Report: Packers and OT Bryan Bulaga Agree on Five-Year Deal

Bulaga will reportedly receive a deal averaging just south of $7 million per season in Green Bay.

Negotiations went right down to the deadline, but the Green Bay Packers and offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga reportedly agreed to a five-year deal, keeping him off the open market.

The news was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network:

The Packers had been hesitant to approach the $7 million mark for Bulaga, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, but as arguably the top free agent offensive tackle, it would appear the Packers had to pony up more than they originally anticipated.

By locking up Bulaga and wide receiver Randall Cobb, the Packers have secured what seemed to be their top two offseason priorities.

A contract has not been finalized and did not appear on Tuesday's NFL transaction report.

If reported figures are accurate, Bulaga looks to become perhaps the third-highest paid right tackle (in terms of average salary) in the NFL behind only Gosder Cherilus of the Indianapolis Colts and King Dunlap on the San Diego Chargers.

The Packers already have the highest-paid quarterback (Aaron Rodgers), linebacker (Clay Matthews) and slot receiver (Randall Cobb) in the league.

What signing Bulaga does is keep the Packers starting offensive line, and in essence, their entire offense intact through at least the 2016 season.

Head coach Mike McCarthy has consistently said the 2014 edition of the Packers offensive line has been the best he's coached in Green Bay, and now they'll continue to work together for at least two more seasons, assuming they're healthy.

"History will tell you if you have five guys who line up andplay together week-in and week-out, you’re going to have a pretty good offensive line," said McCarthy at the NFL Combine. "This line is the best line I’ve coached in my time in Green Bay clearly both all the way through. What we ask of them as far as their responsibility is more than we’ve ever done. The continuity they’ve created has been awesome. The production is definitely the best we’ve had. This has definitely been our best group."

Not only the offensive line, but the Packers quarterback, running back, top five wide receivers and tight end (assuming Richard Rodgers) are all under contract through at least 2016.

As someone that had his season ended on injured reserve in each of the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Bulaga got a lot of security in a five-year deal.

Bulaga's 2014 season didn't start out well, injuring his knee in the season opener and missing the Week 2 game, but he rebounded to start the remaining 14 games of the regular season and the playoffs, arguably having the best season of his career.

This is awesome, and if reported numbers are correct then a great deal for both Bulaga and the Packers. It's clear that contracts now are higher than in the past since salary cap keeps going up. But they got both Bulaga and Cobb for less money than anticipated, which is great! Now CB and ILB are top priorities, which I think one has to be filled in FA.
But keeping the OL together makes me very happy. Gotta open a beer or two :)

In every year that the cap goes up, salaries are going to increase as well. Bulaga's contract works for us this year. Last year's Jordy contract would be a great deal for the team this year. I'm sure Cobb's contract won't look so big in a year or two. As long as we have Ted Thompson as GM, our cap will be in very good shape.

McCarthy is absolutely right about it being the best o-line of his tenure. They were outstanding. I'm glad the entire group has been retained.

Its great to keep the line intact, the DB on the other hand looks like were losing House and Williams. I guess another draft and plug and play this could be the weak link this year.

BOTH Cobb and Bulaga? I'll take it.
The D needs attention, but we had the top scoring team last year and EVERYBODY is back.

It's nearly about time to think about extending Bahktiari as well before he costs too much

I don't think they're even allowed to until next off-season.

The Press-Gazette has the contract details. I like the breakdown. It looks like a deal that included Bulaga's health history. it's not a big upfront commitment but it looks like something you could swallow for the duration if Bulaga plays like him did in 2014. Per-game bonus money starts at 500k and goes up to 700k.
