Rodgers and LaFleur Express Confidence in Packers Receiving Corps

Despite skepticism from the critics, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and head coach Matt LaFleur expressed confidence in their receiving corps heading into training camp.

The Green Bay Packers did not add a wide receiver in the 2020 NFL Draft, but that hasn’t stopped both Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur from expressing optimism about the team’s offense for the coming season.

During conference calls with the media on Friday, both quarterback and head coach said they were eagerly anticipating working with the group they had and they were confident the offense would do well.

“I love our team. I like our chances, I like our squad,” Rodgers said. “I like the leadership of the football team and I also like that there probably won’t be sky high expectations for us like last year but I really think we’ll be in the mix.”

Rodgers also reminded reporters how much he liked his receiving corps. “I love this group and obviously the front office does as well,” Rodgers said. “It all starts with Davante [Adams] and his abilities. He’s such a dynamic player. When you have a dynamic guy like that, it opens up the field for the rest of the guys.”

While Adams is the leader, Rodgers was also excited about his other targets. “If you look at the development of a guy like Allen Lazard, what he did last year. He was cut in training camp and quickly put back on the roster in week 1. By the end of the season, he was called on many times in important situations to make big plays and he did. He’s an ascending player, I loved his approach every week and he made some big time plays for us.”

“I’m excited about getting EQ [Equanimeous St. Brown] back from injury and seeing how he feels. He really made some great strides his rookie year, especially towards the end of the season, making plays for us and just kind of growing each week. He’s got a great approach to the game and it will be fun to see him healthy.”

While many others were down on Marquez Valdes-Scantling by the end of the season, Rodgers remains high on the young speedster out of NC State. “MVS is a guy I have a ton of confidence in,” Rodgers said. “I really feel like if he can continue to grow, he can add to our football team and I look for him to continue to make big strides.”

Rodgers was also impressed with Devon Funchess in his early conversations with the team’s free agent addition. “We’ve added Devon to the mix it will be fun to see where he’s at physically.  He has a high football IQ. We’ve had some really good conversations him and I. Devin who is a veteran guy whose made plays in the league for a number of years and is hungry.”

One player that has impressed LaFleur during the virtual, offseason program is Canadian import Reggie Begelton. “The one thing that really stands out, you can tell he is super invested,” LaFleur explained. “He’s done a great job of picking up everything we’ve thrown at him. We’ve been quizzing these guys quite a bit and he’s routinely at the top. I’ve been super impressed with his approach and just excited to see him and what he’s got to offer on the field.”

Obviously, LaFleur won’t get that opportunity until the Packers are able to hold training camp. The NFL remains optimistic that they will be able to start on time but a lot will depend on where the country is regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rodgers was also pleased with his returning tight ends. “I was really excited to see ‘Big Dog’ [Marcedes Lewis] come back,” the quarterback said. “He not only adds a great presence to our run blocking scheme but to our locker room, he’s just a consummate professional, a fantastic leader for our football team and bringing him back was an important part to sure up that room.”

“We saw with Jace [Sternberger], he’s going to be getting some opportunities and we’re going to be expecting things from him and Bobby Tonyan as well and we drafted a young kid in the third round as well. I like the way that’s looking.”

Overall, both Rodgers and LaFleur expect more of the offense in year two. “We’re blending some of the stuff Matt loves to do with a few of the things that I have done well over the years,” Rodgers said. “This has been a great opportunity to go back and really fine tune everything about last year, what was good, what didn’t work, what we want to add to it, what we want to take out. I think Matt and [offensive coordinator] Nathaniel [Hackett] have done a really good job of going through those and keeping me in the loop about conversations about these installs and I feel really good about where we’re at.”

While the virtual offseason has created challenges for everybody, Rodgers remains optimistic that the Packers will be just fine. “Obviously, this is a different off season. Many of us haven’t gone through an offseason when we haven’t been able to get together. We managed it in 2011. I think with these Zoom meetings. I think we’ll be ready to go whenever that time comes.”

Rogers and MLF don't get along. Rogers was disappointed with the draft and no new weapons. Maybe, but it sure didn't sound like it. Sounds like more media created controversy. I'm excited Rogers is excited and thinks our WR's and TE's will be fine.

Maybe MLF's plan is to put the NFL to sleep on our WR's and TE's with an "illusion" of mediocrity.

The media certainly hypes its stories. I don't doubt that Rodgers was not thrilled with the pick. Looking forward to 2020 and seeing what this group can do. Thanks for the comment, gkarl. Always good to hear from you.

Great read, Gil.

Man, I've been pretty excited about this offense, both before and after the draft, and hearing LaFleur call out Reggie Begelton for being on top of everything they've thrown his way is music to my ears. I believe this player is really going to shine in Green Bay, with Aaron Rodgers throwing to him. He's got a great knack for getting open in the middle of the field. Pure slot player who pretty much OWNS the middle. Great hands, runs solid routes, and shows phenomenal toughness in making difficult catches and/or in gaining yards after the catch. He definitely has those "QB's Best Friend" qualities we all as fans were hoping to add. Doesn't hurt being a bit older, more mature, having given up football entirely then having come back to the game for the pure love of the game, as well as being a former CFL All-Star. The game is not too big for Reggie Begelton.

He, along with a motivated, experienced Devin Funchess make for a couple of dynamic playmakers added to both Davante Adams and Alan Lazard. With Lazard having shown not only a high level of reliability, but a close working relationship with Aaron Rodgers, I think this group may surprise many with how good they are. If both MVS and EQ can get off the Schneid and show themselves to be improved, we're in business. Not to mention a greatly changed TE group with a ton of talent.

Their confidence in these players makes me feel a lot better moving forward. We'll see, but I find this encouraging. Very much so.

...already started.

Funny, but Reggie Begelton is not just a CFL player - he's an All-Star. There's a difference, and I believe it will make his transition much easier to the NFL level of play. Of course there are no guarantees, and there is a different level of play in the NFL. No question. However, looking at his highlights you can see he is proficient in an area where we need it most, the SLOT. He's got all the tools, and the toughness to be a real factor for the Packers in moving the chains and scoring.

I like his addition to this team, and I do think he may have a greater impact than a younger, newly drafted rookie. LaFleur calling him out was big. We'll see, but I dig where this is going at WR for the Packers.

Begelton is an "ascending player," having increased his production significantly during his 3 years of CFL play. 22, 25 and 102 receptions in 33, 39 and 144 ATT; 304, 488 and 1444 yds; 1, 1 and 10 TDs; YAC 154, 164 and 519 respectively. His 2nd season was cut short after only 7 games due to a broken arm. He came back from that to post some huge numbers in 2019. He averages 15.0 Y/R. Begelton's Catch % in 2019 was 70.8% and his Y/Tgt was 10.0. Those are super solid #s.

The Packers had been scouting Begelton since his Pro Day in 2015 in Beaumont, TX, where he ran a 4.53 40 time and had a 39.5 vertical, at 6-2 200.

Looking at all of that, along with his highlights, there is one hell of a lot of promise with this player for a good career in the NFL. Begelton exhibits just about everything you would look for in a reliable slot WR candidate. Toughness. Great routes. Great hands. Great YAC, and the experience/stats to back it up. Did I wand us to add a 4.3-4.4 level of speed at WR? Yeah, but that can be deceiving. Games speed, precision, power and toughness, to me, are more important than 40 times in shorts.

I can see where Gutekunst/LaFleur might have felt comfortable on draft day knowing they had both Begelton and Funchess already added into their WR group with Adams, Lazard, MVS, Kumerow and EQ.

That would be exciting but I would be shocked if Begelton made this team. At 26 years old, he essentially needs to be a finished product now and beat out several players.

As a CFL fan, we certainly picked up a gem in Reggie. I think he has all the talent to succeed. My concern is whether this offseason will limit his ability to develop a rapport with Rodgers and enough practice time to make the transition to the NFL game. I agree Begelton could be the perfect security blanket in the slot that Rodgers needs to move the chains so he is not always throwing to double-teamed Davante when we need that first down.

He would need to beat out atleast 2 of Kumerow, MVS, EQ and the UDFA from Michigan State. He is 26. You cannot be a developmental player at 26. I would be floored if he made the team.....

All the gloom and doom comes from a single starting point.

PFT and that vi-queen hack florio.

He is the lowest sort of media slug with a purple streak a mile wide and a healthy hatred for all things green and gold.

He has never had a positive thing to write or say about the GBP or any of the players.

He starts out like he is presenting a news story but he rapidly descends into rumor mongering and hate-driven drivel.

Just say NO to PFT. As a GBP fan for over 55 years, PFT and florio are at the bottom of my list of reputable sources for true information.

I still don't understand what their long term plan is at WR. They could have great players, and they could have a team full of busts aside from Tae. They said in the draft they didn't see anyone who could "make an immediate impact" but the entire theme of the draft was drafting for the future. I don't know, I just don't get it.

Adams contract expires in two years. Same with MSV and ESB. Rodgers has an out in two years.

I would think next off season WR is more of a priority . We have our QB, RB, and TE for the next four years.

Rodgers does not "have an out". There is no player option in his contract. Sportrac only puts "potential out" in to recognize a point when dead money vs. cap hit reaches a particular level.

Exactly, dobber. After two two years, the Packers won't take too much of a cap hit to trade him and it would be better after three years. But that's getting way ahead of things and a trade may never happen. Thanks for commenting.

Thank you for that correction. It doesn’t really change the situation. In two years, Adams is a FA, as is MSV and ESB. If we haven’t reached the Super Bowl in the next two years or made a horrible mistake with Love, we’re going to be rebuilding the WR core then. We might start the process next year by drafting Adams replacement.

Tunsil got $22M AAV. You're suggesting a mid-sized price: he's going to need a Brinks truck.

He needs to return to elite status in 2020 to get the enormous money. GB knows better what's up with his back. But for that, I'd bet on re-signing. Given his back, I'd bet on the franchise tag.

One way to look at it is whether one thinks Bakh at $22M AAV is worth Jack Conklin ($15M) and (hmmm) Kirksey.

Rodgers is tradeable after two years, so it's more like the Packers have an out at that point. They are better off waiting 3 years but that's a different issue. We shall see what the team does about WR after this year. We will know a lot more about the current group and how well they fit into the offense, that's for certain. Thanks for the comment, Leatherhead.

They are better off waiting three years if Love isn’t ready to win. I think, for a multitude of reasons, the two year scenario makes more sense if we don’t win the Super Bowl this year.

Two years from right now, the GM will be in the last year of his contract. He could have a good young backfield plus the trade value of Rodgers plus a lot of cap space....and that would strengthen his position for a new contract.

Of course, if we win the Super Bowl this year, it’s all moot.

I don't understand what the long-term plan is at WR or DL; even if these positions supposedly can't make a meaningful impact in their first year, what about the years after that?

And what if Adams or Clark get injured? I know the Packers won four games without Adams, but that was last year--and keep in mind that Adams has already taken a couple of nasty helmet-to-helmets already in his career, and another one...would not be good. Clark already played a ton of snaps last season; if he goes down, who exactly is going to fill THAT void?

I really hate going full homer, but I feel Funchess and EQ will help greatly. I was in the "Get rid of Adams" fan club after his second year, which taught me that WRs really need those 3 years to develop and show what they can do.

I see TE as the big receiving weakness with more hope than what is known, outside of Lewis.

I feel this group can be much more effective than last year, but a big part of that is Rodgers not trying to constantly hit the big play.

You are right. I believe Adams was beat up playing hurt and he doesn't have elite speed but elite footwork, which doesn't go well when your wheels aren't working well. Also some focus drops, etc. What a great change has taken place with that guy. Nothing but good things to say about him now. He always gets separation.

I agree about the wrs. Im more shocked they didnt get a big run stuffer in the mid rounds. I think this wr group with sternberger and aaron jone]s also contributing in the pass game will surprise alot of people. But after that san fran game and the eagles and chargers games, im shocked that all they really did is swap out martinez for kirksey. Maybe treyvon hester will hold his gap and hopefully dean Lowry brings his Agame more consistently. I just dont see the 3 4 working without another anchor in there. But maybe, just maybe martinez was worse than i thought he was and kirksey comes in n does his job and this d is much improved. We have a bj raji, but wheres ryan pickett? Or even howard green?

My opinion is that with the greater emphasis on the run game, they will go with 5 WRs. My guess would be Adams, Lazard, Funchess, Begelton and EQ. With all the newly drafted WRs there will be plenty of others to choose from if they need something specific to help the roster. MVS and maybe Kummerow will be on the practice squad.

The spot saved will be used on one of: 1)Boyle 2)Looney 3)extra defense guy depending on injuries in preseason.

The number of WRs will likely be determined by special teams contributions. Last year, Kumerow and Lazard played a lot of ST snaps. It could be that Lazard plays fewer if he's viewed as a 'starter' at WR. If he's passed by Funchess, he probably keeps those snaps. Neither ESB in 2018 nor MVS in either of his seasons was a core ST contributor.

I generally agree with you that the WR lineup will start with Adams, Lazard, Funchess, Begelton and EQ. However, I think there's an excellent chance that they'll keep Kummerow as the 6th receiver. The number one requirement for a good receiver is that he can catch and hang onto the football. Adams, Lazard, and Kummerow have proven themselves in that respect. MVS sucks at it, so unless he really surprises everyone in the preseason he's gone. I'm quite hopeful about Funchess, Begelton and EQ, and expect them to earn their roster spots. Aaron will have a decent selection of targets, so that the passing game won't suffer. (I think that MVS is still eligible for the practice squad as one of their veteran players, so there's a chance he could end up there. But at this point he's not good enough to waste a regular roster spot on.)

If they use a lot of multiple TE formations, they may go with just five WRs. We shall see. I don't think Kumerow is eligible for the practice squad anymore after being on the active roster for two years, but I'll try to double check. Will be an interesting training camp. Thanks for commenting.

First, you'll be able to knock me over with a feather, anytime a coach or QB does not profess their deep love and unbridled confidence for players whom they have to work with. To do otherwise would just be a form of professional self-destruction. So on to more interesting parts...What I like to offer is a scouting report on Reggie Begelton - whom I fully expect will make the Packers. Living in Calgary and having watched Begelton, first-hand, for 2 years - I can report that he is a smart (see LaFleur's comments), strong, tough, physical receiver who knows how to read defenses and get open. He also has superb hands and is equally adept as both a slot and outside receiver. While he's not a burner, he's not slow, and is a good YAC runner. I would not be surprised if Reggie and Aaron did not develop some early chemistry during training camp. Perhaps this provides some hope - faith and love to follow upon training camp.

I concur. I've watched a lot if film of Begelton.
Reggie reminds me of former Giant Pro Bowler Victor Cruz, a WR who was undrafted but blossomed into a stud.
If he gets a fair shot from 12, he can make a name for himself.

Love the Victor Cruz comparison, it should only be accurate. If he is smart and runs consistent routes, I get the feeling 12 will take to him pretty quickly. Thanks for commenting.

The big question for me about Begelton is making the transition from the CFL to the NFL. Being up in Alberta, can you share your thoughts about making those adjustments and how he'll do?

My first thought is that Reggie initially trained and played in the U.S. - so he is very familiar with 11-side football and a smaller field. So I don't think the transition back to the U.S. game will be a huge adjustment for him. Also he's a mature player, playing in his prime years - so he's arriving in Green Bay at the peak of his confidence and abilities. However, perhaps his primary asset is his intelligence. The Dude just knows how to read defenses and find the open spots. And even when he's tightly covered, if you throw the ball anywhere near him, he usually catches it. One last point about Reggie - he had a terrific connection with his quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell, whom in my opinion has been the best QB in the CFL for the last 5 years. As an aside, I think Mitchell is comparable in abilities to Jeff Garcia, who co-incidentally was also a Calgary Stampeder and a pretty good NFL quarterback. But my main point is that Reggie has proven that he can connect with a high-level and smart quarterback - which can only improve his chances with the Packers.

I get the feeling the coaching staff and Rodgers will appreciate that kind of receiver. I get the feeling he will make this team or at least the practice squad. Looking forward to seeing him in camp. Thanks for answering the question.

I also feel the offense will be better this season. Last year was about learning new concept and there were spurts where they clicked. I just think Sternberger will be upgrade over Graham, Dillon addition should improve the run game. I was hoping like most this team would draft WR early, but we will see. I still hope they look to bring in another WR vet....Stills, Gabriel, etc.

Bringing in a low cost vet like Gabriel is still a possibility. If he's unhappy with what he has, Gute will almost certainly add someone during the course of the season like he did at numerous positions last year. Thanks for the comment.

Year two of a new offensive scheme should be theoretically understood and executed better. It takes 11 people at once to make it happen. I really hope the Packers find their rhythm early and often. Each group has players that the team needs to master their role. I think, if anything that continuity will play a large part in this seasons failures or success. LaFleur and staff needs to get these guys in sync. I have no doubts that the Packers can achieve better cohesiveness than last year. As always, loved the article. Go Pack Go!!

Thanks for the comment, Brandip, I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I also think the team should improve in year two of the LaFleur offense. We'll see how much improvement there is. We went 13-3 last year in a new offense. Even a moderate step forward would be a big help.

I dont understand how so many people have soured on MVS so quickly. Reminds me of what Qoojo said, how down everybody was on Adams after his 2nd yr. MVS put up almost 600 yrds in his 1st season and regressed a bit to 450 in his 2nd year. More yards and same number of TDs on 24 less catches than Adams their first 2 seasons.

Both guys suffered ankle injuries their 2nd yr that impacted their explosion and production. Ironically MVS had his best game against the Raiders after getting hurt against the Lions. 2 catches 133 yrds.1 TD. Then his production fell off a cliff.

I dont want to make excuses for the guy but is there any chance that the lack of connection between Rodgers and MVS is because of the speed factor? Look at the speed of all the WRs he has had to throw to now and throughout his career. MVS might be the fastest of all of them.

Is it unreasonable to think that Rodgers just doesnt quite have his speed dialed in yet. I believe Rodgers even talked about that during last years training camp on his lack of connection with MVS in practice.

Anyway, hopefully year 3 is the charm and these guys make fireworks together this season. That speed is sorely needed in this offense, no way hes going anywhere unless he totally bombs.

I agree with you on MVS. He was hurt last year and a lot of people forget that. He was off to a pretty good start the first four games but then wasn't effective after that and was barely in the lineup late in the season. Both LaFleur and Rodgers have gone out of their way to praise MVS this offseason and Rodgers himself admitted he still has to adjust to the speed MVS possesses as you said. This is a make or break year for him but we'll see what he brings. Thanks for the comment, NoNonesense.

I think part of the reason why ARod is slow to connect with new receivers, especially younger ones, is that they don't know how to adjust to what #12 is doing when protection breaks down or when he extends the play by breaking the pocket or hanging on a little bit longer. Cobb, Adams, Nelson...those guys had a way of adjusting play-side and looking for openings, working their way back to the QB, or just making themselves available.

NoNonsense, that is just a great take on MVS.

So many fans, myself included, have been really quick to write players off, and Davante Adams is a prime example. MVS - IS- the speed guy we all wanted, but he's already been on the roster for two years, developing in the system.

MVS and Aaron Rodgers will connect big time in this upcoming season and beyond if MVS can focus on completing plays...

Davante struggled in his first two years while Jordy Nelson struggled in his first 3 seasons before becoming a dominant WR. MVS just needs to clean up his Catch %, and everything else will be fine. Nelson had better than a 66% Catch% over his 10 year career, while Davante is currently at 62%. MVS is currently at 49.6%. THAT has to improve. If he can bounce that over 60%, we'll be in business.

I agree that the offense "should" be better in 2020 with one possible exception, RT. I am over the not drafting a top WR angst. The board fell against them and unless they could have traded over SF, Brandon Aiyuk and JJ were destined to be off the board. Could have traded up for Denzel Sims in R2 but didn't. Anyway, Funchess & Begelton & StBrown should give the Pack the depth they need. Like Lazard & Adams, they will help the run game as well. I think Rodgers will be more effective in the 2020 version of the offense as well. TEs should be a huge upgrade: Sternberger and DaGuara are just the young guys we need for an offensive renaisance at TE. Then we get to the RBs. How can Dillon not help us? All 3 RBs have good hands and will be weapons in the passing game as well as the run game. We now have a ton of offensive versatility. I predict a great year for 12. As always, injuries will go a long way to determining our record but I'd say we have a good shot at 9 or 10 wins. My biggest worry remains RT on offense and stopping the run on defense.

Dillion will replace either Jones or Williams next year as 1 wont be signed. If Jones wants 15 million he hopefully is gone.

They won't pay any RB $15 million in this day and age. One of them will almost certainly not be back in 2021. But for this season, barring a trade or injury, we could have all three in the lineup and that creates some interesting possibilities. Thanks for commenting, Duneslick.

Thanks for the comment, Archie. I agree re: RT. Wagner was a top echelon free agent when he signed with Detroit but never quite lived up to it there. Injuries were part of the reason. If he can be consistent and solid the offense should be OK. Fingers crossed on that one.

I was somewhat surprised and disappointed that the Packers didn’t draft a WR however:

*Lazard is an ascending player who does everything it takes to be a pro and deserves a shot at #2

*Funchess is a proven veteran, still young at 26, big, physical and made some really great catches of Cams inaccurate tosses.

*EQ was also developing when he injured his ankle and had some big catches in 2018.

*Begelton was a great player in Canada and had much promise!
