured onto the coaching scene in 1972 as a graduate assistant at Kent State. He stepped into the NFL circuit in 1986 with the New Orleans Saints and never looked back; he's been a coach at the professional level ever since.

The Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars are also interested in Capers for a senior defensive advisor position on their respective staffs.

It only takes a year for the memory to fade and they all go back for more. I wish him luck, but at 68 you wonder if he has any innovation left in him.

Wade Phillips turned 71 and coached the best defense in the NFL.

Maybe he decided that playing golf in the morning and sipping margaritas by the pool in the afternoon beats putting in 18hour days in Cincinnati.

Pretty weird that he wouldn't want to work under *Goff's QB coach*. I mean so clearly that guy (I'm not going to even bother learning his name) is a rising star.

Those other teams can have him. Just keep him away from the Packers. Thanks, Since '61

Capers just may have decided at his age to enjoy his hard earned money and play with his grandkids instead of working in the NFL. Can't blame him if he chooses to stay out of football.

I wouldn't want to hold a tacking dummy any longer either. A lot of interviews are pick your mind sessions. Can anyone imagine Dom would get another Coordinator job after the abysmal performance in Green Bay? Sure it wasn't all Dom. Ted left him with crap, look at Rollins and Randall. I'm sure he can still teach but it seems his scheme no longer is effective.

His history shows he has had success but has trouble maintaining it. As a D-coordinator in Pittsburg, head coach in Carolina, a head coach in Houston and D-coordinator in Green bay.
