Rodgers Marshals Another Lazarus-like Victory – Bye Week Awaits

The Packers were the victims of poor officiating in their Week 2 game against Minnesota when Clay Matthews was whistled for a phantom roughing the passer call on Kirk Cousins that ultimately allowed the Vikings to tie the game in regulation. Green Bay caught a break when Minnesota kicker Daniel Carlson forgot everything he ever learned about booting a ball through the uprights and was summarily pink slipped after the 29-29 overtime tie.

However, karma has a way of coming around and the bad juju the Packers experienced early in the season became a distant memory after a controversial illegal contact call on the 49ers’ Richard Sherman gave the Packers life with under a minute remaining in the game. It was all the time Aaron Rodgers needed as the greatest quarterback in Packers’ history, with all due respect to Bart Starr, Brett Favre, and of course, the immortal Majik Man himself Don Majkowski, rallied the troops and marched the team well within Mason Crosby’s striking distance. With time expiring Crosby kicked Green Bay to a 33-30 victory over a surprisingly game San Francisco squad.

Green Bay now finds themselves in a dogfight for the NFC North lead with the Bears and Vikings. But fortunately, the Packers will get two weeks to heal and prepare for the team many consider to be the best in the NFL this season, the Los Angeles Rams. Nevertheless, there are more than a few issues that need to be solved if the Packers are to be more than paper tigers in the NFC. First and foremost, Rodgers must get healthy. The moment he takes the field, sans knee brace, is the moment his mobility will no longer be hindered. According to reports, that could very well happen after the bye week when they travel to LA to take on the Rams.

Secondly, the mental mistakes are taking their toll on head coach Mike McCarthy. After the win over San Francisco, McCarthy had this to say:

"You're not supposed to say you're frustrated, but I'm frustrated with the penalties," he said. "I don't like the pattern we've established in the first six weeks. Way too many penalties and most of that is on special teams."

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, is an overdose of passing. Yes, if there’s one quarterback you want throwing early and often it is indeed Aaron Rodgers. However, consider for a moment that Rodgers has had at least 40 pass attempts over his last five games. To put this in perspective, former New England Patriot Drew Bledsoe holds the single-season record of seven consecutive games with greater than 40 pass attempts, a record that has held fast for over 20 years. Prior to this season, Rodgers high water mark in this category was three consecutive games. This will become a problem once the better teams begin to key exclusively on the pass as this running back by committee approach does not bode well for Green Bay’s long-term success. What McCarthy should do is make Aaron Jones the workhorse as he is averaging 5.9 yards per carry and is outperforming both Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery.

While I agree the pass/run balance should feature the run a bit more, I'm not sure all those carries should go to Jones.

It is obvious to everyone and their sister that Jones is the one getting the most yards per carry, so you have to ask the question WHY does MM not play him more. It just isn't enough to call him stubborn (the most often-quoted reason), coaches are always looking for the best matchups in a game.

Jamaal Williams is more assignment-sure in pass protection and might be able to handle a heavier workload, while Ty Montgomery has the best hands (being an ex-WR), so it makes sense to use them all.

While I'd like to see more runs, it isn't clear to me that MM is more to blame than AR. I just don't know how many times the play call is changed in the huddle.

PS I can't see the authors name (Ed Wood) without thinking of the infamously awful film (Plan 9 From Outer Space) by the director with the same name.

1. I also wonder if Jones’s durability is in doubt merely because of his size.
2. I suspect Ed Wood is a pen name.

Richard Sherman did not dispute the call , he said he can't make mistakes like that at critical times in a game , he is a stand up guy.

I suggest, with signings approaching the October 30th deadline, we try to sign two or three, one year contracts, to rotational edge rushers. This may help our pathetic rush pressure, and may help us stay true to our gap responsibility on runs. Doing this will help our d-backs out greatly. Especially on deep route burns!

Rodgers can not beat teams by the pass only as we become very ONE DIMENSIONAL. We need balance with the run game to keep defenses guessing. But, as based on the past since 2010, MM refuses to use our backs correctly or at all. Genius MM? Not! Every fan and broadcasters see this, but MM doesn't. GET RID OF MM. You'll definitely see this after the Ram and Patriot games. MM will not have them ready, wont change gameplan because we'll fall behind by 17 points, and he will revert and then depend on Rodgers arm to bail us out; which will make us one dimensional and defense will pin their ears back! Truth is spoken here.

Nice final paragraph segue into an infomercial for sports betting! Almost a Wayne Larivee-like "the Packers have crossed the 50 yard line, and men, if you're over 50 you'll want to talk with your doctor about...." effort.

Ed Wood has to be a ringer.

Sure, Al, the new sponsored quiz tells me that. Weaving that bullshit into an opinion piece is low. And speaking of low, do you need help in lowering your bills? Call 1-800-555-1212

Fascinating tidbit of information you provided regarding the passing attempts.

Although from a fantasy football perspective, I'd love it if Aaron Jones was the lead back and getting 75% of the carries but he has not displayed consistency in the pass game which is a problem. What evidence is there that supports Aaron Jones should be the "work horse" RB? Again, if he's not consistent in the pass game, he's not a 3-down back, thus not my "work horse" RB. I'm not looking for a 50/50 run/pass ratio...

THE PACKERS PROPHET's picture

October 19, 2018 at 05:55 pm

Ed, I have a long time timeline of reading your work and enjoying your perspective as a fellow Cheezehead. I respect your football acumen and your overall Packer knowledge. However after reading this, I think you need to reconsider something. You flat out named Aaron Rodgers as the best Packer qb in history. Hold up. Pump the breaks bubba. We are living in the Rodgers era of now so it is easy to drink that kool aid. Make no mistake about it I am the biggest 12 fan there is. Even though I’ve watched every meaningful snap of his entire pro career, I remain in awe of the things Aaron Rodgers does on the football field game in and game out. BUT! That being said, you need to rethink that statement. Obviously nobody has played the quarterback position at a higher level than Aaron Rodgers. I think anyone who’s subjected him to the eye test would agree. But that statement means more than just play on the field. This franchise is so unique, so storied, and so downright incredible that your average franchise analysis just doesn’t always apply the same to us as it does the other 31 teams. What Brett Favre meant to this team, this franchise, and this fan base, can NOT be undervalued. As time wears on we are oh so soon to forget but number four saved this franchise. If it wasn’t for his career and the critical timing of which it began, it is not far fetched in the slightest to say there would no longer be a team in Green Bay. And the amazing feats of arm strength we regularly witness from Aaron Rodgers is something that also happened routinely with Brett Favre. Make no mistake Brett Favre wielded a throwing arm that was an all timer. We have grown numb to this because first arm in history that is comparable was literally his immediate predecessor. My how lucky we have been. I, like anyone else, am soaking in this Rodgers years and enjoying every moment. But I will NEVER forget what Brett Favre did for me or this Franchise. #GOAT
